A: How to defer variable expansion

mikeservAs I take your meaning, I don't believe that any of these answers are correct. eval is not necessary in any way, nor do you have any need even to twice evaluate your variables. It's true, @Gilles comes very close, but he does not address the problem of possibly overriding values and how they sh...

It took forever to find that. I have too many answers.
@FaheemMitha - it means cartoons > homework
In that answer I have a little script reflecting differing opinions on the worthiness of calligraphy.

@mikeserv That's an unusual inequality.

I'd say it's more normal than you'd think.

Q: Split large file into chunks without splitting entry

user2036066I have a rather large .msg file formatted in the UIEE format. $ wc -l big_db.msg 8726593 big_db.msg Essentially, the file is made up of entries of various length that look something like this: UR|1 AA|Condon, Richard TI|Prizzi's Family CN|Collectable- Good/Good MT|FICTION PU|G.P. Putnam & So...

I've now written 2 different solutions and the Q has morphed into a much more subtle 3rd version of what it was originally understood as

hey @slm, what's happening?

haha :D yeah
I interpreted his question twice wrong
@slm I gave up and thought you might help him

8:14 PM
@slm - thank you for taking the reins. My eyes hurt from staring at the console all night. I couldn't bear the idea of yet another sedisode.

:D

I'm wishing I didn't now
I have to leave for a family vacation so now I'm stuck, I'm practically out the door.

Well, what needs fixing? Maybe I can help some...?

slm
@polym - I think the only way to do what he wants is to run 2 loops over the file, the first identifies the cut points and the 2nd time will do the splitting

If you'll allow it, I don't have to post an answer and if I seem some improvement on your own I could edit it?

8:17 PM
@mikeserv - you can take my approach and try and help him, I'll gladly delete that A for one that works. Besides the csplit was your idea

One way to do that is like: split=$$SPLIT$$ ; { cat <file ; echo $split ; } | tee - | sed 1,/$split/{do stuff};/$split/,${other stuff}
You get two passes at the file in the same stream and a pretty reliable marker to split it.

slm
@mikeserv - if you have an idea go with it, I'll leave my A merely for ref. for now but if someone produces a working solution I'll delete it later tonight

@slm - maybe... I'll see if it sparks enough interest after reading through it again. I'm not very enthusiastic about it though...

slm
@mikeserv - my enthusiasm on that Q is waning too 8-)

Anyway, your answer should already be enough to build on for anyone to do what they need - OP included.
Have fun with the family, guy.

yeah we're going to a hotel w/ a pool so my kids are excited
me too, I never take vacations

Very nice. dunk the children

slm
dunk the 3 children 8-)

8:33 PM
@slm There's a reason I don't like those types of questions...

hey guys, do you know where to ask questions about build tools like gradle?

@polym Stack Overflow, probably.

hmm ok
thanks
:)

Depends on the exact question. If it's basic computer support (e.g., how do I run this installer?) it doesn't belong there.

might be a good idea to post questions about frameworks that are used by servers in server fault?
well its about specific dependencies e.g.

8:41 PM
stackoverflow.com/help/on-topic says what to ask on SO; serverfault.com/help/on-topic says what to ask on Server Fault; etc.

hm ok thx :)

@slm - if you're not dunking the kids yet, I think I did it:

A: Split large file into chunks without splitting entry

mikeservHere's a solution that could work: lines=$(wc -l </tmp/file) seq 1 $((lines/15+1)) $lines | sed -n 'N;s|\(.*\)\(\n\)\(.*\)|\1,\3{\3{:n\3\ /\\n$/!{N;bn\3}}\ w /tmp/uptoline\3\ d}\ \3|;h;x;s/\(.*\)\(\n.*\)/\1/p;x;s//\2/;$d;D' | sed -nf - /tmp/file It works by allowing the first sed to write th...

anyone can see why is this on topic? unix.stackexchange.com/q/138370/41104

@Braiam No. Development tools are on-topic, but not if you're using them on Windows!

@terdon In your answer here I think you meant sudo cp /foo/etc/sudoers~ /foo/etc/sudoers vs. sudo cp /foo/etc/sudoers~ /foo/etc/sudoers~.
Not a big enough difference for me to edit it ;)

Q: Can I chain pgrep with kill?

Tomáš ZatoI have noticed that | is used to send results of first command to the another. I would like to kill all processes that match a name. This is what pgrep normally does: $ pgrep name 5089 5105 And multiple arguments seem to work with kill: sudo kill 5089 5105 But this is wrong: pgrep name | k...
