Hi there hello
As per when I asked about when The Sand Trap should be frozen, and when Ginger suggested Sunday, and when there was agreement with Ginger's suggestion,
room topic changed to The Nineteenth Byte: General discussion for codegolf.stackexchange.com | Guidelines: cgcc-se.github.io/chatiquette (no tags)
it'll be unfrozen in 3 weeks.
normal TNB chat rules still apply, obviously, but for general programming things, general life things, general funny things or things you want to share with people here, do it
11:52
Why is it frozen??

Q: Make Chat Great Again

lyxalEdit: The Sand Trap is now frozen. To quote myself: normal TNB chat rules still apply, obviously, but for general programming things, general life things, general funny things or things you want to share with people [in the nineteenth byte], do it (source) In 2022, in relation to concerns abou...

it was pinned when posted
Thanks!
It was a good idea though
Not all good ideas work out
well that's what the next 3 weeks will be about
seeing whether TST has merit of continuing to exist
and whether TNB can handle not having TST
Was the traffic here ever that high to start with?
I feel it's normally pretty low volume
it was extremely high volume back in 2016-2018
it was still healthily high volume in 2021
then it got quieter in 2022 and declined from there
11:57
Got you. When did TST start?
2022 :p
Ah...I had blamed it all on discord and Reddit
I explain why TST may have adversely impacted TNB in the meta post
TNB?
It's a nicely written post by you
@Simd the nineteenth byte :p
12:06
@lyxal it was just the typo that confused me :)

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

l4m2Input part of staff, output its midi. Symbols: 0-9: octave symbol. Set O = the value. CDEFGAB: a note. If octave is just set, then use the octave. Otherwise, if the distance to last note is larger than 5 (C-A, D-B or C-B), Increase O by 1 if the new note is C or D; decrease if A or B...

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

user709019The game is played on a 1x8 board with the following setup: KNR..rnk White's pieces are on the left, while black's pieces are on the right. The king (K) can move 1 space in any direction. The knight (N) can jump 2 spaces in any direction, regardless of bordering pieces. The rook (R) can move any...

@lyxal Just to clarify, how much of the stuff we did in TST is allowed here? I know you mentioned general life things and general funny things but we did streams of consciousness in TST sometimes and I assume those aren't allowed anymore

Is there replacement of rainbow brace when printed without color?

what do CMC and CMQ actually mean?
CMC = Chat Mini Challenge, CMQ = Chat mini question.
CMCs are generally challenges too trivial to fit on the main site
17:28
I solved my CMQ but now I have a harder one
@l4m2 an obscure little trick called indentation :P
@Simd the discord has a somewhat different crowd overall, and i don't think any of us use the subreddit
@UnrelatedString right but I wonder if there are a lot of people who would be here if discord and reddit didn't exist
maybe not of course
maybe they are all hiding on a leetcode site
oh yeah reminds me a while back i tried apl golf on kattis but the one problem i picked, i immediately passed all of the public test cases but then it just failed halfway through the hidden ones 🙃
17:43
:)
er, had a runtime error on the first hidden case
what language?
apl
not sure what impl since it just says apl

@lyxal Why you gotta be like that, dumping ice in a sand trap
Nobody wants cold sand
Sand is supposed to be warm, smh
Now we gotta call it The Snow Trap
okay, so now the random stuff moves here
20:05
what projects are yall working at?
20:46
@mathscat If you're asking to me, I registered to a Unity learning school, and a project will start soon.
@mathscat For work, or for fun?
21:35
@mathscat no programming-related ones tbh
@DannyuNDos oooh good luck
@DLosc o.0 imma look at that soon :p
new pip version after 2 years??
@user here's my general idea: if you've got something you want to share with people here, and you feel it's something people might want to reply to and have a few back and forths about, it's fine within reason
So I would say streams of consciousness that could branch into conversation (even if it's only 2 or so more messages afterwards) are fair game. But make sure that you're not overdoing it. Supply and demand exists after all
Like posting some random thought you want to see how people will react to: I think that's fine
An hour by hour update of all the people you throw eggs at: while I might agree with your actions, even I would consider such messages noise
And I would direct you to make a new room in that case purely for status updates on egged people
But don't be afraid to post things just because you don't know if it's allowed. If it's something you think you really want to send here, worst case scenario is that it gets moved into its own room, or the trash room
That's really the only "penalty" (assuming you're not spamming things, posting actual gibberish, breaking TOC etc)
Speaking of the bakery I should go make sure it's unfrozen
ROs can't move things to a frozen room
22:07
@mathscat It's not a huge update, but there are some new toys that I've already been able to use, and a couple small but important bugfixes. Release notes here
Ngl I thought FJ was called Filter John instead of Filter Join for a second
Yeah, I've been mentally referring to DK as the Donkey Kong operator
22:41
ooh was CB added recently?
or am I braindead
I don't remember pip having combinatoric ops
@lyxal gotta filter those johns out
@mathscat No, CB and PM have been there since 2015... but I usually forget CB exists, too
23:41
@mathscat I'm working on some things :p
well, one thing, which I've been working on for the past three weeks
ever heard of ComputerCraft? it's a Minecraft mod that adds programmable computers to the game that run Lua
and I'm making effectively SSH for them
you run a program on the computer, SSH into a specific user on my server, and get a terminal on the computer that you can use as if you were in MC
it's powered by about a thousand lines of Kotlin and 600 or so lines of TypeScript (yes, TypeScript; it's compiled to Lua using the fabulous TypeScriptToLua project)
Maybe I should try using that for factorio mods
Does it deal with cursed proxy stuff and 1-indexing?
