Okay so I was making a joke in a post on my insta and I calculated a rough approximation of the number of days I've been alive and by pure chance I got exactly 6969 days
(turns out I actually have 10 days to go before the funniest day of my life)
but I had to make up a slightly different number since that would be so unbelievable lol
Tuesday October 22nd better be a really good day
69420 days would require me to survive to over 190 years, so 6969 probably will be the funniest day I will live to see
01:13
@rydwolf Okay so apparently it doesn't predict 9/11, it implies that Kermit the Frog is responsible for 9/11
(I didn't stay through the whole movie so I didn't see that part, sadly)

The C.mmp was an early multiple instruction, multiple data (MIMD) multiprocessor system developed at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) by William Wulf (1971). The notation C.mmp came from the PMS notation of Gordon Bell and Allen Newell, where a central processing unit (CPU) was designated as C, a variant was noted by the dot notation, and mmp stood for Multi-Mini-Processor. As of 2024, the machine is on display at CMU, in Wean Hall, on the ninth floor. == Structure == Sixteen Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-11 minicomputers were used as the processing elements, named Compute Modules (CMs) in...
This thing's actually super cool
It's kinda sad it's just rotting in the mechanical penthouse of one of our buildings (which is locked and inaccessible to students)
That doesn't seem to have stopped you up to this point :p
I live and die by university policy
I am a rule-abiding model citizen
02:59
Is MIMD just a fancy name for multithreading
Maybe, or perhaps it's differentiated in that it's sixteen PDPs in a trench coat rather than true multithreading

12:45
now im curious
12:57
@Ginger did somebody already tell you about pronouns being broken?
already tried reloading the cache
13:09
@RubenVerg ugh
errors in the console?
@rydwolf :3
Bbrk and lyxal have the only unaffected pronouns I've seen so far
13:31
(also this is the first I've noticed it)
@UnrelatedString :|
amazing
I'll look into it later today
13:48
hello!
I'm building a kind of golfing site thing. Check out a very very early alpha here: yq.mousetail.nl (running on my laptop for now so probably going down in a few hours)
Also expect all data to be deleted before going live
:)
looks fun
but why?
oh, made another account to test some stuff with chat library but forgot i need 20 rep
@Simd Because week.golf died
Wanted to make something similar but with challenges lasting 6 months instead of one week
halfyear.golf
13:56
Also you will be able to create private challenges to send to your friends in addition to public ones
I hope it works out!
Also I'd like to host some KOTHs etc.
Discord if people are interested in keeping up to date or contributing: discord.gg/ugbfdgzpjK
kinda wanted to make a small golf site myself but would alternatively love to contribute!
That would be great
reminiscent of jugly.io (a JS golf site I found today)
14:00
Lots of people on code.golf also golf on jugly
@RubenVerg if i create a room, can i set people to be able to talk with 0 rep?
no
but I can :p
i suppose maybe you should just add the user to the sandbox then
what's the account?
14:03
granted
thank you
14:39
@mousetail hmm ive always had an idea of creating a common KotH protocol

Messing around on anagol and I am HEARTBROKEN to discover that CLC-INTERCAL just errors if you try to do alphanumeric input with an array smaller than the line
(as opposed to eating it as a bytestream the way C-INTERCAL does. granted it also has binary I/O for that but I had a fun idea that specifically exploited Extended EBCDIC)
18:59
Ayyy chat finally unblocked my parents' IP apparently lol
amazing
I'll power up the server rq
Later tonight I can spin up a VM for you, idk if you want to transfer stuff yourself or have me try to do it

@Bbrk24 Because my pronouns are "/". Do not refer to me.
@rydwolf idrc as long as I have the stuff :p
because in my infinite wisdom I failed to back up a lot of things on that server

Q: Roll a die in 3D

aeh5040Simulate a roll of a fair die, and output the result in this ascii-art form: .-----------. / o o /| / /o| / o o / | :-----------:o o| | o o | | | |o o: | o | / | |o/ | o o |/ '-----------' Details The outline of the die ...

My pronouns are ‮, so every time you refer to me, your message will unfortunately have to look garbled and demented. Oh well. 😮‍💨
Please don't
I do not wish to be referred to as "don't".
Sep 7 at 23:03, by rydwolf
There is a long history, both on- and offline, of jokes being made about pronouns and how people outside the traditional gender binary identify (e.g., the "I identify as an attack helicopter" joke). These jokes are made at the expense of people who already may struggle to get others to recognize and respect their identity
Sep 7 at 23:05, by rydwolf
Setting your pronouns to something silly may not have the intent to put down nonbinary/trans/genderqueer people, but intent doesn't always change how people will interpret your joke
My pronouns are not "something silly".
21:05
And to add onto that: even if the joke isn't interpreted at all, it still cheapens the whole idea
Please don't refer to me as "the whole idea".
People should/want to be able to treat "this person's stated pronouns in this easy to find place are how they want me to refer to them" as so basic and automatic an assumption that they apply zero scrutiny when they do so
Merely recognizing joke pronouns disrupts that
Stop calling me random things, my name is not "this person's stated pronouns in this easy to find place are how they want me to refer to them".
Please stop making these jokes. I have the tools to remove you from this room and I'd prefer not to have to use them
wakes up from a silly slumber Wait what, I violated a loophole FOUR times in a row!?!
21:11
You didn't violate any loopholes. You're just being a dick
There is no loophole out of that
(which is very generally speaking the case in, like. literally any social situation)
I really thought it didn't need to be explained why Joke Pronouns are harmful, but I've been proven wrong
unfunny 👎
how many times have we had to have this discussion? just don't be a dick
@UnrelatedString troubleshooting this
seems like pronouns.page has started returning an empty object from the pronouns list endpoint
My workplace has implemented pronouns on signatures and in our teams chat, but only for non-cisgender employees, which feels really reductive
???
Yeah what
?????
@UnrelatedString mine seems fine thi
*though
yeah I think this is an issue with pronouns.page
21:21
That's not even reductive
that's just fucked up
if they haven't fixed it in two days I'll patch the script to use a different source
Could also make the script ignore the empty object if it detects an empty object and defer to another source like bio parsing
@UnrelatedString The intentions were pure enough, but the execution...
@UnrelatedString it queries en.pronouns.page/api/pronouns as an authoritative source on commonly used pronoun sets
21:25
Ahhhh
and apparently if they don't return a coherent response things break!
that makes a lot of sense
@TheEmptyStringPhotographer Many people here have asked you in many different ways to stop with the pronoun jokes.
They are not welcome in this community. I recognize the line can be a bit difficult to find (
Dammit my edit was too late to go through
Time retype some stuff
Oh dang, Interpret Brainfuck was closed
21:30
(2/2) but you've missed the line over and over again, and made jokes which are interpreted as being at the expense of trans people and gender minorities. Please just avoid the risk of that happening by not making any pronoun-related jokes. I will not be giving nice warnings anymore.
I don't think your intent is to be hurtful, but more than a handful of users have expressed feelings of unwelcomeness from those jokes, and given that our community kinda exists to be a refuge from real world problems, we can afford very little tolerance for that.
I, and the other ROs here, would be glad to answer any questions or discuss further, and feel free to create a room with one of us or talk to me on discord at @rydwolf if you'd like to talk privately.

@ATaco sure is sad
can't write any more of them for that Q then
It just needs to be rewritten to be more clear and objective
But who has time for that?
jan
jan
where do I submit drafts?

jan
jan
@UnrelatedString oh, as a new question? that would solve the problem that, much like with the C specification, we can't really apply an unambiguous specification to existing solutions that used wiggle-room which previously existed
21:55
Why not? One can intentionally under-spec so long as they're clear to under-spec
Oh, for answers? You just kinda
don't
Or you can post and immediately delete them if you really want but generally if you have something to draft you just do it somewhere else
@ATaco Working on an edit
22:10
I think ideally we'd make a new one with no comments or file I/O
Honestly I think it's just best to edit the old one, since:
- it already has a lot of good answers
- many of the more recent answers assume no comments and standard I/O rules
The main argument against loosening rules on old challenges is that it makes older answers less competitive, but that's no longer something we really care about
Also, interpreting brainfuck is a common way to demonstrate Turing-completeness, and I think it's good to a) have a list of these demonstrations b) keep that list open for future access
And there's probably not much done in the way of interesting adaptations to things we might loosen up
tue
I voite we find a way to keep the old one open with as few modifications as possible
@Ginger Server booted
22:14
Yeah... that said the edit I'm working on is also bringing it up to modern standards i.e. actually putting a BF spec in there
It's on my parents' IP
104.188.174.251
Lemme check up on the port forwarding
A few smaller tweaks I'd make to more or less preserve the spec but make it Less Bad would be, like
> Cells should be able to hold at least 0 .. 255
> There should be at least 30000 distinct cells [no mention of that being a maximum, or there being a requirement not to loop back]
@emanresuA My 12046 byte answer will be undermineddd!!!111!!!one!
I'm just writing it as "decrementing 0 or incrementing 255 is undefined behaviour, going past the ends of the tape is undefined behaviour"
and then whatever the hell "bad commands" meant I assume is easiest to roll into the actual spec (like no unbalanced [] I guess)
@emanresuA Ooh yeah that's smart
22:17
i.e. you can have arbitrarily large cells and an arbitrarily large tape if you want, but the program will never attempt to use integers beyond 0...255 or more than 30000 tape cells
and that's basically what the original spec is anyway, just much clearer
Maybe specifically say going past the 30000th tape cell just to make it easier to read as "you can have a bigger tape and it just literally doesn't matter"
@emanresuA I would word it closer to "input programs can be expected to keep cells in the range of 0 to 255, and index cells within 0 to 29,999, the handling of programs that exceed these parameters is not required."
@emanresuA Yeah it's really hard not to read the original spec as you can't simulate a bigger tape and I have no idea how many people actually did something extra to implement it that way
@ATaco ohhh perfect
Yeah... I'm just putting that in the description of the commands - "+ does increment, incrementing 255 is undefined behaviour"
But yeah good point on making it explicit
For my challenges, I tend to over-restrict expected inputs.
22:19
I'm also going to restrict I/O to just ASCII while I'm here
Personally I'd say input would be JUST BF commands
@ATaco yeah also including that
I feel like comments are out of scope
Give me another minute or two to finish my edit then y'all can change whatever I've missed
22:21
👍
I'm in
lemme just boot up the gingersrv
this is gonna be ✨fun✨
22:34
@emanresuA done
I sure love sitting in a 3m timer during boot knowing that the thing it's waiting on will neevr finish
:\
also apparently I can do the reopen review on that despite being the one who edited it, interesting
okay @Ginger server is up
ssh -p 2210 [username]@104.188.174.251
wonderful
is this a temporary thing or is it Actually Back
22:38
Depends on Factors which are Variable
I See
Assume for now that it is a temporary thing
My long-term plan is to transfer you onto a DO VM I'm not using
What kinda specs do you need?
right
I'll go ahead and copy everything important to my PC
@rydwolf uhhhhh
since I'm not hosting any games on it it just needs to be not shit
ginger.rto.community is still down, currently diagnosing if that's my fault
It's a DNS issue
The server's on my parents' IP again
If it does continue Long Term it would be switching IPs again in a week though
right
how much of a hassle would it be to move the domain? I've got some associates that I may or may not have made some promises to
22:42
Gimme a sec
done
thamks
my cert's expired lmao
