Should be 69 now :P

@hyper-neutrino There's a guide on MSE about how to update your site-specific close reasons.
14
A: Should we update/clarify our help center with respect to other sites and teams?

CatijaI think updating the help center is a good start but I would also like to recommend that we overhaul the entire process - the close reason wording isn't bad but when we improved the close UI and the post notices, we added the ability to customize the text based on who sees it, which means that a ...

@Catija ah, thanks. am I able to actually edit the reason itself though? it only seems to let me deactivate and create a new one - or would i have to get a CM to edit it
your post does detail why editing it is typically unfavorable - it might make sense here though, i'd have to think about it

There's more info on the Mod Team post.

8:13 PM
okay, thanks

Y'all can't edit it but if you come up with the text you want, I can edit for y'all. Just status-review once it's ready.

CMM: should we edit "This site is for programming contests and challenges. General programming questions are off-topic here. You may be able to get help on Stack Overflow." to "This site is for coding challenges and code golf. General programming questions are off-topic here. You may be able to get help on Stack Overflow." ? (or, suggest a better wording that makes it reflect our site better but doesn't change too much)
if there's decent approval i'll put it on meta and tag it when it's ready. thanks Catija

A lot of the close reasons seem to be 'This doesn't belong anywhere on the network' or similar.
> I’m voting to close this question because this isn't remotely on topic for anywhere on the SE network
> I’m voting to close this question because it shouldn't be on the Stack Exchange network at all.
> I’m voting to close this question because it doesn't belong here and probably not on any other SE site either.
> I am closing this question because it is blatantly off-topic and does not belong anywhere on the Stack Exchange network.

It'd be nice if one of the default reasons was "This is off-topic for any SE site"

> I’m voting to close this question because it has nothing to do with our site scope and is off-topic for all of Stack Exchange. Additionally, I am deleting this post because it is extremely low quality and borderline spam and has no redeemable qualities.
@cairdcoinheringaahing That's my point

8:16 PM
Looks like y'all have a slot open?

@hyper-neutrino I think that's good and I don't see any way it could be improved.

@Catija Yeah, but I don't think it should be a custom one - that should be a default on all sites

I... generally recommend avoiding a "blatantly off topic" option... the thing is, when you have it, people use it instead of actually helping the person understand the issue.
(yes, yes, I know that sites that don't have any custom reasons get a default "blatantly off topic" reason - I just don't generally like it. :P )

How do you help someone if what they've posted doesn't belong on the network at all?
"This is the wrong place for this, go away"?
@hyper-neutrino Potentially, "You may be able to get help on Stack Overflow, but be sure to read their "how to ask" page first"?

8:19 PM
Yes, farming on SO is highly recommended. :)

Depends what you're farming :P

> This question does not appear to be about code golf or coding challenges within the scope defined in the help center.
This is the default text... apparently we got rid of the "blatant" bit.

@cairdcoinheringaahing I can't tell if your finger somehow teleported to the other side of the keyboard or if it somehow hit the "Rotate letter" button on your magic keyboard :P

I type too quickly :P

it's 25% a typo so within range of reasonability/acceptability :P

8:21 PM
I have a bunch of words under "muscle memory", and just fix any typos after I type them :P
@hyper-neutrino Yep, levenshtein distance of 1 :P

"Reap" is in your muscle memory?

No, but "rep" is :P

Ah.

...

8:22 PM
"Read" + "rep" = "reap" :P
@Catija Interestingly, the close flag on MSE has this as an option:
> Blatantly off-topic
This question has nothing to do with the software that powers the Stack Exchange network.

Red pear
@cairdcoinheringaahing "Blatantly" is a bit strong
We could do with a close reason similar to that, though

Spend a day watching /new on MSE and then say that "blatant" is a bit strong :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing Anyway, you help them understand what the site is for instead of merely saying "go away".
@cairdcoinheringaahing Interesting... wonder where it's pulling that from.

If someone posts something that absolutely doesn't belong anywhere on the network (and isn't spam/RA), then we vote to close it as off-topic per a custom reason, because if we chose the default "off-topic" reason, it'd point them to SO

I don't see that option in the MSE list for either flagging or closing.

8:26 PM
@Catija Flag > Needs improvement > A community-specific reason

I can't see it - probably because the flags are served differently for low-rep than privileged users.

Looks like it. I can see that option on all sites except M&TV and CGCC (where I have 3k+)

That feels like something we should fix but I'm guessing it's the alternative to the custom reason.
Probably just got overlooked in the shuffle.

@cairdcoinheringaahing Having a default close reason for "This is absolutely off-topic for any SE site" seems like a natural option imo

@cairdcoinheringaahing Agreed

8:33 PM
We can help those users by leaving a comment saying "Hey, this kind of content won't be accepted anywhere on the SE network. Maybe check out reddit/quora/wherever" but custom close reasons are a hacky workaround for a feature that should exist, and the standard close reason just directs them to SO, which has enough off-topic/VLQ as it is
Also, I like that basically all the custom VTC messages start with "I’m voting to close this question because"

It's prefilled in the form.

That'd explain it :P

@pxeger No
@WheatWizard No idea

@hyper-neutrino @Catija For the CM/mod meetup, will a transcript/answers be published for us regular users to read?

Not sure. I don't know that we have in the past. We aren't exactly mentioning it publicly.

8:44 PM
Though my longest golf that I actually put a lot of effort into would be for this interpreter challenge.

> It used to be somewhat readable, but following @sirpercival's advice has eliminated that drawback!

9:08 PM
You will note that sirpercival's Python answer to that challenge is 33% shorter than mine :P

anyone alive here?

@NickMichel Unfortunately not, we're all zombies and ghosts
@emanresuA Who is this "Dude" you speak of?

What are you talking about ;)

9:11 PM
@emanresuA caird has coinheringaahinged :P

is anyone here a coder and knows a lot about blender? I am sort of looking for a plugin/workaround/code thingy

@cairdcoinheringaahing Shouldn't that be coinheringaahed?

You've done all your coinheringaahings for today, right?

@DLosc No, the "ing" at the end isn't a present continuous, but part of the original verb: to coinheringaahing :P
@emanresuA Pretty sure, yep :P
@NickMichel Most of us are "coders" (read: know something about programming), but this probably isn't the best chat room to ask about Blender
Have you asked in The Renderfarm?

I'm coinheringaahinging.

9:13 PM
darn... I was going to see if you guys knew of a way to get access to xy and z all at once in blender

@WheatWizard It;s a good feeling, no? :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing Ye;s

@emanresuA ' is basically ;

@cairdcoinheringaahing Hm. This makes me wonder about the grammar of your username. Is it a full sentence? Because I would think that should use the 3rd person singular form: "caird coinheringaahings." Or is "caird" an adverb?

The "words" of my username are caird, coinhering, aahing

9:19 PM
(Tell me to stop anytime. I enjoy nitpicking grammar :P)

"coinhering" is the continuous form of "to coinhere", as is "aahing" for "to aah" :P
@DLosc Same here :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing So you're an arcade machine?

... but

@DLosc No, the "ing" at the end isn't a present continuous, but part of the original verb: to coinheringaahing :P

@NickMichel Only technically, but we're all practically brain dead :P

tsilbAlan Turing is Skeet-Complete.

@cairdcoinheringaahing What is the definition of coinheringaahing?

@DLosc Yes, "to coinheringaahing" is the infinitive, made up of two present continuous forms :P
"to coinheringaahing": to act in a manner accordingly of caird coinheringaahing

What does it mean to coinheringaah?
@cairdcoinheringaahing Now that's a vague definition

And yet, it's the only correct one :P
Wait no, there are many correct definitions, lemme list them :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing Coinheringaah! So the username means "caird [who is] coinhering [and] aahing," but then "coinheringaahing" is a new verb derived from the username.

9:23 PM
Interesting

coinheringaahinging means to Jelly.

"to coinheringaahing": to get horribly outgolfed in Jelly
"to coinheringaahing": to be referred to in an incomprehensible and confusing manner
"to coinheringaahing": to bug important people about minor improvements to an internet site
etc.
"caird" refers to me the person who is coinheringaahinging :P

duck

...I'm an atheist :P

While I was skimming my non-golflang answers looking for the longest one, I realized that I make a lot of quips when I post answers in QBasic:
> I sure love GOTOs.
Don't run this for very long or your laptop will catch fire.
This code is very weird.
What? We have no fancy binary-to-decimal functions here. Do it yourself!

@emanresuA That actually kinda works. FOREVER, being an uninitialized variable, equals 0, and SLEEP 0 waits for a user keypress. So as long as you don't press any keys, it really will sleep forever.
@emanresuA GOTO BED is a good option, as long as you define the BED label somewhere

Oh, is BMG soon?
I got an inbox notification

Yep, 2 hours or so

I love how 3d printer nozzles are ranked in Amazon's "garden hose nozzle" category

@DLosc Lol

For when you want your garden hose to spray 0.4mm of water at higher temperatures or when it contains abrasive composites :p

some plants are just that picky

@hyper-neutrino Per this meta discussion (and because basically no one has the required score to vote), could you approve the tag synonym for being a synonym for ?

10:56 PM
sure, done. should it be merged?

@BrowncatPrograms Do you not 3d print water?
2

@hyper-neutrino Does merging do anything extra?

replaces instances of the old tag with the new one

Merging would replace that with ?

10:57 PM
do then
Does it bump?

Yeah, might as well merge them

no
it does not even generate revision history
in fact, i am pretty sure the most destructive single action i could do as a mod is merge code-golf into like code-challenge or smth
most things mods can do are pretty easily reversible. tag merges give several warnings because it's... pretty much impossible to fix even manually
anyway, there were only 3 questions with anyway, so a merge makes sense. done

It overwrites the revision history

@hyper-neutrino There's no undo thingy?

11:01 PM
Currently, still exists in the SEDE databases, but that'll be updated on Sunday
Otherwise, no longer exists, and all questions tagged with it have now been retagged - silently - with

at least let me finish the joke next time

I'll post the /s part anyway
because frick you

Why is the notification for events 9 minutes before? :P

so when you press snooze you wake up in time

This hasn't entered the review queues for some reason, and could do with some NAA flags/VTDs

Maybe it's coded as 10 minutes before the event, but by the time the notification rolls in it becomes 9 minutes and some seconds instead, which is rounded down to 9 minutes
