greetings, i am uncertain if my question would belong to unix.se or rather security.se.
Question would be basically:
protect open wifi access point OS from malicious user
the major point on what else other than iptables to implement to get a reasonable high level of "protection".
10:31
@DennisNolte Well, IP tables configuration is on topic here. Assuming you're using some sort of *nix, of course. Setting up your router to block access would belong on Super User instead.
@terdon thank you for your reply. i am gonna prepare the question and ask it, worst will be another close :)
10:45
@DennisNolte Heh, go for it. :)
That question is already on security.se - security.stackexchange.com/q/40304/13705
so I'm going to say that it's on-topic there :-)
This thread bubbled up on Meta, so I added my bit to it: unix.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2668/…
@terdon, you've changed your profile picture? Is that you?
@Kusalananda nice to know more about you :-)
11:04
@Kusalananda No. Last time I changed it was years ago now, I think. Why?
And yes, it's me.
Oh, by the way, @Kusalananda, did you ever work with Benoit Ballester at Ensembl?
@terdon Oh, then I was mistaken. Sorry.
@terdon :thumbsup:
@terdon I did indeed! Nice chap!
@Kusalananda Or it might be a bug. If you see a blurry guitar, then it's the same.
@Kusalananda Ha! Yes he is. I was doing my post doc in the place he landed when he left.
Yay! We're real people after all!
Hi chat,after long time
@terdon I think Benoit is back in France now.
11:12
@Kusalananda Yes, in Marseille: tagc.univ-mrs.fr/tagc/index.php/people
That's where I was doing my post doc.
11:58
@terdon I think I'll ping off an email to him, just to say I'm still alive. Thanks for reminding me about him! :-)
Heh, give him my best (he knows me as Charles, the Greek guy :)

@terdon as written by jenny and through further checking the topical parts i asked the security meta and will go from their, thanks for your support so far.
@DennisNolte Well, I hope you get your answer, wherever you ask.

@terdon about code that you write at work, what is the license of it? Can you claim a specific license? Or the company owns it? (I ask because I'm probably going to work in some health related institution, and through the talks, nobody has touched the topic)
@Braiam I can't answer for @terdon, but all code I write professionally is required to be licensed under an open source license. All the code I write is Public Record (I'm funded by government) and as such it's required to be open source.
@Braiam In my case, it's 100% closed source, copyrighted, blah blah, horrid.
In academia, however, it is most often GNU/MIT or other open source licenses.
@Braiam mine is all open source too
Is supposedly an public institution with academic focus... through in my country, people tend to not think about it
@terdon :sadface:
16:20
Yeah.
@Braiam In that case, GNU is quite likely. But depending on who you're working with (computer people or biologists) they might simply have no idea at all.
@Braiam They should be able to answer if you ask about it. Ask whether there is any requirement on licensing from the funding agencies. If not, pick one that you like. choosealicense.com
... if it's up to you at all.
As to who owns the code, that's a different thing. Usually it's the employer.
I don't, for example, say that I own what I produce. It's a team effort.
"Third level" health, whatever that is, decentralized government institution
May I ask what country?
(no need to answer)
Mine :P
16:27
Dominican Republic, the one with the city which according to Jimmy Hoffa driving experience is "like driving in an arcade game. That was pure insanity, one of the most exhilirating, scary, hilarious things I'd ever done in a car. "

hey anybody on?
quick question on ssh
21:42
@BobEbert Ask. If anyone can answer (now or when they're on, they will).
I'd like to know if it's possible to do a reverse ssh tunnel with the client and the server behind NAT
the server puts the public ip of my router, and I, behind my nat connects to it
connect*
it should be, yes, but I don't know enough about it to help you. I suggest you ask on the main site instead.
22:01
thanks, I'll ask on the site
