11:38 AM
hey guys
when I log in... I have to scroll down to the bottom of all the recent text... why can't I log in and already be at the bottom? :)

On chat? I thought it did scroll to the bottom by default

yes.. on chat... I had to scroll down now

That sounds like possibly a bug, I don't get that behavior. What browser?

latest FF, im going to log into the tavern and check if it happens again

11:42 AM
nope.. works ...
wierd...
freak occurence bug
fun

SO chat launched today, so there's considerable excitement over there

i don't understand.. I thought this was SO chat?
or is this SO meta chat?

Yeah, this is meta. There's chat.stackoverflow.com now

I really don't see the point actually

I expected it to be dead, but there's actually quite a few people

11:45 AM
having more chat rooms

I don't either. They're going to make chat.stackexchange.com at some point to be the central place

I can see why it would be used, and maybe even popular... but i have no idea how it can be usefull
but while we are getting new features.. you know what would be cool ?
if this could be integrated with pidgin, or some API
i think i read something bout IRC posibilities

Yeah, the community is working on unofficial IRC and XMPP interfaces (Pidgin supports both)

Q: IRC access for the chat?

jrkWill there be any way of accessing the chat over IRC? As beautiful ajax interfaces are ... IRC is still #1 for chats.

Q: Offer an XMPP method for chat

Greg HewgillThis is a request for the SO chat system to have an XMPP interface. The whole idea of a chat system is to bring people together, and a key way of doing that is to allow people to access the system using more than one method. Right now there's a web interface, but it's limited to being a web inte...

Pidgin supports IRC?
I have to check that out

Not well, but technically

11:48 AM
haha.. oh.. ok
I love the idea of chatting via the terminal
but find it a bit impractical
so pidgin doing irc... would be... fun

impractical? nothing better than irssi

I do use the terminal for IRC and AIM, but I plan to keep using the web interface if only for oneboxing
:239715 That's what I use
irssi + bitlbee = magical possibilities

been there... tried that... its good for quickly getting info from my favourite software group

:239720 exactly
@StefanLiebenberg pidgin supports nearly all kinds of chat protocols

mmm... we should have a few questions bout bitlbee and irssi :)

11:51 AM
the first thing what I replaced at work was sametime ;-)

hahaha... yes
sametime sucked
at least... for the last 24 hours of its life on my pc

I don't even know what nonsense client we use here, I think it's called "spark", but our work chat supports XMPP so I didn't even try the official client

:239732 its from ignite realtime, simple XMPP client
they are known for OpenFire, java xmpp server

and a big xmpp java api, Smack
stupid xmpp foo ;-)

12:12 PM
nice map in the tavern :)

9 hours later…
9:08 PM
@micheal, how technical should answers get? :)

:240617 It doesn't ping me if you spell my name wrong :). Same on the main site, which has happened quite a few times

hehe. soz

I try to be complete when I answer, and I don't ever leave out technical details because I think they might confuse some people, I just try to explain them all as best I can

makes sense I guess
I just don't want to discourage a new user from linux...
but I know the regulars expect the technical details...

I'd hope new users are trying to learn and wouldn't be discouraged by a detailed answer, but yeah, that's a concern

9:16 PM
new users WILL eventually start to learn if they keep going...
muhahaha
but back to technical... the goal is to provide quality answers right?
so if you provide technical detail to a new user, that just wanted to know basic, your lowering the signal-to-noise ratio...

You should generally avoid writing just for the person who asked the question; you need to remember that lots of other people will (hopefully) be searching for the same problem and come across your answer as well
Obviously you should try to help the OP, but that doesn't mean you leave out details just because you don't think they wouldn't understand them

you make a good point
but since there are a lot of technical answers already.. im just gona leave it :)
there is a tag "partition", shouldn't it rather be partitioning?
@mi
@MichaelMrozek, anyway... new US user just posted a question and within a minute there was 4 answers... how is that for service :)

9:45 PM
This guy?
He's been quite active; he posted 5 questions today

yea... I saw his other questions after posting my above chat... but he's new ... :)

Right, I wasn't disagreeing, just commenting on his high question rate

I know I know... just added my indemnity clause... BEFORE anone disagrees...
*anyone

Wise :)

his two last questions are good questions thought...
however, the one might not be for Unix SE ...

A: Meaning of hard disk drive software partitions?

StefanHard drives have a built-in partition table on the MBR. Due to the structure of that table the drive is limited to four partitions. These are called primary partitions. You can have more partitions by creating virtual ( called logical ) partitions on one of the four primary partitions. There i...

9:59 PM
Yeah, I left a comment. I generally don't close things that are borderline unless they already have a few votes though

@MichaelMrozek, once Unix SE leaves beta... and we switch to higher rep requirments, will I lose my lovely privileges?
like the right to edit... which comes at 10K i think, but only 1k in beta

:240780 Yes, they all switch back to higher levels. Editing is only 2k though, so you'll probably be there by the time we launch

naah... im gona be inactive for a few weeks... exams are here... but thats my loss :)

Hey, we made the sidebar on meta:
The Unix SE is more important than your exams ;)

10:15 PM
hahahahaha... shot dude!
which meta?
i read somewhere that we can tweak the algorithm that determines what is "hot" for the front page...
do you think we could get it not to show simple typo edits... espesially if its a very old post...
otherwise we're going to end up with a too busy front-page
like SO

10:30 PM
@MichaelMrozek do you to whom do we direct 'the-workings-of-chat' enquiries?

:240844 There's a chat feedback room, if that's what you're looking for
:240819 I've not heard that we can tweak the hot algorithm, but I can look into it

In some meta I've seen someone reffering to "what should our hot algorithm be'
jeez.. look at the time... 0:30... one of those nights :) cioa

Q: What Formula Should Be Used To Determine "hot" Questions?

Jeff AtwoodRight now the front page Popular tab is fairly broken -- it's a simple descending sort by views. As Joel said in podcast #18, it is "a self-fulfilling prophecy." But this is not intentional, it's only because we haven't had time to improve it yet! As I sit down to write a better algorithm, I tho...
