Are local variables a bashism?

2:18 PM
@Jesse_b not sure about csh, but here's some reading

2:58 PM
@JeffSchaller Cool, so likely supported but not POSIX
And I don't think anyone is sure about csh

What's the fastest Linux guest for VirtualBox? I'm using CentOS7 guest in Windows 10 host, and it's starting to feel slow. It's got 11GB of RAM, 4 cores, power management is set to high performance, and I manually set the minimum and maximum CPU thresholds to 100%.
I don't know what else I can do to make it any faster.

3:31 PM
@Jesse_b No. Local variables are implemented by most shells.
... possibly with slightly varying syntax (often with local or typeset or variations thereof)

@Kusalananda Thanks

I'm not sure why but it feels really satisfying when Stéphane edits one of my answers. Same with @Kusalananda for that matter

@Ungeheuer What part is slow? "starting to feel slow" is pretty non-specific...
Virtualization normally gives almost no overhead on CPU and memory access and a slight overhead on disk and network I/O. No idea about GPU.

7:43 PM
It's usually the disk that suffers most, with at least two layers of possible fragmentation (the guest FS and in the host FS), if one uses a disk image.
On the VMs I run, network is never a problem.

Yeah, normally you only notice disk. Though sometimes its faster too (if, e.g., you decide to have the host cache guest disk access and ignore flushes, it's much faster! At least as long as the host doesn't crash.)

Good enough for the vms I go out with

I don't have any guests where graphics performance matters. I wouldn't be surprised if it is terrible.
But I doubt anyone on Windows runs a Linux VM to run games.

8:27 PM
I run a linux vm on my windows machine and then use wine within it to play windows games

@Jesse_b VMS?

@Kusalananda virtual machines

OpenVMS is a closed-source, proprietary computer operating system for use in general-purpose computing. It is the successor to the VMS Operating System (VAX-11/VMS, VAX/VMS), that was produced by Digital Equipment Corporation, and first released in 1977 for its series of VAX-11 minicomputers. The 11/780 was introduced at DEC's Oct. 25, 1977 annual shareholder's meeting. In the 1990s, it was used for the successor series of DEC Alpha systems. OpenVMS also runs on the HP Itanium-based families of computers. As of 2019, a port to the x86-64 architecture is underway.The name VMS is derived from virtual...
