[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Few unique characters in answer, mostly punctuation marks in answer, blacklisted user (193): What does the phrase "absurdly" mean in this contextual setting? by RoboVgina on ell.SE
00:18
@AIQ I didn't know about this one. Racism, white arrogance, self-righteousness are everywhere.
This person is a lawyer? I hope he has been disbarred since.
00:48
Seems like the racist lawyer in that video wasn't disbarred after all. A grievance letter was sent to him though
> “We are sending this grievance to say that you cannot engage in xenophobia, bigotry, hate and get away with it. Such behavior should never be tolerated,” Mr. Espaillat said on Thursday.
It just never ceases to amaze me how these people can still say they are not racist after all that bigotry and insults they hurled at people
They are always like, "oh that is not me. I am not that person. I love diversity."
No doubt in my mind he still considers himself a model patriot and would never have apologized if this thing hadn't gone viral, if we hadn't seen a blowout.

@EddieKal Yeah that is why we need a male equivalent of Karen.
Very apropos of your question
The problem with Karens is that they always come out after the fact and say they didn't do anything wrong. They are quick to assume the victim position. They are never in the wrong. They always assert their rightfulness, even after being confronted. And they don't even realize they are being such Karens while at it.
The one in San Francisco happened just yesterday
I really can't believe that white lady could still come out and say "I was just trying to be a good neighbor. What's wrong with that?"
What's really telling is that they don't apologize for their arrogance, their assertiveness, their self-righteousness. But that is where they got so sure of themselves and make no bones about lacing into a total stranger, ready tear that person apart (figuratively speaking)
That one really hit close to home for me.
SF, of all places!

Yeah innocent card
or the good neighbour
of the gated community
@EddieKal Omg the apology ...
the audacity to say he loves immigrants
jesus
I don't understand these people. How could they be so sure of themselves when they decide to go ahead and implicitly accuse or attack another person? And they never forget their winning smiles at home. Gotta always bring your white smiles. "Oh I am just asking some questions. You are over-reacting!" "Respectfully I am just telling you this is not the right way to do it" Oh yes a white lady just has to lecture a black person how to do it
One thing I really admire that SF black guy for is how quick he realized he was getting Karened
and how to deal with being Karened properly
See I just verbed Karen
At least Canada has a real leader

@EddieKal oh no no no no, far from one, but in general does the right things
He is not? Oh okay. You apparently know him and his reputation better than I do.

yes, well, he actually did well during this pandemic
@EddieKal For some reason, the trevor videos are not accessible in Canada from YouTube
I mean it says "The uploader has not made this video available in your country."
@AIQ Oh apparently Comedy Central restricts regions. Didn't know they also do that on YouTube. That is unfortunate.
Here is a recap of what happened: youtube.com/watch?v=6VHCLX-J2_8
without Trevor Noah's silver tongue though
Btw, Trevor actually talks about the names black people give angry white ladies. "BBQ Betty" "Cornerstore Caroline"
Let me try and see if I can find you that clip from another source. It's definitely worth watching and related to your question

Etymology of the day: The word carboy is from the Persian qarābah (قرابه), from Middle Persian Karāvah.[4] Arabic also borrowed it as qarrāba, meaning "big jug".

@CowperKettle Whoa, I'm not sure we have this word today

Word of the hour: to agist - to take cattle to graze for money

@M.A.R. I googled for the word in the brackets, and sure enough, large bottles came up in Google

Q: Can a pronoun represent a noun first appearing in a relative clause or first appearing as an object?

vincentlinI have a question about the use of pronouns. Can a pronoun represent a noun first appearing in a relative clause? Can a pronoun represent a noun first appearing as an object (like the object of a verb or preposition, etc)? Or a pronoun can always represent a noun wherever the noun first appear...

15:24
@CowperKettle No I mean in Persian, I've never heard of it
Unsurprising, considering a reputable Persian dictionary says it's for brewing beer
15:35
Ah!
I bought a bottle of vodka today for RUB 120, for disinfection.
It's impossible to buy pure alcohol, sadly
Because it would be made into vodka by drinkers.
Pure alcohol would be a better disinfectant against COVID

@CowperKettle That's why they make denatured alcohol, just so people won't drink it.
16:59
The thing that sets carboys apart is that they are large, and have a small opening.
They are typical in brewing, but I guess these water jugs are also technically carboys...
@CowperKettle I dunno. IIRC a study said as long as a minimum concentration requirement is met, they'd be as efficient
@ColleenV So, volumetric flask
Sort of
Jugs are similar, but have handles...
Some people call what I would call a "pitcher" a "jug":
@M.A.R. flasks have a longer neck
Unless they're for liquor, then they're made to fit in a coat pocket.
@ColleenV Larger flasks, especially when they're a part of some specialized setup, can have short necks
@CowperKettle As long as it is at least 60%, it works fine. Anything over that isn't really necessary.
@M.A.R. I didn't know that
We have some 99% and 91% because my husband uses it for cleaning prints from his 3D printer
or curing them or something, I'm not really clear on why he has to wash them in IPA
(isopropyl, not India Pale Ale)

@ColleenV International Phonetics Alphabet
@ColleenV wash what?
The prints from our 3D printer
so far we've done a benchmarking print and a floating table
@ColleenV Actually I think a study argued a concentration of 15 percent or similar suffices
toy thingy
Maybe it was a question on Skeptics about this very issue
@ColleenV I have no idea what those are made of but big long molecules such as polymers are often water-insoluble
It may be to smooth out the printing lines
the little ridges because of the nozzle size

Q: Was the celebration of the Gotthard tunnel a satanic ritual?

DilbertIt is claimed that the ceremony at the completion of the Gotthard Base Tunnel was a satanic ritual. Is this true? youtube video (short) youtube video (long)

Lol, I find this very silly
I'm bit ignorant about what distinguishes Satanism from other 'forms' of atheism but it sounds really childish to go for Satanism because he's the being religious texts hate
Or is it just another snarky non sequitur like choosing "Jedi" for religion?
Satanism isn't atheism is it? It believes in a god right?
I dunno, that would make it hmm, probably sillier
A glance at the Wikipedia entry says it's some sort of atheism
I think there are flavors of it, just like there are with Christian sects
Regardless of whether either entities exist, it's what worshiping them entails than the acts themselves that matters
I can dance around frantically and say I'm worshiping Freddy Kreuger for all the good it does
So, say the tunnel was celebrated by the so-proclaimed Satanist ritual. What does this even mean?
I think "satanic ritual" is just a made up thing used to try to rile people up, like saying playing a record backwards reveals satanic messages.

Q: Corona Lockdown Efficiency

TomSeveral countries who came through the Corona Pandemic well (so far, at least) and have removed their lockdown restrictions are now discussing whether or not those lockdowns were needed at all. I've been following Worldometer and other sites on the statistics and it does seem clear to me that al...

Oh the US did marvelously
And so did Sweden
But getting to causation is pretty darn difficult
18:17
I feel like the initial lockdown was critical, but the extended lockdown did more harm than good in some regions. High density regions like NoVA or NYC definitely needed to stay locked down, but there are some parts of Western VA that had zero hospitalizations for COVID. Restricting travel into or out of high risk areas and common sense restrictions (like limiting density indoors, protecting the vulnerable) might have been enough.
I don't know if we have any way to know for certain though
Probably for the best to err on the "no exponentially rising infection rate" side of things
@ColleenV It was never exponential in a single region. That complicates things
Just saw this on Twitter. California, not the whole U.S.
Graph made by a UC Davis data scientist/mathematician with data from JHU
18:42
They're being contradictory on that
Some claim asymptomatic "hidden zombie crowd" exactly fits the data and others claim it exactly fits not
18:56
The problem with that is "new cases" does not mean "deaths". We've got increased testing now, I expect many more cases to be detected. Hospitalizations are down in many areas. And we still have many square miles where there hasn't been a single COVID hospitalization or death.
That doesn't mean that I have no compassion for the people in areas where COVID is a real life-threatening risk
but I don't think regions that the lockdown "saved" from lots of cases have to be as cautious
especially now that it seems that asymptomatic transmission isn't the risk we thought it was.
