It feels modded, it fails to change what the players wanted in a cave update, and only shallowly does what it claimed it would

The mountains are good though, credit where credit is due

The azaleas are ugly and could be replaced with ferns with very little changing. The hanging roots are cool, those are fine. The moss blocks are ugly, but I suppose they're fine. The spore blossoms look modded, the glow berries are also gross and look modded, the dripleaf is totally useless and lily pads are a thing already, and cave vines could be replaced with normal vines and nothing would change.

Rooted dirt is just coarse dirt with another name and less functionality

They're all just the shallowest possible things you could come up with. It's like someone who'd never played minecraft drew some concept art, and they copied it into the game wholesale.

No thought as to whether the blocks would integrate well into the game, or if there are already existing items that would work

It's like there's two separate color schemes, azalea/caves and grass/overworld

@Rɪᴋᴇʀ Glowberries are nice in theory, just like dripleaves and dripstone. But implementation is where they suck. They just don't fit with the game's color scheme or with any building style other than 1.18 lush caves.

I think they had a lot of good ideas, don't get me wrong. I just think they ran out of time to implement them well, and made too specific of promises at minecon to be able to make additional changes.

Like with the deep dark. At first I had the same opinions on sculk and the warden, but they took some time to think about it, didn't make any big promises, and now it's looking totally awesome

And a big part of my criticism is what they didn't add. We needed better underground structures, more loot, more variety, etc. The new caves would be good as a first step, but there needs to be more than just interesting shaped holes in the ground.

Look at 1.13, a huge technical update. It was going to be called "technically updated" for like a year until they merged it with their upcoming plans

Nope, it was an obscure beta that also added four dimensional blocks and changed the color of one pixel in the cobblestone texture (which upset lots of player so it was changed back the next week)

although there have been AoC problems that have taken people a lot of time, not due to mathematical complexity but just being really tedious and length
