@MichaelHomer I've heard the term Kiwi used to describe New Zealanders. Just wondering, is this term considered acceptable usage? Or is it considered pejorative?

Hey peoples! Why doesn't the answer here work in a subshell?

Q: Zip the contents of a folder without including the folder itself

JuicyI have a directory called folder that looks like this: folder -> root_folder -> some files I want to zip this directory into zipped_dir, I tried: zip -r zipped_dir.zip folder/* But this generates a ZIP that looks like this: zipped_dir -> folder ...

@FaheemMitha I'd think it depends on the context. "I'm not your pal, buddy." "I'm not you buddy, guy." "I'm not your guy, friend." "I'm not your friend, pal."
15:49
@AaronHall Um. That left me feeling confused. Let's say neutral third party usage.
@AaronHall The answer by Romeo?
16:19
@FaheemMitha yeah, it doesn't work in a subshell (cd demo; zip ...)
@FaheemMitha It's pretty innocuous. I've heard Kiwis use it to describe themselves.
Kiwi is the nickname used internationally for people from New Zealand, as well as being a relatively common self-reference. The name derives from the kiwi, a flightless bird, which is native to, and the national symbol of, New Zealand. Unlike many demographic labels, its usage is not considered offensive; it is generally viewed as a symbol of pride and endearment for the people of New Zealand. == History == The first New Zealanders to be widely known as Kiwis were the military. The Regimental Signs for all New Zealand regiments feature the kiwi, including those that fought in the Second Boer War...
@AaronHall Are you sure? It should and, on my system, does.
@AaronHall Ask a question.
@terdon Ok.
I don't really know any NZ people, so...
I sometimes wish I could send out a general message on this site:
DO NOT USE JUNK HARDWARE!
People buy all sorts of crap, then come here asking about Linux support. Come on, people. Isn't your time worth something?
16:36
A lot of people have more time than money, unfortunately.
Apparently so. But even good hardware isn't that expensive these days. Plus it doesn't seem to occur to many people to check for Linux hardware support. It isn't that hard.
To check for it, I mean.
A lot of stuff is supported by Linux even when it doesn't occur to the manufacturer to say so on the box. I just got a wireless mouse that said it worked on Windows and Mac - no mention of Linux - but it works just fine.
@AaronHall Was it a USB mouse? Yes, sometimes generic drivers will work. But one should be careful.
Mice aren't generally a problem. But there are classes of hardware that are.
I figured if it didn't work, I'd just return it.
@AaronHall Fair enough.
Ah, another Python user.
16:41
Python's zipfile module worked for my limited purpose but it doesn't keep directory structure, unfortunately...
