I seem to have a spare ingress invite!

A: Why is my phone slow?

ce4Android's entropy pool might be the reason: Someone over at XDA found out that it is often empty and blocks apps. See the thread: Seeder entropy generator to provide significant lag reduction For rooted devices there's an .apk and flashable .zip available that adds a custom rngd to (sort of fa...

Nice thread over at XDA about Android's entropy pool running empty => Laggy experience
And how to fix it (rooted devices only)
12:04
Oh, @ce4 I have had ingress for a while now. But I just got another invite through email, which I have no use for ;) I am trying to find someone worthy of it!
ce4
ce4
I'm not sure, if those email invites are free to use for all or just bound to your address
@ce4 Yeah, t0mm13b already pointed that one (XDA) out a few days ago. Sounds interesting, but not sure whether it's always applyable.
ce4
ce4
12:27
@Izzy: It did some good on my N7
at least from my perception
12:48
If I'd see an issue I'd give it a try, right. But to me it's a "would be nice too have"; I'm rather concerned it could break something else when applying :) You see, I'm not the heavy flasher...
ce4
ce4
The /dev/random stuff is bogus
@ce4 Oh.
ce4
ce4
Did some research and found this (Ricardo Cerqueia is a renowned CyanogenMod maintainer)
13:19
@ce4 That was the other half keeping me from a try. So your N7 is bogus? XD

1 hour later…
14:22
Oh, man... Somebody's necro-ing old questions. Haha.
14:32
Arrrg this is bugging. I'm having a moral dilemma in an answer I'm drafting is it "a USB..." or "an USB..." I'm leaning towards the first one because it sounds right when said out loud, but the 2nd one looks right written down
Any way you could rephrase it as "the USB"? "a USB" is correct though.
after all, you don't say "an unicorn", do you?
it's "a unicorn"
@geff_chang to be honest I very rarely talk about unicorns at all! ;)
@geff_chang thanks that's the way I was veering, just needed an outside hint to push me!
/push @GAThrawn
ce4
ce4
@GAThrawn: isn't it pronounced "you-es-bee' instead of 'oohsb', so it's defintely 'a USB', right?
the a vs. an is about pronunciation only (not about readibility)
14:58
@ce4, hi, yes adbd is running
ce4
ce4
fine.
Did you try to start adb start-server as root?
(on your linux box)
@ce4 true, the pronunciation rule works fine when talking, but I always get it confused in my head by the (simpler but not always correct) consonants vs vowels when I'm writing
ce4
ce4
@GAThrawn LOL
@ce4 just tried, no luck
do you think is a matter of driver as CatShoes said?
ce4
ce4
@cYrus: what does lsusb say?
my Nexus 7 does change the usb device id from 18d1:4e41 (off) to 18d1:4e42 (adb on)
ce4
ce4
urgs, the whole device is missing
yep :/
ce4
ce4
hmm, you could test on your phone too with dmesg and logcat (b4/after you plug the cable)
do I try to reboot the device now with cable plugged?
ce4
ce4
sure, try
15:07
ok, wait
ce4
ce4
Definitely something with your firmware/device
Is it rooted?
nope
Bus 001 Device 013: ID 04e8:685e Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd GT-I9100 Phone [Galaxy S II] (USB Debugging mode)
just appeared
hi everyone my problem is very easy
my phone can shutdown when pressed power button at lockscreen
but i dont want it . how can i block it ?
ce4
ce4
@cYrus: That's really not standard behaviour. Sorry, not really sure, what can be done to "fix" this.
Another idea: What if you de/reactivate USB-Debugging? Does it work then?
already tried that, it still doesn't work
ce4
ce4
15:21
Well, looks like this can't be fixed without either upgrading the firmware (if there's one) or rooting and trying to fix it yourself
maybe the restart of adbd is broken
if you go the rooting way, try to add "ro.secure=0" to "/data/local.prop". ADB restarts with root rights then, maybe it's just a silly permission thing.
@EnesKuray: That's not possible. You can always shut it down this way. It's baked right into the firmware
@EnesKuray pretty sure most phones do that, mine definitely does, any particular reason you don't like it?
hmmm I'm not so sure that's a problem with the device itself... I'll try to investigate on the linux side for a bit
I can't root the phone since it's not mine, but thatns for the info
ce4
ce4
@cYrus: If it's not even visible to your linux box, then it looks definitely like a problem on your device (and not with you linux)
*thanks
ce4
ce4
You could temporarily root it :-) (without doing the persistence stuff, i.e. installing /system/xbin/su + Superuser.apk
15:28
yes, but "something" happens in dmesg: pastebin.com/yGDTu9RT
ce4
ce4
BTW: What happens if you boot with usb plugged in (then adb works) and then re-plug the usb?
it can't connect anymore that way
ce4
ce4
ok
but this device wasn't visible in your last pastie: idVendor=04e8, idProduct=685e
@cYrus: Here's the zergrush exploit, you could try it forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
If you don't use the script but only zergRush binary, you don't persist the root
i.e. all vanishes after reboot
cool, i'll give a try!
but wait..
ce4
ce4
just an idea as a means to add /data/local.prop containing "ro.secure"
Which only gives adb root
15:34
now works
ce4
ce4
And not to apps
??
sometimes dmesg says [21257.316043] hub 5-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1
ce4
ce4
Ah
then it won't work
ce4
ce4
do you use a usb hub?
15:35
nope
ce4
ce4
ok
trying and trying.. sometimes works
ce4
ce4
coming closer :-)
but if I boot when plugged it always works
ce4
ce4
Hold one sec...
Maybe the USB needs to settle before a successful enumeration op succeeds?
Did you try slowly pluging it in?
Reason: If you boot, the USB has maybe time to settle, if you plug, it get's instantly asked by linux
Just wondering
15:39
LOL it just needed some love... plugging it in slowly works for 3 times in a row now!
ce4
ce4
USB has 4 pins, the 2 outer ones are +/- and protrude longer than the inner 2 data pins
if you do it slowly, there's a time gap between the pwr-event and the data-connected event
Hehe, got it tracked down!!! Nice.
Compiling answer...
oh, finally you saved me a lot of time, thanks!
waiting for the answer
ce4
ce4
@cYrus done
great!
again, thanks! see you..
ce4
ce4
cu
:-)
What a funny workaround, "needed some love" sums it up right, LOL
15:58
ahahah true! you've changed my way to plug stuff in! :)
ce4

I have a bunch of hilarious jokes ready... 3..2..1
"Don't push too hard"...
just pull it off, we're having a cigarette now...
ce4

Lol
Give some time to foreplay...
Or if you want to be rude, repeat until it works
right! :P just pay attention to not broke the hole
things are getting increasingly gross...

too bad we're the only two that care about usb feelings :(

Q: Can't connect an already booted device to adb

cYrusEvery time I want to connect my phone to adb via USB I need to turn it off, plug the cable and turn it back on. Is this the right way to go or am I missing something? Documentation doesn't seem to explicitly state that. Some details: Samsung GT-B5510 Galaxy Y Pro (Android 2.3.6) Android Debu...
