4:00 PM
TIL: using a gdm3 + systemd + xfce configuration, you cannot start a user session when the root partition is full
found culprit... I think:
 /etc/gdm3/Xsession[1872]: mkdtemp: private socket dir: No space left on device

@Braiam Isn't that the case regardless of the version of *nix you're using?

@Fabby no, x sessions should be able to start even with a read-only root partition, so failing because it lacks disk space is ridiculous

1 hour later…
5:18 PM
Apparently Michael Niedermayer is stepping down from ffmpeg... lwn.net/Articles/653079

5:47 PM
@Braiam the partition containing /tmp, not necessarily the root partition

6:08 PM
@derobert Oh, that's a shame.

6:34 PM
@casey tmp is a tmpfs on my system, so that shouldn't affect it
or maybe is not...
> * Don't mount /tmp as tmpfs by default and make it possible to enable this
feature via "systemctl enable tmp.mount".
GREAT!

Is it just me, or does mpv not work properly on jessie?

@FaheemMitha blame libav->ffmpeg migration, it works fine on testing through

@Braiam Oh. Hmm. Have you tried it on jessie?

I run it on jessie all the time. But I have the deb-multimedia version...
anyway, heading home

@derobert Oh. Does that play nice with jessie?

6:44 PM
@FaheemMitha yes

@derobert Ok. I might give that a try.

well, as much as it plays nice with anything. Actually haven't had it cause any breakage for a while now.

Actually, I don't see it in apt-cache policy mpv. Is it called mpv?
Oh, I see I'm still using the wheezy deb-multimedia.

> * Stop installing tmp.mount by default; there are still situations where it
becomes active through dependencies from other units, which is surprising,
hides existing data in /tmp during runtime, and it isn't safe to have a
tmpfs /tmp on every install scenario. (Closes: #783509)
- d/rules: Ship tmp.mount in /usr/share/systemd/ instead of
/lib/systemd/systemd.
- systemd.postinst: When tmp.mount already was enabled, install tmp.mount
into /etc and keep it enabled.
- systemd.postinst: When enabling tmp.mount because of RAMTMP=yes, copy it
ARG!

@Braiam upon further inspection, mkdtemp will create the temp directory in the CWD, not under fixed path

6:58 PM
why stuff has to be so complicated?

i prefer tmpfs /tmp not to be default myself, as I have better uses for memory than wasting it on a temp partition.

7:17 PM
my disk is a good old spinning one, so using ram instead of the slow disk may speed up some operations when the write cache is busy with other stuff already

7:56 PM
@Braiam its all about use case. I have 18 TB worth of spinning disk but only 24 GB of RAM, which I tend to utilize fully in my research analysis. Even when my code isn't using all of my RAM having my recent datasets cached has a bettery payoff than giving up some of that space to /tmp.

@Braiam Get a second-hand Intel SSD... (I got an 80GB for <50€)

@Fabby Does it have a warranty?

No...
OTOH it has:
SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 5
Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds:
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0020 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 0
4 Start_Stop_Count 0x0030 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 0
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0
9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 17953

@casey well, your usage isn't precisely the common one, right ;)

@Braiam never claimed it was :)

8:16 PM
@derobert sorry to bother you with such a triviality, but "siège social" doesn't sound like "head office" at all... What comes to my mind is "QG"...
(Using English as not to ¶ı§§ off any one present too much)

@Fabby ????

@derobert You're not native French speaking?

Nope.

Sorry then... :-)
"De Robert" sounds very French to me...

I think Gilles is...
Italian, actually. But my family has been in the US for a bit, so I only speak English.

8:19 PM
Niente in Italiano???
(nothing in Italian???)
(except probably the cooking...) ;-)

@Fabby “Robert” is French, but not “de Robert” as a name

Actually, with a small "D", it's an aristocratic French name...

io no capisco l'itliano

@Fabby is it?

@casey Certo! ;-)
@Gilles Yup...
@Gilles Probably French aristocracy who fled the Italy during the French revolution and then emigrated to the US...

8:22 PM
@Fabby can't be much of a family since none of them have any Wikipedia page

yo hablo un poco espanol. sunt vorbesc romaneste

@casey No Romanian here...
@Gilles Sorry to bother you with such a triviality, but "siège social" doesn't sound like "head office" at all... What comes to my mind is "QG"...
(Using English as not to ¶ı§§ off any one present too much)
@Seth: how come you're in on a Friday-evening???

@Fabby if you want to discuss French, hop in chez Cosette

@Gilles Il n'y a personne!

and provide some context. “Siège social” can certainly be a valid translation for “head office”.

8:25 PM
@Fabby Aren't I usually in?
It's not actually evening here yet either :P

@Seth Not on a Friday...
;-)

Dunno what you think I should be doing xD

@Fabby Where did you buy it from?
@Seth Out merrymaking, presumably.
Or making merry, if you prefer.

It's a bit too hot for that right now lol.

8:32 PM
Wine, women, song. That sort of thing. And dancing too. I don't know why they leave out dancing. Either (a) because it doesn't start with w, or because wine and dancing don't really mix.
@Seth The heat wave is still going?

Yeah :(

Where is your location again?

It stopped for about a week and now it's going full strength again.
@FaheemMitha I'm in the Puget Sound region of the US.

@Seth What state is that?

Washington.

8:34 PM
@Seth Ah, Ok. @derobert, how about you?
Heat wave much?
I thought that area mostly stayed cool and wet. I guess it's the global warming thing, that was supposed to be imaginary...

Me what?

@derobert Are you hot? And I don't mean that in the Hollywood way.
@Seth how far are you from Seattle?

@FaheemMitha It's 95°F here
= 35°C. And somewhat humid.

@derobert Is that bad? Or unusual?

About normal for this time of year.

8:37 PM
@derobert ok
But not for Seth, apparently.

Well, he is thousands of miles away...

@FaheemMitha A friend who had it lying around in a cupboard...

@Fabby oh. Might be Ok, then. How long had he used it for?
@derobert That's true.

@FaheemMitha Dunno... A couple of years surely...
That's why I said Intel...

@Fabby Hmm.

8:40 PM
They're good!

@Fabby Is that relevant?
@Fabby Oh. Right.

@FaheemMitha Yes, it is...

Workld_Media_Wear_Indic is probably the attribute to look at.
Google will surely know

@FaheemMitha Closer than you think, further than you wish ;p

@Seth Uh, what? I think that qualifies as a gnomic utterance.

8:43 PM
Gnomic? Step 1, steal underpants. Step 2, ..., Step 3, Profit!
Steel underpants are different entirely... :-/

@FaheemMitha ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

8:57 PM
I have no idea what the hell you are talking about.
Though if I had to guess, it's a reference to some game.

@FaheemMitha Well, yes, but...
@FaheemMitha South Park

@derobert Oh, God.

Hello from Windows 10.
This is interesting.

Users who recently installed Windows 10 should be exempt from offensive flags... they have a reason.
