21:00
and this isn't a statement about Kumar Appiah, it is a statement about IITB, been there a few times and each time just feel like exploring IITB only.
@shirish yes. Actually I just looked at his email, and he said he would be unable to make it, but as somehow read it as he would there. I must have been a bit out of it that day.
I did meet Rigved, who seemed like a nice guy.
It doesn't hurt to meet some Indian Debian people, I guess. Before that I had only met Praveen, who wasn't there either.
isn't there a theory about it somewhere, that we read things the way we want to, rather than the way it's written.
@shirish :-) I'm usually fairly good at seeing what is there. I think I must not have been paying attention.
Praveen is down south and probably will remain there till there is a reason for him to come upstream, I mean north.
@shirish yes, Rigved said he doesn't know what he is doing there.
Do you?
21:02
probably making more Praveen look-alikes.
And you said something about cake, but there was no cake.
How can it be a party without cake?
he is at heart an activist, so probably would be trying to turn more people into linux-users.
I was expecting it to be.
we did make one when we did a release party in Pune about 2 years back, with the swirl and everything.
@shirish that's kind of a specialist thing. and almost nobody actually asks questions about it, they usually don't know it exists. tags go with the questions, I think.
Not the answers.
@shirish well, presumably he still needs to eat. he can't eat free software.
hmm... that's why I created the question in the first place
he's into trainings as well.
@shirish what question?
Never mind, I see it.
21:04
the last I heard he was doing some sort of corporate trainings and making some servers work, didn't ask for details and he didn't offer any.
The only question tagged apt-file. :-)
@shirish I see. He seemed like a nice guy, though we only met once.

A: How do I find all and any files which are in Debian archive (either in source or in binary).

Mohsen PahlevanzadehAt first you have to have deb-src in your sources.list and the apt-get upgrade Then : apt-file update apt-file search YOUR_PATTERN |grep -E '*.c|*.cc'

He was supposed to come for lunch. Didn't make it because he was busy helping that cartoonist who got arrested. Forget his name.
right, he made those political cartoons, also did a few for the recent net neutrality bit as well.
I see Mohsen is trying to be helpful.
21:06
yup, he is.
@shirish who did?
The name totally escapes me.
Aseem Trivedi, the guy who got 66A slapped on him.
@shirish apt-file only searches binary packages.
are you sure it doesn't go through source packages, that would be weird, wouldn't it.
There isn't an equivalent for sources, afaik. There is the new debian code search thingy. Not sure if that translates to a local service. You should probably ask on the relevant ml or irc channel. Asking here will just get you Mohsen. :-)
@shirish pretty sure.
In Debian, source packages are second-class citizens. Maybe @derobert or @Gilles can weigh in here.
<cue complaint about being name-dropped in the middle of a conversation.>
21:09
I know about debian code search thingy that you are talking about. It's a shame we don't seem to have a local instance for the service, it would make it much easier to figure out things at times.
@shirish well, you could ask about it. they'll probably try to get you to work on it.
who or what is <cue
That's how Debian works. It's all emotional blackmail and flattery. That's how they suck you in.
lol, do know that.
@shirish um, I was facetiously referring to the fact that Anthony and/or Gilles will probably object to having to read the conversation prior to weighing in. :-)
21:11
ah ok, agreed :)
That meeting only lasted an hour, and I hardly got a chance to talk to the few people who were there, but nobody else offered to sign my key. If you talk to Kartik, remind him about my key.
So, what happened to Aseem Trivedi?
The WP article looks out of date.
There's certainly plenty of material in India for a cartoonist. That beef ban insanity, for example.
exactly, that is true.
btw codesearch.debian.net is useless.
@shirish well, you probably need to get to sleep. I hope you are feeling better.
@shirish why?
I tried "* filetype:c" and it erred out saying the query is too short or it's malformed.
@shirish huh. no idea. I'll try it later, if I remember.
21:19
sure.
Have you tried sources.debian.net?
oh, i see, that just points to codesearch
Oh dear, I was naughty and did a search for time.h.
1414040 files grepped (239466 results)
Yikes.
hmm, false positives.
you did "time.h" right ?
Dunno.
Does that make a difference?
yup, made a lot of difference at my end.
@shirish oh
21:25
doing a search on "time.h" gave me only 769 results.
@shirish yes, I see. And it doesn't like wild cards.
that's the point I was trying to understand, why. let me check if somebody has filed any bugs for codesearch.debian.net
nah, bts gives up saying there is no maintainer, so it's the guy only who is the source of contact for now.
@shirish maybe they just don't support it. I'd ask on IRC.
@shirish huh? maintainer of what?
lot of "virtual packages" are also maintained on the Debian BTS
which are not actual packages but actually services which are needed in order for debian.org to run
so each of these "packages" are also listed in the Debian BTS so people can file bugs against them and the bugs are in public-domain.
@shirish right. but usually services don't have maintainers listed.
because they are not really packages. Maybe a mailing address.
21:32
correct, what I meant is that the field is populated with some credentials or the other.
@shirish ok
typing "other" in reportbug gives you a list of the various virtual packages/services that you can file bugs about.
If you ask on #debian or #debian-mentors, you will probably find someone who knows about it.
I usually find that a faster method than email. And much faster than filing bug reports. Which people just tend to ignore.
@shirish are you planning to go to the next event at Andheri?
@derobert Ulp, I forgot to mention that this machine is running wheezy
hopefully the solution will still work when I get around to upgrading to jessie
I hear rumors that jessie is going to be LTS. But the LTS effort seems to be scrambling for funding.
At least from what Raphael Hertzog says.
21:40
@FaheemMitha dunno, I might if health holds up and I get around an hour to talk about Debian and $STUFF.
do agree about the LTS funding bit.
@shirish are you feeling better then?
feeling lot better than sunday for sure.
@shirish ok. well, try to get some rest.
unfortunately am bit of an insomniac, so lseep is always an issue.
just wrapping a few things, and then try to get some much-needed rest.
@shirish ok
21:43
@FaheemMitha and it seems regexp. does work, but wildcards seem off the documentation points at github.com/google/re2/blob/master/doc/syntax.txt
at which point I'm lost as I know only a little of regexp. construction.
How much is the beef ban a topic of conversation among your friends and acquaintances?
Just curious.
I am, unfortunately a veggie and so are most of my friends.
@shirish wild cards are globbing. that's different from regexps.
I don't know much about that stuff, but I do know that.
@shirish Oh, so not a topic of conversation then? And why unfortunately?
globbing and regexps are sort of orthogonal.
@FaheemMitha I know, that was the point I was trying to make, that they share documentation about regular expression but not wild cards.
@shirish well, they probably don't support it. hence, no documentation.
21:46
right, probably, still have given a shout, let's see if there are any reactions to it.
@shirish a shout where?
to the person via email, and I usually get responses from the people concerned.
I usually hang on #debian-gnome and #debian-systemd
@shirish ok
but nowadays nothing much happening on either, we are all waiting for gnome 3.16 to come.
and before you say, I know it's released, it's packaging and ftp-masters where its stuck.
@derobert @casey one more phone-related question. Is it common for your providers to offer data valid for an unlimited time?
@shirish what do you think are good mobile service provides in Maharashtra?
I'm currently using Airtel.
Also, who has good deals for voice, data, etc.?
21:50
I haven't explored data much, but will need in near future so would be exploring that as well.
I think MTNL has pretty good deals, but their customer service is beyond awful.
on voice I find IDEA to be good, there is a rate-cutter as well but all depends on how much usage you have for it I guess.
@shirish MTNL now has very good net plans. But I don't know if that is available in Pune.
@shirish Airtel has a rate cutter too, for mobile to mobile. 30 paise per min.
I also find IDEA has pretty good coverage at least within Maharashtra.
I'm currently using 50 paise per min rate cutter. Didn't know there was a 30 paise option.
21:51
then it's same/similar to IDEA then.
@shirish Ok. One of the people who works for us uses IDEA.
@FaheemMitha you mean in your office or house-hold ?
I'm thinking of getting two sims for my new phone. Maybe I'll try Idea.
@shirish at home.
the "works for us"
right, ok.
@shirish yes, technically he works for my mother.
I don't have an office.
How about Vodaphone?
21:54
I haven't tried it so no "idea" :)
btw got a reply, apparently ithe repo. is listed at github.com/Debian/dcs
@shirish that's fast.
lol, it's been that way for quite sometime with me, have no idea as to why.
go? huh.
@shirish is IDEA your current mobile carrier?
correct.
ok
@shirish you don't seem to be here regularly. is this just an occasional stop for you?
22:12
yup, but that's because 'chat' takes a long time for me. I have to be free to be in chat and don't really get much time for that.
and for some reason find IRC much much better than what stack offers for the room, except the fact that here chats are logged (which is good)
@shirish oh, ok.
@shirish I use both, but other things being equal prefer SE chat.
if I wanted to find conversations about a topic though, dunno how far I'll able to search .
@shirish ?

Q: What memory is not used by processes and freed by `echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches`?

HalfgaarWithout programs open, my computer uses about 512M of memory. Yesterday, I had nothing open, yet 2 GB of mem use (used - cache = 2153): total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3261 2875 386 30 199 523 -/+ buffers/...

A: How much RAM does the kernel use?

slmKernel is a bit of a misnomer. The Linux kernel is comprised of several proceses/threads + the modules (lsmod) so to get a complete picture you'd need to look at the whole ball and not just a single component. Incidentally mine shows slabtop: Active / Total Size (% used) : 173428.30K / 2...

SE chat can also be used asynchronously.
22:14
is the first a duplicate of the second (which is a bit more general)?
for e.g. I want to find all conversations about say 'systemd' but with time and date and in another tab, this I do not know if it can be done, or if done, how to go about doing that.
@Gilles probably not. It's a rather more specific question.
@shirish conversations where?
here, in the room.
basically all conversations which invoked 'systemd'
that would be useful for all.
@shirish oh. yes, there is a search feature. I don't really use it, but others seem to have had success with it.
@shirish You can search for messages containing systemd. Chat won't break up the messages into conversations for you.
22:17
I guess you could search for "systemd". Or whatever.
@Giles
@Giles thank you for modifying the question (makes it better)
22:39
debtags seems to be closest to the answer but even that has some issues while trying debtags search "implemented in::c"
I am not able to get a listing of source packages which used C.
Oh, Stephen Kitt is a DD. Not a lot of them around here.
@shirish I don't see an easy way to do that.
ohk... that's news to me.
@shirish what is?
that there is a DD and his name is Stephen Kitt and he's here.
@shirish oh. Yes, I've noticed him around recently. His rep is rising quite fast. As for him being a DD, it's on his profile. But either I didn't notice it earlier, or he just added it.
DDs don't seem to like SE. At least, he's the first one I've noticed here. Of course, they could be here under a nom-de-plume.
22:50
true.
this seems to be the only way "http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/199228/how-do-i-find-all-and-any-files-‌which-are-in-debian-archive-either-in-source-or/199247#comment334715_199228"
23:12
@shirish if you put it in quotes, it stops being a link.
my bad then unix.stackexchange.com/questions/199228/…‌‌which-are-in-debian-archive-either-in-source-or/199247#comment334715_199228
@StephenKitt thank you. I found a solution but it's long-winded. Find all the packages which have been implemented in c using debtags search "implemented-in::c" send the output to another file or stdout. Take any of those packages, download them via apt-get source $PACKAGENAME and then extract from the original.tar.gz and then you know which files are in .c . Admittedly this is not scalable unless content indices for source packages are born sometime in this century. — shirish 19 mins ago
actually the tar.gz is already extracted nowadays, somehow the old functioning is still stuck in the head.
23:26
zoning out for now, see you all later :)
