@lyxal not to mention the PLDI sphere
Also do we know said person?

So I haven't slept in like 40 hours and I don't know why but Cardigan melon did this like magic show thing I guess just so like feel some time and I'm like so sleep deprived and I'm badly hallucinating and so yeah magic shows get a lot more interesting when you're literally hallucinating because I was like wow she was impressive how he turns that guy into a center and apparently that wasn't all the premise of any of the tricks I don't know where I got that
(Sent with voice message it there's any weird issues)
melon?
01:00
He's a student at Cardigan Melon :P
Cardigan Melon Universal
ah
going to permanently say cardigan melon now

Q: Can we change the title text of the vote buttons

corvus_192I just noticed that the title text (displayed on mouse hover) of the up- and downvote buttons are currently "This answer is useful" and "This answer is not useful". While they're useful for most SE sites, they don't make sense on PPCG. Is there any way we can change these texts?

> If this is still a request of interest, please open a new feature request to discuss and pass over to us via [status-review]. Thanks! –
Slate
Is this still of interest to us?
I imagine not given it hasn't had activity for 3 years
Mostly because we had kinda given up on getting any customization, Slate's response suggest a very small chance of actually making it happen
If the option exists to customise these things on a per-site basis, we can definitely replace those with something better, but if not there's not much point
Slate's comment is the result of staff going through old status-review tagged questions and removing it from questions without activity
Also they might actually be fixing this:

Q: `\[` in code triggers LateX in preview

This is how the preview looks like: This is how the submission actually looks like: To reproduce, this query will attempt to render part of the code as LaTeX when it sho...

If we still wanted it, it would be just as considered as if it was still active
now that they have actual repro steps
@lyxal Some just got the tag removed with no comment
That doesn't imply they're less likely to be considered
It's just admin stuff
Cleaning up the todo lists
Which is a small step up above ignoring the todo list entirely
Not necessarily
I remember a while back Slate (or another cm I don't remember who) mentioned that's what was happening
Decluttering
Not ignoring or denying any status reviews at all
06:45
They are doing the community requests sprints every now and then now
That doesn't mean they'd ignore any future status-review requests
Not any less than they previously or currently would
Yes... that's what I'm saying
Depending on how you want your double negative interpreted
@mousetail my point is that the comment doesn't imply any likelihood or probability of being completed

Q: Change folder month name to the month name in another language

Peter M.A folder contains for each a month of the year a subfolder with the name of the month in English. Please come up with a PowerShell command that changes the name of each subfolder to a different language like German or French.

15:38
If 2 users close as unclear and 1 mod close as off-topic, is it unclear or off-topic?
3 possibilities I can come up: Mod count as 1 vote; Mod fill up 5 votes; Mod decide
15:54
I think hammer takes precedence
(I once failed an audit on SO because I thought that the previous close as dup votes were wrong, so I just went back to the question for real and hammered it closed for the right dup)

CMC Create a function F that returns true for approximately half of all Spanish words but almost no English words. Or pick any other two languages

Japanese and English: s=>/\W/.test(S)
For which language is it 50%?
I was going to try this but kept procrastinating on actually finding easy to use text file word lists :P
Oh was that a target not a high bound?
Actually I got a way better one
s=>s.match`e`
I bet E's in about half of words, right?
Well, if you do it by proportion of words used not proportion of words in a dictionary
I think this means proportion in a dictionary :P
Probably. T or S would probably work for that tho
Or A
19:14
But yeah that is actually kinda promising if you use a letter that doesn't exist in the other language's native script at all :P
I was thinking of looking at accented vowels in Spanish then possibly adding verb endings or whatever if that doesn't make the cut
why is linux deliberately trying to annoy me?
mkdir temp
mkdir: cannot create directory ‘temp’: File exists
rm temp/
rm: cannot remove 'temp/': Is a directory
make up your mind!
also, since when is "Is a directory" a sentence??
att
att
implicit topic ;)
as in "Is a fool" :)
why can't it say "Directory exists" though?
Can it not?
att
att
well it doesn’t
19:18
I assume there is some law preventing it
What happens if you try to make a file with the same name as a directory
given how old linux is now
Oh wait I didn't read
I think it just doesn't bother distinguishing directories from non-directory files
it does when I try to delete it
@UnrelatedString I am not sure how to do that
A directory is a file, in a broader sense of the word file
19:23
@RydwolfPrograms sure I get that in some deep technical sense
but it's not at all helpful if rm then refuses because it is not a file
It's refusing because of what it is, not what it isn't
I am thinking of people discussing linux for the wider population now :)
A directly is just a list of files
*directory
There's not really any ambiguity in the snippet you posted if you see a directory as a type of file
19:26
It refuses to delete it because it could have contents and it would be bad to accidentally delete the contents if you thought you where deleting a file. This is special cased inside the rm command, not linux
Use rm -r to delete directories
@mousetail yes
Or rmdir ideally
Which makes sure it's empty first
You can also use mkdir -p to make a directory only if it doesn't exist yet, which sounds like what you are trying to do
19:27
and what is wrong with "It is a directory." ?
That's not the error the operating system gives
@Simd for which command?
Are you saying in place of "file exists"?
the error message
instead of "Is a directory"
Waste of space, doesn't need to be a full sentence
19:29
but then you could just write "dir"
that's shorter
or "Error" and leave it the user to work out :)
The subject is implied by the fact that the path's just been printed
sorry.. "Err"
There's no readability loss with removing the "it"
Unlike just saying "die"
it would be better to write "directory"
Err..."dir"
19:29
Err: DIR IS DIR!!!!!!
die would be a bit strong!
@mousetail :)
"die" would be an amazing error message tho
PHP has die() for exit
att
att
nothing wrong with it they just didn’t choose to use it
And dd() for dump and die

git committ # kys
Very aggressive operating system
github.com/nvbn/thefuck should be built in
I hate how kys is an acronym almost everyone understands. Why do we abbreviate such a hateful phrase often enough to make it an initialism?
what is kys?

20:21
@mousetail unlink won't remove directories (well maybe it used to if you were root and the directory really was empty, which meant unlinking the . and .. entries inside the directory first)
(although that behaviour probably never existed in linux as such)
20:58
...Hate to drag this back up, but I guess what really confuses me here is, like...
Does the need arise from attraction? Or is attraction a necessary consequence of the need?
You could make the point that attraction is the avenue for fulfilling the need
But I know multiple ace/sex-repulsed people who still experience attraction, so that doesn't seem like a perfect/complete descriptor
Interesting
(I feel like "ace proper" categorically means no attraction? But sex-repulsed people who do experience sexual attraction are definitely still some kind of acespec and also sound very unfortunate)
The very confusing one I've seen is a friend who describes themselves as sex-repulsed and ace, but also has, by their terms, "kinks"
Isn't that super common?
Or maybe I'm getting kinks and fetishes mixed up
I guess kinks are definitionally something you actually experience for yourself
To my knowledge, there isn't much difference between a kink and a fetish beyond the word
21:06
Mmmm
Actually, the only real distinction I've seen is that "fetish" tends to be negatively coded, while "kink" isn't
Ahhhhhhhhh
@UnrelatedString But, going back to this, "attraction" can be broken down into at least 3 different aspects, each of which can be described under a different "sexuality"
I mean specifically sexual attraction, if you mean sexual/romantic/aesthetic
Yeah, I was thinking overall for all three
21:11
Ahhh yeah no that makes way more sense
I've definitely heard of plenty of non-aro aces
But yeah, I've generally seen "ace" to be taken as "I have no desire or want to have sex"
@UnrelatedString And the opposite, non-ace aros :P
Mmmmm
@cairdcoinheringaahing Oh yeah don't they tend to get super stigmatized
Within my friend group, I think we easily check off all 4 aro/ace/allo/allo combinations :P
Maybe even with doubles :P
21:12
Amazing
@UnrelatedString Yeah, the stereotype of "they just sleep around" is so fun to deal with
(for context, I describe myself as aro/non-ace)
🙃
@cairdcoinheringaahing 🫂
Appreciate it, but there's no need :P
In my view, every group will always get unfairly stigmatized at one point or another. And while that sucks, the best approach (if you can) is to shrug the hatred off and go enjoy your life while someone else seethes at how happy you are :P
21:14
Very true
@cairdcoinheringaahing ...Honestly, if I'd thought about it in terms of the "or want" part all along instead of as coordinate with orientation proper (i.e., in terms of sets of people to be attracted to) I might have come around to it a lot faster LMAO
Because, like for years and years I had no idea what attraction actually was, so I thought I did experience it and was just really good at not acting on or otherwise being affected by it
@UnrelatedString Honestly, for me, the sexual/aesthetic/romantic breakdown was a massive game changer
But I also literally planned to never even try dating until I had had a stable job for multiple years and thought that was what any sensible person did
@cairdcoinheringaahing I briefly thought that aesthetic attraction was the thing I was mistaking for the other two, but then I actually looked it up and figured out that ain't quite there either :P
Figuring out that it was "Okay, I like looking at people regardless of gender if they're hot" (pan on aesthetic), "Nope, don't really ever wanna have a romantic relationship again" (aro) and "AAAAAAAAAAAA, WTF??!?!" (sexual) was very useful
Nice
There's a pretty good chance that what I was mistaking for aesthetic attraction was actually just gender envy lmao
@UnrelatedString The definition of asexual I've liked the best is "someone who does not feel attraction frequently enough or strongly enough to identify with another label"
21:26
That's a very good one
Also, just because you don't experience attraction doesn't necessarily mean you have zero libido
You don't have to tell me that 😬
I didn't read the whole conversation
@UnrelatedString Oh, god, don't even get me started on that
I don't think I've brought it up
Just saying I happen to know first hand 😬
21:28
I found one of the most relatable/gender envy comic strips the other day. It's slightly nsfw, so click at your own risk: cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1052233998966992966/…;
Reminder: I'm an ace.
o/
@cairdcoinheringaahing ahahaha
I'm not ace but I am somewhere on the aro spectrum. Part of what makes figuring out where hard is "do I really want a relationship or am I just touch-starved"
Can't say I relate hard
But lol
@Bbrk24 IKR
That's kind of what I've been agonizing over at the heart of all this to be honest
On a completely different note, I always find it funny to check in on the review queue stats to see my overall standing, and I'm pretty happy with it :P
21:32
Ayyy
Currently at 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 7th, 9th and 2nd, with LQP and Reopen being the annoying ones
I just need 14 more Reopen reviews to jump to 7th tho, so I'll take that
time to institute a mod policy of just closing all new poster's challenges on posting, then reviewing them for reopening :P
@UnrelatedString Or rather, the actual bottleneck in figuring out where on the spectrum is just lack of any experiences whatsoever to go off of, but your issue is still why I'm not comfortable just completely owning being aro-aro and calling it a day :P
What the hell happened to the reply there
How did the number turn into that
Oh it's just a zero in the middle
wait what happened
I missed the edit
There was just a zero in the middle so it didn't render as a reply
huh
21:38
But I took inordinately long to figure out where the extra digit was and how it got there
Is the ace flag the only pride flag that applies to me?
There's more generic ones if nothing else
I don't think anyone else can answer that question :P
But if you dig hard enough you might be able to find something more specific too :P
That's one where the only answer I can think of is to turn it back on you
21:42
I mean, I'm cisgender male. There is no "pride flag" for just male nor just cisgender, no?
Are you also 100% alloromantic
And exclusively towards women
If not I'm pretty sure there's a separate aro flag?
I guess, I'm heteroromantic.
Here's one that may or may not still apply: polyamory (having multiple partners at once)
the thing is, nobody can agree on which flag to use, so there's a billion flags for that
21:44
There even was a female classmate whom I pretended to love.
...I don't see how that's an "even"
@Bbrk24 ooooh good catch
@Bbrk24 Extra value :P
also, I don't think it's possible to rule out being intersex without hormonal and genetic testing, which most people don't bother to get for obvious reasons
Not to say you have any reason to assume you are -- they're a minority of the population, so it's safer to assume you aren't unless you have evidence -- but without those tests it's impossible to be certain
I'm sorry being ignorant, but do those with Klinefelter's syndrome or Turner's syndrome count as intersex?
21:58
I believe so, yeah
22:28
@Bbrk24 But yeah I guess the original motivation for my initial question is figuring out how to characterize that need on the premise that it's distinct from libido
Because I think I would be a lot less confused if it wasn't distinct
But if it isn't distinct then I am even more confused
Because my initial assumption of how allosexuality works is, like, there's a libido and then attraction just gives you an option to actually find something worthwhile to do with it
But the way Rydwolf put it it sounds more like there's something in between
22:53
So it absolutely can work like that, but it doesn’t have to
And the existence of certain microlabels introduces further complication
I’m going to try to talk about this without going too NSFW but it may be easier to have this convo in DMs given that this is a public space
For example, I have a couple friends who are aegosexual. This means that they do have libido and fantasies, but they prefer to handle that on their own and can’t imagine themselves actually *in* a sexual relationship with another person
There’s also demisexuality, where you don’t experience sexual attraction until after an emotional bond is formed
attraction often appears as a desire to do it with a specific person, vs libido is the desire to do it at all
gtg eat but I can continue later
mmm
Thanks
I was aware of the aegosexual label, and I feel like it kinda describes me, except I don't really like it because I'd prefer not to even have to resort to that if that makes any sense
Like the only two reasons I haven't figured out how to ask someone to prescribe me some kind of libido suppressant are because it's embarrassing and I forget :P
...Also I'm glad I went and sent that without figuring out how to qualify it with "even though I kinda also felt that way about some men sometimes" because I just realized
It's not just that it was only men whose bodies and/or presentation were varying degrees of feminine
It was specifically ones who completely lack or conceal the exact masculine traits I hate the most on myself
23:11
@UnrelatedString Both of them go by asexual most of the time but have admitted that aegosexual is technically more accurate
Makes sense :P
It's descriptive of an experience but pretty meaningless as an identity, I guess
I guess it could be useful in my case to communicate the sense that, like, "I" am the "missing piece"--at least to the extent that I am mildly sex-repulsed and that seems like it's entirely due to gender dysphoria--but the utility of communicating that is kinda marginal compared to the humiliation of everything else that implies
(And also yeah I'd be happy to take this to DMs if that's more appropriate)
23:44
@UnrelatedString Yeah, a lot of trans people become more comfortable with sex after transition
So I've heard :P
