6:35 AM
@michael morning sir :)
when is unix SE out of beta?

:236502 In theory sites launch after 90 days of beta; we're at 64 right now
It's not completely fixed though; cooking.SE is at 96 days

k... and is there any plans on a design? had a look at askubuntu... really jealous ;)

I haven't heard anything about it yet, I'm not sure if one is started. SOIS has a full-time designer ( Jin ) that does the site designs, but he's probably not to us yet since we've still got a month or so
Some sites have a meta post with design ideas (AU's is here ), but we didn't do one on Unix except for a post about the logo. You can start one if you have some ideas, or if you want to see if anyone else does
AU's is pretty involved since someone from Canonical worked on it as well, and Gaming is quite good; the others seem to be less radically different from the base SE style. For example, Pro Webmasters launched yesterday

6:52 AM
Cool... I think I will do so :) will be really cool to launch... even SE is fun as is...

AU's traffic went completely nuts after they launched; I'm interested to see if we'll spike much as well

If I propposed a new design are there any rules/guidelines... how much should it conform to the SO design... do you think a 'linux is sexy theme' is out-of-bounds?

I don't think things can be moved around, everything has to pretty much stay where it is. I think Gaming is the best example; it looks radically different but everything is in the same place it is on all the other sites. It's just changing the look of everything
I have no idea what a "linux is sexy" theme would look like :). Propose whatever you like though; worst case scenario it gets voted down :)

true... I think ubuntu spiked cause ubuntu has active community that got notified on launched....
*on launch

Yeah, there's was particularly extreme, but WA spiked a bit too when they launched, so I'm hoping we'll get something :)

7:05 AM
we could post forum topics at unix.com and linuxquestions.org etc?
or is that stealing traffic? ;)

I'm not very active on Linux forums, but if they're cool with that sort of thing then definitely
There are some ideas here:

Q: How should we promote the site?

Michael MrozekWe're getting to the point in the beta where we should start trying to actively promote ourselves. Most of this is not so much a question as an informational post to let people know what methods other sites have found effective, but the last couple bullets are much more open-ended and feedback/id...

I've posted a couple of the more popular questions on the linux subreddit and on twitter; I'm not sure what others have done

I guess if we pitch it right, they won't mind
yea... i've posted on my blog.. but is a shitty blog... so it won't help at all :)

I know xeno added his flair to his gentoo forums signature; I'm not sure if that did anything. I do like them though
miguel de icaza mentioned it on a couple sites, and he's quite big in the Linux community, so that helped a lot
Anyway, I'm quite a few hours behind you, so I'm going to sleep for the night. If you end up posting that design question on meta I'll feature it so it shows up in the "visit meta" box in the panel on the right side of the main site
See you tomorrow

shot dude... i got to get studying... UX is not the best thing for a student with exams :)

12 hours later…
7:19 PM
hi there

hey
good everning :)

oh, ah new face :-)

new? I'm not that new... well... maybe to chat

oh, someone within my timezone :-)
good evening
yeap, I meant the chat, nice to see someone other then michael

haha.. yes... this timezone thing gets me sometimes... where in the world are you?

7:21 PM
@sepp2k is here often too, he's just quiet

:-), germany, not that special compared to yours ;-)

what do you mean 'not that special' ?
germany is pretty cool.. i mean... u don't really have crime right? :)
you have real internet... ?

ah I don't want to complain :-) just not really exotic
yeap, we have internet ;-)

well... my friend was shot dead two weeks ago... thats about as exotic as it gets

ooh, if you ask some politicians here at the moment, we have a lot of evil cybercrime and childporn so we need a whole blocking infrastructre ;-)

7:25 PM
hahaha... cybercrime... pfft

oh, ok... no not so much shootings here...
many.. cough
you were born there?

yes... its really safe here thought, if you're street wise...
but the country I want to hack ( write programs, not to be confused with illegal stuff ) from is South Korea
or some other asian place...
now thats exotic :D
anyone here been playing with blender?

I've never went there before to be honest
I have to correct myself, some people here have real internet, I'm using the one from the neighbours here and it drops from time to time
but the chat seems to handle that pretty good :-)
no timeout, simple "reconnect", nice
I'm playing nethack right now, no but not with blender ;-)

haha... but ur not paying ( lets convert quick ) about 50 USD per month for it are you?

this whole 3D modeling and stuff is not really my thing
yeah, its 40 - 50
not now, I will move to another flat next month

7:31 PM
oh... mmm
i always thought we where really being overcharged...

doesn't make any sense to get a provider right now
thank good the connection speed has improved over the last years

how fast?

I think the average is 16 Mbit at the moment, 50 Mbit is possible

omw
yay... i can rant bout how shit our internet is again... 384 kbps
and people just don't get it when we complain bout 100MB downloads

Oh yeah, stuff is happening in here. I'm not used to watching this room
:238223 One of the chat devs is from Germany :)

7:41 PM
@MichaelMrozek mmmh, but he's not working for stackexchange? thought they are located in SF, bay area?

:238394 He is; most of the SE devs work remotely

ah ok, thats nice

thats the best way to work :)
at least for a while
talking bout work.. what do you guys do?

Software development

for who, and what kind of software development? :)

7:45 PM
software development too :-)

basf.com but we do mainly projects on the external market

wow... pretty legit stuff :)

you stefan?

mm.. bit of a jack of all trades...
web developement, student mainly, and magician :)
and soon to be blender expert

7:51 PM
I would choose the magician ;-)

Lol... if only I had the stage personality...
i actually just love entertaining myself in front of the mirror
with cards and coins dissapearing

needs a long time of practice :-)
stage personality will come :-)

its really a backup plan for when the younger generation takes over the computer world...
:)

you mean 4chan? ;-) just kidding...

no no.. 4chan is middle generation now... reddit is what im talking bout

7:55 PM
i'm not so in this whole net web 2.0 community stuff :-)
i miss the usenet and I never have really experienced that time :-)

yea.. ive heard people talk bout usenet... thats bout it

i still use it from time to time, but most if the groups I know are dead
what I like is the idea that I can decide how the content of discussions is presented to me
with a browser this would be possible, but you would have to write css hacks for every site ;-)

I really don't understand the idea of usenet.. so i can't comment :)

mmmh? its just another messaging protocol ;-)

ok...
close to xml?
or some language that can stylized with css i gather

8:08 PM
? no, more close to email :-)

:238573 No, like plain text e-mails.

think of it as open mailinglists hosted on different synchronized servers
hi sepp2k

Except not addressed to a single person, but to a newsgroup.

yep

ok...
makes sense... think i've stumbled across remnants of this before
while searching for sollutions to some obscure bug

8:11 PM
google groups is an archive of many groups

These days usenet is more widely known as "google groups"
:238585 Stop ninjaing me :p

no, I'm faster :-P
;-)

ninja's have NO honour!

who needs honour if he is invisible

pfft... samurai's are way cooler!

8:19 PM
let me search this cartoon...
I think its self explaining: nichtlustig.de/toondb/100701.html

translation?

Halloooo?! This place is taken! You must recoginze me?! Even if I'm a ninja? Keep your trousers on. oh god!

lol
actually.. this one deserves a lulz

;-)
"again I will not get tricked by your 'swalloed my car keys please help me' trick"
so, thats it, enough ;-)

no i have to contribute
:P and one last one

oh snap!
@micheal is gona send us to 4chan soon, if we keep this up :)

he can't send us if he can't see us

I don't know hey, I'm gona set fire to myself.. might work...

still no others are talking here :-)

The ninja fire picture reminded me of this:

8:43 PM
hrhr

brilliant... did you guys see the ninja?
he attacked from the closet in the background

my god, I have to close the chat window...
makes me crazy...

:238715 Yeah, a bit :). I got rid of it

thank you :)

trash heap... wonderful... chat.meta.stackexchange: discover great new features every day
;-)

8:53 PM
Chat mods can delete messages normally, but I'm not one

but you did create this channel?

Yes ( room info ); room owners can move messages like I just did, but we can't delete whatever we want

ah ok
makes sense

now.. how do we get you ( or someone else from unix se ) to be a chat mod?

:238740 All the trilogy mods are chat mods here. The Unix SE mods will be mods of chat.unix.stackexchange.com if/when we get our own

9:00 PM
:238740 does this really matter? I think after some time, it will simply depend on reputation

no it doesnt matter :) just wanted to if it could be done

Rep doesn't mean anything on chat at the moment, other than needing 20 to talk. There really aren't any spam problems (probably because of the 20 limit), so we probably don't really need one
We can always ping one if necessary though

:238749 I know, but thinking some months into the future :-)
:238753 sounds like a job for sed

im out guys
cioa

cya stefan

9:13 PM
:238778 fschmitt beat you to it
2
A: how do I add newlines between lines printed on the command line?

fschmittUse sed and replace the whole line by itself plus one extra newline character: grep foo /var/log/maillog | sed -e "s/^.*$/&1\n/"

:238798 hmpf...
I'm still waiting for a comment from him about this minor editing stuff...
ah theres one...
yeah sure... typo...

9:55 PM
so, first question posted :-)
