@terdon - there's no reason to at least even mention the methods you recommend might damage property if used? I mean not even a just so you know, click here?
And it's not like where I did was even out of context, I added a few words to an pre-existing disclaimer on the matter - with a link. It was relevant.

A: Data on efficacy of triage

Shog9I've been tracking this for a while; the stats I look at aren't particularly fancy, so I converted them into charts to make them slightly more visually appealing. Let's start with a big, mostly uninformative chart of how Triage reviews have been completed over the life of the queue: Percen...

@Anthon Which one is that? I didn't really follow the following discussion.

Q: How can I extract/change lines in a text file whose data are separated into fields?

terdonHow can I manipulate field-based data from the commandline? For example How can I print only lines whose Nth field is foo? How can I print only lines whose Nth field isn't foo? How can I print only lines whose Nth field matches foo? How can I change field N to foo? Is there a standard approac...

@terdon it might make sense the mark this question canonical in some fashion. do we have a canonical tag, or did gilles disapprove of it? :-)

@FaheemMitha it doesn't work meta.superuser.com/q/9231/235569

6:10 AM
@Braiam Actually it is not clear from that, that doing this is a bad idea.

Hey Folks, I've been stuck with this for some time serverfault.com/questions/698984/…

@WillemD'haeseleer I just voted to move it here, so now it's at unix.stackexchange.com/questions/210510/…

@FaheemMitha I'd really rather not. It's there, and can be used as such but I don't want to fight Mike any more than necessary and he's already taken umbrage at it for some reason.

11:55 AM
@terdon I think the canonical tag or similar is useful for treating these questions as a group. And I don't pay too much attention to what people say if I think I'm right, personally. But ymmv.
Also, you're a mod. People are supposed to cower before the power of the mod.
@terdon You should tell Mike - don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.
Still lots of rain here. Makes the ambient temperature go down. Otherwise it is a bit of a pain. But then, I've never been one of those Singing in the Rain types.

@FaheemMitha :)
I try to avoid imposing my will unless necessary. Last time I tried to make one of my own Q&As a canonical one there was all sorts of drama on meta and I really don't want to get into a fight about it.

Hmm, I guess I could add an R or Pandas answer. But that question has no use case. Should I just say - use Pandas and be happy?
@terdon Drama on Meta? Do tell.

Q: Canonical question about shell operators

terdonA few of us were discussing the fact that information on the various shell operators is spread across multiple Q&As. For example: Is there a difference between `;` and `&&` and `|`? redirection and pipeline Confusing use of && and || operators Difference between > and | with /dev/tty How can on...

Part of me wants to go to Germany for Debconf, but it's expensive and I'm busy. I wish I was indescribably wealthy and could just pilot my private jet over to Heidelberg. Sigh.
@terdon it looks like people were Ok with your actions, so I don't see a problem. But if you are going to make one of your question/answers canonical, it might be a good idea to make it community wiki.

@FaheemMitha I don't want to make it canonical or CW. I tried that and it turns into huge sprawling answers that very few people will actually read through. I just wanted a simple primer on the basic field manipulation tools.
Yes, we can then close some questions as dupes but I don't want to make it all inclusive.

12:10 PM
@terdon whatever you think best.
@terdon I'm puzzled that Mike thinks that anyone cares about IIP.

Q: Does the new Fedora package manager allow unauthorized installations?

Woodrow BarlowI just upgraded to Fedora 22. The biggest change from the previous version is that the yum package manager is now replaced with dnf. One change I've noticed is that if you try to execute a command that comes from a common package which is not yet installed, the terminal will prompt you to install...

@FaheemMitha That is in Germany, you could go on your bicycle (like I might do if I go), certainly if you start out now.

3:15 PM
@Anthon You mean cycle to Germany? Like Dervla Murphy? That would (a) be much more expensive than taking a plane (b) much more time consuming (c) considerably more dangerous and (d) I don't know how to ride a bike. But thanks for the suggestion.
If you don't get the Murphy reference, she is a crazy but cool Irish lady who likes hair raising adventure in foreign climes. E.g.
Still alive, apparently.
She sounds kind of insane, but in a fun way.
There are also some Cambridge people who did something similar for charity, but I don't remember any details.
Hi @cuonglm

Hi @FaheemMitha

@cuonglm What's happening?

You mean?

3:33 PM
@cuonglm Hmm?

@FaheemMitha: I don't know what did you ask me about?

@cuonglm "What's happening" is a general term. Meaning, what is going on with you? (if anything).

@FaheemMitha: Ah, sorry for my bad English.
Anyway, I'm looking for a new job :)

@cuonglm No problem.
@cuonglm In Vietnam? Don't like your current one?

Yeah, your policy is bad. I'm looking for job anywhere
@FaheemMitha: Sorry, I mean their policy is bad :|

3:42 PM
@cuonglm Ah, ok.

Has anyone here ever mentioned Dwarf Fortress to me? @terdon @Gilles @derobert ?

@FaheemMitha do you mean chat.stackexchange.com/… ?

@Pandya No, that doesn't look like the one.

@FaheemMitha I don't think it was me, I haven't played it.

@derobert Ok.

@FaheemMitha I doubt I've mentioned it to you, but I have played it years ago
