Would this challenge be cursed?: "Given two districts in Seoul, decide whether they're neighbors"
The cursed part is to, instead inputting their names in Unicode Hangul, input their literal English translations.
종로 → Bellroad, 용산 → Drakemont, 성동 → Eastfort, etc.
input may be cursed, but I think the task itself is interesting

@NewPosts oh hey this got posted, yay
also yea that could be a neat task

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

NeilIs it a valid crossword grid? In crossword terminology, the grid is the region into which the crossword answers are inserted, consisting of white and black squares. The crossword answers, called entries, are inserted into contiguous sequences of white squares in a row or column, separated by blac...

Q: Community notice: October 2023 layoff announcement

PhilippeI’d like to call your attention to today’s blog post from Prashanth. Unfortunately, we’ve made the difficult decision to reduce our headcount by roughly 28%. There are more details at the blog, and I will be back later today with another post to answer some questions and provide you with more de...

oh noes
I hope they didn't lay off the chat team

It seems like SE might be in a little bit of a death spiral
do tell
Not enough manpower/motivation to make good improvements, less profit, people laid off, cycle repeats
guess we'd better hope they pull out of it
which reminds me: I should revisit my "download the entirety of chat" project
Next week: "Due to unexpected bandwidth demands, we're having to take down 28% of chat"
"...selected at random"
13:22
"...including users"
LMAO I rely on Chrome autocompleting all sorts of page titles to URLs, and one just stopped doing that, leading to me googling "worm"

Unless ofc I just switch to python 2 :p
@lyxal sound of distant running ... running and panting noises get closer ... ASR comes hurtling round the corner...
Friends don't let friends use Python 2
Cheers. Turns out I got my booleans mixed up anyway - python 2 would be bad for me in this instance :p
> Cheers.
who are you and where is lyxal
I think you'll find it's well within my rights to say that :p
Correspondingly, it's well within my rights to go to bed for the night because it's 12.30am
adios y'all :p
o/
@lyxal it's more that you used a capital letter and a period

Wait wait wait did Catija get laid off?
@lyxal She just got removed from the this list
They did announce layoffs in the blog
Okay so apparently Delphi isn't actually all that much straighter than most programming languages
But APL's a huge outlier
Especially for transness. 13.5% trans, versus 8% for second place (Crystal)
Delphi is also the most cis programming language, with 0.9% trans users
There's a lot more variation in the transness of languages than the straightness
Delphi is an outlier due to small sample size
Not sure how to measure the age of users, since it's not a numerical field, it's a list of ranges you pick from
@mousetail Very much doubt that
It's pretty close to the 50th percentile of user count
You could maybe make that case for APL (504), but Delphi has a sample size of 2311
Are there many langauges with a similar age with a smaller size?
16:24
Fortran and COBOL are both in the bottom 25% for user count
With under a thousand each
I'd expect COBOL to be straighter
And they're gayer than average
Fortran is very gay
Nope, COBOL's way more trans than Fortran and slightly more gay
So far I think everything you've predicted has been wrong :p
Hmmmm well I guess that makes my predicitons useful, you can just assume the opposite
16:26
Camping roomba moment
Though I was sort of right on fortran being a little gay
yeah i'm not surprised at all that cobol is queerer than fortran lol
The syntax of Fortran just feels very gay to me for absolutely no explainable reason
Also I have discovered that Rust is a really poor choice of language for data analysis
1 message moved from The Sand Trap
Even with polars?
16:28
Well vanilla rust
Idk about libraries
Try doing it in python without libraries
@RydwolfPrograms see the Meta.SE Tavern chat room. They did.
I guess R or APL and family would work fine vanilla
yeah APL is real nice, i head Python gud too
Pandas good
Nothing really special about python for that purpose
Why do I feel like SE is getting worse day by day.
It's been that way for years
@mousetail Yeah. For a ton of time SO was and is just a database of questions and answers
We need a wikipedia model
Did you know wikipedia was commercial at one point?
17:43
yeah
18:41
I am still hoping for a competing rust (or julia) answer to my challenge!
about 24 hours to go
maybe I should add another bounty for fast answers in other languages?
