[ ! "$var" ] is not a valid test at all right?
@Jesse_b yes, it is a valid test
it’s equivalent to [ ! -n "$var" ]
(see man [)

@StephenKitt Thanks. Duh I was testing it wrong :(
I did this:
$ var=notnull
$ [ ! "$notnull" ] && echo yes
yes
@Jesse_b excellent
I still haven't finished my coffee :p
I will haze myself for this mistake
seems normal enough. besides, you got it in about half an hour, it could have been worse.
@Jesse_b set -u is your friend

@StephenKitt ty sir! That is nice and I had not known about it
I'm currently just going through this 2000+ line file full of functions that is used by my company though and trying to interpret it / write up usage information on it
I really want to rewrite some of this stuff but I don't even fully understand it and it seems like a project that I would like to avoid lol
I was asking about that test because I wanted to change them all to [[ -z "$var" ]]

I have my bash prompt printing a new line before the prompt to give me space between the last command. the issue is that the new line is also there on login. any ideas for how I could eliminate that new line?
```
$
```
vs.
```
$
```

so I found a decent solution. now I'm wondering the best way to add a new line to an existing PS1. Something like PS1='\n$PS1' (which isn't working)
20:35
PS1=YOUR PROMPT HERE (without newline)

reset_prompt () {
  PS1="\n$PS1"
}
PROMPT_COMMAND='(( PROMPT_CTR-- < 0 )) && {
  unset PROMPT_COMMAND PROMPT_CTR
  reset_prompt
}'
^ solved

Q: Ubuntu 18.04 tracking a PC is still a "free software"?

user9303970I read this article. I admit I don't understand if the author is sarcastic when emphasizing the fact that Ubuntu will make the results of the data public, for everyone to see in a large <h3> HTML tag, but anyway, I still want to ask, isn't such implementation take out the Free Software element o...
