@mikeserv I know there isn't but I've always needed it when using the proprietary drivers, I mean xorg.conf is still fine it's just not needed anymore.
@mikeserv exaclty, it's not quite as straightforward as blacklisting nouveau. Not sure but I would expect that to go straight to a broken system. You also probably need to disable the onboard card in the BIOS. Or I did with my Lenovo
I understand that of course - sorry for the outburst, but the vacuum exploded.
Anyway, I just meant feel free to build on my comments - I only went there cause he asked, but I don't have time to flesh it out. Sorry. No offense meant.
@slm my t4500 had both intel and nvidia, I had an option in the BIOS to choose one or the other or OS switching. I'm wondering if the annoying OP I will try to help also has that
@mikeserv yes, I think it's nouveau also but you need to install the proprietary before blacklisting nouveau and you might also need to disable switching
@Gilles what's a good way of flagging for mod attention and asking to convert to a comment? You mean include the URL of the post it should be made a comment to?
What exactly does this mean? It sounds like the more flags a post has, the more reviews it will ened to get dealt with:
> Effective # of reviews required == ReviewsRequired + # of applicable flags (where ReviewsRequired is 2 on Stack Overflow, 1 everywhere else). So 1 VLQ or NAA flag means EffectiveReviewsRequired=3.
So flagging posts makes it harder to get rid of them?
When I see VLQ or NAA A's in the review queues I've been DV'ing them if they haven't been so, which enables the delete link, I've then been voting to delete them to get rid of them.
laptop lenovo idea pad u430p, Linux Mint 16. Like I said in the title occasionally graphic freezes while all other systems continue to work normally (music plays, for example). Sometimes it unfreezes after minute or so, sometimes not and I had to hard reset the machine.

@slm ah, good point. I'll see if he responds first though, the same user was being an ass when I tried to convince them to move their post here from AU so I'm not feeling too charitable.
Thank you for all the attention and efforts you brought to my question, but it seems that just upgrading kernel (I downloaded deb from ubuntu kernel deb fixed the problem). — Moonwalker7 mins ago
@terdon arg! Those are the kind of Q's I don't like "uh, I updated and it suddendly went away", heck, you should have before then specially with hw stuff
Is it ok, if I get an answer from some other site and post it as an answer by giving the specific details related to the question along with the link or should I just give the link in the comment section?
btw, you told me you are in a kinda testing right? when you use the numpad and have the numlock on, does polkit accept the numbers or it just behave like you don't have the numlock (forget about it if you use a lappy)
One of our users posted a comment on this question pointing out that the question had been asked (not cross-posted, different user) and answered on Ask Ubuntu. Since I had found the question intriguing and the answer over on AU was quite good, I took the liberty of copying the entire answer verba...
@Braiam yeah, I saw. Radu started, then retracted his vote but by then it had started. It is not actually a dupe. But that's OK, as long as it stays there, the OP's misunderstanding is unlikely to be shared by many others.
the "original" date/at one I'd written, since I moves almost all of it to the new one and it turned out I wasn't answering the question (the OP had said something else in the comments) so I figured I may as well.
@slm @Braiam what am I missing in the machineA,B,C question? Why not just do scp t1_1980_*_200003_5.data on each machine and be done with it, why bother checking if the files are there or not?
> I have neither the right nor the desire to gain rep from someone else's work
you're so not hooked enough on the rep thing. I totally want to gain rep from someone else's work. (not that I would do it of course - that would be unethical. but I totally want it.)
The original version said he wanted to copy which is what was confusing me, if he already has the files, I don't understand why he didn't check in the first place
I am trying to find out which files are in machineB and which files are in machineC.
And I need to run my shell script on machineA to figure out which files are in machineB and which files are in machineC
I have around 300 files distributed in machineB and machineC.
Now I would like to find ou...
@terdon are you around? i got a (polite) reject with resubmission from the Annals of Applied Statistics. The journal suggests a computational biology journal or informatics journal. I thought maybe you could tell me what you think, if you have a moment. I can send you the referee reports if you want to look at them.
@terdon Ok, thanks. The editor says the paper was not methodologically novel enough (its bog standard Bayesian model selection), so hard to argue with that, really. She suggested a computational biology journal or a informatics journal. Unfortunately this methodological novelty is a common criteria for such journals.
@terdon if i send you the reviews, you would have a better idea. can I do that?
@terdon she didn't actually find any fault with the paper, nor did th other reviewer, so the reviews are pretty short and non-technical
@terdon i was really looking more for feedback on what computational biology / bioinformatics journals would accept. i kind of had the impression you work more in that erea
with my paper, two concerns. maybe too much statistical content, and not enough discussion of the actual data set. i'm not a biologist, and have difficulty saying meaningful things about biology data sets
@terdon Ok, I actually sent you the paper earlier but i can resend. i think i have your email - i'll check
@terdon i can resend you the paper + the reviews. what i would like to know is what reaction i might get from a computational biology / boinformatics journal. would i need to make changes? i haven't ruled out sending it to another statistics journal
@FaheemMitha OK, I just had a quick look and yes, in general the bioinformatics journals would expect a bit more "sauce", meaning some more explanation in English as opposed to math. You will probably be asked to provide a comparison of your method to other similar methods that have been used to predict RSS motifs, explaining both the differences and why yours is better/faster/more productive or whatever
@terdon right. i don't know "molecular systems biology". checking now. i think a mid-range one is fine - but i just want to know what they would be looking for
@FaheemMitha The best thing would be to have a look at similar papers. Basically, you and I approach this from opposite sides of the spectrum, you're at the math end and I at the biology one so I don't really know.
@FaheemMitha The Impact Factor is how journals in the life sciences are ranked. It is horrible system that depends on number of citations to give the journal a score. Absolutely idiotic and there are some initiatives to change but the IF is very important in Biology
@FaheemMitha My degree is pure biology yea, my PhD and subsequent work has all been computational but always on the shallow end so to speak, never pure math or algorithms,
@terdon sure, but this does quite a lot of biology-side analysis. which would be beyond me, probably. it might be possible for me to look at the classification i get and see if it seems to be picking up anything biologically meaningful, but i am not optimistic
i mean, i don't do anything but that. i was hoping the fact that the method works and had not been applied to this area previously - both of which the editor accepts, would be enough, but apparently not
@terdon will your spam filters be upset with 1 pdf attachment and 3 small text attachments?
As a general rule, the bioinf journals are fine with pure method as long as there's a clear biological application. So, explain method, explain how it could be applied to bio, provide an example of said application and compare its performance to similar approaches
@FaheemMitha yeah, I haven't forgotten your question, I'm just not sure I can give a better answer. Just think of motifs as short sequences that can be described by weight matrices or HMMs or even sequence logos
it is possible a more biologically oriented journal would be more interested in the actual result/algorithm. it doesn't mean a thing to a statistician, obviously
they're more concerned about things like methodological novelty
@FaheemMitha the bio ones want both, depends on which one. You could always go for Plos One as well. They have no scope limitations and only check that the work is well done as opposed to fascinating, novel etc.
@FaheemMitha OK, never mind my email, I just received yours finally
@terdon, thing is my job is f$$$$$$ boring and I don't have that much work also and I'm about to quite, so playing while being payed a lot is my almost only way to enjoy my 8hours of presences
@Braiam I don't think anything will happen to me if I know about 2048. Hey, this isn't the secret of the universe, life and everything, is it? If so, you really need to tell me.
@FaheemMitha as I was lost after the second phrase it was not really a problem not to have the end :D
@Braiam thank you too make me discover the dog version, let's facebook that very important information to the wolrd :D
That what so nice on internet when You think that Robot unicorn attack was something ultimately stupid someone manage to surprise you even more...
the best site I know for that is definitely : ==> http://www.theuselessweb.com/ <== (to any person subject to distraction and easy amusement please be carefull before going in there. You've been worn)
@Kiwy well, research work is inherently specialist, so that is not surprising. everyone has the same experience most of the time. sometimes even in one's own topic area
@FaheemMitha it has an modicum of strategy needed to "win", which is enough for some people. I played twice and then watched one of the AI solvers and never looked back.
I answered it yesterday and the other answer was accepted earlier. But today morning, when I saw it again, my answer was accepted. Now, it is getting downvoted. Why is it so?
@derobert so people are continuously visiting SE sites? seems unlikely. i thought it might be when then computer last had any activity on the keyboard/mouse. even that seems a little odd
@Grzenio apt-show-versions, then pass it the package names as arguments
I was under the impression that the maximum length of a single argument was not the problem here so much as the total size of the overall argument array plus the size of the environment, which is limited to ARG_MAX. Thus I thought that something like the following would succeed:
env_size=$(cat /...
Christian must be doing some patches his end. wonder what the story is
multimedia on linux is a bit of a madhouse. to quote that guy - can't we all get along?
@derobert i once asked a "write my script" question on SO. it summarily got 5 downvotes and was then closed. i got the message and deleted it. my feelings were quite hurt
@FaheemMitha R would work too, I imagine (it's on my long TODO list of things to learn someday)... But everyone knows how to do sums on a spreadsheet, I think.
@FaheemMitha Yeah, SO has a way of sending people off to never come back... I don't think they care. There will be a thousand more new questions long before the first person has managed to finish complaining to Hacker News.
I normally won't downvote people asking questions for the first time, but he already has 125 reputation and at least he should make the question presentable if not understandable :)
