@Seggan Where is the chat context for the spellcheck question? I'd like to edit the question to be code-golf instead of just the tags.
There isn't, other than that it was originally posted as a CMC which are implicitly

Q: Counting birds outside my house

Wheat WizardOutside your house there are a series of telephone wires, which birds like to perch on. They mostly sit still, but every so often a flock of them moves. Flocks of birds follow a peculiar pattern of movement. One flock of birds always moves at once. That is every bird in the flock moves, no bird ...

Q: Find the Smallest Data Type for a Number

EzlandingRecently I had to implement this problem in c#, and thought it would make for a good code golf. Your goal is to output the smallest unsigned data-type a 64 bit unsigned number can fit into. Input: An unsigned 64-bit number (or the closest builtin equivalent in your chosen language) Output: A numb...

15:05
@Themoonisacheese With just 10 values I think every answer will just hard code or use basic string compression
@mousetail'he-him' what do you suggest be done better?
You could just make it count in Japenese and go up to one thousand or so, but even then it's been done many times before. I'm not sure if it's salvageable
i kinda feel like just making a decimal->japanese converter just entails that at the end of the day and i feel like the output of that would just end up the same with additional logic
Yes, but logic is the fun of code golf. So additional logic means more of the good stuff
@mousetail'he-him' yeah i don't think this would do much to fix it
i don't feel like that kind of logic would be very fun though, i feel like that part has been done many times
15:11
String compression has been done many times before too, and challenges of that sort are usually closed
big if true
@mousetail'he-him' idk i felt like there was somewhat of a challenge there
IMHO a challenge is good if and only if it has interesting logic
Others might still enjoy it though
@Adám ...wrong link?
in my mind the fact that it wasn't literal just KC but also didn't have many different outputs would make it sit in a sweet spot where it's not immediately obvious if one should hardcode the output or run some light logic on it, making the challenge interesting
15:22
@Ginger no, why?
oh.
then again i am of the overarching opinion that actually programming the solution is not very interesting, the interesting part is figuring out the solution
how did you find this??

A: What happened to the memes page?

DennisFor those who can't see deleted posts: I deleted the memes question. However, I didn't act unilaterally; this decision was made by the moderation team. While it wasn't the best fit for a Meta question, it was locked and doing no harm to the community. Unfortunately, we disagree with the sec...

My petition to re-open or create a new one still stands. I think the memes we have nowadays are less harmful than the ones in the past that where creating issues.
i think you're too hopeful personally
what's the policy for anniversary-related challenges ? i guess we have flag-drawing challenges for country independance days, but would it make more sense to publish my challenge on main, say, on the anniversary of Tama's birth?

i guess my question was more about community perception ie: if my challenge isn't all that great, would people care slightly more about it if it is posted on a related anniveersary or do people just not care?
16:01
i think they would; i've seen challenges get a lot of attention due to timing.
CMC: decide if a string A has necessarily overlapping* instances of a nonempty string B. examplies: A="aabxbx" B="ab" => true *A="aabcc" B="abc" => false A="eerieeerie" B="eerie" => false A="eerieeriee" B="eerie" => true

Q: The Many Memes of Meta

TheTXICatchphrases and concepts that spread from person to person are known as memes, which, courtesy the Internet, can now explode across the Earth like a highly contagious virus (hence "going viral"). As with their real-life counterparts, some infectious diseases are global (pandemic), while others a...

Compared to a glossary, a many memes of x post documents the jokes within a chat room
This can make it easier for new users to understand what the heck we mean when we go on with nonsense
22:25
@mousetail'he-him' I really don't think there's much point. The old one was closed because it was mostly irrelevant and annoying, and I don't see how we'd stop a new one from becoming that
With room owners actively ensuring the room doesn't become too annoying
We literally just appointed 5 more ROs, I think we have the ability and presence to keep things from becoming annoying
The irrelevance part is a problem, yes, but the post would serve as a sort of source of community engagement
TNB has changed. It's no longer the site and no longer the culture that led to the memes post being deleted in the first place
Even so I really don't think there's much point in maintaining a list of in-jokes and references. If you look at all the memes posts across the network linked from the meta.SE one, they have a total of ~15 edits over the last four years.
they may as well have historical locks
These things become irrelevant, and they do so fairly quickly. As ais523 put it, the Q/A format originally created for Stack Overflow is incredibly bad at handling information that changes over time, and there's very little point in maintaining a new list. The "annoying" bit is why it had to be deleted, but it was never going to be unlocked in the first place
If you want to maintain an external list elsewhere, go for it, but meta is not the right place for this.
22:43
agreed tbh
I think the novelty will wear off real fast
i think having a meta post (which basically means it's officially endorsed) will have the same problem as last time, which is why it got deleted, of keeping stale memes on life support. and if it doesn't, then things come and go and what's the point in record-keeping things we want to be trends that pass by and not artificially stay alive beyond their relevance
6
i think given new users can just like, ask (it's not likely that a new user would see something they don't get and go to meta, be able to find the memes list, and then find the specific meme especially when it isn't always going to be worded the same e.g. "you're not X you're Y"), it doesn't really justify the downsides that we have objectively already seen once (and moderation wasn't inactive back then, if i recall correctly, maybe i don't)
in the future memes wont even have the in between words to search by. in 2055 the most popular meme formats are X Y X Y Y Z X Z and X! X! Y Z A B X A
@hyperneutrino true!
memes die
the meta post is already a graveyard, Jeff's giant S (for example) has to my knowledge been officially deprecated
no point in making a glossary for something transient. people will learn the culture by immersion, as they have done since time immemorial
22:59
that doesn't mean it's not worth having documented history
knowyourmeme exists for example
and so are pretty much all the other ones across the network. The only reason ours had to be explicitly locked and deleted was because it was actually causing issues
@lyxal Exactly - as I said before, if you want to maintain an external list, somewhere else, go for it
external lists die
links rot
the point of it being on meta is that it'd actually be able to survive
@lyxal and so do the memes that formed them
2 mins ago, by lyxal
that doesn't mean it's not worth having documented history
should we not then have a history of code golf blog post?
23:02
that happens slower i reckon
my point being that just because things fall out of fashion, that doesn't mean having an on-site documentation place is useless
so what if it becomes irrelevant
the problem isn't really documenting things that later become irrelevant, it's that we've seen it cause irrelevant things to stay alive longer than they should — that's not a hypothetical unless there's some factor that you think has changed that would lead to a situation where this time would differ from last time
I do think there's a factor that has changed
internet culture
we're not having tons of conversations like 2016-2019
we're not doing "random = funny" anymore
meme culture has become so fast that people drop references all the time
one could argue that that's because we're not keeping around a list of things that explicitly says "hey this is random stuff people say to be funny" but i don't think i can exactly prove that lol. but that does differentiate it from a history of code golf post — again i am not opposed to documentation inherently, i just don't think it matters much
like i guess i just don't see much value in it at all, much less when compared to the threshold needed to justify it against potential issues that i believe it will (re-)introduce
3
23:07
then change the premise of the meme post to be "these are historic memes, use with caution"
ah, yes, because this is the internet and those sorts of warning labels definitely work
not a warning label, the purpose
don't make it seem like a "here's a list of currently funny"
make it seem like an archive
And if it's going to be a list of historical in-jokes and references, why have it at all?
y'all are thinking this room gets that much activity to be a problem in the first place
even historical locking the OG post didn't work so i don't know if i agree. the reason memes move on is because people simply forget and they fall out of relevance and new people don't really have a way to go through past memes that easily
23:08
@emanresuA because it documents what was
i'd rather our little activity be worth coming to this room for for the few people who do
what's been
@hyperneutrino like a memes list is going to encourage people to start spamming like crazy
there is a gap between this will have no impact on the quality of this room at all and people will suddenly just start spamming. that's not what i'm saying
a lot more people are a lot more sensible than they were in the period the original memes post existed
if there are people who say they want a memes post, then it isn't intrinsically useless or valueless.
@lyxal site culture has greatly shifted since 2017 when the post was deleted. E.g. that was when there was still people having problems with golfing languages on the site (a debate you wouldn't see today). A simple search for "lawless" in the chat transcript reveals that in the time of the memes post, TNB was a lot more loose and early 2010'sesque
i support lyxal
23:18
the "objective downsides" from last time stemmed from a community that was a lot more wild, and coming off the internet culture of 2012
where you had stuff like mlg, "ooo baby a triple", cheezburger memes, and that sort of stuff
the factor that's changed since then is everyone (in the world, not just TNB) has moved on from loud and obnoxious being funny
[citation needed]
This space has grown up a lot, yes. and we'd like to keep it that way
a memes post wouldn't degrade that
@emanresuA internet in the early 2010's was much different to what it is now
anyone who ever engaged with the internet in that time can tell you that
23:33
@lyxal doubt.png
@Ginger you don't see MLG compilations anymore :p
the loud I mean is purposefully loud, compared to today's absurdist brainrot stemming from post-irony
