A: Closing questions just makes people feel really bad - can we make it harder in general?

Jeff AtwoodI think a focus on "feelings" is the wrong idea. Do people get their feelings hurt when they are turned down at a job interview? When they don't get the promotion they wanted? When they are unable to attend a college or school they applied to, but were not accepted into? Sometimes, having stand...

@Braiam Nice link. I feel better now about hitting that close link/button. Think I am gonna hit the review queues for a change ;-)

@FaheemMitha - Back in for a few hours. Tried download as requested and got:-

@MichaelJohn I'll be here for a while. Let me know if you want to talk now.
Did you see my reply to you?
Hi... I am OK for the next couple of hours... Was that the one requesting the download?
15:06
@MichaelJohn No. One sec.
Don't run apt-get download as root. Only run installation commands as root. Post your /etc/apt/sources.list in the question. Make sure to run apt-get update before running any apt-get command. — Faheem Mitha 2 hours ago
@MichaelJohn post your sources.list in the question.
15:20
Sorry which file is that? sourceslist.py is very long and more of a program...
@MichaelJohn huh? No, look at /etc/apt/sources.list. This is the standard location for apt sources.
You could also run:
apt-cache policy python-2.7 python2.7-libpython2.7-minimal and post the results of that.
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ maya upstream import main
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise main restricted universe multiverse

Ok. Did you run apt-get update?
Also, add the output of sources.list to your question.

Ok, weird. Did you run apt-get update?
Sorry apt-cache policy python2.7 python2.7 libpython2.7-minimal
That earlier version is garbled.

@MichaelJohn This is what I get. ^^
Oh, precise is quite old. Maybe it just doesn't have it.
@MichaelJohn Ok, go ahead and download the other two.
@MichaelJohn Ok, I think you have libpython2.7. Give apt-cache policy libpython2.7 too.
Also python2.7-dev
apt-cache policy libpython2.7

@MichaelJohn yes, apt-get download libpython2.7 python2.7 python2.7-minimal
I think the dev package is probably not necessary right now. Though you can add it if you want.
Done...
@MichaelJohn Ok, then you need to install them
did you do the download in a empty directory? that is usually best.
16:02
no other bits around - shall I create empty one and mv them?
dpkg -i package if I remember right...
@MichaelJohn yes
@MichaelJohn yes, probably a good idea to put all these in a separate directory. Also, list the deb files you downloaded, please.

@MichaelJohn Ok, you can do dpkg -i libpython2.7_2.7.3-0ubuntu3.6_amd64.deb ...
that's what the ... was supposed to mean.
So I repeat tnhe libpython...
@MichaelJohn Just do all three together in one line.
Reinstalling libpython won't hurt anything.
Running.......

@MichaelJohn run debsums -as. You must have missing files. In /usr/lib/python2.7 if nowhere else.
Sorry have to definitely go in two minutes... Looking good though...
@MichaelJohn Ok. if this fixes the problem for you, please upvote and accept
@FaheemMitha I run Debian. Though I do have an Ubuntu box or two I manage.

Well, you might know. Anyway, it is sorted, I guess.
@MichaelJohn yes, you need to install command-not-found
Looks like it - many thanks for all your help... And have a good evening...
Though that may or may not work...
@MichaelJohn Ok. Take care.
17:11
@derobert so, what's happening?
Not much. At work.

@FaheemMitha no idea, it should be there... apt-cache search libpython2 should show all available packages (I doubt Ubuntu has older/newers)

@Braiam libpython2.7-minimal is newer. in "precise", like wheezy, it is libpython2.7.

A: Why does `systemctl enable rpcbind' change the volume of my sound? And how do I prevent this?

intelfxThis is a bug (the actual root cause is somewhat deeper: systemd's reload logic is flawed). I'm working on fixing it; in the meantime, if this manifestation (spontaneous volume change) bothers you, you can work around it by using alsa-state.service instead of alsa-{,re}store.service (refer to man...

> This is a bug (the actual root cause is somewhat deeper: systemd's reload logic is flawed). I'm working on fixing it
Oooh, we have a systemd developer here!
Oooh, there is a systemd developer who fixes bugs!
Oooh, there is a systemd developer who doesn't systematically insult people!
23:36
@muru How?
@Gilles exciting.
@Gilles presumably other systemd devs also fix bugs.
@Gilles he is 18, probably treats systemd developing as a way to learn things rather then share his already gained experience. No doubt there are bugs.
Hi @jimmij
@FaheemMitha hi
@jimmij Not a lot of activity around here.
I see Gilles popped in.
I see this answer uses Bombay as a metaphor for excessive home density. Nice.

A: How long will it take human population to exceed one trillion?

Serban TanasaNot as long as you might think It depends on the assumptions you're willing to make. With the world population growing at a vigorous 2% per year, there would be a trillion people alive in around the year 2260. The fastest human population has ever grown in recent history was 2.2% per year in ...

@FaheemMitha yes, this site is dying. No good question, no good answers, we all gonna die soon.
23:43
30,000 people/sq.km, yay.
@jimmij what site?
Wikipedia only gives 21khab/km², which is less impressive (that's the figure for Paris)
they might be using different city limits
@Gilles for Bombay? Bombay is definitely more crowded than Paris. What is khab?
though Mumbai doesn't have very tall building, does it? That would be a really high density per habitable m²
@FaheemMitha thousands of inhabitants
21,000/km^2, yes.
Kowloon is 43k/km²
23:47
@Gilles Not in general, though that is changing. Lots of reconstruction going on, I think.
it's impressively vertical
But changing slowly, I think. I don't really know.
It's a cesspool, either way.
Oh, HK. I imagine Tokyo must also be pretty bad.
Hong Kong isn't that dense on average (“only” 6k)
6,000/km^2. Apparently not.
HK is surprisingly (to me) sparse: it's islands of skyscrapers in a sea lake of nature. But the areas that are built up are really built UP.
23:49
@Gilles Hmm
@Gilles hard to imagine HK is concerned about ecology. Nobody around here gives a crap about ecology. I doubt the people who run the city can even spell the word. And it shows.
@FaheemMitha HK ≠ China
HK has worked a lot on their urban planning. It grew very fast in the 20th century.
@Gilles ok.
@Gilles Good to know. Still wouldn't want to live there. Better than India, though.
