I came across the expression "chew the fat" and it's horrible.
Yucky.
I imagine a person chewing a piece of animal fat. Ugly, disgusting.
I wonder how such expressions come to be adopted. We have some in Russian too, probably. I don't know.

I guess when I read the sentence at issue a lot of times it doesn't make much sense to put the that-clause after the verb, but when I go back and just read it normally, the sentence doesn't sound that badly constructed as the answerer makes it out to be. I don't know if I'm paranoid due to some discussions I've had recently, lol, but their advice sounds like something straight out of a usage manual.
Maybe the original is colloquial, but the suggested sentence strikes me as stilted at best.
