> You are to write a program for <insert relevant organisation>. Your program will be used to <do stuff>. Unfortunately, this firm, while willing to trust your programming expertise, finds software development very confronting, and so does not trust things like standard libraries for data structures.
Thank you uni, very cool
that's flavour text from an assignment
Sure, I understand that the point of the assignment is to test your knowledge of data structures
but "does not trust things like standard libraries for data structures"?
Really? That's the best they could come up with?

1 hour later…
2:02 AM
Ahhhh, it's finally happened
I have come upon a piece of code that seemingly does nothing, except everything breaks when it gets removed
@lyxal I think they mean to say "You may have to work for some real idiots in real life and you gotta learn to deal with it"
Also, why are you still on data structures in a college level course? You're at least an intermediate programmer, you've made languages of your own (granted, they're esolangs, but still)

if the australian system is anything like it is in the us, because they can't be bothered to assess prior experience outside a narrow scope of established testing
alternatively because constructing a degree program is hard enough without personalizing it but it's not like they do a great job with that to begin with

2:22 AM
@user because this is the first assignment of the course (the course itself is about programming languages and paradigms), it's building on the data structures course from last semester (which was in C++ - this is in Java), and because it's practicing OOP
also, others in the course may not have the same experiences we are able to have here
@user no, it's flavour text that doesn't have any impact on the assignment - it could be removed of no consequence - the text is purely to give a fictional context for those that might need it
if the assignment were placed in the sandbox, people would comment to remove the extra fluff
@lyxal what I meant is, that of all the ways you could specify that the task is about creating your own data structures and that usage of existing libraries to do it for you, they really chose a ridiculous story rather than just stating that they weren't to be used

Q: Functions throwing exceptions: an exception to the rules?

DingusI'm seeking greater clarity around whether we currently allow functions to throw exceptions, and if so, under what circumstances. There seem to be contradictory posts on this topic—several highly upvoted and all with positive scores—scattered across Meta. No exceptions If people answer with func...

Btw, does anyone have a strong opinion on this?

I'm in favor of allowing outputting from functions by exceptions
As long as they can be caught

Since that's no different than, e.g., requiring await or .then to get a reasonable output from an async function

Or [*...] to get a reasonable output from a python generator
Ooh, cursed idea: Language where you can have invalid syntax inside try/catch blocks

That sounds like a good argument, also there's f(x)() thingy

4:16 AM
@emanresuA reminds me of intercal, minus having exception handling

guys

@Bubbler Wait, you can do that? Hmm okay

shld i post the "stack em"

@lyxal would you happen to also be implementing a lisp in java at the end of the class

@DialFrost Now that you decided to keep the rule for odd numbers, I don't see any reason to not apply the same rule to even numbers

actually wait i forgot my programming language concepts class also had this one assignment where like
we horrendously misapplied some machine learning library
which we were never actually taught
good thing i still got over 100% on it without actually training it enough to pass the unit tests (yeah...) because there's just that much extra credit
since most of the assignment was in horrendously misapplying model-view-controller instead

emanresu ALaggy text editor interactive Your challenge is to write a program that constantly prompts for input, and when input is given, output that five seconds later. Actually a version of Wordle played with digits is called Number Baseball in Korea, and it has been on our elementary math textbook at least since 20 years ago

5:09 AM
@hyper-neutrino what how nice
What was the first?
@Bubbler I've had that in maths class too. The difference is that wordle requires valid words as guesses

Jeez one guy puts the world's largest nuclear arsenal on high alert and eeveryone makes a big fuss about it

@emanresuA how many olds are you? As much as caird, hyper and I, or as much as radvylf and pygamer?

@emanresuA i always start with TRACE
second 2-guess in a row lol, insane luck recently

lol nice
i've spammed radvylf's random clone some but never bothered trying actual wordle

@lyxal A bit younger than pygamer afaict

5:16 AM
if your ol' reliable starting word doesn't end in s i assume wordle's dictionary does not have plurals of four letter nouns

@emanresuA oh wow...I'm 16, are you younger than me?

TIL knive is a word
@RadvylfPrograms Yes

this is like the fifth time i've found out you're 16 and it still surprised me for a second lmao

@emanresuA Huh, I'd assumed you were roughly lyxal-age

@UnrelatedString it does

5:18 AM
interesting

TRACE is the mathematically optimal choice according to 3b1b's information theory video
but that's if you play perfectly
since humans do not play mathematically optimally it really isn't a big deal what you start with
i just use it cuz i can't think of smth else i'd really like better

@hyper-neutrino And if the wordle words aren't chosen intentionally to mess with people who use words like CRANE :p

i guess if the puzzle runners actually consciously choose each day's word the plurals aren't that important to actually account for but they are still valid guesses anyways

I usually vary up my start word kinda randomly instead of sticking with a close to optimal one

pro strat use the last day's answer as the start

5:20 AM
It's higher risk, since I could get a situation like today where I get two fully gray words in a row, but I've also occasionally done really well because of it

i think my brother's doing that
spoiler tbh i don't really understand my friend's strat; it's probably to get more info on the letters and guarantee a guess but the way i do it lets me yolo like 2 or 3 guesses more often but sometimes i end up going to 5

@hyper-neutrino you have siblings? Huh, TIL

i can see why that strat would be better for making sure to get it but it would just feel wrong to not yolo that shit

I really need to learn to not watch videos relating to food at 11 PM

nah I wasn't really thinking of 19 as teenage

8:27 AM
Calculus is okay until you get to integrals?
@PyGamer0 Old cable, probably

Oh no not integrals
They're basically a more annoying version of derivatives

Or you're putting it in upside down? (can you do that with vga cables?)

@PyGamer0 i got a new hdmi to vga connector
today
and its now fixed

Hmm okay

this means the old hdmi to vga was broken from the start oof
@emanresuA no you cant
one side is wider than the other
\----/
@lyxal near that?
@emanresuA i dont have calculus books
but i do have What If and How To :P

I love "What If" in particular

speaking of flax, i started it in December and now I got a couple of answers in it
well that was kinda faster than I expected
i should also stop answering in flax since i might change things here and there
@PyGamer0 actually i do take feedback from lyxal from time to time

@PyGamer0 Check the flax repo :)

9:04 AM
looking at all activity looks like you forked it

noice
thanks for making more nilads
especially _S

Most of them were copied from Vyxal.

merged it

@PyGamer0 no particular thoughts, but interesting

9:18 AM
@UnrelatedString if i add that then ill make a flax standard library :P

it's sort of hard to think of how to populate a stdlib for a golflang of things that are worth putting in a stdlib but don't make the cut as builtins but you could just go mathematica mode lmao

For a golflang, why bother with a stdlib instead of including it in the code?

@PyGamer0 Desmos: ¶f(l)=\{l=3:6,l\}
¶ is newline
17 bytes

@AidenChow Hm, desmos vectorisation is more powerful than I thought
ø⁄

9:26 AM
maybe one idea could be to have parallel verbose and golfy modes where the verbose mode has a limited set of builtins and requires imports for stuff that's available by default in golf mode

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@emanresuA yeah, i like working with desmos cuz u can do quite a lot with lists

10:28 AM
@emanresuA because some things like a grid object that handles grid manipulation or a canvas object that's good for ascii art may not make sense as built-ins or may confuse the built in list
A golflang stdlib would be for useful golfing stuff that is a bit too practical for a golfing language
Like you could have JSON parsing stuff in the stdlib, but you probably wouldn't put it as a standard built in

stdlib?
like with imports?
in a golfing lang?

yeah

but it'll be longer that just digraphs, right?

yes

you could have, e.g. wxyz as 4 builtins whose meanings change depending on what's imported
so then if you're using several related functions from the same imported library it could be shorter

10:50 AM
hmm yeah
unless you import many libs
