May the @Flow be with you!
Too much star wars last night :)
@Izzy Is the book ready? :D
hehe :)
The new review system really rocks :)
Seems like the main reason to get the moderation tools privilege is now gone with the new review system in place
Ya! I like that, at SO, I manage to be at the top during the entire first week :D (but then it suck, users tend to abuse and just click-click-click to approve...).
Seems like most users feel like competing and don't bother to take the time to actually review or even improve the suggested edits :/
that's a typical SO problem, but here on an.sx we are about 20-30 active people
it shouldn't happen here
i wonder how they will solve this issue on stackoverflow
ce4
ce4
08:18
The review system really rocks! YAY: "All Time ce4 14"
After spotting this issue with the review system I kinda lost the "feeling" to take my morning coffee reviewing stuff :)
But now that you mention, here it should be much more pleasant to review than on SO...
08:45
You have no more close votes today; come back in 15 hours.
ce4
ce4
LOL
hmm history seems to only show the own review history
@Flow Cleaning up the house! Nice :)
09:13
@RichardBorcsik Adding vote Up/Down and edit/answer, and you've got yourself a mini version of android.stackexchange.com ;)
@RichardBorcsik I noticed that after writing the comment, lol... to lazy to edit it :D
Now that's the cool part :)
true, up-downvoting would be nice on the review site
@Zuul ~16 pages to go -- will get done tomorrow :)
@Izzy Finally!! I'll buy you a beer :D
@Zuul That means I need to check for the next vacation place in the West :D
ce4
ce4
what book, btw?
09:19
.... relocating my ass to my work desk! brb in 30
@ce4 I'm translating Andrew Hoog's "Android Forensics" to German.
My editor asked me to ;)
@RichardBorcsik Besides from being anon, I sometimes wish it would be required to give a reason for your vote. Especially some down-votes cause confusion ("What's wrong?") -- but sometimes upvotes do, too ("What the heck...?!?")
ce4
ce4
ah, right you're also from Germany! hi mate :-) (Ulm here)
@ce4 Oh, around the corner -- Munich here :)
@ce4 as you asked: Learned a lot by that translation -- many tips I give here are inspired by it. e.g. where Gmail stores it's mails. Or @RichardBorcsik that Wifi passwords are stored in plain text.
@RichardBorcsik I guess the name "Android Forensics" makes most people stop from a seceond look. I'd definitely recommend it for developers and power users.
They should at least get a "copy" to read (not a black one -- I mean, borrow it from somebody if the 50 bucks are too much)
The German version will be more up-to-date (already include the authors errata, for example) and its costs are ~EUR 35 (at least that's the current plan of the publisher)
Exactly that's the point -- and the reason why I'd like to see a note on downvotes telling me "why".
If I give an answer and receive an anonymous downvote, this doesn't help me much to improve. But if (we two had it a couple of times) the reason is given, I can learn from it -- and next time do better.
ce4
ce4
@Richard: What do you expect: If you like to have some 'auto' feature it needs to know it in plain text
The most you can have is some obfuscation or another layer (keyring), but you also need to at least once provide the master key to. PW's will be accessible until the next reboot (or if you say forget master key or so)
@Izzy: is this book available as .pdf?
or ebook?
09:41
@ce4 I do not know of any PDF or EPUB variant. Aunt Google may help (will check in a few seconds)
As for the "plain text passwords", a recommendation to the AOSP team and developers, taken from the book: When turning the device on, user could specify a password/passphrase/passcode which is then used as encryption key and stored in RAM only. So it's gone at power-down or reboot.
ce4
ce4
these are his presentation slides from mobile forensics 2009
the book is from 2011
ce4
ce4
yeah, but the slides show his direction of interest and maybe what to expect in the book
09:44
ebook is here:
"Available formats: ePub, PDF, VST "
ce4
ce4
@Izzy: I'm against that recommendation. Use full-device-encryption if you want security. Far better
What the... 50 EUR for an eBook???
ce4
ce4
It's Elsevier, man
@ce4 better wait for Franzis (I will check whether they purchased rights for electronic publishing as well)
09:46
Open source means flexibility -- why not support both? (@ce4)
ce4
ce4
unneeded clutter. Most users have 4-digit pins. They're not good for anything except user annoyance in case one forgets them
About anything else Google (@RichardBorcsik): When on the viaforensics site, check AppWatchdog.
ce4
ce4
John/whatever will crack that in milliseconds
Annnnnnnnd I'm back!
@RichardBorcsik Agree!
Sure. But why should Joh/whatever bother with cracking, when there are other devices available which are completely "open"? Hackers are also lazy -- unless they are out on competition :)
And I was shocked to see how few apps really passed the test at AppWatchdog -- not a single one in the productivity field made it!
ce4
ce4
09:50
Yes. Security done right bothers no one until there's an incident
Ooops -- @RichardBorcsik was faster :)
ce4
ce4
(@cracking 4digits: well maybe some more seconds if it's some good sort of PBKDF2)
Or wait: You mean something different. There was something with a Matt -- I just don't remember what...
ce4
ce4
Matt from Wired.com got hacked hard. Some attacker convinced apple support to reset his iCloud account pw
yep. then wiped all his iStuff (iPhone, iPad, MacBook) and posted nasty stuff on @gizmodo
Ah, yes -- now I remember the context. That book mentions this (or a similiar) case AFAIK.
ce4
ce4
09:55
It wasn't pure device insecurity, the root cause was his tree of trust with iCloud beeing the root-node. Which got hacked by social engineering
10:06
or rather go to the main page and check the catalog. There are more books. But they are in German -- so they might rather be of interest to @ce4 :-)
But if you want to check: The complete table is at the very end of the book (Ctrl-End).
ce4
ce4
:-) Thx. (although, honestly, I prefer english literature)
@ce4 If I can get it, I take both. And I write both. But I publish in German when it comes to books :)
@Zuul in a more recent study they (the "German publisher" from your comment) used the Galaxy S3. Could not yet get my fingers on that paper, just gathered a few data from an article quoting it...
@Izzy I was unable to find one :/ Actually, could not find any decent comparison between mobile telecommunications technologies.
ce4
ce4
@Izzy: just curious, you're a freelancer with translations and writing, I guess?
Does it pay off (fin.) or is it just for a hobby?
@ce4 naaaa, is a freelancer Android answers supplier :)
10:24
@Zuul LOL No, THAT certainly does not pay :)
@ce4 freelancer is correct, but mainly in Oracle databases. The book stuff came from a hobby: originally I only published free ebooks (still do), but my fans more or less forced me to check for a publisher since they wanted a paper edition :D
In my contract with the publisher, I always have a paragraph included to keep the community edition available and up-to-date.
@RichardBorcsik on Android topics -- mainly for end users.
Simply google for "AndroidPITiden", that's a unique term I brought up.
Funny thing is: in connection with anti-virus apps I invented the term "GMV" ("Gesunder Menschenverstand" => "Common Sense"), saying that being the best app. You won't guess how many people reach my server via a Google search for the "GMV app"... :D
@ce4 my latest invention: a product named VIda GE! (Vor Inbetriebnahme des Android-Geräts GEHIRN EINSCHALTEN!) :D
@RichardBorcsik Looks like :D Same for VIdA GE! ("before turning on your Android Device: SWITCH ON YOUR BRAIN!"). People were asking me for a link when I posted that on a forum -- and just afterwards noticed the explanation in its last sentence :D
11:10
@OliverSalzburg Good Morning (local time) :)
@Zuul Hey ;)
@Zuul whose "local time" -- yours? ;)
Humm... this sucks! I like it better when earth was flat :D
@RichardBorcsik unfortunately yes! :D
@RichardBorcsik Do not get confused by his avatar -- that photo was taken 30 years ago... #D
...and it shows his grand-son... (RunAndHide...)
Hm, so it must have been his great-grand-son's great-great-grand-son? Had they already photos then?
Ah -- OK, that explains...

1 hour later…
12:36
@RichardBorcsik It's one of the most stupid security faults one can find! Sometimes I lose track of what century we're in... Is it so hard to apply an encryption/decryption to a string!?!?
Not Android Related: I use some applications that don't allow you to see passwords, but guess what, export to XML and it's all there, in plain text :) lol, I have so much fun with this stuff!!!
Sure. HTCs Mail App is a good example, storing all EAS info plain text (user, pass, organization, domain info, ...). That's what one could call "Enterprise Level Insecurity" (Wow, nice acronym: ELI).
@RichardBorcsik there are plenty security-related tickets at Googles tracker for AOSP, which are regularly getting closed with "works as designed" and the like.
12:51
@Izzy Sorry, it had to be done... ;)
@Zuul What? Checking...
Yeah, but for Exchange it even stores all domain info plain-text
and they speak about "enterprise security", plus install you some device admin stuff, so you don't notice #-)
@RichardBorcsik right on!
@Zuul you're making me nervous -- what had to be done? Couldn't figure out what you mean...
@RichardBorcsik table support in answers would be really great!
He WHAT? Checking...
@RichardBorcsik lol, it was funny to see him sweat :)
13:05
@Zuul You are a... real nice guy :D
Tnx, Mr. Table :D
@RichardBorcsik I believe so...
@RichardBorcsik that was what I was checking for. But there was none.
13:17
@RichardBorcsik then upvote pls (if you don't have already):)

Q: New Review system currently in beta testing

Al EverettA new system for reviewing posts that require moderation is now live here at Android Enthusiasts. For details, please see the post on Meta Stack Overflow. It's important to note that this is not (necessarily) a tool for Community Moderators. It's a tool to help the Community moderate itself. Pl...

@Flow It got my vote! But I've read somewhere that the chat is undergoing some changes, and that this is like a temporary environment...
@RichardBorcsik lol
Hm -- is this an "unusual developer" -- or a "malware author"?

Q: Access to /data/app folder without root

XXXIs there any way to access /data/app folder? I need to download new version of my app in it. Update: I have installed say MyApp_1.apk. Now I want to update it with new version. I download MyApp_2.apk from server to /data/app. System will rewrite MyApp_1 with MyApp_2. But need access to /data/app.

hmm this question may should get closed. it's a) not possible and b) the wrong approach to update an app and then c) not an end user question
13:35
a) could go to an answer, b) as well -- and I was not sure whether simply c) already means off-topic. Tried to figure whether he's the developer looking for a method -- which would mean OT -> SO
I am not aware of one
Nope. That's the idea behind my evil comment there... To sing along: I'm bad, I'm bad...
@RichardBorcsik tnx -- just upvoted that. If they built it in, would we automatically get that as well -- or, in other words, are those updates global?
This also rather looks like a development question:

Q: Tap off raw RF data from antenna

David KI was wondering if it is possible to pull out the raw RF data from the antenna for use in an application. I have a device that operates as a separate entity with an an antenna feed, but I am interested in trying to put our processing on an Android. This would be the most useful if I could tap o...

So I understand correctly: They might start "locally" -- but given enough time, they eventually will be available on all stacks?
14:06
Where does it say it doesn't work? All references I've found so far are just "it's not wanted".
14:30
I saw that. OK, no matter why -- in short, we won't get it :(

4 hours later…
18:05
Time is good here! A coworker just filmed me sleeping at the office :D
18:46
He? What's that? When I downvote an answer, does that take a point from my reputation? Interesting...
I'd call that "instant punishment"... :-^
An answer -2, a question 0
@Zuul You've got me wrong. I just got a "-1" for this:
-1
A: Is there an Android app that scans a device for vulnerability issues?

BroamA lot of the "root" programs exploit a security hole. If you get root, you were vulnerable.

It's not my answer -- just my vote.
Hmmm, You vote -1 yes :)
You can check that here:
Hm, so why do I not get +5 on an upvote I do? #-)
Thinking about it: it's probably a safety measure, to keep people from... ya know what?
@RichardBorcsik ahhhh the first time.... :D
18:58
Nope. I just never noticed before.
@Izzy That's just to make you think twice before downvoting and not get all crazy as serial-downvote-killer :D
@Zuul that's what I meant by "ya know what" -- thinking about it makes it obvious, though the downvote-permission is not the first one gets.
@RichardBorcsik I don't like to blame people -- which is why I'm not downvoting that often. I do so when something is obviously - how to say, "not fitting". I rather like "encouraging", which I do by upvoting. Admitted, I don't vote that much at all, maybe ;)
@RichardBorcsik It's to stop serial-downvote-killer, not regular downvotes that actually make sense :) (if you downvote and lose rep, you will make sure that the downvote is well deserved... In theory at least)
Exactly.
19:23
@RichardBorcsik Down-voting can be good, if used wisely. Personally, from time to time I get a downvote, that forces me to improve the answer as to make it rock solid. The downvoter ends up removing the downvote, as to stating that it's satisfied with the result. I get happy :D

Q: Should a migrated question to another SE site, be a part of the News feed at Android-SE?

ZuulHangout at chat when this appeared: The question was migrated to Stackoverflow, but yet, it was presented at Android Enthusiasts News Feed. Is it supposed to be? I mean, why something that got off Android would be interesting to Android users? I noticed that the link still points to Androi...

19:38
@Zuul I was not unhappy/shocked, just surprised.
@RichardBorcsik agreed -- and it won't keep me from downvoting.
Actually today was the first time I thought about whether I had enough votes available. Cast about 15 close-votes. Just hope it get's noticed by enough other potential voters so it's not lost.
Was the things we discussed here recently: Questions unlikely to receive answers due to lack of input/clarification.
19:56
@RichardBorcsik I have a few votes left. Just parsing the "open questions" for the 3rd time now. Up to now, I evertime found something again which I could work on. After clearifying things yesterday with eldareratis, I'm currently casting close-votes on those questions which are very unlikely/impossible to solve (mostly when the OP just visited once to ask, never returned (to provide necessary details), and there was nothing more going on for 2+ months.
@RichardBorcsik I feel that I'm not doing enough, but tks :D
@RichardBorcsik Well, up to promote the site then! :D
It's all about the Q and the A ;)
I check with XDA from time to time. Rootzwiki I get mostly to via Google Search results.
same here!
20:13
Sounds like fun / for the big gun...
Except for the last part...
@RichardBorcsik I stop the reading process at "I got banned" :D
@Zuul that was when I had to pick something to get the juice from my table (which was supposed to go down my throat, but went the other way ;)
Here in Germany I remember thoughts about a "computer usage license" coming up some years ago...
Honestly. As a "certificate that you're not a 'DAU'" (Dümmster Anzunehmender User = Most stupid user)
@RichardBorcsik The wild wild west over there!
20:39
:D
LOL
Grmpf. There are questions with answers which won't leave the queue because the OP never returns to accept...
20:54
@Izzy At least contains answers ;)
Yeah, that's the good point. But still stick in "Unanswered questions".
Heading home! brb (in a couple of minutes)
Safe way!
And I'm back!
Well, can't up/down vote, can't vote to close... heading to the review area looking at some answers...
LOL :D You must be exhausted already...
21:09
Why? o_O
So much casting :D
Wish we could see the ones with "pending" votes, to organize a round-house-kick in Chuck-Norris-Mode...
21:26
One of the 10k+ tools -- where others casted votes on (to close)
@RichardBorcsik e.g. I see one from last year which should be closed, cast my vote -- and only a few will be able to see it. Less than 5 votes within 4 days, and my vote was forfeit...
21:48
@RichardBorcsik Hmm? Need to try what that causes. Get's on top of the activity list again I guess -- yeah, that's an idea. Tnx!
Following up on my previous comment: db.tt/4B95bMfu
@RichardBorcsik so bored today :)
@RichardBorcsik I do so -- but don't want to bomb with 15+ pieces (add the 30+ pieces from @Zuul, and you only see posts :)
And this one makes me really proud:

Q: Is there a way to update the Flash player for Google-TV on Logitech Revue?

Got it off the list just by reminding the OP -- took only ~3h
@Zuul Is that pic how you work,work,work? c00l job you've got there :)
@Izzy Could be better, but one must be happy with what it has :D
It was the middle of the afternoon, just following the doctor's advice: resting :D
@RichardBorcsik I know! And as you asked: May I quote some closure candidates?

I download MyApp_2.apk from server to /data/app. System will rewrite MyApp_1 with MyApp_2. But need access to /data/app.

The two possibilities here are 1) stupid 2) malware. 1) is OT #-)
Next: android.stackexchange.com/questions/22570/… probably won't get the required feedback (2 more votes needed to close)
Ouch... You're out, Zuul's out...
OK, let's turn that around: Do you have any such candidates I should check?
I have some votes left (~10 or so)
22:05
@Izzy This late hour and you still have votes left? What do you do with your day?
:D
You could check the list of your la... wait, maybe I can do that as well?
@Zuul work,work,work! Just 8 pages left!!
@RichardBorcsik Shit, no -- I cannot access that part of your profile (which makes sense).
@Izzy 13 last time I checked, minus those 8, you've done 5 today?!?? Hope they don't pay you much! :)
Yepp -- the translation is done by tomorrow. Then just go over the authors errata (to merge that in), then extract my notes (to send to the author to approve).
@Zuul 1) some votes kept me busy #) 2) I've got regular work as well (so the translation is after-work-work), and 3) the source code formatting in that PDF is HELL (they actually used tables for source code -- so you have to copy line by line, and eacht time remove newlines, insert spaces...)
22:11
@Izzy I would have done a script to handle that and generate a nice DOC to translate ;)
@RichardBorcsik & @Zuul at the end of your profiles page, below the votes, is a link for "more" -- there you can see the close/delete/... votes you've cast. If you've got any I should check, I have ~10 votes left for today.
@Zuul I use to do such things quite often (extracting text from PDF to reformat). Quality differs a lot. Some are simply done by a couple of regexps -- others need a week manual work...
@Izzy Why don't you use android.stackexchange.com/review or are you looking to high close-votes count?

Q: Droid Charge SCH-I510 Memory Dump Crash

chengerI am a Android developer who has been noticing horrible performance and memory dumps that are crashing my Droid Charge SCH-i510. Besides the lack of roadmap for the phone ( because obviously they are targeting newer models) I know it will never really be updated again. But I would like to see if...

the tts looks valid for me: He describes a problem ("how can I make it happen"), not explicitly asks for app recommendations.
Aehm... which one? Ah... OK, I check again...
no more gps repair :)
Yepp, got it. Just closed 2 others :)
That crazy dev (who should simply do a factory reset) needs one more vote.
What was that last one supposed to mean? Is his house running away? #D
If you read the first answer just quick and rawly, you could think he wanted kinda tracking app (and watch the track later with Google Earth)...
That guy with the SD also needs one more vote.
...and so does the image sorter -- on a second reading it gets clear OT, issuing a discussion.
needs 1 more vote.
Got ~10 off the list.
To prevent the "me toos" etc., probably including long discussions. Oh, just see the "Why": OT mainly -- see the first comment.
Except that this card was in an Android device, it's not an Android topic (but a broken SD card). I'd say "grey area".
I wasn't sure. Now that I read it again, I remember why I didn't vote to close on my last scan -- and would agree with you. As said, grey zone. Ooops: I even answered that one :)
Yeah... But I cannot revoke my vote...
22:45
Exchanging opinions happily we are? :D
@Splinky Hi there!
@Zuul hey :p
i'm new here don't care about me :)
@RichardBorcsik hey :)
@Splinky Have you undergone the initialization process?
@RichardBorcsik you picked the real complex ones -- too late for me to get a clear opinion on those :)
@Zuul What ??
But I guess this one would fall in the "app recommendation" category then: android.stackexchange.com/questions/27623/… ?
22:48
@Splinky It's easy, just mess with @Izzy on a random topic!! (help us prevent him from finishing the damn book translation) :D
ok :p
;)
@Izzy how r u ?
@Splinky Busy -- but fine so far :)
@RichardBorcsik Isn't that what the FAQ recommend -- to re-phrase it that way? #)
i'm new here , and i'm searching for some one to make with him my end of project study
22:52
@Splinky What are you studying?
computer networking
@RichardBorcsik yes
i wan't to do an android app witch can acess to system car and test if it all is working fine
i need some help from experienced people
@Splinky The best place would be stackoverflow, they deal with programming on a daily basis!
@Zuul ok
@Splinky Don't take me wrong! Here at Android we deal with end-user stuff... How to configure this, how to adjust that, how to prevent this...
how can i find student ,or some how can dowith me the job ??
@Zuul thx
@RichardBorcsik yes but i prefer some one outside my country
i don't know exactly how i will do all works or how to start ??
@RichardBorcsik i know java sure and android environment but i'm not very experienced
i need some one to surround me when i need help because in my university we don't have much
thanks for all answer and goodnight
