Q: A 20k question that could have a canonical answer

Mari-Lou AThe question was only posted 8 months ago, but in that short space of time it has attracted over 20,000 views. "Has" vs. "have" The title must be spot on for visitors looking for an answer. It is simplicity itself, and maybe the question should have been closed for lack of research, but it's ...

06:45
Hi
@DamkerngT.
what is different between "How did he even know we were here?" and "How did he know we were here?"
What is the "even" role in first sentence
I did some research about this
I cant find any explanation
Could you help me to understand it
@Man_From_India I've downloaded this book drive.google.com/file/d/0B2FIjclucW7zNGM5S2V3VFhEbG8/…
Is this the book you recommend me ?
@yubrajsharma Yes I just checked it ;-)
yes that's the book.
Umm. ....Thanks
07:33
Thanks . . . Umm
@AliRızaAdıyahşi The presence of 'even' indicates that the speaker is surprised that 'he knows we're here'
The expectation was that 'he' wouldn't be able to find them.

Q: Is cardinality a well defined function?

DirkbossI was wondering if the cardinality of a set is a well defined function, more specifically, does it have a well defined domain and range? One would say you could assign a number to every finite set, and a cardinality for an infinite set. So the range would be clear, the set of cardinal numbers. B...

@Cardinal are you well-defined?
08:34
@M.A.R.
Yes?
Thank you, I understant
Welcome
08:50
@M.A.R.

In your answer there is words "wouldn't be able to". After your answer, I did research about "wouldn't be able to", and I found some discussions about "couldn't" .

why use "wouldn't be able to" instead of "couldn't"?
Sorry, I ask a lot of questions :)
@AliRızaAdıyahşi 'couldn't' is fit as well.
Just because one structure is grammatical, doesn't mean another won't be.
Though, if I use 'couldn't', the 'be able to' would be superfluous.
Yes I know it. I actually ask difference between

"he wouldn't be able to find them."
and
"he couldn't find them."
two of them are the same?
Yes.
ok, thank you
Don't mention it
09:20
@M.A.R. None of the answers mention "got" for instances, which allows the following question forms; e.g. "Have you got a job?" and "Has s/he got a job?" Compared to "Do you have a job?" and "Does he have a job?" where the main verb have is not conjugated. — Mari-Lou A 33 secs ago
Well, what does that have to do with 'have' vs. 'has'?
How is he going to use "could" and "would be able"? There should be some context.
"would "is habitual
Or what?
Hi,@CowperKettle
@V.V. He wanted to replace 'could' in my chat message

@yubrajsharma I can see that you're struggling. It might be better if you review previous chapters in your textbook, though, especially the passive voice and participles.

Q: Would the phrase, "in my area," be a non-restrictive clause?

TimWould "in my area" be a non-restrictive clause in the sentence, "These are the only two parks I know, in my area"?

Strange question!
Hi! Let me finish this essay and I'll get back here... hopefully soon.

Huh? Vine is no more on Twitter?
@Man_From_India I'm still not sure why the OP asks his questions.

@CowperKettle
word of the night: proselytize
@DamkerngT. I think we should leave a comment that we treat it not the way OP is thinking, rather in a different way. And then close that question.
@Cardinal wow, almost 2000 words!
16:53
@Man_From_India Probably. I'm not sure what the best action would be.
To my surprise, there are more (results of) proselytize than evangelize in COCA.
@CowperKettle YaY! ^_^
@DamkerngT. nods

Hello @DamkerngT. Thanks for the support, however I believe that it is important to consider the background that you need to have to get a high score in the academic version, this version was designed for students wishing to enter an undergraduate or postgraduate study programmes, on the other hand the general version was designed for people who have work experience or immigration purposes, due to this fact there is a huge difference between them, you have to have a stronger cultural background for the academic version, I believe that this is enough to suppose a very huge difference. — neo33 1 hour ago
I don't disagree with you about the difference. My point was that neither is not necessarily more difficult than the other. It's the same language anyway. You just need to be more familiar with lexical bundles in academic prose to do well in the Academic one, and that's all, IMHO. — Damkerng T. 1 hour ago
@DamkerngT, Well yes it the same language in the sense of that you use" English" for both however is like to compare a Research paper with a letter to communicate something to your boss. — neo33 4 mins ago
Once someone believes something, it's hard to change their mind.
@DamkerngT. You can say that again
IKR
In the same vein, some scholars can't get themselves understood very well in a normal setting. These scholars are only good at their own "lexical bundles".

@DamkerngT. Testing again
Hey, @DamkerngT. Can you help me with some doubts?
He can help you with some questions.
There are no such things as 'doubts'.
@M.A.R. nice
If you say so
18:38
@M.A.R. and others can help you, too, BTW. :-)
I can? I was about to go AFK and do some studying.
Oh well, it can wait
What's the question, BTW?
"this document talks about" and "this document speaks about". One of these are wrong?
Nope
Both are grammatical
nods -- Neither is a good choice in formal writing, though.
18:44
That.
@DamkerngT. And how can I say it in formal writing?
Either are about ... or discuss ...
Alright, I'm not needed. BBL, studying
@M.A.R. Aww...
I'm multitasking as well.

No problem :-)
Do you think "Most of relaxing techniques are about [...]" is good?
I like Most relaxing techniques are about ... better.
19:06
You may have noticed that the boss of the Mont de Piété here is a little shy on conventional good looks. Why "on"? It means he isn't handsome, but I never met "shy" on.
@V.V. Not sure. Maybe it's just how the author speaks (or spoke).
19:32
Thanks, Dam, I just went to search and suddenly found. Am,E.to be shy of(also on).
A-ha!
I'm more familiar with shy of.

Q: Is the passive form of the word "theme" correct in this sentence?

Alžbeta ČelesováRecently we were given the task to promote the upcomong conference at our university, so I wrote the twitter post: "getting excited for this year´s conference themed Terrorism" Is it gramatically correct?

I think excited about this year's thematic conference on terrorism is probably better.
Between this year's conference themed terrorism and this year's conference themed on terrorism, I think I like the latter better.
