9:46 AM
@PrabhjotSingh What is the motherboard?
The CPU only has 2 cores?

10:31 AM
@FaheemMitha I didn't understand your question?
Tell me command about it.

11:10 AM
@FaheemMitha It has one socket with a dual core CPU in it. Through hyperthreading, each CPU runs two threads, giving a total of four visible CPUs.

11:20 AM
@Kusalananda Isn't it i3?

11:36 AM
@PrabhjotSingh I just asked what the name/model of the motherboard is. That's the most basic decision you make when you custom-build a machine.
@Kusalananda I see.

@PrabhjotSingh It is. I answered Faheem's question about number of cores.

@PrabhjotSingh dmidecode -t 2 seems to give the motherboard, at least on my system. You could also try dmidecode -t baseboard.
Ok, the keyword baseboard includes the motherboard and all onboard devices.
So I think dmidecode -t 2 suffices.
Here is the output for mine.
root@orwell:/home/faheem# dmidecode -t 2

This MB is now getting a bit long in the tooth, but it still going strong.
@PrabhjotSingh So, did someone custom build it for you, or did you do it yourself?

My friend built it.

12:17 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Ok. You posted the information twice, though.

@FaheemMitha I was very tired so I said I talk to you tomorrow. My machine is good?

@PrabhjotSingh What do you think? My opinion hardly matters.
I see you got an ASUS MB too. I think they're popular in this part of the world.
And there are more limited options here.
I've been lucky with the MB. I think I've been using it since 2013.
The people who built my machine in 2013 are no longer working for me. I think I was just too much for them.
They basically stopped responding to my messages. But the machine is still running, fortunately.
I'd have preferred to stay with them, because they gave good service. But I didn't get a choice.

@FaheemMitha You know much about machines. so I asked. I know nothing about.
which linux OS should i install? I know this is subjective.
Are they still in Bombay?

12:37 PM
@PrabhjotSingh I know almost nothing about hardware.
@PrabhjotSingh I use Debian. Ubuntu is also a reasonable choice.
There are of course a lot of other options.
@PrabhjotSingh Are who still in Bombay?
If you mean the people who were giving me computer service, then yes, I think so. But they are not interested in doing stuff for me.

@FaheemMitha You asked about it from them? I believe this is absurd.
I was about to install Ubuntu but its website doesn't mention this as linux OS.

@PrabhjotSingh Ubuntu is a Linux.

@PrabhjotSingh I'm not sure what you mean.
@PrabhjotSingh Ubuntu is a Debian Derivative.

.. and uses the Linux kernel, like Debian. It is therefore a Linux. See e.g. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(operating_system)

But website doesn't mention this. ubuntu.com
agreed Ubuntu is a free and open source operating system and Linux distribution based on Debian.

12:49 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Most distributions don't explicitly mention that its based on linux xP

@PrabhjotSingh Don't worry about what the web site says, or doesn't.

@PrabhjotSingh You could just try Debian to start with. Though Ubuntu is supposed a bit more "user friendly".

@FaheemMitha I "ll try Debian.

@PrabhjotSingh Ok. There are a whole bunch of distributions you could try. But Debian has some advantages over the others. Also a couple of disadvantages.

12:54 PM
@FaheemMitha Is this better than my current Fedora 27(on old machine)?

@PrabhjotSingh Fedora is probably also fine. Though it's been a long time since I really used a RH system.
If you are satisfied with Fedora, why not just keep using that?

@FaheemMitha Fedora is very good in every aspect but I failed repeatedly to install GNU Health.
0
Q: GNUHealth installation fails

Prabhjot SinghToday trying to install GNUHealth on my Fedora 27 (32bit). after creating user I tried to verify PostgreSQL. here's a file pg_hba.conf in /var/lib/pgsql/data. This shows following lines In this file i found no line containing local all all trust gpg --recv-key 0xC015E1AE00989199 returns this ...

@PrabhjotSingh There is no guarantee that will work on Debian either.

@FaheemMitha Ok.

@PrabhjotSingh I'm puzzled. The 2to3 command seems to be a Python thing.
But I don't know why it didn't work on Fedora. Was that not installed then?

1:03 PM
@FaheemMitha till "editconf" everything went smooth but not after.
It was installed on 4th attempt i guess.

@FaheemMitha It isn't installed by default
I believe it's part of the python-tools package

@PrabhjotSingh So you finally got it installed, then?
@AmithKK That's on Fedora, I take it.

Yeah

@PrabhjotSingh Does your friend work with computers professionally, or just as a hobby?

1:23 PM
@FaheemMitha He is a professional.
I asked cause I can change if someone here suggests something,

@PrabhjotSingh Change what?
You mean the Linux distribution?
That's a very subjective thing. But I recommend trying a few different options. Assuming you have time, of course.

No i mean things related to hardware.

@PrabhjotSingh Ah, you're fortunate to know someone who does it professionally.
@PrabhjotSingh Hardware is definitely worth asking about.
But haven't you already purchased it? You need to think about that before you purchase it.
In general, get the best motherboard you can affort. It's central to the machine, and a frequent cause of system failure.
Other things are important too, but the MB is central.

He is a friend of mine. If i tell him to change he will cjange.

@PrabhjotSingh Oh, ok. Well, in that case, I would ask around.
Check reviews, and so forth.
If your friend can provide a little of possible MBs, you could go online and check them. And/or ask on forums.

1:31 PM
@FaheemMitha You keep that in mind. I will check online.

@PrabhjotSingh I don't follow. I should keep what in mind?
Sorry, I meant to write - a list of possible MBs. Not "little".
Tell him you want something really high quality. Though of course it will be expensive. But you should shoot for something that will last for like 5 years.

I asked him. He said this is the best for you.
MB now I have is fine?

@PrabhjotSingh Oh.
@PrabhjotSingh I don't know enough to say.
But you should check online. Ask people.

@FaheemMitha What you do for living?

The price is kind of low. I'd expect a high quality MB to be a bit more expensive.
@PrabhjotSingh These days, not much.

1:38 PM
I have a sense you are dong realted to Genetics.

When I got my MB, it was 16,239. Though I think I paid a little extra than I would have online.

@FaheemMitha My whole cabinet is costing 17,000.
Processor+cabinet+MB -DVD writer = 17000.

@PrabhjotSingh I see.

@FaheemMitha 16,239 in year?

Back in 2013, it cost around 50k. I think I've spent a bit more money since, but not much. I replaced my sound card. Also my video card.
@PrabhjotSingh That was the cost of my new MB in 2013.
The ASUS Sabertooth.
I'm still using it.

1:45 PM
@FaheemMitha But Dollar has risen since then(against rupee).
Does exchange rate affects hardware prices?

@PrabhjotSingh Possibly. But the price of hardware in India is very inflated. The change in exchange rate doesn't really make much difference, I think.
@PrabhjotSingh That price makes no sense.
And it's an old MB, anyway.
Often people sell things for crazy prices on Amazon India.

< Often people sell things for crazy prices on Amazon India.
Sawa @Jesse_b

@PrabhjotSingh wat it do

I'm not really sure why hardware has to be so expensive here, especially as it is mostly manufactured in the Far East anyway.
I mean, can't it be purchased from Taiwan/Korea/China directly?
Of course, part of it is the insane taxation system.

2:02 PM
@FaheemMitha please say Make in India.
@FaheemMitha Taiwan/Korea/China are sweatshops of the world.
Prices will increase there too cause wokers are up against low wages.

2:17 PM
@FaheemMitha India and Pakistan are new members of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

2:57 PM
@PrabhjotSingh I'm all in favor of computer hardware being manufactured in India. But mostly it doesn't seem to happen.
@PrabhjotSingh I don't know what that is.

@FaheemMitha I will talk to after 9.

@PrabhjotSingh ok
Is the Hardware SE a good resource? Anyone here tried it?

3:18 PM
Just got a systemd answer to a 4 year old question.
1
A: Automatically starting smuxi-server

hsmithsI use this systemd .service file to start smuxi-server: /etc/systemd/system/smuxi-server.service [Unit] Description=smuxi irc After=network.target [Service] User=yourusername Environment=HOME=/home/yourusername ExecStart=/usr/bin/smuxi-server Restart=always [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.tar...

@Jesse_b Where do you check before buying hardware for Linux?

1 hour later…
4:23 PM
@FaheemMitha Hardware SE new thing altogether. But interesting

4:50 PM
@PrabhjotSingh It's not that new.

@FaheemMitha You don't know about SCO?

@PrabhjotSingh What about SCO?
And I'm not sure what SCO you are referring to.

5:08 PM
Americans are pushing for Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. China has BRI and SCO.

5:34 PM
@PrabhjotSingh I see.
An Asian power bloc is probably a good idea.
Though it still seems to be quite loose.
Since it's 15 years old, I'm surprised I've never heard of it.
Then again, it looks like India just joined.
I see Iran isn't a member. Nor are any of the other Middle Eastern countries.

5:57 PM
@FaheemMitha Have you heard of ASEAN? This is Asia's answer to European Union. ASEAN is very powerful group. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Southeast_Asian_Nations
Yes Both India and Pakistan joined recently.

@PrabhjotSingh Only vaguely, if at all.
None of these groups seem as visible as the EU or NATO.

China is EU's biggest trading partner. So she is handling Iran with caution. Plus Trump's pulling out of Iran deal and sanctions , China too is scared of things
@FaheemMitha people refuse to see but despite everything ASEAN is very powerful Bloc.

@PrabhjotSingh Neither India or Pakistan is listed on the Wikipedia page.

What is NATO? Turkey is part of NATO but she flirts with Russia and China. I could be wrong.

Never mind, I misunderstood, you were talking about SCO.

6:03 PM
@FaheemMitha Neither India or Pakistan is listed on the Wikipedia page.
Which page?

@PrabhjotSingh I don't understand. You are asking what NATO is?
@PrabhjotSingh I was confused. I thought you said India/Pakistan was part of ASEAN, when you were talking about SCO.

@FaheemMitha I know what NATO is. Turkey is part of NATO but she flirts with Russia and China.

@PrabhjotSingh Ok. Is that relevant?

@FaheemMitha Neither India nor Pakistan are part of ASEAN. Though both have joined SCO recently.

@PrabhjotSingh Yes, I got it.

6:08 PM
@FaheemMitha Every NATO state has it's own problems. And there is Trump. Ready to kill NATO.
EU no doubt is powerful. And it should be.
@FaheemMitha Don't take things seriously from a 25 rep user.

@PrabhjotSingh What?

@FaheemMitha I mean I'm a 25 rep user. Don't take things "very" seriously.
I could be wrong.

@PrabhjotSingh That's a weird thing to say. Rep doesn't mean anything.
Well, it means you've spent time on the site, I suppose.
And that people thought your contributions were valuable. So not nothing, I suppose.
But not really relevant to a discussion unconnected with the site.

@FaheemMitha A foreign affairs minister of a NATO country said in Washington DC that terrorists are a liability for us.

@PrabhjotSingh They've figured out from the Americans that screaming "terrorist" at regular intervals is a good way to get stuff accepted that otherwise would not be.
But I'm not clear what your point is.

6:20 PM
@FaheemMitha I'm saying NATO of cold war is different from modern NATO.
Every member state had it's own problems.
Building walls, tariffs on steel and aluminium. Russia is not a danger. But economically US is killing its allies

6:47 PM
@FaheemMitha I stand corrected A former foreign affairs minister said this in New York. thehindu.com/news/international/…

@PrabhjotSingh I wasn't saying anything about NATO, except that it's quite visible.
@PrabhjotSingh The US is generally bad news unless you happen to be a rich European country. Or one of the other European immigration settler societies. Or maybe Japan.
They bully whoever they can. Though, in fairness, that's not particularly unusual behavior. Apparently Germany does similar things inside the EU. Or so one hears.

@FaheemMitha indeed
But Germany 's response to embracing refugees is good except deporting some Afghans few days back.
@FaheemMitha yes they bully. Nikki haley while in India said India should not cooperate with Iran.
What will become of India's commitment to Chabahar Port?

7:08 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Those creeps are really fixated on Iran.
@PrabhjotSingh I'd not heard of this Haley woman before, but she doesn't sound very nice.

@FaheemMitha in short term, they want Iran out of Syria. Long term ambitions everyone knows.

@PrabhjotSingh I'd not heard about Chabahar Port.
@PrabhjotSingh I think they're just concerned about Iran's possible dominance in the local area.
They don't like competition. So they try to make the competition look like the bad guys. They aren't very sophisticated about it, but it still seems to work.
If you look at US news, they are constantly gibbering on about Iran, but nobody ever gives any reason why Iran should be considered a threat.
It's real Emperor New Clothes stuff.

A while back, someone posted an amusing list of the countries that the US and Iran had invaded in the last 50 years, side by side.

@FaheemMitha Haley is US ambassador to UN. In the run-up to presidential election, she cursed both Clinton and Trump.

7:16 PM
I'm not actually sure it was 50 years, but you get the idea.

@FaheemMitha get me that list. I am curious.
You read The Hindu article.

@PrabhjotSingh I don't remember, but doing a google search picks up some similar stuff. I'm sure there are multiple such things in the net.
This, for example

Q: List comparing countries attacked by Iran and the USA accurate?

Andrew GrimmIs the following infographic's comparison of Iran and the USA accurate? I'm not skeptical of the claim that the USA has attacked a lot of countries, but I am skeptical of the claim that, based on the criteria used for including countries on the "USA" list, that no countries would be included i...

The only answer is pretty stupid, and bends over backwards to make Iran look bad.
Not that Iran's govt are good - they seem like a bunch of religious nutjobs - but they really can't hold a candle to the US's incredible record of violent lawlessness.

U.S. defence officials have told New Delhi that India is not fully immune to the sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.

There are a couple of Iranians in the ELU chat room. I've talked to them occasionally about how things are in Iran. Their govt really sounds fairly awful.
@PrabhjotSingh I don't think threatening India is smart.
But I'm not sure how smart the Trump administration is.

7:26 PM
They do like to threaten people with sanctions.

@FaheemMitha If I'm not wrong Khamenei is their leader. Ahmedinejad spoiled their economy.
I'll talk to you later. Adios

@PrabhjotSingh Dunno. Probably. I don't pay attention to Iran's govt. Fortunately, I don't live there.
@PrabhjotSingh Take care.

4 hours later…

Hi Everyone. I'm trying to build OpenSSL 1.0.2 from sources on an old PowerMac. The PowerMac runs OS X 10.5 which is kind of old.

OpenSSL requires a 'make depend'. It is failing and I am trying to trace what is going on. What does this mean: https://pastebin.com/B2NT5ig3
