@Kusalananda Is /bin/sh from solaris 10 box a korn shelll? /bin/sh -> /sbin/sh How do I know this?

@JohnDoea What does your own answer add that the other answers did not have?

user141350
@Fabby - in my view it focuses on the general concept rather than calculation, add some distinctions, and is more didactic and accessible.

@JohnDoea Again: What does your answer add that the other answers don't have?

user141350
@Fabby distinctions: Show file creation mask as a variable, show mask as a value, adds intros to logical operations needed to understand the concept well enough, addiing terminology (ugo, ∧ sign) and more.

@JohnDoea Answering. Let me re-read in 5 minutes.
@JohnDoea So what you're doing is posting an additional answer that summarizes all other answers and extends on the existing ones a bit?
(Smoke! BRB)
@JohnDoea Back.
What are you trying to accomplish with your answer?

user141350
2:47 AM
@Fabby this (what you described), and also, a communal-supportive comment or edit to show how 0666 ∧ 0555 -> 0444 is not subtruction even though it seems as such...

@JohnDoea Than an edit to one of the existing answers would be better.
What you do is not something we do here: Questions get asked and Answers get provided.
converting a comment from someone else into an answer or summarizing a bunch of answers and then expanding them is frowned upon.
@PrabhjotSingh o/

user141350
@Fabby I don't agree as edits are usually very hard to be accepted here --- there is a tradition not to deviate from original phrasings here in a general manner. This is too big for an edit IMO.

@JohnDoea Well, let's see what @StephenKitt says when he wakes up...
I'm going to sleep! Good night...

user141350
Maybe I misexplained myself: What I did was to write my answer based on reading on the subject and giving my own answer.

user141350
Okay

user141350
2:53 AM
Good night !

@JohnDoea Like I said: it's not something we do here.

user141350
Why not?

user141350
Anyone can write an answer based on how he understands it is best to answer...

E.G.: here is an example where I asked a question and then immediately answered
6
Q: Simple command-line calculator

FabbyIssue: Every now and then I need to do simple arithmetic in a command-line environment. E.G. given the following output: Disk /dev/sdb: 256GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Disk Flags: Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 1049kB ...

I got a better answer than mine, immediately deleted my answer and only undeleted after a week, to show that all the other answers are better than the original.
So if you have a problem, researched it and post a question and an answer in one sessio: Kodos to you! Sharing knowledge is all good!
If you ask a question, get a bunch of great answers and then write your own,
...
well... most people do not react well to that.

user141350
I don't know such a strict policy as you describe.

user141350
2:57 AM
That forbids me on answering a question a few days after posting it instead of at the same time...

It's not a policy: it's just how people generally feel like for investing their time

user141350
What do you mean by investing their time?...

@JohnDoea No, I'm not saying anyone forbids you to answer...

user141350
I left it to other people to decide what to do with their time generally....

I'm saying you're not going to get many upvotes with that kind of answer is all.
If I were you, I'd leave the answer in and see what the community says...

user141350
2:59 AM
Oh, I don't care, I'd rather learn this this way even in the cost of downvotes.

if you get tired of losing rep with that answer, just delete it and the negative rep will automatically reverse.
@JohnDoea I'm also not saying you cannot lear this way...

user141350
I know that if an answer is removed the rep goes back. This is a good answer in my view that just needs a small addition, I have no intention of deleting it...

Cool! No issue.

user141350
Well than I see no reason why you are right.

(But then: I'm a rep whore)
I'm not right, nor correct: I'm just stating how most people will feel about your answer is all.

user141350
3:01 AM
It's a fact I've learned from the answer so far and learned new things when creating this answer.

user141350
Okay

user141350
Whatever

user141350
:)

I need sleep anyway...

user141350
I don't care

3:01 AM
Good night!

Good night !

Hello, I'm a USB short and no way of obtaining one. Is there any way I could install Arch to a empty partition? I'm on Windows 10 and I have a Virtual Box with Arch set up if need be.

It does not appear to me that the answer shows much understanding of the topic at hand. "on the one hand it is distinct (but basically similar) to concatenation (x alongside y) which is a logical operation on strings and might result in xy, but on the other hand its done solely on binary streams" is just nonsense.
Using ∧ for bitwise and is a confusing choice, also.
And then "stream" is even linked to a definition showing that it's an inapplicable term to the use it's been put to. It has the structure of a good answer, but not really the content. I can imagine someone being disappointed by that.

@overexchange A Korn shell (ksh93) would set ${.sh.version} and possibly $KSH_VERSION (if it's recent enough). Also, the manual would maybe say.

@JohnDoea just to be clear, you’re saying you can’t see the difference between “0666 ∧ 0555 -> 0444” and “0666 - 0555” (which would be 0111)?
@JohnDoea I have accepted edits of yours in the past, which changed the wording of one of my answers. I (and others) rejected all your edits on the answer under discussion here for two reasons: you made (most of) them anonymously, and they were incorrect.
This edit suggestion should have been a comment.
In this one, you combined a valid editorial suggestion with an incorrect change (“and” → “add”).
In this one, you got the source of default permissions wrong, persisted in your trend of adding adverbs to reduce the scope of statements (“some newly created files”) which your own answer suffers from too), and got the effect of umask wrong (your first sentence).
Don’t use edits to request clarifications, that’s what comments are for.
If you’re going to suggest edits, be courageous enough to stand by them instead of suggesting them anonymously.
And I’m not going to waste more time on this but your summary answer contains quite a few mistakes.

I don't quite understand why unix.stackexchange.com/questions/480616/… was migrated to U&L. Is there something else U&L related other than the install happens to be on Ubuntu?

10:12 AM
@sebasth No idea. I don't understand a word of that question (since I don't use Drupal or even know what it is).

10:44 AM
@sebasth That isn't a particularly good fit, but is still on topic here.
A web forum would probably be better. Some web apps even have their own SE.

@FaheemMitha Drupal has its own SE

And in fact there is one for Drupal - drupal.stackexchange.com
@StephenKitt So I just realised. The question would probably be better off there.
Except that it came from there. :-)
Sorry, I'm a little slow today...

@FaheemMitha yes, which I find somewhat perplexing

@sebasth Me too. Is there no reason given for the move?

@FaheemMitha the admins (or at least, an admin) considered it off-topic: drupal.stackexchange.com/posts/272163/revisions

10:54 AM
@StephenKitt Though no specific reason given.

@FaheemMitha or we don’t have enough rep to see it

@StephenKitt Right.

drupal.stackexchange.com/questions/272163/… there are comments on the Drupal.SE question

@sebasth right, but they seem to refer to an earlier version of the question

11:19 AM
Does anyone know if there is any reasonable way of doing a diff between two different versions of a Libreoffice document? I'm trying to use the Compare Documents feature, but I'm not sure what the hell it is doing...

11:51 AM
@sebasth Yes, that's what I was just looking at.
> LibreOffice combines both documents into the reviewer's document. All text passages that occur in the reviewer's document but not in the original are identified as having been inserted, and all text passages that got deleted by the reviewer are identified as deletions.
I tried this. It wasn't exactly clear, at least to me.

I wonder if two factor authentication is a good idea. One downside is if the other "factor", i.e. SMS/email isn't working for some reason, you can't get access.

@FaheemMitha usually you can have multiple “other factors” to handle such situations (at least, for important services).

@StephenKitt Oh, you mean you could choose SMS or email?
Actually, in the case of this particular service, SMSs aren't working right now.
Though I'm not sure who to complain to.

@FaheemMitha yes, at least on several of the services I use: you can choose whether to use an authenticator (app or key), SMS, email, or a backup code — not all four, but at least two...

@StephenKitt ok.

2:15 PM
@FaheemMitha You can also use a two factor authentication with an algorithm similar to Google authenticator/authy which is does not depends on you getting an email /sms or having an Internet connection at all for getting the token

@RuiFRibeiro s/with an algorithm similar to/with the same algorithm/ ;-)
see for example FreeOTP, or Gemalto HOTP keys

@StephenKitt yeah.
I have authy in my phone and Google authenticator in my watch....

@RuiFRibeiro I'm not familiar with that.

@FaheemMitha Just an algorithm that you sync once with a known service and then it spits out "random" numeric codes every minute

@RuiFRibeiro I see. So really, "random" as in actually deterministic?

2:20 PM
@FaheemMitha yeah....
@FaheemMitha You can use it in fb, linked.in, gmail, github, whatever, and also configure VPN, SSH or other services for it.

Though the idea of using FB as part of any authentication procedure gives me a stomach ache.
@RuiFRibeiro Sounds thorough.

@FaheemMitha FB is an example....If I enter in an odd computer in FB, I need the 2nd factor+the password.

@RuiFRibeiro odd computer?

@FaheemMitha Way of speaking. When I enter for the first time in the service, I need the two factors, and I need them again after 30 days if I keep using that browser.
for fb

@RuiFRibeiro I see.

2:51 PM
Speaking of Authy, if I may interrupt, can we use two different device with authy (a phone and a tablet) ?

How can I add a module to a kernel? silead
If in /drivers/platform/x86/ there isn' t the silead_dmi.c file i can add it, but when i' ll recompile the kernel the module .ko won't be created

6:31 PM
@StephenKitt my bad of confusing it with subtraction based on your saying that it is important to understand it isn't (subtraction); **of course** 0666-0555 = 0111; I wouldn't say otherwise if it were a vertical mathematical exercise. meant to say I miss why 0666 ∧ 0555 -> 0444. I still miss that. It seems that the 1 number separating between 0666 and 0555 turns them into 0444 and this is why I confused there might be some philosophical aspect of subtraction here and based on what you said.

I edited anonymously because I was temporarily banned from editing from my account and browser, not

6:58 PM
@Archemar I don't see why not. But there are probably better forums for discussing this issue.

Bună ziua @FaheemMitha

Hey @Jesse_b
I see it's Romanian today.

Yeah
@FaheemMitha: How is your bnb business doing? Any interesting clients lately?

@JohnDoea Much of your answer is wrong, but Stephen also didn't say that "most of your answer is wrong" in the first place.

7:26 PM
No, sorry, he did (essentially correctly).

My brother Jesse_ b has come back.
Aloha @Jesse_b

7:39 PM
@Jesse_b Nothing particularly interesting. But boring is good.
Business is slow. It's picked up a little in the last few weeks, but the end of the year is generally busier.
And really, calling it a business is a bit of a stretch.

@PrabhjotSingh Hello Prabhjot. How have you been?
@FaheemMitha It is a business. You have customers and make money from them

Hi @PrabhjotSingh.
How are things?
@Jesse_b Not much money. Pocket change, really.
People think India is cheap. It's not really that cheap.
And there is basically zero social spending, which doesn't help.
Well, in fairness, not zero. But it's pretty damn inadequate.

@Jesse_b You were gone for a while. I noticed.

@Kusalananda Yeah, I'm sure it was relaxing for all :p

I am well. Glad to see u again. @Jesse_b @FaheemMitha

user141350
8:22 PM
Well I can't see what's wrong and why the answer was deleted. It's a pretty straightforward answer so I think examples should be given at least here.

How have you been @Kusalananda, and your cats?

8:38 PM
Is it just me, or is our sandbox broken?

@sebasth The cats broke it.

@RuiFRibeiro Which cats?

@FaheemMitha Kusalananda cats obviously :-P

@RuiFRibeiro Oh, I didn't realise it was obvious.

sandbox's current state might be attributed it being community maintained

8:42 PM
@sebasth If that refers to that page of question with its answers, that looks like a mess.

(Are litterbox and sandbox synonymous in English anyways?)

A litter box, sometimes called a sandbox, litter tray, cat pan, litter pan, or catbox, is an indoor feces and urine collection box for cats, as well as rabbits,

Well, I was thinking of sand box you might put your kids into, then about those cats who also visit there when nobody is watching, hence synonymous

@Jesse_b Been working a lot, so less often here. Also not as active in chat lately.
@RuiFRibeiro No, not my cats. Someone played around with <pre> tags...
@sebasth Not in British English... A sandbox is where you play. Well, cats may litter in it too, obviously, but the kids don't usually care or notice.
@RuiFRibeiro What confuses me is that a cat's "litter" is their young ones. A litterbox would be inappropriate for them.

@sebasth No. Totally different meanings.

8:56 PM
@Kusalananda Useless use of litter

@sebasth Well, marginally related, but quite different connotations.

@Kusalananda litter is also garbage

@RuiFRibeiro It's stuff you leave after yourself. So an appropriate word for kids.

9:15 PM
@Kusalananda Does Swedish also have a bunch of oddities like English?

@Jesse_b Probably. But when you're born into a language, you kinda become blind to the oddities of it.

The bandage was wound around the wound.
The farm was used to produce produce.
The dump was so full it had to refuse more refuse.
He could lead if he would get the lead out.

I always see things like that about English and wonder if it's something most languages deal with.

"Quite a few" is more than "some", but probably less than "just a few".
"consistent" and "consistency". Why are they almost the same? They don't even apply to the same class of things.

9:35 PM
I think they are pretty related, no?

How can I add a module to a kernel? silead

Q: Dpkg/apt problem with pyhon/ansible

Scorpioni installed a kernel:apt install linux-image-4.18.0-0.bpo.1-amd64, after I used apt autoremove. It has removed some python packages that i don' t remember, after I ran into some problems. Settings and gnome-tweak-tool disappeared, setting is still missing. I tried apt -f install, apt --fix-broke...

@Jesse_b Well, in a way. An archer can consistently hit the bullseye. His shooting is consistent. It has consistency? Consistency, isn't that like "texture"?

Ah yes, consistency does have multiple meanings
1)
conformity in the application of something, typically that which is necessary for the sake of logic, accuracy, or fairness.
2)
the way in which a substance, typically a liquid, holds together; thickness or viscosity.

Ah. In Swedish, the second word would be "konsistens", and you can't use it in the first sense (which is "konsekvent").

9:52 PM
Yeah, it seems like in English more words have multiple meanings than don't
Especially lately. Oxford and Merriam Webster will add any word that has been used twice to their dictionaries

10:07 PM
select is a bash thing right? Not available in sh?

Just update the 2FA tokens in my phone AND my watch ;)
Often it irked me having to pick up my phone for lastpass or similar...

I have a yubikey
It's really nice to just be able to touch it when I need to log in

@Jesse_b have to buy one to play ;)
well, for login in Google I touch my Android

Yeah my company bought it, but you can get them for under $10 I believe

@Jesse_b 30 euros I think, different model?

10:12 PM
Yeah there are many different models but they should all work
We got the "nano" model which is more expensive but the bigger models (still thumb drive size) were much cheaper

@Jesse_b Can I buy a clone in AliExpress? (joking)
@Jesse_b They already got a USB-C model, cool.
@Jesse_b $50

Yeah and honestly I don't like how small it is. I am always afraid that I will lose it
I would have preferred a bigger model but all my coworkers wanted the nano

@Jesse_b yeah, nano $60, bigger $50
@Jesse_b I am using Authy in Android and Google Auth in my Samsung Galaxy watch

I think I saw cheaper ones when I last looked but could be wrong

@Jesse_b my fault, was looking at USBC...No need for adapter in the Mac, but then it does not work in my corporate Linux lol

10:19 PM
Yeah the usbc ones are much more expensive
I got a pack of usbc to usb3.0 converters cheap but they weren't very high quality
They work fine but the sleeve that covers them came unglued and slides around lol
similar to those

@Jesse_b Got one low quality, and bought a high quality combo converter (HDMI, USB, VGA, ethernet) last black friday
@Jesse_b thanks, I got a couple adapter laying around. they are a bit bulky for my taste

I actually like it because I keep my yubikey nano in it so it's not such a small thing floating around in my backpack

@Jesse_b yeah....I keep a couple of very small keys in my wallet.

10:36 PM
@Jesse_b select is not POSIX. It's implemented by bash and some other shells.
@Jesse_b The following words may be recognized as reserved words on some implementations (when none of the characters are quoted), causing unspecified results:

[[

function

select
"unspecified", that is, by the standard.
