Q: Polyglot Hello World, with a C-based twist

TogiCoderChallenge 1: Write a program that is both valid C (in any compiler from the last 25 years with no additional flags) and python. When run in C or Python, it should output β€œHello, World!” and no additional output. Reward: 50 points - num characters in program Challenge 2: Complete Challenge 1 using...

Shoutout to me almost getting marked down to an A on my cryptography final for not fully expanding basic arithmetic
Lost a mark for writing β€œ4 is not coprime to 26” without calculations and another four for not fully expanding modpow by hand
01:34
sheesh
I feel like the 4 not being coprime to 26 is very harsh
02:02
yeah WHAT
like
they're both even
02:15
Why wouldn't you fully expand it anyway?
Worst case scenario you waste a few minutes, but you know that you've provided some superset of what the markers want
it's a pain in the ass and if it wasn't spelled out that the grader's going to demand it it just feels bad
at worst it would even feel embarrassing to waste the effort even though you know it won't actually get you marked down for expanding too much
@UnrelatedString it can be annoying but wouldn't you rather be confident in knowing you won't lose four marks for a simple task?
if I even think of doing so, yeah :P
or maybe I sit there for 5 minutes thinking "okay just go back and write this out better safe than sorry" and then just never have the motivation to do it and give up
granted I'm not sure that's ever happened? because if anything I get way too carried away on complete nonsense contingency stuff instead LMAO
once spent like 10 minutes reversing something's endianness computing powers of 2 up to like 27 by hand
even though it was painfully obvious from context that that couldn't possibly be necessary
02:33
@lyxal because this is a third-year maths course and I shouldn't have to expect this level of bullshit
Third year doesn't mean you don't have to show your working
Even if it's obvious, it shows you're not making random guesses
oh don't mind me I randomly guessed what 138^11 mod 1047 is
Hey I didn't say it's perfect
I'm saying if you want marks, you have to play by the rules of the marker
Sometimes it's BS, but it's the principal that counts
Or principle
@lyxal and this just got edited into a completely different challenge that still doesn't fit the rules of the site
Pfft
OK now that's funny
@emanresuA still probably ai generated too
02:44
yep lol
Very silly individual
The title is probably the prompt
I think there's a few extra guiding things because chatgpt output is similar but still not quite the same

Apparently CMU has the first open-source semiconductor fab in the country and their logo looks so cool and a friend of mine works on the sputtering and has a hoodie with the logo and I think I'm going to join next semester
I'm not sure how much I could actually contribute given the limitations of my knowledge when it comes to...fabricating semiconductors? but I can probably do something useful lol

Q: Reopen request 276950

ArunabhThe question "Determine if it is possible to schedule a new event without overlapping any existing events" is closed as off-topic. I am really angry that my recent edits have not been successful in reopening the question. So, I am waiting for a satisfactory edit to reopen this question. How to ge...

pffffff
05:26
They do seem to be trying
I don't think this user was treated in a very welcoming manner
05:47
I left a pretty comprehensive answer
I'm pretty sure if it got reopened it'd get dupe-hammered but I'm too tired to search for dupe targets
Also in the future, seriously, please hold off on downvoting questions from users who are clearly new to the site (this user's posted a question 6 months ago that did well, but to someone without experience here it might be difficult to recognize that minor things like including the tag or restricting to a single language could have such a large impact on reception)
I know downvotes are "for" bad posts but we should be looking to welcome users and improve post quality, not vindicate the design choices of a site intended for anything but what we're using it for
Anyway good night tnb o/
@rydwolf I downvoted because it's most likely AI generated
Not because it was bad or because the user was new
Arguably it fits the heuristics
Obviously I can't say which ones because they're not public
06:47
@ATaco you need hours -= -12;

2 hours later…
08:20
@mousetail'he-him' my $HOME is actually in a drive mounted at boot with NFS, which doesn't really obey stat() properly because of course
08:33
@rydwolf i'm sure they would be happy to teach you, and semis are really fun
Says the person with the daily "throw ARM into the sun" rants :p
Gotta love how the CSS sepia filter is used for everything except creating an actual sepia effect
08:52
it's like box-shadow
hello all!
@Simd Favorite CSS property?
09:30
@emanresuA i regret to inform you that the daily throw ARM into the sun rant has been canceled indefinitely due to us selling the division that works with their products πŸŽ‰
also, semis are fun on their own, the businesses making money from them aren't really
which sounds bovious now that i've said it out loud, capitalism ruins everything again

semitrucks
putting the trans in transportation really
10:32
@rydwolf If you figure out how they work you can get a nice job at ASML

@mousetail'he-him' ...this has me very morbidly curious now
It's basically used as hue = known value; saturation = 1. Then you can hue rotate or apply different effects to tint in arbitrary colors, add some invert and other filters and you can do basically arbitrary color manipulation.
15:52
ahhhhh
That's nice

2 hours later…
17:26
heh, thats not something you see every day
@emanresuA gotta love it when you dont expand to their liking
i once got points off for not showing how i transformed something like x + 4 = 0 to x = -4
ok so i have 10.5k network rep, supposedly i can see chat flags now, how do i?
They just pop up
There will be a blue number next to your pfp in chat
It's an overrated privilege, I never see flags I feel I know how to deal with
17:41
i see
17:51
enjoy your blessing / curse!

prepare to know more about mathematics.SE than you ever wanted to!
at least you can actually handle all the russian ones

Q: Extremely Hard Quine

MalbolgerYour main goal is print the source code, with quite unusual converting methods. 1- Make code as base64 2- Encrypt the code using AES256, with password of input (STDIN). 3- Make result reverse. 4- Encode with base64 5- Encrypt source code with password of it's source code. 6- Make temporary result...

oh this is a different guy
18:41
VTCed as needing details or clarity
Needs more focus is more appropriate I think
oh right :p
forgot we had that
always fun skirting the character limit on comments
I love how 4 people commented with increasingly verbose explanations of the same thing
well now my comment looks silly
18:43
My comment also looks silly now emanresu explained it better
remind me, what's the guideline for moving closed posts to trash? I would assume that this one specifically shouldn't be moved since we're talking about it and that would strip the conversation of its context
I was going to put in a "as [ginger, thejonymyster and mousetail] mentioned" but ran out of space :p
We appreciate the attempt
We usually don't move posts that make some attempt at being an actual challenge
right
18:44
even if it's, y'know, this
someone should write "TNB Room Ownership For Dummies"
Step 1: Cover yourself in butter
19:09
wait for it to toast

1 hour later…
20:39
@mousetail'he-him' ick
I don't plan on working in tech or anything profit producing
@Ginger not doing it
Trash is for spam only IMO

noted
or, well, incl. "this is not stack overflow"
I assumed as much
22:07
@lyxal Oxford University Press's 2024 word of the year is "brainrot"
Very skibidi
Only in Ohio moment

I tried adding threads to my lua extension to make AOC faster, but the serialization overhead was HUGE

How did a post from 2015 end up in the VLQ queue
Could have been flagged as such
