> In an attempt to draw on his popularity, Charles Lindbergh was invited to fly the Flivver. He later described the Flivver as "one of the worst aircraft he ever flew".
Word of the day: flivver - a small cheap usually old automobile

hunger is a persistent trouble
it reccurs soon again after staving off it
there is no such a machine easily available which can be employed to deal with it
there is no animal which can be trained to cook
actually making food doesn't require much education
it's just a toil

the bridge between material and intellectual is money.
only material workers can sell.
only material can actually be sold.
intellectuals can only be paid by grant.

@CaptainBohemian The sad truth is that many research articles are crap, and many professors do not bother teaching their students properly, because they are promoted mostly on the basis of research and not teaching.

Major-General Sir William Erskine, 2nd Baronet (30 March 1770 – 1813) was an officer in the British Army, served as a member of Parliament, and achieved important commands in the Napoleonic Wars under the Duke of Wellington, but ended his service in insanity and suicide. He was the eldest son of Lieutenant-General Sir William Erskine, 1st Baronet and his second wife, Frances. He succeeded to the baronetcy on his father's death in 1795. == Early career == Erskine was commissioned into the 23rd foot 1785, and transferred to the 5th Dragoons as a lieutenant in 1787, and in 1791 became captain...

The Persian Cossack Brigade or Iranian Cossack Brigade (Persian: بریگاد قزاق‎, translit. Berīgād-e qazzāq) was a Cossack-style cavalry unit formed in 1879 in Persia (modern Iran). It was modelled after the Caucasian Cossack regiments of the Imperial Russian Army. Until 1920, it was commanded by Russian officers, while its rank and file were composed of ethnic Caucasians and later on Persians as well. During much of the Brigade's history it was the most functional and effective military unit of the Qajar Dynasty. Acting on occasion as kingmakers, this force played a pivotal role in modern Iranian...

@Jasper I think most research articles have contribution, but you may not be able to find it due to lack of prerequisites. And I don't really care whether professors are good at teaching because I think we can always self-study given the books or lecture notes. Most of my graduate school professors are not good at teaching because they are busy in research, but I think that's a problem.
I think only research needs guidance. Teaching of lecture kind can always be self-studied.
@CaptainBohemian Students pay a lot of money for tuition fees, and I think they deserve better quality teaching. Without tuition fees, the university would not even have money to run any program.
@Jasper but I find the way to self-study due to poor teaching skill of teachers.
In high school, my English teacher was very poor at teaching, so I find a way to self-study English.
@CaptainBohemian I study everything myself too, but I am just talking about the responsibility lecturers have, that's all. =)
I don't really care how professors teach. I only care if they direct research well.
because it's really difficult for a research student to begin research without good direction.
@CaptainBohemian For many people, they can't even do research properly because they did not even learn the basics in their courses properly.
15:52
because I didn't really know what kind of topic counts as a research topic and whether a topic is really workable. without good guidance, it's difficult to work out a research result.
In that case, you just need someone to point out the research direction to you, and also point out what relevant papers or books you may need to read to do that research.
only good professors would do that.
my ex-advisor didn't really give that kind of guidance.
Have you finished your PhD?
he said I should find the topic on my own and find the books suitable for me on my own.
but I had never done research, so how did I know what kind of topic counts as research topic?
So you are still working on your PhD now?
15:57
no
i have not found a position.
Position as a PhD student?
I hope you find a good place soon.
not all professors can provide that kind of position.
Know roughly what topics you are interested in, and then look for universities and professors who do a lot of work in those topics.
15:59
have done a lot of that kind of work.
Then apply to those universities and also email those professors telling them your intention to work there with them.
What I lack now are peers to discuss.
Just start somewhere, doesn't need to be perfect, and you will get there.
There is no perfect university or professor for any topic.
most professors have no position to offer if you email.
Just keep trying.
16:01
have trying many.
not overwhelmingly many.
because it takes time to check research.
Also, you can always apply to a place that does lots of topics.
Then you can narrow down your selection later on.
Just get there first and start.
but if there are peers to discuss, that's really helpful.
no
applying directly to research groups directly.
You might be able to discuss with some people in various chat rooms on SE.
have tried.
For example, in the physics chat if you are doing physics.
16:04
but difficult to find suitable people.
Then just make do with what little info you have.
people there most chitchat these days.
I will tell you another thing you can do.
only occasionally there are really experts there discussing physics.
Look at the various graduate programs in the different universities, see which suits you the most.
16:05
all you say are what I have known.
Look at the various professors in that university, their webpages, see what they are interested in.
if you can tell me a good place listing positions of specific fields of my interest, that's best.
Nobody goes into a graduate program with full certainty.
Wisdom comes from the Blue Square.
Like I said, look at the websites of different departments and different professors.
16:07
if you don't really understand my need.
I have known all those.
I think that's all I might be able to share with you. Good luck then.
all those are all I have known and done.
I need discuss the detail.
If your topic of interest is very narrow, consider changing the topic.
Usually people end up doing a few related topics, not just one.
Everything is connected anyway, the different branches of physics, or mathematics, etc.
are you a physicist?
i don't really focus on a specific topic.
I search for interesting topics.
I am only a banana.
However, I love mathematics.
But because of my illness, I have not applied to any graduate program yet.
But if you ask me about math programs or math topics or math books, I may be able to tell you a thing or two.
Anyway, good luck. I hope you find proper food, proper housing, and a position as a PhD student soon.
16:18
If you study math without a position, you can't get credit unless you can make publication.

17:39
@Jasper Do you work on some math problems for your pleasure?
I studied for an exam, and it was interesting sometime to solve problems in math.
@CowperKettle Nope, I am just trying to get well, though that may never happen.
I ended up asking a dozen of questions on Math SE, but they are very simple.
@Jasper Depression and anxiety?
@CowperKettle Yes, my OCD etc is at its very worst now.
I'm afraid to go off escitalopram, it helped me amazingly quickly.
Did you try any additives? I take Zn.
20 mg/day
And Omega-3, a couple of capsules from iHerb
I have been off meds for a few months. I will decide soon if I want to go back to taking meds.
I am still not sure if they really work for me.
A lot of things is trial and error.
17:42
My brother has epilepsy with partial seizures and auras, without classical seizures, so to be safe I also tried a course of his drug, an anti-convulsant
I brought it to the highest dose, and felt nothing, so I dropped it.
@Jasper Did you try to investigate your thyroid, your sugar levels, and your vitamins?
A lot of things might slightly affect mental condition.
@CowperKettle I think the right word is dose, not doze.
Ah
It was Carbamazepine, I brought it slowly to 1200/day, and then decreased it back.
@CowperKettle Thanks for telling me, maybe I should go for a physical checkup. My mental illness is very complicated, I would need a whole book to explain to you how I became this way.
@Jasper I felt bad for a number of years, and it turned out I had low-grade diabetes, and tiny doses of insulin provided quite a boost.
@CowperKettle Maybe I will email you one day to tell you more about what happened to me...
17:45
@Jasper Okay!
By the way, may I ask how things are between you and that girl?
I read psychiatric news now and then. MedScape psychiatry, etc. It's very intersting.
I remember you told me she was interested in you. =)
@Jasper It's over. It's complicated. I'm not good at maintaining relationships.
Hmm, that is very sad. I hope you find some other girl soon.
17:47
Yes, she cooked a nice dish for me, and I gave her a present, and we talked. And watched movies.
@Jasper Thank you for your wish!
I'll go and translate some.

Word of the day: hidebound
2
Etymology (given by the ODE): mid 16th century (as a noun denoting a malnourished condition of cattle): from hide (animal skin) + bound. The earliest sense of the adjective (referring to cattle) was extended to emaciated human beings, and then applied figuratively in the sense ‘narrow in outlook’.
So the skin can't be stretched and similarly, figuratively, hidebound people can't stretch or change their views.
