So, @Dam, what else is new today?
in The Periodic Table, 5 mins ago, by Mithoron
Maybe, but it's not peptide gel but glucomannan/acemannan gel http://www.researchgate.net/publication/48347118_Aloe_vera_their_chemicals_compo‌sition_and_applications_A_review

Thanks!
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Hmm... nothing much around here, I think.

@DamkerngT. BTW Maulik wrote an answer to TRE meta post and pointed out everything except what he should've.

Some of our users will have a harder time finding questions they like, though.
Then again, I understand both sides of the arguments.

9:23 PM
I wonder if I would pass the test if something similar to IELTS in Thai existed.
Look at some tips students and teachers wrote:

- Use complex sentences in addition to simple ones

I think that is the work of an examiner, so you do not overdo and not do less than you are asked for!!
Educators wrote:
> [T]his feedback is given in the manner of an IELTS examiner. However, I think that it's not true that it 'punishes every single mistake you do.' Neil gave the letter a lot of positive praise, for example, that the letter addresses the task, is well organised, and uses complex sentences. In general, IELTS examiners concentrate on the positive examples of language when marking,.
However, if we want to learn how to be better and achieve a higher score, it's important to look at what could be improved.

@DamkerngT. I have a book named "Ace The IELTS Speaking Test"; the guy has written the examples of a script in the speaking test as if @Stoney is rehearsing Hamlet with prof. Smith back in 1810.

Alrighty, here's the book. Opens a random page

Ah, I got a reply (from an Educator):
> Hi Damkerng, I agree that this particular task does feel quite artificial. In reality, most people would just send a quick whatsapp or something similar to a close friend in this type of situation. However, this is the format of the exam at the moment and if it helps you, you can imagine that it is not a physical letter, but instead an email that you are writing. You have to think of it as opportunity to show off your English.
> Just remember, the examiner cannot give you any points if you don´t provide the material. So try to impress the examiner with informal expressions and other appropriate language usage.

Completely subjective.

(My points were about the test was unrealistic, and the examiner appears to dislike short sentences.)

> EXAMINER: Are animal rights preserved in your country?
> EXAMINEE: We have never been pioneers or standard-bearers in such progressive causes as animal rights preservation. In actuality, there is no organization directing genuine supporters of animal right activists; henceforth, even the cruellest acts against animals whether in public or in laboratories never incur the wrath of anybody . . .
And that was one of the most comprehensible parts.

Hah!

9:33 PM
"In actuality" seriously, why not "actually"?

HENCEFORTH?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M "You have to think of it as opportunity to show off your English"

"incur the wrath of anybody" Unless I'm a masochist, I'd say "bother anyone".

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Oh, the task was "a letter to a friend about moving house".
I think in other tasks, the examiner may expect something similar to your example!

Q: When should we hold The Retagging Event?

inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.MWe're going to hold a chat event (Similar to TCE) to retag almost all of the grammar questions. Are you going to help? What day of the week and at what time are you willing to help us? Personally I'd go with Friday, since it's the weekend here and the last weekday there (Friday evenings are famo...

Hello, @VictorBazarov! Welcome to the room!

Hello! First time, no kicking, please.

@VictorBazarov Hullo @Victor! Welcome!

Okay, I won't. :-)

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That makes me think of Humpty Dumpty in Puss in Boots.
@tchrist We have a Unicode character for that?! :D

@DamkerngT. His face looked a bit mature. I dunno, that reminds me of those kids in Shaolin.
@DamkerngT. I can't think of anything that we don't have a Unicode char for.
@TCh gimme whale.
BTW, @Victor tell us a bit about yourself. :)

9:45 PM
What would you like to know?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Victor is a notable answerer on ELL. end-of-data

Anything. Anything that you'd like to share.
@DamkerngT. That's not big data.

<shrug>I don't remember how I stumbled upon ELL, but saw it as an opportunity to learn by trying to answer. Old Usenet school, you know.

Indeed. Oh, BTW, sorry for calling you by your first name. The chat room makes me see only your first name. @VictorBazarov

It's my name, why would I mind, right?

@Victor @Victor @Victor @Victor -- Ooh that feels good.

Don't overdo it, though.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Well, normally I'd have to wait for him telling me to do so first. :D

9:48 PM
@VictorBazarov Here's something that goes nice with that: ಠ_ಠ

BTW, are there keyb shortcuts for that?

@VictorBazarov Dunno, I use porkchat.
Lemme find a link.

Hello, @StoneyB!

Found it!

(or whatever part-of-day it is where you are)

Ah.. Chrome. I'm on IE.. @StoneyB: yes, evening in about 7 minutes. EDT.

@VictorBazarov Get started with chat: You can edit your chat messages for two minutes.
You can delete them too.

Right. It's easy to say "you can edit", it's harder to decide how or when to delete. :-)

9:54 PM
And the Owner of this establishment can move them somewhere else, which is disconcerting.

@VictorBazarov Are you using desktop/laptop?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M 🐋🐳🐬

@StoneyB No it isn't.

Russian saying, "word is like a sparrow, after it flies out you can't catch it"

You can delete your own messages within only two minutes as well.

9:54 PM
@VictorBazarov Well, you can catch it here.

But it leaves a mark behind.

I see whales and a dolphin!

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M : desktop. Does it show? (looks around himself)

@VictorBazarov Then SE chat is heavenly for you right now. Just hover over a message with the cursor, and then click on the down arrow to the left.

9:56 PM
@StoneyB Yes, but they can't delete them, so you can follow them if you wish.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I see that. Thanks!

@tchrist It's sort of like finding yourself as the Work Under Consideration being deconstructed and intertextualized.

@VictorBazarov OK, chat intro, level 2: @Dam is a robot, @TCh is something worse than a robot, @Stoney is a guy from the past millennia, I'm a chemical, @Snail is a snail vehicle, @Jim is the judge in Judge and Jury, @Copper is a Russian bike biker, and we're yet to see a normal human here.

LOL

And @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M is a Persian Boy.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M : it's not important what we all are, it's important why we're here (eeck!)

I am here because today's questions are so depressing.

@StoneyB it comes it goes, don't it?

I'm here because my hands hurt and today was exhausting IRL.

10:02 PM
@StoneyB May running the delete queue bring you some relief.

@StoneyB A Tork.
@tchrist +1 for the reminder.

Mostly they come and echo each other.

I was here to find out more secrets about liquefaction and aloe vera.

shrug whaddya gonna do?

Let's delete some of the troll's questions.

10:03 PM
Now trying to find out what "gorra light 'ave yer" means...

@VictorBazarov review -> tools -> delete

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I don't think I can cast any more delete votes on those.

@DamkerngT. I beg your pardon, have you a light?

@tchrist Watch and burn.

Yeah, I need to learn some tools, that's true...

10:04 PM
@StoneyB Um, how about . . . no?

@VictorBazarov Here.

@VictorBazarov Victor honestly, SE's stuff is one of the hardest things in the universe to try and learn. There is this Meta Stack Exchange which is supposed to be the Q/A wiki of the stuff you need to know about SE and its features, but finding something fun to read among the funny punny comments is next to improbable.
But questions tagged with FAQ are good to read for a start.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M, yeah I don't think I'm up for that... Too old, you know...
Seems like all those good things deserve multiple lifetimes.
...and we don't got one even, it seems sometimes.

No need to test the water, just jump in! :P

Feet first, though: it's shallow.

Good advice indeed! :D

my philosophy - learn as you go.

10:10 PM
@Victor you may find engaging in meta discussions in [meta.ELL] useful.

who reads the manuals anyway? @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M: I am sure they are. but who got the time?

Y DAT DIDN'T ONEBOX (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
@VictorBazarov They're only useful if you're going to actually do something with the site.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M See, that's another secret of SE. :D

They're not needed for answering only.

[ell.meta] <-- doesn't work; never mind that

10:13 PM
luckily all those things can be done by degrees, as little as one day a month...

@DamkerngT. It only does that in comments. And flip a table.

Oh! jimsug came to the rescue!

@VictorBazarov Yes, but since I want to know what I'm holding in my hands, I read them all. And you can ask me anything you want about it. ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ :) O:)

Thanks!

The mysteries of namespace.

That's how it works in comments, too, except [main] only works on meta, and vice versa.

@jimsug Whadidyoudo?

He showed you.

10:15 PM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M You need practice with your eye dialect: Whaddidjudu?

Whadidjado?

Hmm.
@jimsug "jado" means "magic" in Persian.

Didgeridoo

Didjaridoo?

10:16 PM
No, MAR did.

off to make some tea; 'll be back in about 10 minutes or so

All looks like cock-a-doodle-doo.

BTW @Victor markdown works in chat, like the main site, in a limited way. italic bold slanted bold ALL-CAPS (that isn't markdown :P)

I noticed (nods)
OK, All, thanks! Enough for one night... Need to head home from work. Tootles!

Someday a linguist with nothing better to do is going to write a monograph on SE dialectal variation.

You're only partially active here?

I guess so.

10:21 PM
I suppose we should be grateful to chem for making it possible to get a word in edgewise.

I don't even have an ELL tab open right now.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M - Do you know why Sublimate might have been so much more popular mid-century? Was there some field of research into sublimation that was just opening up? — Adam 1 hour ago

@VictorBazarov o/

Pop Freudianism

10:28 PM
First thoughts: Sublimation was being studied back then by the scientific community, but liquefaction is a pretty recent name.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M It peaks at the beginning of the 20th century, not the middle; and most of those hits are medical uses of "corrosive sublimate", an old name for mercury bichloride, used as a topical antiseptic.

@StoneyB I think you should comment and answer Adam for that cause.

@Dam did you suddenly get popular?

The room, perhaps. :D
Welcome to the room, @DJMcMayhem!

It's 2:05 here, and I don't feel like sleeping.

Actually, my tea isn't ready yet.
Speaking of which, the water is ready! Be back in a few minutes.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Which awesome word? --dang?

10:39 PM
@StoneyB Haha that goes without saying. But no, I meant "grandeur".

Not very common these days. Used mostly in connection with a) Rome and b) delusions.
It's pretty well naturalized by now, anyway. Use grandezza instead -- much more sophisticated.

I'll remember that.

> Con motivo de la abdicación del Rey Juan Carlos I y la subida al Trono de su hijo el Rey Felipe VI, la Diputación de la Grandeza de España, como único órgano oficial de representación de los Grandes de España y Títulos del Reino, quiere dar la bienvenida al nuevo Rey.

I'm going to sleep, finally!
Night guys.

Spanish works, too.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Night, MAR. Me, too: I have to go buy my wife bookcases.

10:53 PM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Nighty night!
Good night, @StoneyB!

Hello @everyone

Hello! I'm on and off the room; sorry about the delay.
Is this your first time in a chat room on SE? @DJMcMayhem

11:21 PM
No, I've been on SE chat rooms before. @DamkerngT.

I see. I should've noticed @everyone anyway. Silly me. :-)
