8 hours later…
3:08 PM
what up?
anyone successfully installed postfix/dovecot (or any similar mail server tech) on Fedora 25?

@PeterDavidCarter Why? Is it difficult?

Process: 20474 ExecStartPre=/usr/libexec/postfix/aliasesdb (code=exited, status=75)

@PeterDavidCarter What log is that?
postfix should have its own logs. Is that what you're looking at?

systemctl status postfix.service

Hmm.
There probably is something under /var/log/postfix. Take a look there.

3:24 PM
`cat /var/log/postfix
cat: /var/log/postfix: No such file or directory`

@PeterDavidCarter Ok.
Apparently postfix logs to /var/log/mail.log. Check that.

@PeterDavidCarter Same what?

`cat /var/log/mail.log
cat: /var/log/mail.log: No such file or directory`

@PeterDavidCarter Oops, sorry. I forgot, you're not running a Debian derivative.

3:36 PM
narp, fake Red Hat all the way

Apparently Fedora uses something called journalctl.

yeah, I looked there -- last entry was 19th June; nothing since postfix install

Well, that log message is fairly unhelpful.

yeah, I asked there... no response as yet... I agree the message log could be more forthcoming
thanks for the help anyway; really 'preciate your efforts

3:54 PM
Try running it so output goes to standard out, or something. Just a random suggestion - I've never tried debugging a MTA.

it's cool; I'll sort something

4:42 PM
just switched to Debian in the end -- no biggie :)

@PeterDavidCarter That's very casual. :-) You don't care what distribution you use?

I just need a mail server so I created a new server image on my remote
I honestly like most versions of linux
but then I kinda like OSX and Windows too, so I'm a total OS whore

It's certainly unusual to like all of those.

usually I just want to get something done and I want the right tool for the job

5:01 PM
@PeterDavidCarter I see you freelance. Is work easy to get?

yes and no -- I have a backlog of jobs but it's not easy to complete them in a time-frame that makes them worth doing

@PeterDavidCarter Oh? How so? You mean they take too long for the money?

a lot of the time I end up focusing on personal projects because the projected payoffs are larger and they allow me to do what I really want to be doing
yeah

Do you charge per job or per hour?
I see you're in the UK. That's an expensive place.

usually about $500-£500 or what should be a week's work, but often there are complications that make them take longer

5:04 PM
@PeterDavidCarter So you charge per job?

yeah, I can't compete against people in India but I have a few regular clients

Hmm. That's probably not stellar pay for consulting.

my clients set the rate but £500 for what should take a week is usual now

@PeterDavidCarter Oh, I didn't realise there was a standard pay scale.

I guess there isn't, but when I mention what one client is paying and that another client is being prioritised then others up their offers

5:05 PM
Still doesn't sound like much. What are your specialities?

it's not really -- JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Angular
I can do Sys Admin stuff too
and bits of Python etc

@PeterDavidCarter I don't know Angular is.

it's sort of a JavaScript framework

What are your clients mostly?

Google developed it
mixed bag

5:07 PM
@PeterDavidCarter Ah, ok. I don't know JS.
I guess it's popular these days, with the web and everything.
How did you get the clients you have?

I have a 21 year old in America whose parents are rich and want him to be an entrepreneur
a driving instructor in my local area who makes quite a lot and wants an app to make things easier

@PeterDavidCarter Oh?
So private individuals?

a film maker (who's tbh very shit) and wants me to write web robots to promote her films

@PeterDavidCarter Web robots?

like spamming but less annoying
I create Skype, forum, Twitter bots etc

5:09 PM
@PeterDavidCarter Hmm. That sounds mildly anti-social.
Is it legal?

yeah, it's legal, but you have to be careful

That doesn't sound like much fun, really. But whatever pays the bills, I suppose.

as long as you're creative and you don't repeatedly bomb a forum with crap no-one cares
though proxies and Tor are still advisable

I see.

someone with a second-hand game store wants me to create a forums bot too
people aren't creative with them enough
that's why people have spam bots, it's usually boring or irritating

5:11 PM
> Peter Carter is a Web Developer and writer who left a long and stressful career in technical support

there's nothing wrong with the tech itself

Hmm. Was that like a helpdesk kind of thing?

yeah
they called it first line technical support
I got into a lot of trouble with the way I left that industry

Sounds nasty.

I wrote some emails...

5:12 PM
This is random idiots calling you up, and occasionally yelling at you?

"There is efficiency and then there is the battery farming of human labour and this is very, very clearly the latter."
didn't go down so well

@PeterDavidCarter If that's a quote, I don't recognize it. But there's always Google.

that's because I wrote it
I sent it to my supervisors
I'm not really conventionally employable now, but I get on well with most clients so it's ok

@PeterDavidCarter Oh, I see. You're quoting your email.
That shows admirable spirit. I've never told anyone I worked for what I really thought of them.
@PeterDavidCarter Define "conventionally employable".

I have a hole on my CV and my references are just random people I worked for who aren't well known
no big companies etc

5:17 PM
I see. How are things in the UK these days?

I can only speak for myself but they seem to be getting better
you seem very interested

Ah, ok. One hears mixed things. But overall I got the impression it was fairly dismal.
@PeterDavidCarter Well, I don't have a job. So...

yeah, it's not an easy place to live recently

I don't find the idea of consulting that attractive, but any port in a storm...

ah, well, I can't find you one... but you have a lot of Linux rep
surely there are people who want to hire you?

5:19 PM
@PeterDavidCarter Heh. Don't worry, I wasn't asking for one.

or maybe you have a product or something?
something that could make money, with the right people to help

It's just interesting to find out about other people's circumstances. One gets a sense of what is going on.
@PeterDavidCarter No product. But sure, there are lots of things one could potentially do.
My background is more academic, really.
If you googled me, you'd see a bunch of stuff.

I just know my motives are usually scouting for anything that could bring in cash whenever opportunities come up
that's just the position I'm in at the moment

And you work with a bunch of different OSs, apparently.

I do... mostly Linux these days, but I appreciate others

5:22 PM
I did live in the UK once, though there's no trace of that on the net that I know of. I was a university student.

My impression is that since Thatcher and her successors trashed manufacturing in the UK, things have pretty much taken a nose dive. Though perhaps not if you are a banker.

I try not to talk about that stuff not when I can avoid it
yes, I do have political opinions

@PeterDavidCarter Oh, no. Yes, I know that guy - he's the only other person on the net with my name.
@PeterDavidCarter Talking about politics is harmless. You never know, people might agree with you. And if they don't, you can stop.
And the destruction of manufacturing in the UK isn't really politics, it's economics. And an accomplished fact, afaik.

when you know a few politicians that starts to change

5:25 PM
@PeterDavidCarter How so?

I don't want to talk about it -- but even it's better to be known by no politicians than supported by 4 and disliked by 1, imo

@PeterDavidCarter I'm not following, but ok.

I do think the service economy focus in the UK is holding us back

Again, I was just remarking that manufacturing in the UK has been mostly destroyed. Which seems to be conventional opinion. Even though I suppose reports of its death could be exaggerated.

I think it's fairly well substantiated manufacturing is no-longer a significant part of the UK economy
service, construction, finances and...
the rental sector, in as much as you could call that a driver of progress in any way, which it isn't

5:30 PM
Hmm, my comments seem to be disappearing.
Oh, that one got through. Weird.

really?
can you repost?

I was just saying that I don't want to pretend to be an expert about a place I don't live in.
Though I was alive when Thatcher was PM, and remember what she stood for.

I hope I'm not pretending to be an expect about the place I do live in
only some things are obvious I guess

And I don't keep track of the UK much. Last time I visited was 1996, I think.
@PeterDavidCarter Well, since you live there, you're certainly entitled to your opinion.

there's a lot of Thatcher/anti-Thatcher stuff and I try to keep out of it and just say what seems true to me
I'm not sure if we still had coal mines we'd be this great egalitarian society

5:33 PM
@PeterDavidCarter It wasn't just about coal mines.

@PeterDavidCarter Oh? I thought it was mostly anti-Thatcher. :-)
She seems to be generally hated. Even now.

I was raised that way
I don't hate anyone and she did some bad stuff, no doubt
poll tax was a terrible idea, for example

@PeterDavidCarter Not hating people is generally good, I suppose. But hard.
@PeterDavidCarter Oh, yes. I remember that from when I was a student. I was young and naive and didn't understand what the fuss was about.
Though I still don't know what it was about, really.

a lot of it was about the ethos: aspiration etc, people saw it as greed and they had a point
but there is a positive side to aspiration too

5:36 PM
I remember she was big on people owning their homes. Not sure how that panned out.

yeah, that stuff got weird
but in theory the idea seemed appealing

So, do you use SE a lot? I used to, but I haven't been doing that much computer stuff recently.

I like the exuberance that comes with people thinking they can do amazing things
that's the positive side I guess -- it's really good to see people inspired
I was away for about a year
got back recently

Away from the UK?

5:39 PM
Oh, right.
I guess it's been a few years since I was active. How time flies.

heh
I question authority a lot
it's a thing I do
so I wasn't allowed back for a while

@PeterDavidCarter What, into SE?

yeah
I was banned

from all of SE for a year
though they allowed me back on to Internet of Things one day before my ban ran out
which was a bit weird

5:42 PM
@PeterDavidCarter That's pretty drastic.

it was a complicated thing

I'm gonna head off now, but it's been good chatting
I'm usually pretty wary if people take too much of an interest in me, so I hope I haven't emoted distrust etc

@PeterDavidCarter yes, good chatting with you. I'm usually on this chat room. Since around 2012 or so. Maybe earlier.
@PeterDavidCarter No, it's fine. I understand.

ok, hopefully catcha around

5:44 PM
So, I meant to say, stop by any time.

will do :)

4 hours later…
9:27 PM
Am stuck here. Seeking help to configure my apache config file, using emacs. I code using emacs
