Of-course-there's-a-word-for-it of the day: epalpebrate – having no eyebrows.
I can't find it in any respectable online dictionary, lol.
The OED only says "1884 in Syd. Soc. Lex.", and it doesn't say it's obsolete or anything.
pal·pe·brate (pal'pĕ-brāt),
1. Having eyelids.
2. To wink.
[L. palpebra, eyelid]
Farlex Partner Medical Dictionary © Farlex 2012
@userr2684291 Of course it isn't obsolete. I just heard it today
10:56
@V.V. Who would've thought that prepending "e" would change the meaning rather significantly.
in- sounds even more insignificant and it's a professional antonymizer
[f. e- prefix3 + L. palpebra eyelid + -ate2.] – the etymology given by the OED.
Now I wanna meet a guy named Anthony Miser
I suspect "f." stands for "from", and "L." for "Latin". The numbers are in superscript.
@userr2684291 Or 'formation'?
10:59
Could be, @M.A.R..
@M.A.R. Yeah, "formed on".
Hmm
Same difference.
But how they got from "eyelids" to "eyebrows" will remain a mystery.

Q: toilet invigilator or toilet keeper

Min ThuIn our country, during an exam hour there is an invigilator whose duty is to stand guard outside the toilet. He makes the invigilation of cheating and records the list of students who use toilet during the exam time. How should we call this teacher, toilet invigilator or toilet keeper?

Word of the day: invigilator

Good morning :-)
Anonymous
I have a new pet snail.
Anonymous
He was trying to cross a five-lane road, and I didn't think he was going to make it across safely, so I had to rescue him. In fact, I think he was only thirty seconds away from getting squished.
Anonymous
After I picked him up, a car sped through right on that very spot.
Weren't you afraid to run onto the road?
Anonymous
So I carried him back and gave him a home, and I named him Daredevil.
15:40
(0:
Anonymous
It was a little bit tricky picking him up, because I couldn't just stand in the street.
Anonymous
So what I did is, I tore off a leaf from a nearby plant, and then I put it in front of him and poked him with it a little, so he'd panic and speed up.
Anonymous
Then I stepped back to the sidewalk to watch for cars, and waited for him to climb onto the leaf. Once he was on it, I picked the leaf up :-)
Anonymous
It takes some time to pick up a snail safely, because their grip on the ground may be so strong that you can't pick them up without hurting them.
Anonymous
15:43
So that's why I used a leaf.
Anonymous
Anyway, Daredevil is safe now :-) And eating carrot.

I never knew that they cling to the ground so strongly

@CowperKettle Snails crawl via something called "adhesive locomotion". In other words, they use a sort of glue to crawl across things.
Anonymous
15:46
And they create little ripples in their foot which stick them to things.
Anonymous
And propel them forward.
Anonymous
They use a fluid which has the properties of both a glue and a lubricant.
What's the trail made of?
Anonymous
It's a special kind of mucus.
15:48
contrail, muctrail
Interesting...
16:06
@snailplane Can't you make them somehow get into their shell completely, then pick them up?
16:23
Do you say that a snail has a house, like I do in my first language?
By house I meant shell. Apparently there already exists such a thing called a snail house in English, and it refers to a structure in which snails are kept.
Anonymous
@userr2684291 They can stick to the ground while they're in their shell.
There is such a phrase as "snail house"?
So there is a "turtle house" too?
Thanks for the link @userr2684291
I would just use the word "shell" for both a snail and a turtle.
16:54
@skullpetrol Thanks.
You are so happy to have green leaves in mid-March

@Man_From_India I'm doing okay. I'm getting ready for some upcoming medical things, so there'll be times when I'm busy and times when I'm just a little bit out of it but I can participate on the site :-)

Things are going well. I'm trying to gain a little weight before my oral surgery that's coming up.
17:50
Oral surgery?

Yes, my jaw is kind of messed up. It's okay, though :-)
Hope not cosmetic!
Anonymous
Oh, no.
Anonymous
It's not like that. I just need to be able to use my teeth properly. My bite isn't right.
17:51
This is the first time I heard something like this.
Hope the surgery is fast and painless. Good luck.

@snailplane we get very little time to meet, long distance now.
Anonymous
17:56
Oh, I see.
@snailplane What do you hope to gain from that? :> (Srsly.)
en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/srsly Hm, "srsly" is in a dictionary. "Origin: Late 18th century: abbreviation (first recorded in a manual on shorthand)."
Anonymous
@userr2684291 Well, I'm almost certainly going to lose weight after the oral surgery because I won't be able to eat very well for a while.
@snailplane Ah. Right. Haha, that was a silly question.

1 hour later…
19:08
@snailplane Aww... I hope things will go well, and you'll recover quickly. If you get bored because you don't feel like to eat, come to the chat room. :-)
Lots of love and support in here.
@Man_From_India Congratulations!
Hi All! Long time no see!
Hi!
And welcome back!
Hi Dem, snail. User2691
Thanks
I would like to put my view on foriegn employement.Well, Thanks for your question. I would think going to forign country for employment is basically for earning money. There are many reasons for why people go for foriegn employment, such as: due to the lack of employment opportunities in our own nation, low amount of salary in existing jobs and mimicing others in our surroundings as they are all going foriegn countris for employment just foe earning money.
Please correct my writing if I have mistaken
I'm sorry. I'm gonna pass.
Ha ha
Why
19:23
A sentence or two might be okay. But for something this long, it takes time.
And there are too many points to discuss.
As @snailplane usually says, it's mentally taxing.
It was a piece of my writing
I know, which makes the correction even more open-ended.
Oh...
(compared to those "designed" tests)
I have just written it.
19:25
It's not that bad, though.
Really!
You seem to be better at conveying your ideas across, which is a good sign.
Where would you think mistakes really are? Main
Lots
Which is why I'd like to pass.
Oh...I would appreciate if you could help me to find ....
Okey. What about Number 4 sentence?
19:30
There are too many for me, which would be a bad thing for me if I started.
@yubraj Which one? Please quote it again.
In: There are many reasons.....
There are many reasons for why ...
That's one error.
There are many reasons for why people....
Maybe it's not a real error, but I think it's less idiomatic than just the simple reason why.
There are many reasons for why people go for foriegn employment, such as: due to the lack of employment opportunities in our own nation, low amount of salary in existing jobs and mimicing others in our surroundings as they are all going foriegn countris for employment just for earning money.
You mean "for" isn't necessary
19:34
You started it with there are many reasons, due to is unnecessary.
Yes, for shouldn't be there.
Before why
low amount of salary is unidiomatic.
See, there are too many things to discuss.
I'm sorry. I think I have to pass, like I said.
What would be the right phrase for low amount of salary?
19:36
But! Your overall message is quite clear, so that's the upside.
I'd simply say low salary.
Okey...
Then again, you use salary before jobs.
Thanks a lot @DamkerngT.
Would salaries be better? Or should we go with low-paying jobs instead?
See, too many choices to decide.
Well...And what about "mimicking others"?
19:39
I think this part is somewhat unclear.
But I guess you wanted to mean something like so people follow what others do and go to work abroad or something similar.
That's a basic version, in plain English.
Yes! You got me. I'm delighted for being helped.
Yeah....
Being personal....How were you spending your days till today? Are you okey?
What do you mean, my days till today?
I'm okay, generally, FWIW. :-)
19:58
Yes! Days
Okey. It's 1:44 Am here, I need to sleep again.
Sleep well!
I woke up in the mid night
See you again. Bye for now. Good night
(^_^) Good night!
20:42
Hmm... when military doesn't mean military, and wiretapping doesn't mean wiretapping...
I wonder what's next.
English is very hard.
Nah, it's super easy except when it's hard
@DamkerngT. LOL are they even serious?!
American politics has degraded into a joke now.
Looks like they are.
I laughed at the joke called POTUS but this is getting ridiculous
So, what else is going on in the world except Trump @Dam? I haven't been following the news lately
Me either. I just started reviewing the news.
Oh, BTW, lots of news on Nintendo Switch.
21:08
@DamkerngT. Hmm, it seems like the industry is going Pokemon Go's direction
Stuff that work on-the-go
Switch can work on the go as well, I think.
Yeah
It seems to be a new fancy thing to be travel-friendly
It looks like there are a couple of trends emerging this year.
2017 seems like a better year than 2016 in my mind image
And it could be funnier! :P
21:11
2016 was soooo shitty (┛◉Д◉)┛彡┻━┻
@DamkerngT. How come?
Oh
I forgot that guy for a minute
Well, American politics will work like this for the next 3 or so years:
POTUS screws up on Twitter -> People furious -> People make jokes about Trump's hair -> Sean Spicer makes it worse -> People get tired of making fun of the claim -> Everyone moving on
And play their Switches. :P
21:15
So yeah, a month felt like two years already
Hey, at least Ahmedinejad isn't the headlines now
We have America to laugh at
I never really hated the guy, and don't really understand why some people hate him with a passion
It's true that his oversights destroyed the economy and made us even look more radical though
But hey, it's not like you can blame the president for everything
nods -- I think you're right.
Now my mind replaced the word 'president' with 'POTUS', automatically
Damn slender Thais
I wonder how much of the obesity rate in the US can be blamed on Trump
And how much on burgers
(^_^)
I think Bangkokians are probably heavier than people from the rest of Thailand.
21:45
@Dam have you had such clients in your job?
Everyone will sooner or later run into such clients. :-)
> Client: Can we change the heading font to more acrylic?
Me: Sorry?
Client: Can we change it to more of an acrylic style font? You know, like slantways.
Me: Oh, you mean italic?
Client: No, I think its acrylic, please don’t correct me again. The slanty-‘i’ in word, you know. For acrylic.
This one particularly fits our chat room. :-)
22:01
@DamkerngT. How so? Because of the 'don't correct me' part?
Because it's about words. :D
And language, of course.
It's acrylic. Don't correct me again please.
22:24

A: Is 'that' optional after linking verb?

TRomano"The worst thing is" is already a fairly informal utterance, and you will find many examples of The worst thing is, you... and The worst thing is, they... If you're concerned about striking a formal tone, the worst thing you could do is use the phrase the worst thing is, with or without that.

Good point
though I'm not sure if the OP is concerned about formality.
But it's a good point anyway.

Q: When one makes something out to be a bigger deal than it really is

A-friendLets suppose someone is exaggerating the magnitude of a problem. For example: they face an accident on the way home and start to fabricating some stories about the event that never has happened. The audience possibly would perceive these are all made up by the speaker to making a more scenic view...

> But it has to be a problem. Stretching the truth about how bad a traffic jam was is just exaggeration.
Totally agree. I don't think big deal or blow it out of proportion really fits the OP's idea of "exaggeration".
(And what's wrong with exaggerate when it's "exaggerate"?)
