TimWhen I just used pipe in bash, I didn't ask this question. But when I read some C code example using system call pipe() together with fork(), I wonder how they are implemented at the big picture level, including both unnamed and named pipes. It is often heard that "everything in Linux/Unix is a ...

dr jerryI cannot use tar -tz as the solaris version I'm using does not accept the -z option. Q: Why the dot in find commands?

FarmBoyTypically, one sees find commands that look like this: $ find . -name foo.txt when the search is to begin from the current directory. I'm finding that on my machines (Ubuntu, Cygwin) I get the same results without the dot. Why is it typically included? Is it just a convention to be explicit, ...

Q: How to allocate more space alongside Windows

Vitaly MijiritskyI installed Ubuntu on an old laptop, alongside WinXP. Q: Duplicate policy - are we wanting "good" duplicates?

Shawn J. GoffI recently asked a question that could be considered a duplicate. I believe this falls into the category of a good duplicate question; of the kind that Jeff Atwood...

Q: Is there any difference between e3fsck and e4fsck on CentOS / RHEL systems?

WesleyDavidext4.wiki.kernel.org makes it sound like e2fsck was simply renamed to e4fsck so that e4fsprogs and e2fsprogs could coexist without overlapping. However, there is no mention of any difference in the code of the command. The e2fsck man page makes no mention of ext4, but does mention that it works ...

@Caleb and others: Do you understand the revised version of this question? I don't. The asker has accepted my answer, which addresses the original version, but I don't like leaving a broken Q/A pair around.

@Gilles yikes... what a confusing question.

8:03 PM
@Gilles No as a matter of fact I do not. I even edited it hoping that if I cleaned up the English and formatting it would become clear and it didn't. What was a statement and what was a question was totally ambiguous to me.
I have a feeling the OP didn't know he was even trying to test or document with that edit. Based on his last comments it seems he might be getting the picture, but the question is still nonsense.
Eventually everything but the initial question should probably be removed. I don't know if we can get him to do this or not, but it might be worth a shot then we can clean up anything when he's done.
The guy is still around ... he's pinged me off site and it looks like he's still checking back here, so maybe we can just ask if he could clean up his own question for the sake of future visitors.
...and there he goes with another question :)
