@Kusalananda We have shell scripts migrating from solaris to Linux machines... with #!/bin/sh as first line in every script...
# ls -l /bin/sh # On Linux
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 4 Jul 16 12:10 /bin/sh -> bash
> ls -l /bin/sh  # On solaris
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root          13 Nov  1 19:39 /bin/sh -> ../../sbin/sh
Do you think, I need to verify each line of code for migration?

Yay! Someone using the loop-device tag for the correct thing! unix.stackexchange.com/questions/481399/loop-device-eat-up-ram
@overexchange I would glance over the code at least, and the test run carefully. "Verify" is a strong word that implies making absolutely sure that you always get the same output. You may want to do this, but start with test running the scripts and comparing outcomes. When the outcomes differ, that's when you need to start looking at what's going wrong.

... also "verify each line" may be overkill, unless it's handling really sensitive information. Testing and comparing results may be the best approach. Also try feeding the script invalid data.

@jsb It warrants a proper question, yes. But why don't you just add ~/opt/julia-1.0.0/bin to your path instead?

@terdon I'm reluctant to do this because I don't want to clutter my PATH with every binary I install this way
But yeah, that's probably gonna be my fallback solution

@jsb Well, it looks like otherwise you'll have to set your LIB path and all sorts of things. If this is your own system, or you have root access, you can always install directly in /opt. Alternatively, and probably the simplest, add ~/bin to your PATH and then symlink the executable only: ln -s ~/bin/julia/julia ~/bin.

@jsb I also think you should ask a question on the main site, because if julia is itself an ELF binary and not a wrapper script (which your ldd confirms), and ~/bin/julia doesn’t work, adding ~/opt/julia-1.0.0/bin probably won’t either.
So it’s likely to involve a fair amount of back-and-forth, which should be done in question comments rather than chat ;-).

@terdon why my question is closed when a very similar one is a very good question
How can I add a module to a kernel? silead
How can I add a module to a kernel? silead
If in /drivers/platform/x86/ there isn' t the silead_dmi.c file i can add it, but when i' ll recompile the kernel the module .ko won't be created

jsb
@terdon I think I already did what you suggested to do "alternatively". My symlink points from ~/opt/julia-1.0.0/bin/julia to ~/bin/julia and ~/bin is in my $PATH.

so there there will be no silead in the kernel

1:42 PM
@jsb Ah, I though you had symlinked the dir, not the executable. But that's the sort of thing that makes it better to post a full question so all these details can be shown.
@Scorpion You should ask the people who voted to close, I didn't have anything to do with it. I would guess, however, that the main differences are: ifconfig is expected to be installed in CentOS7 by default, the OP of the second question included their PATH and wrote a clearer question.

@terdon also route is expected to be installed. They both are part of net-tools. The path in the end is pointless: I didn' t included it because I didn' t known why included it. Can you "open" the question?

jsb
@terdon Yeah, I guess I'll take another look at it later and if I can't figure it out, I'll post a question

Hello

Oh my, I've only recently learned about awk and I wish I had earlier. The time I could have saved in some cases...

2:42 PM
@Scorpion Why don't you edit and clarify what's going on. For example, try to find out what package route comes from and if that package is installed. Or, if you think it should be there by default say it and ask why it isn't. As it stands, your question basically reads like "I tried to run some command and it wasn't found. Why?"
Which is very different to "I tried to run a command that should be installed by default but it wasn't found. This is my $PATH, there is no file of that name in any of my PATH directories, I have checked that the relevant package is installed so why isn't this working?"
Just as an example. Basically, your question is too broad: we have no way of knowing if the relevant package is installed, or if you deleted it by accident etc etc.

@StephenKitt "asking a question is a privilege" and since my questions "are making worse the site" I cannot.,, I' m speechless

Dear @Kusalananda based on what I understood from what you explained to me on the different operations I published an answer. I ask you in a rare manner to review this (quite short and straightforward) answer and to help me explain why computational anding is not subtraction even though it's looks very much like it.

I also invite @StephenKitt to review and comment. I think I am very close to finally getting this concept and your help will be most welcome and most precious for me.
