09:21
Anyone here?

1 hour later…
10:51
No, everybody asleep :)
You just woke me, @AmithKK
11:12
Hi Izzy...
Heya @Izzy
I don't know why but whenever I see @Izzy 's nick, my mind translates it into "Isabella"
Too much Phineas And Ferb :P
Hi @Sachin :)
@AmithKK definitly! I would know it if I was a girl :)
@SachinShekhar seems we've got a few difficult times together, huh? ;)
You are a very strict person it seems ;)
Nevertheless -- honored to meet you finally :)
@Zuul I've done it! :D
@Zuul now for the author's errata -- and the translator's annotations...
11:37
@Izzy Well done :)
Hi all!
Hi @Zuul!
Hm, did I shock Sachin to leave? Was not my intention...
11:53
@Zuul errata complete. Uploading to publisher... complete. Now for the annotations, and then I'm done :)
12:06
Review task count: 0 :-)
@Flow Working the review as well :)
I wonder what happens with the "recommend delete" markers....
Do they get mod reviewed again or is there some kind of automatism
There are some features that still count as statistics, and effectively don't produce results. Can't say for that one..
I would imagine that every click would be working for an established cap. And if the cap get reached, the delete action is triggered.. (but this is all speculation, need to see META about this one)
Seems like the delete recommendations are just flags for the moderation queue
A bit redundant moving the work load from one place to another!
12:16
Hmm maybe, well it depends on how good the flag queue for the moderators is handled e.g. if the posts that received many flags are on top etc. then it's pretty easy for the mods to take action
the silver bullet of the new review system is IMHO the close vote section
IIRC before that only people with more then 10k rep could see the close vote clusters and jump in to add an additional vote
Agree!
next step would be to delete the low quality closed questions. but that was and will be a 10k privilege and thats good so
But I hope the near future brings more automatism to stuff like "recommend to delete".
For the closed questions, there's already an automated process of deletion, without user or mod intervention :)
I am not sure if I would want to automate the deletion process
Was it closed and the question has for then 5 downvotes to get deleted? or what is it?
"close vote clusters": That was what I asked about yesterday ;)
12:22
Izzy ?
@Flow even closed questions should not be automatically deleted if they have answers, especially not with upvoted answers.
As for your question: I'm currently running the "Unanswered questions" list for the 3rd (or 4th?) time. close-voted for some old ones.
Wnated to make sure those votes are not "in vain", as nobody else might notice them (for questions not recently active).
Izzy that's my opinion too. Now is there an automated deletion criterion?
This is what happens:
20
A: What happens to unanswered questions from deleted accounts?

Jeff AtwoodI don't think it's particularly relevant whether the original asker is around or even deleted. Just FYI the following things happen automatically every week: auto-deletion of questions more than 30 days old with no answers, and -1 score or lower auto-deletion of questions more than 365 days ol...

So I asked Zuul and Richard if we'd share our recent marks to check on them.
1. auto-deletion of questions more than 30 days old with no answers, and -1 score or lower
2. auto-deletion of questions more than 365 days old with no answers, low views, <= 1 comments, and <= 0 score
12:25
Ahh I see, but with the new review system you don't need to share the recent marks
@Zuul according to what you just quoted, I should not have seen many of the questions I close-voted.
Some were from June (or earlier), no answers, no activity since.
@Flow Didn't know about that before. Still, we kicked at least 10 off the list :)
2
Q: Automatic deletion of a question

SwDevMan81Is there any automatic deletion of a question in place? I saw the I did it for the lulz question and figured this would get deleted right away, but it didn't. Seems like after about -10 its probably safe to auto-delete it if a moderator hasn't.

@Izzy Can't tell about what you've seen, I usually find questions at the "edge" of the automated process rules. So, as a good citizen, I provide that extra push :D
@Zuul exactly what we did yesterday. Ah: You've got votes available again now, right?
Izzy but had the question also <= -1 score?
12:30
@Flow not necessarily (I don't remember exactly). But the quote says (interpretation): "more than 30 days old" is one condition, the other is "-1 score or lower...365 days old".
Maybe my mis-interpretation here -- but phrasing is not 100% exact I guess ;)
35
A: Auto-deleting old, unanswered zero-score questions after a year?

Jeff AtwoodJust to formally document the exact policies we have in place to remove old abandoned / dead questions: If the question is more than 30 days old, and ... has -1 or lower score has no answers is not locked ... it will be automatically deleted. If the question is more than 365 days old, and ....

Maybe it could use an unnumbered list to make it clearer
It's more then 30 days AND -1 score or lower AND no answers AND not locked
Make parenthesis to get it clear -- or use an unnumbered list. Avoids confusion :)
"(more then 30 days AND -1 score) OR ( lower AND no answers AND not locked)" ?
Well, I'm up to eat something! This auto-delete conversation left me hungry :D
C U guys in 1h
12:34
@Zuul have a nice meal!
Izzy no need for parenthesis, it's just one big AND function
http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/140959/new-review-system-suggestion-allow-reviewing-users-to-select-by-tag
seems to be a good feature-request for SO
@Flow not a bad idea -- upvoted :)
12:55

Q: Change the primary tag for certain Google renamed services?

FlowGoogle has renamed some services in the last few months. While we have managed to add the correct tag synonyms to those services, there still appear under their old name on the posts. Here is a list of services, feel free to extend: Google Market now Google Play Store Google Places now Google+ ...

I wish the mods would eventually rename the google services tags
And I permit myself to ask: Who the heck invented such names as "play store" (ToysRUs?)...
lol
ups... I'm not here, I'm eating!
Well, I first thought, not being a native English speaker I may have missed something. But then I found that very same question on some English blog posts...
@Zuul Oh -- funny way to eat you have :)
@Izzy Prepared a nice dish and I'm seated eating and reading :)
I guess Google viewed market as a corporate thing, and Play is what we all do actually, we play with devices until they blow up and we get new ones to play with :D
13:11
Reminds me of that one comic... wait, I'll see if I can find it (how did you let your image show up in chat recently, instead of just printing its URL?)
Hm, that didn't do it...
wasn't me... was Richard, but I'll look at the source.. (leaving to the office, brb)
hmm applications tag count is up to 603
Izzy do you have a good idea for a tag name that handles topic like child-proofing, preventing the market from showing mature apps and kiosk mode?
13:35
@Flow that basically falls together with app lockers -- or should it be something separate?
kiosk-mode sounds good enough to me.
how about "lockdown" or "device-lockdown"
we already have kiosk-mode but i don't think it suits every answer
To me that would suggest the entire device being inaccessible, thus the tag being a synonym to "lockscreen" :)
app-locking ?
jail-mode ? (not to be confused with jail-break)
play-mode ? (or would you confuse that with play-mate?)
toy-mode, game-mode ?
Btw: Could anybody check whether the answer here may be up-voted (so the question can leave the "Unanswered queue")? android.stackexchange.com/questions/17887/…
Without the link, the answer doesn't solve anyone’s problem...
Right again. I didn't check the link -- but maybe the process description there is too long to make a short extract, how do we handle that?
Moreover, the link description suggests frequent changes.
Even with the link I don't see how it answers the question. Can't find the desired device on the provided link!
13:47
OK, so I'll leave that. Could you take a look here as well, please: android.stackexchange.com/questions/15236/…
OP just answered on my comment. So does this leave a "too localized"? 4 upvotes of the question suggest otherwise -- but nobody tuned in.
In fact, I don't see how can that be considered an answer! It doesn't solve any issue from the question, just points out possible tryouts...
I didn't mean the answer especially, but the question as well.
But the question can have an answer, Motorola Fire XT316 rooting is possible, one just needs to provide an answer explaining how :)
No idea how "we" could solve that issue. It's either local to the special device -- or the app(s)?
@Zuul you're still in the old question :D
Now, regarding the second link, let me read it!
13:51
I already added a second link (and gave up on the first):
No, I never found anything. I found that it's not simply a Pandora issue - the issue affects at least Play Music as well, and who knows what other apps. To be honest I've quit listening to music on my Android - I'm thinking of getting an iPod... :( — BenCole 37 mins ago
@Izzy I saw the second link, but you didn't let me finish arguing about the first one :D
Argh... comment link...
Oh -- OK, I shut up (and go for a pipe :)
@Izzy About the second one, it's hard to tell, may me a device-specific issue, but only with that device one can help! As Matthew Read♦ mentioned earlier, this questions should stay since some one with this device may come to solve the issue, thus leaving good intel for future users :)
OK -- tnx!
14:06
hello :)
perhaps jumping to wrong conclusions but... it bothers me
Hi there @t0mm13b
@t0mm13b Hm, do you think the same as I do?
heya :)
@Izzy well ... the way I see it is this, if your family member (god forbid) dies, the very last thing to do is post on a forum.... I know - I'd be knocked about...
don't take offence of it either
We've got that on a lot of forums: 1st timer asks how to bypass lock of a close friends relatives sisters whatever?
Especially not right the same day or the day after.
yeah....
it does sound dodgy....
14:15
But you can never proof.
Not the one way nor the other.
yeah... true @Izzy
I also thought at first that it's a scam, but then again I could be very valid
Hi @RichardBorcsik !
Also besides the context, it's a good valid question "How can I recovery contacts from a locked phone"
@Flow yeah.... hard to judge, "Time is of the essence"... sounds like a social engineering ploy.... but it is darn good question
14:17
@RichardBorcsik we just talked about you. Or rather we've been curious how you included that pic in the chat yesterday. Mind to tell us?
but giving upvotes for it on the day after.....
xD
@Flow sure it is -- I just finished translating a book on Android Forensics, I know many reasons (and ways ;)
@t0mm13b that's it: It really sounds like a good social engineered question. I even assumed we had already a question regarding this topic
@RichardBorcsik OK, lemme try that...
@Flow yeah...
14:18
imgs.xkcd.com/comics/compiling.png
Hm... Ouch, Firefox...
alright... have tried it with the old cat trick
its there in /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db
@RichardBorcsik not sure but i would point the questioner to the link
Ah! Thanx -- oops, and sorry :)
14:20
google is certainly able to also retrieve the contacts (if they were stored in the cloud)
@Flow doesn't help him -- "without root".
recovery - stock recovery - can that mount /system?
That's a better point: Forwarding them the death warrant -- oops, certificate and ask for xfer.
@Izzy root isnt' relevant if google hands the data from a deceased relative over to you
14:21
You cannot access below /data/data without root. With a few exceptions.
"Oh gee... he left the departure lounge... too late... oops"
@Flow Nope. And they won't do without proof -- which is why I said it's the better point.
well sms seems to work with the cat trick...
is there a time-frame for google to "verify" if evidence is handed over?
Dunno.
as in "here ya go google, death certificate..."
actually
what happens.. like say we're all in our senior years, with multiple accounts across the net
then one of us pops the clogs and arrives the departure lounge
14:24
Today one does no longer notify people directly -- one post on Twitter, another one on Facebook. Done.
what happens to those dormant accounts - just curious
"dormant" I mean
@RichardBorcsik neither am I, nor on Twotter. Nor in the cloud anyhow (except for a little google -- they got me by their "no-privacy by default")
right....
must make out a will :P
14:39
any word on that question?
He thanked and went to his mother for the certificate -- if you mean that? It's in the comments.
/me refreshes the page....
"The thing is I am not sure what his google account is since he didnt have one until two days ago when he setup the phone. He always emailed me from his Yahoo account maybe..."
Yepp, the "/me" I missed here as well :)
OK -- then it's easy: OT ?
irish more likely or nigerian
@RichardBorcsik or Nigerian. They also have that in their "billion-dollar-transfer" mails.
14:44
yep :D
and its so badly-worded in those darn pesky emails
Which brings us back to our initial suspician, huh?
s/suspician/suspicion/
had one from the "Fedral Beru of Investigaton" (sic) !!!!
Ugh... Like in "the Rock"? "I'm from the federal FBI"?
@Izzy yup... sounds like he's dodging the bullet on the google thing that Richard commented
OK, anyway: We should have that in our FAQ as OT -- for obvious reasons.
14:47
@RichardBorcsik the comment linking to the google page on what to do in event of deceased and accessing gmail
The question might be legitim -- but we can never proof.
as for the referral to the "Fedral Beru of Investigaton" - yup got that in spam!!! xD
"Chief Intelligent Officer...." like lulz!
...
nice one sir! ROFLMFAO
"middle of sex change operation, and living on a park bench"
You should be a writer
:D
@eldarerathis Since you are on. How long is the mod queue atm?
@RichardBorcsik very good creativity indeed... JK Rowling clone here... ;)
not as in gender I meant... err... I meant the natural flow of BS
LOL
:D
when creative that is
good for you! :) \o/
15:10
Something different: which new android phones have still an notification led?
and besides? HTC? the last google phone was the g1 with led, irrc. I hope the new one will have a led again
Don't think so
And IMHO LEDs are useful and cheap to include
@eldarerathis hi
@Flow: Hello. Per your earlier question - when I logged in this morning the mod queue had 9 flags
And that chat message didn't give me an inbox notification for some reason >.>
I wonder were the recommend delete actions from the new review system go then
@eldarerathis how did you notice my question then?
It gave me the notification badge when I opened the main chat page
And the recommend delete button does not put things into the mod queue as far as I am aware.
Ok, then who gets the recommendation?
"1 If you don't have enough rep to delete, you can "Recommend Deletion". This doesn't do anything right now except move it to the front of the queue for people who can delete it."
15:20
"... people who can delete it." meaning 10k or 20k users?
I think so. Anyone with 10k+ if you recommend deletion of a question and 20k+ if you recommend deletion of an answer (as well as mods) should get the posts in the front of their review queue.
IMHO the "Recommend Deletion" button seems to not be well documented/explained. It actually led me to post a feature request on MSO recently, too.
10
Q: Please add a "When should I delete answers?" section to the 20k privileges description page

eldarerathisThe privileges description for 10k rep has a pretty in-depth explanation of how deleting posts works, and it elaborates on specifically when you should consider voting to delete a question under the subsection titled "When should I delete questions?". I find this very helpful, not only for my own...

15:33
Hmm maybe recommend close only results in an flag if more user have voted for an post

3 hours later…
18:16
@Flow You there?
18:31
yes but may not for long
A slap in the wrist for the OP, but do you see it as an answer?
0
A: udp multicast with reverse tethering

FlowInstead of going the whole "multicast over reverse tethering" way, which to me, doesn't make any sense at all, you should evaluate if a VPN setup with multicast enabled (plus optionally reverse tethering) may be a solution to your problem. On a second thought: VPN + reverse tethering is basicall...

Sure from the information available that's the only solution that makes sense and is practical
And what do you mean by "a slap in the wrist"?
But should one place the necessary steps, or we just assume readers to know what to do?
Instead of going the whole "multicast over reverse tethering" way, which to me, doesn't make any sense at all, :)
Well it doesn't make sense to me and it sure was not meant offensive
And I don't have a step by step manual. That would be to substantial. Another reason why it's not a good question for stackexchange
I wrote the "VPN with multicast" first as an comment, then I realized that this is IMHO the only practical solution to the problem and then wrote it as answer
Then I casted the "too localized" close vote
@Flow Not offensive, not even close to that! Don't misinterpret my "slap in the wrist", usually a slap in the wrist is good teaching (at least from where I'm from) :)
18:40
Ahh ok, I really should by myself an english idiom book
:)
@Flow No need to justify your actions there! I'm speak about it, to learn more about "the proper answer concept". Coincidentally just happens to be an answer from you!
:D
But ok, I get that the step-by-step situation here would be over-killing!
I'll show my love! :D
Is there something like offical "proper answer conecpt" on stackexchange? That would be beneficial. Just like the legenary "How to ask questions the smart way"
18:55
@Flow I'm kinda step-by-step building my own version of "proper answer concept" by compiling what others with more experience do!
But then again there a some answer rules on which I don't agree. Like the "list answers will get out of date" one. If stackexchange wants to be a wiki too, we should allow them.
Ps: I've read that a while back... gonna read it again tonight :)
Maybe we should put up a meta post with the basic answer rules. Like, don't just point links, include as much as possible in your answer but place references to external site in there too. Make use of markup. etc.
np
I'd generally say that questions that encourage or expect a list of things are not a good idea since they become out-of-date without regular maintenance. Answers that provide a list (assuming the list answers the question) are okay IMHO. Maybe that's splitting hairs, though.
One could argue about this for hours, I've been at META observing arguments from many points of view... In general, I find it very hard to have a system up and running that pleases everyone... as long as users stick around, its because they are happy, so... :D
18:59
Sooner or later every answer will become out of date. And if you click on the "about" on every stackexchange site it will explain that sx wants to be a 1. Blog 2. Reddit/Digg 3. Wiki and 4. Forum
The wiki aspect get's to neglected by disallowing those answers. After all, an outdated answer is better then none. IMHO
As long as out-of-date doesn't mean wrong
And I know it's a principled debate, both sides have valid arguments. It's just how I would handle things
Sure, I agree with that. I do think, though, that asking a question like "What are all of HTC's devices?" creates a moving target right from the start, basically guaranteeing that the answers it receives will need upkeep to be accurate.
Whereas an answer that provides a list of options to a finite question isn't a problem. Even if it's not kept up to date it was presumably correct when it was posted, and at most it could simply be considered outdated or "incomplete" later on.
I would discourage that question, because it serves no real world problem. But a question like "Which Android devices have a notification LED?" would be ok.
Maybe I just don't get what's wrong with outdated or incomplete answers
@eldarerathis while you are here. are you able to take action on meta.android.stackexchange.com/questions/943/…
If an answer was accurate when posted, all is good! "outdated" and/or "incomplete" are casualties of time... nothing one can do about it.
Related to that Meta question: Anyone know if all devices get updated to the Play Store app? My only concern with re-tagging "market" as "play-store" is that someone may legitimately be running the old Market app
I don't know if that's possible, though, even on a really old device. It seems like it would auto-update to Play regardless
It's also probably an infinitesimally small number of people that would be in that situation, I suppose
19:15
My phone received an automatic update to Google Play, and the Market app vanished for good!
even the market:// intent is still in use
@eldarerathis I have no concrete numbers but even old android versions should by now have their marked renamed as play store
@t0mm13b serving as redirect to keep links alive :D
@Zuul: As did mine, but how old is your phone? I'm wondering if something running say 2.1 (or older!) would get the update, too
@Zuul yup! Its to keep it in "sync" and not break any existing apps! :)
have eclair 2.1 update here, but never got it updated....
19:16
@t0mm13b: I'm not as worried about that anyway, since we can create a synonym to effectively serve the same purpose as a web redirect
@eldarerathis Not that old, but I can try to get my hands on one of those to clarify this issue!
My stuff is all too new. I didn't jump on Android until the HTC Evo
oh btw hai eldarerathis :)
Which shipped with 2.2 and got an OTA to 2.3
@t0mm13b: Hi!
Then again, 2.1 and earlier is now only ~5% of the total market share...
actually must set the wifi on that galaxy 5 and see if it gets the market update
clip clop clip clop goes the samsung galaxy 5 keyboard with haptic feedback.... urggghhhh! xD
my gawd that market is sooooo old, but funnily enough, the T&C's came up as Google Play....
19:24
Interesting
well it sort of upgraded itself to the predecessor to the play ... :)
Unrelated, but relevant for any of you that are gamers: Just got an email announcing the Humble Bundle for Android 3 - humblebundle.com
is it good?
The only game in this pack I'm familiar with is Bit.Trip Beat, which is fairly entertaining as far as platformers go
:)
am not much of a gamer myself, but at my leisure, either its minecraft or quell reflect
19:30
The last bundle was killer, but not Android games. Limbo, Bastion, Amnesia, Super Meat Boy, Psychonauts, Braid
cool... must have kept you entertained :)
I'm going to start merging tags into their various "Play" variants, so if the site explodes that's why
hurray :-)
Also, if anyone wants to hit the tag wikis while I merge to add a note that says "This service previously had this other name" then you can have an easy +2 rep :P
19:36
w00t! \o/ :D
Are there some nice graphs about stackexchange sites somewhere? Like "number of questions over time"
I just tried to check the minVer required by the playstore app -- but it's not even listed in the playstore...
I think there a different .apk of the playstore with different minSdkVersion values
@Flow: The moderator analytics tool has some data for that kind of thing, though the page asks for specific numbers and graphs not to be disclosed to the public
If that has a minVer (and I suspect it has) this would answer the above question whether there might be some "old versions" around which do not get updated.
19:41
interesting... no update to google play on eclair 2.1-update! O_o
See? Maybe minver=2.2 ?
@Flow: You noted Google+ Local in your Meta question about merging the tags. Is there a separate app for that or is it just a part of the G+ app?
@eldarerathis interesting but all stackexchange data is available as dump IIRC so it makes no sense to conceal these data
I don't use it (never used Places either)
I don't know if that specific information is in the data dumps or not TBH. I've never looked for it.
While checking my extracted Nandroid, I just got a different shock: Though I never ever used Dropbox, there are a lot of dropbox related files stored (event history) =:-0
19:42
Google Local is just the new name for google places
but it's a extra google service that just happens to have a good g+ integration
Okay, I'll keep a separate tag for it, then
/data/system/dropbox/event_data*.txt ... wrrr... -- OK, I shut up and go vote-close again :)
So Market -> Play Store, Music -> Play Music, Books -> Play Books and Places -> G+ Local
Missing anything?
Video. That changed too, I guess...
right
Hm, no questions with that tag, though.
I'm also going to do Google Docs -> Google Drive
Unless anyone thinks that's a bad idea

19:46
Hi folks
@ce4 hi there!
ce4
ce4
@t0mm13b: thanks for spotting the x68 typo
hi @Zuul
@ce4 np :D
ce4
ce4
How are our mods? I guess they have double/triple work since the new review beta feature, right?
@eldarerathis Google Docs directs to Google Drive, so, sounds good!
19:48
@eldarerathis Video => Google Play Movies & TV
ce4
ce4
@t0mm13b: del'ed my comment, btw.
@ce4 awwww.... :(
xD
ce4
ce4
ah, comments are for OPs, not our have-fun-area
:-) that's here!
now that finally here's some hanging-around :-)
@ce4: Actually, the new review tools have reduced some work because more questions are picking up 5 close votes without a mod having to be involved
just saw this interesting invisible bicycle helmets video :) Fair play to the two women that sussed it out... here
ce4
ce4
19:50
Ah, fine! Not sure it's good for SO however (@eldarerathis)
raised 10$M in VC as result! :)
The review queues on SO are just...disheartening. Something like 59k questions with pending close votes
@t0mm13b I remember there were more "invisible xxx" stuff around...
@Izzy well... when you see the video, then you'll see it! not triple x rated :P
ce4
ce4
@t0mm13b: what did raise 10M?
ah, the video, I guess... Sry.
19:52
@ce4 no biggie :) alls good... :)
@t0mm13b Nice concept :) (the one from the video)
@Zuul yeah... interesting concept .... fair play to them!
could see a good few games coming out of that at leisure
practice head-butting :D
or bounce of the wall
@t0mm13b Oi! That was not a "fun video" -- but it was fun to watch -- I'm impressed! How was that: "My keyboard has an airbag for the head-crash"?
Cool stuff!
19:56
@Izzy it will save us programmers from getting key letters imprinted on our foreheads during one of those facepalm moments :D
ce4
ce4
LOL
heeh
ce4
ce4
ah, those face palm moments...
Had to do a rollback just today :-( not funny. hangover now... worked 16hrs towards it yesterday...
Reminds me of a joke on our northern sea people ("Eastern Frisia"). Jug-ears and a flat head. Why? "What's that noise?" -- "Ah, the sea..."
yeah... happens so often until my foreheads gets flat as a result with qwerty imprinted on it... and maybe a <key>A</key> <key>S</key> <key>D</key>....
there I go
/me facepalms!
oh ce4... rollback
icky
19:59
As long as you don't get the Win-Keys imprinted... #-)
sorry to hear you had a crappy time
ce4
ce4
yep, but not my fault :-)
@Izzy... winkeys... hmmm.... could stick that on the invisible helmet :P
ce4
