I had missed taking some assignments from the Prof whose course i tried to drop

I had missed class where he handed them back, I was working on wrapping some end of the semester work up

I asked if I could take the assignments back (I should have let them be) and he exploded on me

About how I was challanging his authority because I missed an in class talk by a lecturer

It was hard to argue with him, it was like he just wanted to pull any excuse to accuse me of literally anything

I did another project with someone and he accused me of cheating on my portion

He asked how I did it and I showed him

I even gave my interpretation of the results

It was a wild fucking ride, I told him he can have my laptop if he wants he can have my whole workspace, my workspace was my own, it was strange he kept putting these false accusations into the fray

He also said he'll take off points that the TA has ever given me, he refused my requests for extra work for extra credit but then just said, 'do your best'. I did my best and kept my grades as high as possible but I dont know what is displeasing him

Today's meeting was just him throwing accusations which I explained completely then he accused my partner of being incompetent

After finding out that he couldn't find anything wrong he then moved on to my partner and said, 'this guy's portion doesn't work'

I dont know what to do

He just wants to fuck me over, but can't come out and say it

I don't know what he wants

I did as he asked, I don't know what pissed him off

My career is being taken away by his ego, our final presentation is tomorrow and I don't know what will happen

I wont brag, but ever since the previous incident, I've made sure to do well on all class projects

and homeworks, which I dont think he was expecting me to do

He just wants to take offense, which he'll take and then he'll blame me for it

Okay, so right now there's a question about how to get more women to respond to ads, and the top-voted/accepted answer's based on that urban legend about how women apply only if they're 100% qualified while men average at about 60%.

And like other recent replications of this myth, they cite an HBR article that actually refutes the claim, "Why Women Don’t Apply for Jobs Unless They’re 100% Qualified".

How does something like this get fixed?

Just to note it - I get that the article's title sounds like it supports the claim. That's probably what confuses folks, but the article's actually a (rather diplomatic) debunking.

@Nat That article does not investigate the claim that women are less likely to apply for jobs where do not meet all the requirements. It just investigates gender-specific motivations for not applying to a job (when you do not meet all requirements).

@Ponponhollamon No, I am lacking too many details and background (and trying to describe them probably won’t help either). I recommend that you go your student union or an ~~independent~~ counsellor for students in your programme (if such a thing exists).

No I mean I dont understand who you mean by counselor, I cannot fathom an equivalent person in my department (I cannot understand the role, perhaps you can describe what the day to day activies of such a person are)

You need somebody who is willing to listen to your entire story and capable of understanding it and putting it into context (which requires knowledge of the general culture and workings of your programme and institution) and at the same time take action or recommend ways of action.

In my country, most programmes have a professor who is dedicated to give advice to students of the programme. Also, there are mediators and counsellors on the university level.

No I have an issue with one person not the whole dept

If I talk to the wrong person it would mean like I'm talking to everyone in the dept, which would be bad because the person who has a problem with me will now have a more of a problem with me. That's what I meant

@Ponponhollamon Then talk to that person before you tell them anything and ask them to what extend they can or even must keep confidential what you are about to share. At least I would consider it a serious breach of trust if they shared anything without your consent. You can still decide whether you trust their answer then.

Or go to the student union, if you do not trust the professors.

@Wrzlprmft As the article explains at its intro, their reason for doing the survey was because they were skeptical of original claim. They didn't directly test the exact same thing, though even if one denies their mode of evaluating the original claim on the basis that it wasn't direct, it's at least certainly not an article that supports the original claim.

@Ponponhollamon I don’t know how your department and students are organised, but usually there is a organisation of students of a programme that exists to represent students and consult them. This should be more than one person. So If you do not trust that one person, consult with another member.

@Nat As I read it, they are skeptical of “It’s usually invoked as evidence that women need more confidence.” They are not skeptical of the statistics, just their interpretation.

Guess I got my wires crossed. A while back, there was a discussion about this topic, citing that HBR article and "How McKinsey's Story Became Sheryl Sandberg's Statistic - and Why It Didn't Deserve To" (going from memory). The Huffington Post blog entry explored where the original statistic came from and how it became popularized.

The statistics gathered up in the HBR article suggest inconsistency with the premise based on the 100/60 claim, but the HBR article's author doesn't seem to provide them for that purpose.

Let us consider academia.stackexchange.com/questions/100907/…, which has been put on hold as too broad. I doubt that this question would get any good answer as of now for the following reasons: there have been zero answers so far, and the question might be too specialized already now.

The expertise here at stackexchange might be simply missing. There are not so many users who have served on search committees in CS in the US who would recollect their experiences about applications of the particular group mentioned.

I could make it less broad, but I really think that it would be reclassified as "too narrow" in such a case.

@D.Hutchinson I have determined not to try industry since leaving a position in the research center of applied sciences, where I found I am really not so interested in applied sciences. The fundamental physics is still my favorite. I think if I really go into any industrical orgnization, I must irritate some people because I am that kind of people who are not good at politics nor am I interested in it.

actually I don't really mind irritating those snobbish people, but my hatred toward that kind of environment would make me want to resign.

@D.Hutchinson When I was pursuing my MSc, I used little money I got from my advisor's research budget and stipend from teaching assistant to live and pay tuition. I think I am not good at multitasking so that I can't study and have a gainful vocation at the same time. Fortunately my university is in a suburb where basic living cost is very low and it provided me a cheap and decent dorm.

During the stay in that university, I found the suburb, rather than the big city my hometown, is my milieu. When I just moved back this hometown, I felt it intolerably suffocating and need to go back to my alma mater every a short period to enjoy the pastoral air. But now I have been mired here for long. I really hope to depart from it soon.

I found living in this city is a great ennui.

There is just nothing to explore in this big city because wherever you go, all you can see are shops and buildings. When I was in the suburb where my alma mater is located, I could find a marvelous place, like a lake, a jungle, a field, from time to time when I took advanture.

some people think livinig in this big city is convenient in its transportation system which seems reachable to everywhere, but I don't really feel it appeals to me; I feel the metropolis lacks the mystery I like. I used to be a teaching assistant in a university where the mountaneous roads are everyhwere; I like that kind of place more because there are something to explore in that kind of place.
