@RuiFRibeiro Don't do that "I'm a newbie" cleanup on closed post if it can be avoided. Editing them would put them in the reopen review queue, and they would be voted to stay closed. It would be better to leave them IMHO, so that the original user can edit instead.

Hi @PrabhjotSingh

@Kusalananda Does system users(bin, lp etc..) have extra privilege compared to normal users(abc) except their uid and gid values?
Being a root user, Why do we need to create a new system user?

4:29 PM
@FaheemMitha Hello
How are you ?

@PrabhjotSingh Hey. I haven't replied to your emails. I'll try to answer them later today.
@PrabhjotSingh Not good. About the same as yesterday.

@FaheemMitha I was free today. I will be free tomorrow. Have these helped you ?

@PrabhjotSingh The emails. Yes, it was helpful. But I need to look at what you wrote more carefully. Bear in mind that I am not a medical person, and what is obvious to you may not be obvious to me.
I spent a good chunk of the afternoon having a "business" meeting with some of my relatives. It was interesting.
Well, 5-8 pm, so maybe more like late afternoon/early evening.

Businessmeeting ?

@PrabhjotSingh Yes, business meeting.

4:34 PM
@FaheemMitha I didn't get it.

That doesn't describe it that well, but I'm not sure what else to call it.
@PrabhjotSingh Didn't get what?

@FaheemMitha anything serious ?

@PrabhjotSingh The meeting? Yes, I'd say so. Some of our relatives are cheating us out of money. We were talking about what to do about it.
We have a family Trust. It's a disaster zone.

Well, 5-8 pm, so maybe more like late afternoon/early evening.
I didnt get it.

@PrabhjotSingh Which part? That was the duration of the meeting.

4:37 PM
@FaheemMitha how these people cheat.

@PrabhjotSingh Sell stuff and keep the money for themselves.
And by stuff I mean property.

@FaheemMitha who owns property ? These people or The trust.

@PrabhjotSingh The Trust owns the property.

@FaheemMitha If title belongs to the trust, they can sell it.
Strange.

Some of those people are Trustees. Others are beneficiaries.
It's an extremely messy situation. It may be bad even for India.

4:49 PM
And how this can be checked.
Every Trust has its own kind of problems.

@PrabhjotSingh How can what be checked?

@FaheemMitha Trusts or even NGOs have these problems often.

@PrabhjotSingh Well, that's certainly possible. Even likely. Do you mean in India, or generally?

@FaheemMitha "Sell stuff and keep the money for themselves."

@PrabhjotSingh By checked, do you mean stopped? Or discovered?

4:54 PM
@FaheemMitha Generally, Conflict of interest or direct robbery as in this case. People in NGOs siphon off money. But i can't back it up.

@PrabhjotSingh You mean in India?

@FaheemMitha Stopped.

I think India is very lawless.
@PrabhjotSingh In India at least, I think it's hard. Because the "justice" system is very dysfunctional.

@FaheemMitha No, no. This is a global phenomenon.
@FaheemMitha Right to some extent. But people at bottom rung even don't avail justice system.
Btw yours is private or charitable trust ?

@PrabhjotSingh Private.

5:06 PM
@overexchange They do not have any special privileges other than what is given by their UID and their primary and secondary groups (if any).
@overexchange Because the root user is exempt from privilege checks (they always pass), and you definitely do not want to run all services on a system as root. It's may be too dangerous to run a service as root, especially if it's an outward-facing service. The service would be omnipotent on the system, and have access to all files.

5:58 PM
@overexchange Thanks for asking this.

6:38 PM
@Kusalananda Logged in with normal user(john), which also has no entry in /etc/sudoers . If john switches to user mike by saying sudo su - mike , then sudo su - mike program(owned by root) is run as root due to setid bit on sudo executable file. But still cannot switch to mike without password, because sudo program in itself enforces explicit security by checking the /etc/sudoers file. Is that correct?

7:06 PM
it can be any other command sudo vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config

@overexchange Thot seems to be correct, yes. I'm a bit busy tonight, so I don't quite have the space in my head to let every simmer as usual, but I assume that what you're saying is correct.

Hi @PrabhjotSingh. All this discussion might be academic (as in a waste of time), because according to the hospital, her condition has significantly worsened in the last couple of days. I just spoke to the ICU doctor, and he advised me to let her go. Not in those words, of course.
The main doctor is still not talking to me. Perhaps she is afraid of how I would react. I guess I should send her an email telling her that I won't lose it if she talks to me.
Or something like that.

7:46 PM
@overexchange You don't want to run services as root.
Hence, system users.
As to why, root has all the system privileges, so it's a security issue.

@Fabby lol
@Fabby Yesterday it was Xmas work party....paintball and then what must interest you more, upscalle all-you-can-eat restaurant with lots of meats and cakes....
@Fabby A restaurant for maybe around 1k people.....utter madness. The place was PACKED.

When I did interviews with programmers, I actually had an elaborate picture of servers interlinking and subnet masks and the whole shebang and 127.x.y.z subnetted and then asked:

@Fabby We left work at 2PM for paintball!

why can this application not talk to that application?
@RuiFRibeiro Urgh... I don't like crowded places.

@Fabby Devs are not good with that kind of stuff, in faculty I devoted loads of time to support them with that kind of knowldge and some other.
@Fabby Me neither, but then I was not driving ;)

I only got the answer once "Because all the servers are using the local loopback adapter"

10:30 PM
@Fabby ;) ;)

out of >50 <100 people...

@Fabby loopback interfaces can be abused for using VIPs....

@RuiFRibeiro Please elaborate...

@Fabby In my former job I devoted around 40-50% of my time for the developers....it also eased my future work. And as a bonus I knew what they were up to.
@Fabby This is the weekend of office xmas parties...at one point in the evening, in that restaurant you had 100 people in a train dance
@Fabby It was an anormally big establishment. Though the meat and cake qualities were above the normal quality.

@RuiFRibeiro read, edited and upvoted.
@RuiFRibeiro We had cod with pureed olives steamed in the oven with spinach&potato mash.

10:39 PM
So it's one of the days where searching for something brings up my own question and answer. In this case, sound.stackexchange.com/questions/44364/…

@Fabby Thanks for the edits!

@FaheemMitha I'm not on there or you would receive an upvote...

@Fabby We have so many cod around here that me and my wife are a bit tired of it. But it sounds lovely.

any question anyone posts in chat always gets an upvote from me.
@RuiFRibeiro Well, I'm not a fan neither, but it made my 2 housemates happy...
I like all fat fish:
salmon, halibut, mackerel, tuna, herring,

@Fabby The issue with cod and certain type of cheese I have is that the flavor is so strong that they pretty much kill all other flavours in any dish.

10:41 PM
And all seefood, including sea urchins!
(not too fond of fish)

@Fabby Thank you. But I wish I'd included more detail, because I have no idea what I did. :-)

@FaheemMitha :D :D :D
So you're headscratching your own answer???

@Fabby I like fresh tuna, soles, and some other deep sea fish I cannot recall the name.

I regularly look up my own answers on startpage.com when I install a new system...

@Fabby The bigger part of my questions were made to remember me of stuff....

10:42 PM
@RuiFRibeiro sole is like cod to me: Meh...
@RuiFRibeiro I have a few of those too:

@Fabby It depends how you cook it....

A: How to efficiently partition a single Windows-Ubuntu dual boot disk?

FabbyI know Windows well but Ubuntu not so well (or the other way around) Both Windows and Ubuntu are POSIX compliant operating systems and they both allow you to define which user has access to which individual file, directory, partition or disk! But they do it just a little bit differently (There...

@RuiFRibeiro That's with all white fish: I find it has little taste

@Fabby Oh, never mind, I found the "bus powered option", and now pavucontrol is showing the H5.

@Fabby My favourite is black scabbardfish

I like fish too. But rumors of heavy metal contamination are worrying. E.g. mercury.

10:44 PM
@RuiFRibeiro googling

And around here, that seems quite likely.

@FaheemMitha People using mercury to mine for gold?

They are ugly m....f.....
lol

@RuiFRibeiro Never had any, and yes, that's what I was reading

I used to be vegetarian and the vegan for some years, might do that again at least during weekdays...gotta shed some weight.

10:47 PM
@Fabby Where did you get that from? No, mercury etc. in fish.

I've had this one when I was a kid though.
(endangered now)
@FaheemMitha where would the mercury come from in India?
That's an Amazonian a Brazilian problem.

@Fabby stingray can be quite a delicacy, eating that carliage meat is quite nice.

@Fabby Industrial contamination.

@Fabby I see.

Mic still not working. Bummer.

10:49 PM
This is a list of countries by mercury production in 2016, based on the United States Geological Survey Mineral Commodity Summary for 2016. == References... ==

@Fabby Yes, but that doesn't mean you don't have mercury contamination elsewhere.

@RuiFRibeiro Yeah, that's where "mad as a hatter" comes from
@FaheemMitha This was in the 70s...
read the Wikipedia article that Rui shared.
Mercury is not a problem any more nowadays...
Straws up turtle's noses is!

@Fabby There's other stuff too.

@Fabby Problem of eating meat of any kind (beef, fish) is that they are bio acumulators....

10:52 PM
They're going to ban staws in the EU because of some picture of a turtle with a straw up its nose!

It is eating bigger quantities of poison at once.

@RuiFRibeiro So??? Are you a vegetarian?

@Fabby Was for many years.

The top predator is always the most poisonous!
@RuiFRibeiro I've had a vegetarian girlfriend for 2 weeks...

@Fabby LOL

10:53 PM
then I got sick of the food I had to cook.
and dumped her together with the recipes.
/shrug

@Fabby Many vegs do not know how to eat properly....I would make a joke about a veg gf, but I would be banned for inappropriate material.
LOL
@Fabby In the begginings I also did not know how to eat properly....

@RuiFRibeiro :D :D :D
@RuiFRibeiro Food has been very important to both sides of the family.
(mum's and dad's)
OK, I need a smoke!
BB L8R!

@RuiFRibeiro An anonymous reader...
<sigh>

@Fabby lol
@Fabby An anonymous snow flake.
@Fabby As 25 Euros per head yesterday, that restaurante comes cheap.
@Fabby Xmas dinner office party for my wife was in a restaurant for turists and they were ripped .... 100 Euro per head, and food not near as good, and small quantities lol

11:37 PM
@RuiFRibeiro true

11:54 PM
@Fabby Sorry, no time to deal with this now but pelase use flags for this sort of thing. That way, anyone can deal with it and it doesn't need to be me.
