[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] ShearOfDoom pushed commit 8c432b66 to master: Moved license and changelog to separate information folder
15:17
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] ShearOfDoom pushed commit 4face073 to master: Changed path for license.
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] ShearOfDoom pushed commit f91bdc66 to master: Deleted license, as it has been moved to subfolder "Information"
Morning @AnnonomusPenguin
@EthanBierlein Oh, I have a lot to do
Hi!
@AnnonomusPenguin Oh, btw, I've moved the LICENSE.txt file, and a new changelog.txt file into a subfolder named Information. Just for organization.
@EthanBierlein those are almost always in the root of the project
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] Annonomus-Penguin pushed commit 52af9ebc to master: Rename test.py to examples/test.py
15:26
Eh, It bothered me. Stuff has to be organized or it can drive me a little crazy. Besides, we don't want the main directory to be cluttered up with files.
Hmm. Will test.py still work, even where it is?
Lemme test.
@EthanBierlein oh... right.
How about this. We just put all our example files in the source folder, prefix the filename with EXAMPLE_filename.py, and just change the .gitignore?
@EthanBierlein why change the gitignore
15:29
Idk. Do we want to keep the tests visible?
What do you mean?
The .gitignore matches patterns, which in turns tells github which files not to show.
I think
That's what it does.
I know that
But why would we change it?
So that the test files don't show on github.
Ahg, forget it. We can keep the test files.
So: quick question. How will we handle different versions of docs?
15:36
Have "folders" for docs, e.g, we'd have a folder named v0.1.x-alpha-docs for version v0.1.x-alpha.
So will we be working on live pages when we update the docs (for a not yet released version)?
But then, wouldn't it link to the latest docs?
The pattern for this isn't working out.
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] ShearOfDoom pushed commit f06e2d45 to master: Remove that awkward sounding sentence,
Hmm. How about this for the docs. We'll just have one page for documentation, and a header at the top which links to the separate parts for each version. Once a new version is released, we start writing the docs for it.
15:45
@EthanBierlein we need docs when a version is released
Hmmm
Okay, then right before a version is release, development stops, docs are written, version is released, development continues.
Also: how do changes carry on from version to version? If there's an error, we don't wnat to update docs from ten years ago
@EthanBierlein you can't stop development on an open source project
Okay, how about this: We test examples in docs before they are pushed out, to help reduce risk of errors.
What I'm asking is this: do we really need backward docs?
Bootstrap doesn't
So... Only have docs for the current version?
15:52
Let me think about this
I think we should at least have an archive of docs for previous versions somewhere.
Ok, I think I know how to do this. Let me handle this here
I'm not going to archive tutorials, though. That's too much work.
We don't need to archive tutorials. We don't really need them anyways, with docs and all.
16:19
@AnnonomusPenguin Is your event handling system affected by lower_text?
@EthanBierlein eh, kinda
What do you mean?
Like, for example, if I had a MapPosition with the name Hello There, could I type "map_position.hello there.enter.after": exit, and have it still work?
@EthanBierlein uuhh... I don't quite remember.
We need to use the _conditional_lower() function more. There are a few places that I saw that needed it.
Mostly my fault. I have an open issue for this.
k. I'll let you figure that out. I'm adding another test game right now.
What are the test games for?
They seem like examples
Are you having an issue with that?
16:26
Hmm. Yeah. Let me try something else.
Okay, yeah. I'm going to open an issue about this. Brb.
Assign me to it
> *(This assumes that `lower_text` has been enabled)*

Suppose I have a `MapPosition` instance with the name `"My Position"`. If I try to assign a function to it using an event handler, and it's actual, capitalized name, it doesn't work. Here's an example.

"map_position.My Position.enter.after": func # <-- This doesn't work.

In order to get this to work, I have to type the following instead.

"map_position.my position.enter.after": func # <-- This works, but it's still a bug.
Alrighty, I added the issue.
What license do we want the docs? Same as main?
16:35
Yeah
@AnnonomusPenguin @EthanBierlein I don't think it is a hash collision.
@SimonAndréForsberg I know
I think you just managed to create two branches that are completely unrelated to each other
2
I was just saying that would be really cool

> A higher probability exists that every member of your programming team will be attacked and killed by wolves in unrelated incidents on the same night.
Still love that ^^
16:37
I know :P
@AnnonomusPenguin I'm going to commit another test game rn. Am I go for launch?
@EthanBierlein what is the purpose of a test game?
Why shouldn't we just build unit tests?
(But yea, commit)
I had an issue a while ago where someone I worked on the same repository on used the wrong URL for pushing changes, ended up with two repositories being 'merged'... that was a bit of a mess to clean up, but we managed to solve it.
So that we actually have "game" of sorts, rather than our current left/right choice test.
16:39
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] ShearOfDoom pushed commit 3db4663f to master: Added a 'test game' of sorts
Ok, for the site, I'm going to add a page about our team. Send me a small snippet about you for me to add (GH push team only), 1x SE flair, email, Twitter, anything else
2
A small paragraph and a links/etc.
And any SE flair
Sorta like an "about me"?
@EthanBierlein yes. Keep it short
Full markdown supported
16:42
Basic HTML?
Too
Like what tags?
<strike> and such. Stuff like what SE supports
Yeah.
Make it in 3rd person
@AnnonomusPenguin Kinda short and odd, but here's the raw MD:
> EthanBierlein of those <strike>wierdos</strike> developers working on [Cactus](github.com/ShearOfDoom/Cactus), a game engine used to build text-based adventure games (think Zork). He hopes to someday get into professional game design, and even design his own game!

Oh noes, the world has gone silent.
17:27
Hello?
17:39
crickets
Annonomus penguin isn't here right now
He didn't just talk
Is that a good "about me"?
Well, if you think anything needs to be changed, you can change it. I'm gonna go hang out with some friends for a while.
brb
17:53
Ok
I have it going from Ethan → Me. @Quill and @QPaysTaxes: whichever one of you gets your bio in first gets it next in the page.
I'm ordering by who gets it in first for fairness.

1 hour later…

[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] Annonomus-Penguin pushed commit 6fc23f59 to gh-pages: Added more content, testing breadcrumbs, improved Jerkyll
Don't you just love it when something breaks with no error messages? :P
20:06
I have a website update that I'm close to pushing
I just need to finish building the breadcrumbs
20:38
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] Annonomus-Penguin pushed commit 053e4d7e to gh-pages: Fixed Problems
New changes live :)
The site looks awesome, if I say so myself!
I put a lot of work into the breadcrumbs/etc.
I now need to populate it
21:29
@QPaysTaxes me too
You can make it silly
@QPaysTaxes the order
Something simple to put alongside your name
And list any contact info you want (if you have an email for your online profile, like I do)
Your GitHub profile?
Yeah, I do that for everyone
@QPaysTaxes send it to me
Just let me add it
@QPaysTaxes I have some local changes
Just send it to me and I'll add it in
Hey, @AnnonomusPenguin, Can you change my flair on the team page to this: <a href="http://stackexchange.com/users/4280743/ethan-bierlein"><img src="http://stackexchange.com/users/flair/4280743.png" width="208" height="58" alt="profile for Ethan Bierlein on Stack Exchange, a network of free, community-driven Q&amp;A sites" title="profile for Ethan Bierlein on Stack Exchange, a network of free, community-driven Q&amp;A sites" /></a>?
@QPaysTaxes I'm mid change :P
@QPaysTaxes but... styleguide! :D
@QPaysTaxes I would be copying it!
Hmm.... just make it look exactly like the others, mkay?
@QPaysTaxes already have his network wide one in local copy
I'll fix the theme issue
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] newbiedoodle pushed commit a44ad645 to gh-pages: Added QPaysTaxes' stuff
How should we handle the changelog to keep the docs in sync?
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] Annonomus-Penguin pushed commit 6e2d9f04 to master: Rename changelog.txt to CHANGELOG.txt
21:42
It's also generally in the root dir
@Ethan wanted it in that folder
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] newbiedoodle pushed commit 5d136668 to gh-pages: Made it third-person
what?
I would've caught that if you would've sent it to me :P
They aren't the same!
No : on end of line
Email style is different (we do this to prevent spam bots)
But now
It's not consistent!
aaarrrgggg
;P
What?
Ethan's doesn't have it?
@QPaysTaxes subjective
@QPaysTaxes it annoys me if it's not :)
he has it linked
But he doesn't have a Twitter
You're confusing consistency and equivalency.
That's like saying that we both should have the same exact bio.
22:03
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] Annonomus-Penguin pushed commit 52749a80 to gh-pages: Updated About; Added Docs/Contrib content
What?
@QPaysTaxes the commit message?
Those are semicolons
What?
@QPaysTaxes This is my reasoning: One place that you should use colon is before a list
For example, the features section of the homepage
That wouldn't make sense to not have a colon there, right?
And it looks worse to mix colons and no colons in a single document, so I just go with all colons.
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] Annonomus-Penguin pushed commit 577a1dfd to gh-pages: Removed useless header (forgot to do this before push)
2 mins ago, by Annonomus Penguin
And it looks worse to mix colons and no colons in a single document, so I just go with all colons.
@QPaysTaxes but, there's two headings on that page!
So one would have a colon, the other wouldn't
It looks weird
We're wasting time here. If you don't like it, you edit all of them out yourself.
I'm going to get back to development
@Ethan can you edit the game website into the GitHub description?
22:29
Hello
@EthanBierlein hi
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] Annonomus-Penguin pushed commit afd1f31f to gh-pages: Jekyll doesn't support code blocks formatted with backticks
Hey, just one odd thing about the site that I just noticed. Is this sentence incomplete, or should I drop the end? Flexible event handler that you
Ahhhhhhh
hahhsdflskdfksldf
So much stuff to fix
Is something supposed to come after you?
I can fix it.
22:31
Yeah it was supposed to be something like "that you can use to run custom functions when a certain event happens"
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] Annonomus-Penguin pushed commit 9ff95912 to gh-pages: Missed a ``` code blcok
@EthanBierlein are you fixing it? Feel free to do so
Yup. Give me a sec
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] ShearOfDoom pushed commit 0a486a32 to gh-pages: Added missing text.
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] ShearOfDoom pushed commit 5a3b8c07 to gh-pages: Removed period
22:35
Feel free to start contributing to the site now that I'm almost done. I have to finish moving some stuff over, but other than that, it's done. I can help you create a page if you want another page somewhere.
Unless you already know what to put in the Jekyll front matter :)
I have no clue how to use Jekyll, so I'll leave that to the local master, but if you could just work your magic, and create a v0.2.x-alpha docs page, that'd be nice. :)
@EthanBierlein are we going to release a version soon?
Let's finish the v0.1.0-alpha so we can copy those to the v0.2.0
"Soon" is still to be determined. I was thinking we could just have it setup so I could write the docs right before the version is released.
So delete the v0.1.0 docs?
Yes, but keep the v0.1.0-alpha release.
Since it was just a quick pre-release I cobbled together hastily, we don't really need docs for it.
22:39
Are you going to work on github.com/ShearOfDoom/Cactus/issues/18 before 0.2.0?
v0.2.x-alpha is going to be better. I'm also going to do some work on the syntax tonight as well.
Well, hopefully it's better :P
It will take quiet a bit of reconfiguration though, so don't expect immediate results.
And since it's also going to involve changing all the files, we're going to have to be really careful to avoid collisions tonight,
@EthanBierlein just the arguments to __init()__, right?
Or what all are you talking about?
Well, essentially, all the classes are going to have one argument now, class_data. This argument is a dictionary that will contain the data for that object, with a key.
Which means I need to do a whole shitload of renaming.
22:42
I thought we were going to just have that as the initial argument
So copy all of that data into the different variables
Do you know what I'm saying?
Sure. But this little thing you suggested yesterday is what I'm going to do tonight: github.com/ShearOfDoom/Cactus/issues/18#issuecomment-109787448
I was asking if we were going to contain all of the same internal variables, just change the function definition, or if we're going to store everything in a dictionary inside the class.
Then, after I'm done with that, ^^, I'm going to work on using dictionary keys as choice references, rather than indexes.
Storing everything inside of a dict inside of the class.
22:46
Lots of code to break work on.
Yeah, but, I stay up late, so, I still have about 7 hours to do it. xD
When will you start?
Probably around 6:30-7:00PM US central time.
I'll post a large message in bold in here saying that I'm starting the refactoring process, so you don't have to guess when I start.
22:49
So, let me finish working on the docs here. I won't mess with the code until you're done with that because I don't know if I'll have time to finish what I want
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] Annonomus-Penguin pushed commit 417e9817 to gh-pages: Updated docs
Alrighty. Sounds like a plan. We probably won't release v0.2.0-alpha for a while though. There is still some other issues to work on before the release.
Yes
Remember that we don't have to fix all of the issues before a release
Also, I'm slightly confused on what to put in CHANGELOG.txt. Do we just put information about what's changed from version to version, or what?
That's impossible
@EthanBierlein yes. Anything that the user would want to know
Make it descriptive
22:52
I know, just get some of the big ones done, like syntax.
External parts of code always needs to be added with much detail; smaller stuff can be just mentioned quickly
monking
Morning @Quill
6 hours ago, by Annonomus Penguin
Ok, for the site, I'm going to add a page about our team. Send me a small snippet about you for me to add (GH push team only), 1x SE flair, email, Twitter, anything else
um
okay
@Quill, essentially, write a description of yourself in 3rd person.
With relevant info.
@all Hey, btw, I'm going to delete both of the test files, due to the oncoming syntax changes. Okay?
I'm also going to remove the master/examples folder as well, for now.
@all should be a direct ping-all alias
@Quill we should make a bot for that
Next project!
23:00
It's probably closer to an SE integrated feature than a bot
A bot could do it
Hey, the emails on the team page don't follow a constant structure
They would just ping every user in the room with the message ^^^
@EthanBierlein, you should add your blog to your bio on the team page
[ShearOfDoom/Cactus] ShearOfDoom pushed commit d5931671 to master: Removed examples for incoming changes.
23:02
Oooh. I should
I'll do that later though. I have other things to do.
If you send me a link, I can add it
I haven't posted recently, I don't do it that often, but here: burningkeyboard.wordpress.com
I just had a great idea. We could have someone write a bot to push "alerts" to this room. For example, say that someone isn't in the room, and is busy working on the code, they could just type a message, and the bot auto-formats it and pushes it to this room.
I suppose
ask @SimonAndréForsberg for advice maybe
Yeah lol. I have no idea how to use the StackExchange API. We'd also have to create a bot account with more than 20 rep too.
23:21
@EthanBierlein what?
What do you mean by that?
Are you talking about that absurd, crazy little idea?
The bot?
That was just a strange idea I had. Nothing that I really considered. From looking at @Duga's source already, I'm not sure if I want to create a bot anyways...
Well, brb, gonna go get a bite to eat.
23:47
Hello @bazola
hey @EthanBierlein
write any interesting code lately?
Not me in particular, but @AnnonomusPenguin has been doing a lot of work getting the site looking nice/
got a link?
it looks nice
23:50
I like it. It has a deserty "vibe" which goes along with cactus nicely
have you thought about rendering the game as bitmap glyphs with OpenGL or similar? you could make each letter a sprite, and then you could easily manipulate color or even do animations with the letters
That's a cool idea. We're still in early alpha though, so something like that is still a long way off.
I was thinking that when this project really takes off, we could have a GUI for creating a game that auto-generates code.
@AnnonomusPenguin / @QPaysTaxes / @Quill I'm removing the webhook from the pinned messages.
I'm going to remove my fork from the webhook connection later (github banned here) seeing as we can do pull reqs now
@bazola You should check out our network graph. It looks really cool.
what kind of output do you currently have? just strings or?
23:55
Just strings atm.
i believe i could pretty easily create a libGDX game that took strings as input and rendered them as openGL sprites
Cool. If we do graphics, I'm thinking either plain OpenGL with Python, or some wrapper, like Pyglet.
@bazola wait so, just to have colors and text that moves? Or are you saying more than that?
i believe that the easiest way to integrate with libGDX would be to use Jython, but i have never used it before
every letter would be a sprite on the screen, so you could add actions to the sprite, fade, animations, anything really
you could even have clickable links that lead to other parts of the story
@bazola that sounds like it would be a huge hit to performance... each letter? D:
