I haven't heard anything about it yet, I'm not sure if one is started. SOIS has a full-time designer ( Jin ) that does the site designs, but he's probably not to us yet since we've still got a month or so
Some sites have a meta post with design ideas (AU's is here ), but we didn't do one on Unix except for a post about the logo. You can start one if you have some ideas, or if you want to see if anyone else does
AU's is pretty involved since someone from Canonical worked on it as well, and Gaming is quite good; the others seem to be less radically different from the base SE style. For example, Pro Webmasters launched yesterday
If I propposed a new design are there any rules/guidelines... how much should it conform to the SO design... do you think a 'linux is sexy theme' is out-of-bounds?
I don't think things can be moved around, everything has to pretty much stay where it is. I think Gaming is the best example; it looks radically different but everything is in the same place it is on all the other sites. It's just changing the look of everything
I have no idea what a "linux is sexy" theme would look like :). Propose whatever you like though; worst case scenario it gets voted down :)
We're getting to the point in the beta where we should start trying to actively promote ourselves. Most of this is not so much a question as an informational post to let people know what methods other sites have found effective, but the last couple bullets are much more open-ended and feedback/id...
I know xeno added his flair to his gentoo forums signature; I'm not sure if that did anything. I do like them though
miguel de icaza mentioned it on a couple sites, and he's quite big in the Linux community, so that helped a lot
Anyway, I'm quite a few hours behind you, so I'm going to sleep for the night. If you end up posting that design question on meta I'll feature it so it shows up in the "visit meta" box in the panel on the right side of the main site
Rep doesn't mean anything on chat at the moment, other than needing 20 to talk. There really aren't any spam problems (probably because of the 20 limit), so we probably don't really need one
