Seems a little heavy handed to just close it, no?

How many times have we seen an answer here where someone is asking/trying to solve a Q using sed and someone says, no you don't want to use sed to do that, use awk instead b/c of this or that. How is me telling the guy that he shouldn't be using telnet any different?

I've worked at a fortune 500 company for 15+ years, where 6+ were in the .com side of the business, telnet shouldn't be used ever, it's insecure and can be snooped in seconds, even on a supposed secure network. The PCI guidelines even forbade the use of it as part of being compliant. I realize this user wasn't processing CC payments but the best practices offered there should/can be followed outside.

@MichaelMrozek - what about when we tell users not to use which and to use type instead? How is telling the guy to use ssh instead of telnet so different?

@slm Because he might have a perfectly valid reason to use telnet. And if he doesn't, maybe the next guy who googles this question will. You can say "By the way, SSH would be better", but you still need to answer the original question
