@slm Stephane has a very impressive range and depth of knowledge

That's why we call him POSIX man. Sysadmin by day, cape wearing and fearless standards defender by night!

@terdon Now you made me start to imagin a crossover between SomethingPositive and StackExchange.

@Braiam Thanks.
This looks extremely closable. What do you guys think?

Q: Testing a Linux router on Laptop with one NIC

WaqarSo, I have these instructions on converting my Linux machine to a router using (enable IP forwarding, NAT). Now my laptop has only one NIC and I want to test this setup. Any ideas how I can do this? (Please give details if required, I am not very good on linux) Note: If there is a tool, I need a...

@terdon :-)
How do you know he is a sysadmin? He is not very forthcoming about himself.

@FaheemMitha you do no read the books, how @slm leave and invent posix ?

@Kiwy Don't follow.

@FaheemMitha that's was a joke, a bad one apparentlyt

@FaheemMitha yeah, voted to close

@Kiwy I didn't understand it.

@terdon The other one by that guy is also rather general

Q: Compiling Linux kernel for a router

WaqarI want to make an installable linux kernel that has routing enabled already. So anyone can install it on their machine, do some configuration as required, and machine will work fine for their routing needs. This is what I did so far. Downloading and decompressing a vanilla linux kernel. placing...

@FaheemMitha I do agree those two question needs to be shutdwon

I think this is probably also another unclear what you are asking

also I love the part of stephane website mostly based on OpenSource solutions (XEN based virtualization, LAMP, ad-hoc tools mostly for the software engineering department..., Ubuntu/CentOS/OpenSUSE/WindowXP Operating Systems)

What rep do you need to vote to close?
@terdon Ah, he has a web site.
Wow, actually quite forthcoming. Gilles needs to point us to his site.

@MichaelMrozek Thanks

@FaheemMitha before this you can just flag to raise big users attention

@Kiwy Big user?

more than 3k :)
as 3k is the limit to vote close

@Kiwy Right. As long as you are not calling anyone fat.

3:11 PM
@FaheemMitha certainly not, I would not allow myself to b that rude with person I never ever met

@Kiwy Just kidding.

Hi Everyone, I just rejected 2 edits to comments, here's one, is sytem ok ? does this happen occassionally ? unix.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/40049

@XTian There are no suggested edits to comments, those are posts. But yes, it's fine; anyone can suggest edits, you don't even need an account. We get spam edits from time to time, that's why people review them before they go live

@MichaelMrozek ok tks, just checking

4:17 PM

@Braiam ioctl?

@XTian next time reject them as "Vandalism"

@Braiam there probably is an API
OP is beyond hope anyway

Huh? One of my Super User answers will be "featured on lifehacker"!?

heh, terdon will get more repz in SU...

4:27 PM
@Braiam yeah, and for a ridiculous answer instead of one of my good ones.

> viewed: 889 times
btw, why didn't you used mktemp in the tex_file variable?

@Braiam no idea. Thanks, I did now.
@Braiam how do you see the views?

@strugee No, I don't have access to freedesktop security bugs. I wonder WTF is up that is still marked...

@Braiam ah, I see, so the trick is not being blind then.

4:40 PM
walks away

@Braiam there are a lot of APIs for that.
open, close, read, write, seek, ioctl, fcntl, …
various things in /proc and /sys

@derobert see my last comment ;)

@Braiam OP is beyond hope? Yeah, certainly.
So is the "make my own router" OP.

@derobert yeah, does anyone get what he's trying to do?

I'm pretty sure OP doesn't, and its all down hill from there.

4:48 PM
he commented on my answer... he plans to do a stick router now...

4:58 PM
@Braiam I'm so tempted to give the answer of how you can do routing over one Ethernet interface. All you need is to set up VLAN tagging. You can route between VLANs. Sure, you probably want at least two more machines, and a not-so-cheap managed switch as well... But thankfully I can avoid the temptation, since the question is closed.

Q: How can I install tactile audio keys on my latitude?

pprI have a Dell latitude 6430u which has three tactile keys for mute/audio decrease/audio increase. On debian (sid), either with xfce or gnome, these keys don't work well. The mute key has never work. The two others work sometimes, but not well (I have to press twice, sometimes nothing happens, .....

Good Friday!! Anyone have a minute to answer a question on sed substitute command?

9:00 PM
@Gramps For the most part, questions are better asked on the main site; far more people will see it. Also check that your question hasn't been answered already on the site. Or, for that matter, google.

my lack of knowledge in SED was why i was coming here asking for direction and to see if it has been asked.

@Gramps There are a couple of general category substitution questions that @terdon has been collecting in what amounts to a faq. what is your question about?

Q: Let's compile a list of canonical Q&As

terdonA few of us were talking about this the other day in chat, as we are now quite a bit larger and with several thousand Q&As, there are certain questions that are asked very often. Things like redirecting output, process substitution, batch renaming of files, fixing/reinstalling grub, etc. Let's c...

@Gramps you could just do a keyword search, either on unix.sx or (perhaps better) on google. If it is something simple it has probably already been asked.

9:18 PM
@derobert thanks god is already closed

@Braiam What question?
@Gramps in any case, I'm not in charge of this channel, nor is anyone else, so if you want to ask, ask.

dont want to affend or make anyone made.. just wanted to discuss to get a better understanding of sed

@Gramps Ok, go ahead.

Im not trying to ask for a solution Im asking for a better understanding of how to do something.

There is probably next to nobody here right now, but anyway...

9:24 PM
well Ive used the basic substitute command s/ / /g before but Im lost in trying to figure out how in the pattern match to indicate a specific phrase and ending within a line. Per reading on grymoire on /& Im still a little confused on how to pass s/[foo][bar]/ /g
should I be reading more on regular expressions?
If I knew what to look for I dont mind reading on a bunch of questions but the issue is I dont know what Im looking for

@Gramps I'm not sure what you are asking. Do you have a specific question? It is probably better if you give an example of what you are trying to do.

ok... this actually might help: stackoverflow.com/questions/17988756/…

Q: Installing mpd 1.7 on debian squeeze

trelosaeHow could I install mpd 1.7 or even 1.6 on debian squeeze? It's been suggested to me that I should use backports, but I did not quite understand what I should do in case of unmet dependencies. For instance, mpd 1.7 exists on wheezy-backports but it depends on libraries that are a greater version ...

I'm trying to help this guy. What question do you think this is a dupe of?
Ok, I see it is being voted to close as a dupe of the general backporting question. But it is not a dupe, it is a specific question about backporting a particular piece of software.

10:32 PM
Ok, it has been closed. This is annoying.
I've added a reopen vote.

It really looks like an instance answered by the generic question...
@FaheemMitha I've upvoted it though, so now OP has enough rep to join chat

@derobert Thanks.
@derobert Every question of this nature is different.
I don't agree with a close vote here.
what rep is required for chat?

weird... the package page doesn't have package that are not available in wheezy/-backports packages.debian.org/wheezy-backports/mpd

@FaheemMitha 20

@Braiam Yes, he must have done something wrong. where is the dmo stuff coming from?

10:42 PM
deb-multimedia.org is the only place it comes from
anthony@Zia:~$ apt-cache policy mpd
mpd:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1:0.18.8-dmo2
  Version table:
     1:0.18.8-dmo2 0
        500 deb-multimedia.org testing/main amd64 Packages
        200 deb-multimedia.org unstable/main amd64 Packages
     0.18.8-1 0
        500 http.us.debian.org/debian testing/main amd64 Packages
        200 http.us.debian.org/debian sid/main amd64 Packages
     0.16.7-2+b1 0
        150 http.us.debian.org/debian stable/main amd64 Packages
... there is a dmo version of mpd

@derobert yes, I don't usually use deb-multimedia because it causes problems. plus whats-his-name says he only uses source format 1 because his setup doesn't support 3, which is nutty, and causes problems when you are trying to backport.

@FaheemMitha Yes, sometimes it causes problems. But it also makes so many things work better...
Like, an actual ffmpeg

@derobert What does? source 1?

deb-multimedia.org

@derobert Oh, yes, sometimes the packaging there is useful.

10:47 PM
and yes, checking, libmp3lame0 1:3.99.5-dmo2 is the current version in deb-multimedia

but installing packages from there if you are not careful causes conflicts with the official version.

sure. It's one of those "if it breaks, you get to keep the pieces" things
I'm not sure how many difference there are that I actually use/care about, other than dmo has ffmpeg, debian has libav.

@trelosae Ok, so your problem is sorted?
Unfortunately, you don't get to add an answer unless the question is reopened. If you ask nicely, perhaps the people here will vote to reopen. :-)

fine, if OP is going to provide an answer, I'll vote :-P

yes it is sorted
thanks again

10:57 PM
I will suggest editing that question to make it clear it's about how the general process in the other question doesn't work...

will do

@trelosae Sounds reasonable.
@derobert Do you want that before you vote to reopen?

I already voted to reopen. But it will help you get the other 3 votes, I think.
Plus there is now a bunch of info in the comments that should be incorporated.

so about the dmo packages.. I installed them from the backports because they where a more recent version than what I had. Should I remove them?

@derobert True.
@trelosae I suggest you update your question with more information about the speciific situation.
@Braiam would you vote to reopen?

10:59 PM
@FaheemMitha I'm editing it right now.

@trelosae installed them from the backports? what backports?

@FaheemMitha squeeze backports

The dmo stuff doesn't come from squeeze-backports, it comes from deb-multimedia

oh no, scratch that. it said bpo not dmo

@trelosae Ah, totally different.
that just means backports. debian terminology.

11:05 PM
i see
so when i edit the question should i just add pretty much what was said in the comments? any tips?

the goal of the edited question should be to (a) make it so no one needs to read the comments; (b) make it so someone who has the same need and asks Google finds your question

@trelosae What derobert said.

I have a question: when trying to create a AP by following this tutorial forums.kali.org/… I cannot connect due to "The wrong password has been entered." I am positive that I am using the right password, but it will not let me connect. I'd appreciate it!

@trelosae Try to include all relevant information that you used to resolve the issue.
Can we get more reopen votes on unix.stackexchange.com/q/117554/4671 , please?
@casey ?
Ok, not at 3000 yet.

11:25 PM
ok is the question better now?

@trelosae Your question still mentions dmo.
Also, you have
apt-get build-deps mpd=0.16.7-
i think you are missing something after that.
"when I ran debuild -uc -us it gave me errors about unmet dependecies."
if the error message isn't excessively long, include it.
@slm vote to reopen, please?
@MichaelMrozek ditto
@Gilles ditto
Ok, off back to bed. Take care, guys.
