@RajorshiKoyal They're not modal verbs though, are they? I'm sure some crazy linguist somewhere has argued for that anyway. They're just historical relics AFAIK.
@RajorshiKoyal Another case where you need to be clear whether you would a linguistic treatise on it (which no chat participant here can provide) or whether you want to learn how to use them, whether for exam purposes or if you want to genuinely learn.
And since it's probably the latter, you're not going to find any sort of useful framework for that. Don't wrap your head around why are they used the way they are, just take it to heart
