jrgWhat media (music and video) players are there? Please list one piece of software per answer, as per this meta post.

A: What Media Players Are there?

user18027(Apparently Linux is not an officially supported port of Songbird anymore. You can still get untested nightly build from here, but YMMV)

We should post a Nightingale answer or edit this ---^

@RolandTaylor so
whats up?
and how can I help?
jrg
jrg
oh and where is the food?
What I'm doing is looking for answers that are out dated (for example, the VLC and Beatbox answers were outdated majorly), and updating them. Also, answers that are woefully anemic I'm adding some life to. ...as for the food...
:P
I ate it all :'S
jrg
jrg
That sucks.
Ok, I'll just start with my ruby tag. :P
Oh yes, I should add tags to the description.
jrg
jrg
well fancy. :D

jrg
jrg
what tag to start with?
@jrg you're welcome
As you said, your ruby tag :P
I am going to hunt down some paltry tags now.
jrg
jrg
we should make a rule
17:55
I remember editing that tag in the past, but it hasn't left me - we should have a ms-windows tag, and a "windows" tag for application windows.
jrg
jrg
no IF THEN OR stuff in tags
Should I go to meta?
@jrg example?
Yes, you should make a meta post (I'm about to make one about the windows tag).
jrg
jrg
Refers either to Microsoft's Windows operating system(s), or application windows.
Oh I see!
Good point
Tags should be rather specific, and not blanket statements.
There will be fringe cases of course, but that should not be one of them.
jrg
jrg
Indeed.
18:04
I'll ask the second question - do we need a tag for "windows"?
jrg
jrg
Ok
If we do, we should restrict its usage (IMHO).
Most questions tagged with Windows will likely end up being WM related, or bugs.

Welcome @OctavianDamiean

I think this really is on-topic in regulators, but I'm too lazy to do that right now.

Q: What is the proper usage of the windows tag?

moberleyI noticed this question today. The question is apparently about workspaces, but is a bit unclear on that. In any case, it used the "windows" tag with a different meaning than the other questions using that tag. All the other questions so tagged refer to the operating system but the question in ...

@RolandTaylor
So how do you plan to do that? We pick a question and work on the update together?
jrg
jrg
To do updating stuff?
jrg
jrg
i think we pick a tag (at least, thats what roland made it sound like)
jrg
jrg

believe it or not, i'm just sitting here, trolling meta, not running this show. :P
@jrg oh nice
back
I was busy writing a now discarded question :P

@OctavianDamiean belated welcome to our humble command center for global domination... and similar matters :)

A: What is the proper usage of the windows tag?

GillesUse windows for all issues related to interoperability with Microsoft Windows. (That's what we do on Unix & Linux, where the problematic is the same.) I don't think it's a good idea to have a completely different meaning for the same tag. I recommend window-NOUN tags, such as window-manageme...

I prefer that ^

A: What is the proper usage of the windows tag?

flutefluteLet's blacklist the windows tag (prevent anyone from using it) because it's too ambiguous. Instead: Use window-management for the 'GUI object' (instead of windows and window) Use the already heavily used windows-xp, vista and windows-7 and don't let anyone tag with the generic "windows"

Anyways - time to find another tag/question/answer.
We pick questions and tags that need to be updated to modern standards (like for example, the first question I started with had some woefully outdated answers, some answers had practically no information, etc).

Then, we bombard them with updates until they submit willingly (or not) to our sovereign will - which is to have reasonably up-to-date content :).
Also, what @jrg said is a good method for finding such offenders and ridding them from our Kingdom. (Find a tag, look for outdated questions/answers - edit, edit, edit - or post a new answer.)

Sounds good.
Window-management tag - ready for a good description.
I'm currently hunting "windows" questions that need retagging/editing.

On it.
A window manager is system software that controls the placement and appearance of windows within a windowing system in a graphical user interface. Common window managers in Ubuntu include compiz, unity, metacity and openbox
that work?
We have a window manager tag, so we would need more of a verbal description.
jrg
jrg
i see
Like "window management is the process of throwing ponies over tall fences"

jrg
jrg
what kind of questions are in window management? Do we even need one? goes looking

@jrg improve the tag description so I can approve it again ;)

Hey, its better than the nothing we had. ;)
jrg
jrg
oh SWEET. I'm half way to the Research Assistant badge.
Oh nice!
@jrg I found one within minutes of searching the tag
jrg
jrg
@RolandTaylor i see.
I'm finding sometimes users confuse what deserves the windows tag :S
@jrg good job on the tag :)!
@BrunoPereira @OctavianDamiean shall I make you room owners?
18:55
Sure, why not.
room topic changed to Ask Ubuntu updaters: We update outdated questions/answers as well maintain existing ones. (We also tackle tags, and any thing else that moves). (Currently we are fixing the questions tagged with , and using the tag where needed. (no tags)
Here something that might help. If you don't want to see closed questions in the list then use this query.
It basically is just this search query: [tag] closed:0
Oh thanks a million!
Ubiquity tag - needs a good description (free rep for someone) :D
jrg
jrg
19:11
done, it was a competition as to how many times I could say "installer"
Approved :D
confused :) are you guys fixing only tags or answering there question?
jrg
jrg
Fixing tags, updating answers in tags.
ohh i thought answering unanswered questions
@Achu you can do that too, but it's not the focus. Our focus is explained in two messages (gonna grab em shortly).

Don't forget check the Ubuntu Regulators room as well.
@Achu so you can answer if that fixes the problem :)
and what he said :D
Look there for questions that misbehaved and need to be disciplined.
Ok, that is cool i will try
jrg

Oops, didn't know how tags worked in these rooms.

20:13
@OctavianDamiean lol wth
Also, not every question can be retagged to but some should be tagged as for example.
@RolandTaylor That is Trogdor!

Q: I made us some Trogdor graphics!

iglvzxWe seem to have a tradition of using the Homestar Runner character 'Trogdor the Burninator' to request tag deletion. I thought we could use crisper images, so I made my own. >:)
