> however you may not assume that the number of days in a week is 7
Glad to see we're learning practical skills in this Java class
Well of course, 1 billion devices use Java, including the Mars rover :P
Speaking of stuff they're teaching in school:
My math textbook was apparently written by a guy at a Jesuit college :P
@BrowncatPrograms Made by French Revolution gang
2
@user That's not seriously in your textbook, is it? :p
Yes, it is
18:10
In what context, though?
@BrowncatPrograms I should point out that these are examples of propositions and not something the author is suggesting, though
Oh ok
Figured it was something like that, but you never know :p
It's just that the other statement examples are rather sane, and then you have "All have sinned..."
> the following are not statements:
> [...]
> Assign 7 to y
Pretty sure assignment is a statement in Python :P
Nothing happened here
I am a smart person who knows JS very well
18:14
Now we just need to move the crime to the Bakery :P
(this joke, no 12 pls)
I mean, you probably do know JS better than other TNBers
I was thinking of var
@Dudecoinheringaahing What crime? :P
@BrowncatPrograms Since that is a statement
@BrowncatPrograms I would quote my previous message saying const y = 7, but... :P

Q: Snap (card game)

DomenicoWhen I was a child I used to play a variation of Snap to stake soccer trading cards. "Game" is an overstatement because the only role of a player is to secretly prepare its starting pile. As the game starts there are no choices other than just perform the game algorithm. Rules There is no maximum...

Anyway, you may not assume there are 7 days in a week, so you should do var daysInWeek = getDaysInWeek() instead (var in case it ever changes)
@NewPosts I expected a KotH
@user reminds me of how worried my semantics professor is that someone's going to come out of this class thinking he's a flat earther
lmao
@user Using a Java version that doesn't support var gang
My philosophy teacher is rumored to be both a Communist and a Nazi because on the first day of class, he brought out his copy of the Communist Manifesto saying "I'm not a Commie, but Karl Marx had a lot of good ideas," and apparently he has a copy of Mein Kampf
"professor" lol
18:20
There's nothing wrong with being an anarcho-nazi-communist-libertarian
@BrowncatPrograms Oh if it's Java, then you should do AtomicInteger daysInWeek = System.dateTimeStuff.getDaysInWeek(Planets.EARTH, new TimePeriod(0, 56, 23))
It's not abstract enough
True, it was a quickly hacked solution
I will add a 100-line one next time
Use some inheritance and polymorphism to encapsulate the metamorphosis
@user Sounds like some serious guilt-by-association fallacy.
18:28
@user it's the only one I've tried, but it works well enough for me, except for one upgrade, which invalidated all saved states without warning, and I had to fake a downgrade so that I could start up all my VMs with saved states and shut them down safely
More brilliance from him:
"There's this thing where you take two points with a finite distance between them and you walk half the distance between them and half of that and so on and you can just keep walking infinitely without eever get to the other point even though there's only a finite number of points in between. Mind-blowing!" (it took like five whole minutes of the smart kids explaining to him there's an infinite number of points, but idk if he was convinced)
(about an author who wrote a book about us not having free will) "he was an atheist *pauses* which is all right, but he didn't
@DLosc Probably, yeah. I have no idea why he finds Mein Kampf interesting (or if he does, actually), but apart from the whole "no private property" thing, the Communist Manifesto does have stuff like progressive income taxes, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And there are lots of reasons to own a book. It's possible to read a book because you disagree with it, if you want to see what kind of arguments the author puts forth and try to come up with counter-arguments.
@BrowncatPrograms oh yeah reminds me
@user the local version had toList, but the version on the online grader didn't
so i went back to toArray(String[]::new) and then decided to just not use streams to begin with
@UnrelatedString :( Streams are fun
19 hours ago, by user
And there's always collect(Collectors.toList()) or smth (there's other collectors too)
18:42
Protip: Use Scala to do everything, compile it, decompile the bytecode (including the std library) to Java, and paste it into the online grader :P
I had to write some Java for work this week. My reactions were about 50% "oh, that's kinda cool actually" and 50% "UGH JAVA WHY"
The "kinda cool actually" moments were mostly about compiled, statically typed languages in general, though, not Java specifically.
lol
@user I own a copy of Mein Kampf
I think it's absolutely fascinating to try to understand the reasoning behind points that you disagree with, and, because that reasoning will never be what you expected, coming up with your own arguments against them
(similar to what DLosc said)
Fair enough, although I'd heard it was mostly mad ravings and wasn't worth reading for any reason
I agree that reading things you disagree with isn't a bad thing, but do you think there is any value to reading that specific book?
18:57
If it weren't for the fact that it was written by Hitler, not really
If you're going to read a book that has an opinion you disagree with, there are a million better choices, regardless of your opinions :P
Yeah, I have a cooking book that has a pizza recipe involving pineapples
(/s I don't really have such a book)
I saw (and regretfully didn't buy) a book in my local bookshop that was all about variations on food that seem cursed but are really nice :P
CMQ: What are some variations on food that seem cursed but are really nice, in your opinion?
Protip: Make any cursed food uncursed by sprinkling it with fentanyl. You won't even realize you're eating toasted broccoli with mashed cucumbers!
@DLosc Jam on a burger is good
Cheeseburger with blueberry jam is amazing, and anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong :P
19:03
Plus, you can call it CJam :P
3
@DLosc This doesn't really count, but the first time I saw mashed potatoes, I nearly puked at the thought of eating them. Turns out they're quite nice :P
@Dudecoinheringaahing I could picture that. Though I think I would go for a flavor with a little more tartness... maybe raspberry.
My school has "mashed potatoes" that are just perfectly smooth, somewhat runny potato mush
@user Haha
i have still never actually had mashed potatoes as a dish
they look and smell so fucking awful
even though i end up half mashing baked potatoes anyways, love knishes, etc.
@BrowncatPrograms uh
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Done right, they taste quite good (it does help to eat other stuff with them that's more solid)
19:07
@UnrelatedString Good mashed potatoes are neither perfectly smooth nor somewhat runny :p
oh yeah the fact that mashed potatoes with some kind of gravy are a school lunch staple hasn't helped lmao
@BrowncatPrograms I've heard so many horrors stories about school food, but the food at my middle school and current high school (which are in the US) is quite good, even if it's just pizza and nearly empty hot dogs and sandwiches
@DLosc Spread peanut butter on a piece of bread and cover with dill pickle slices
@user i vaguely remember that when pizza was an option it was the highlight of many people's weeks
@user Not so at my school
19:08
@DLosc No, you want the sweetness. Sweet + umami is amazing
The pizza at my school is completely awful
I think a few days ago it actually gave a large perentage of the school food poisoning
I had mystery meat with spinach and other weird stuff back in India, but there's mostly just heated-up pizza and stuff here
@BrowncatPrograms wtf
@DLosc Also, slices of cheddar dipped in hummus and Marmite
And they have to make it "healthy" so it tastes horrible
there was so much shit like
corn dogs
bleached-ass green beans
these cups of like canned peaches or something
whatever the hell a sloppy joe is
19:09
@UnrelatedString I should mention that this pizza is quite small and just has pepperoni and cheese on it (still tastes great though)
@Dudecoinheringaahing Cheddar and hummus go good with many things, I don't see how this is cursed (unless the Marmite is what makes it so)
the smells were uniformly revolting
@Dudecoinheringaahing Sure, but so is sweet + umami + tart. I really like German pickled red cabbage & apples with meat for that reason.
@user Our pepperoni is this weird half-vegetable garbage, the cheese looks and tastes like plastic, the sauce is dried into basically tomato powder, and the "crust" is mushy whole wheat bread
looking back i wonder how much of my refusal to sit at tables with other people was just my senses telling me to stay as far away form that as possible
That's just awful
19:11
@DLosc i have never had picked red cabbage but that sounds amazing
@BrowncatPrograms Why don't they drop the quotes and make it actually heathy? :P
apples are surprisingly versatile for that sort of thing
@DLosc Get a nice chocolatey stout (Guinness works if you can't find anything better). Mix it 50-50 with chocolate milk, then strain out the curds and drink the liquid
@UnrelatedString Relevant XKCD
@Dudecoinheringaahing wait where the hell are the curds coming from
19:13
I think the first time I tried that was the day my parents started ignoring my opinion on anything taste related
@UnrelatedString Milk curdles in beer
wait really
interesting
@Dudecoinheringaahing This is very cool and all, but...why did you ever try this? :P
i am not surprised i have never heard of that
There's a cocktail with a rather obscene name which is just milk and beer :P
19:14
@user I love experimenting with food and drink :P
If the curds gross you out, then cooled hot chocolate (made with water) works as well
I mean, the stout is a bigger problem for me here :P
Not a stout fan? :P
my adventurous tendencies with making food tend to be more about how safe is this meat really
> Stout is a dark, top-fermented beer
Hmm, somehow I doubt my parents are going to let me do that
@UnrelatedString nsfw, recipe
@user Fairs :P
19:16
that
yeah that's an interesting name
thanks for linking it because i would not want to have to search that
Yeah, I made sure to include "cocktail recipe" in the search :P
@UnrelatedString Most of mine are of the form "what if I added that to the dish?"
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't :P
yep
oh yeah did you know that apparently soy sauce and carrots are actually relatively normal things to put in chili
because i didn't when i tried them but damn they're good
"Here lies Dude coinheringaahing. He died trying to make horse, um, a cocktail, try to taste better"
19:20
Please, I'd never die to food :P
then with the batch size i tend to do it seems like one egg is almost imperceptible, but two eggs seriously thicken it
I have other plans for what is and isn't allowed to kill me :P
@UnrelatedString You add egg to chilli?
on occasion
works surprisingly well
Sounds interesting, I'll give it a try
also half the time i end up using more pineapple than tomato
19:22
Pineapple is a surprisingly good sub/pair for tomato, especially if you need the acidity of the dish to be higher
^
sometimes i even pour myself a glass of the juice from the can and just put the chunks in the pot if i want tomato-dominated flavor but the texture of the pineapple
what else have i done
kale also works surprisingly well if you chop some up and put it in for like three minutes before serving
at one point i used a sweet potato instead of carrots, and the result was a softer texture but similar taste
Carrots in chili?
yeah
slice them relatively fine, put them in early
@UnrelatedString Sweet potato in chili is the best
i keep forgetting to get more sweet potato
it really is amazing
19:28
Protip: Take normal potatoes, mash, mix with sugar, then reform into the shape of a sweet potato. Voila! you have a sweet potato
oh yeah at one point i think i was planning to use some ham in a pineapple-heavy chili
@user Don't forget the orange food coloring tho
never actually got around to it
@DLosc Of course, of course :P
Y'all's chili sounds very different from what I'd call chili :p
19:29
lol
i can scarcely imagine the pain you must feel as a texan hearing us talk about chili
I've never eaten chili, actually, just chili peppers (which I assume are only somewhat related)
chili peppers are an important part of the flavor of chili
Oh
@user The name "chili" is short for "chili con carne", which is literally just "chili [peppers] with meat" :p
ingredients for chilli:
- onion
- garlic
- chilli
- (optional: extra spices)
- mince
- tomatoes
- kidney beans
- (optional: extra vegetables)
19:35
mince?
Isn't that a verb?

@BrowncatPrograms mince as in mince meat
Oh
Y'all have some weird words :p
> Y'all
> weird words
I'd just call that ground beef
19:40
you have some even weirder words
@BrowncatPrograms but it could be pork or lamb, not necessarily beef
@pxeger Hahaha, fair
@pxeger "you" as both singular and plural is ambiguous, "y'all" is a useful and good word :p
@pxeger Well then in that case "ground meat"
y'all should be the official plural 2nd person pronoun :P
2
Although pork chili doesn't sound like it'd be very good :p
(white chicken chili is very good, though)
@BrowncatPrograms it's nice!
@pxeger oh I forgot salt + pepper
and obviously serve with rice and sour cream
19:43
For normal red chili I've never really been a fan of rice with it
you can serve with nacho chips but that's not as filling
If you need something to take up space, that's what the beans are for
19:55
yeah rice in chili seems questionable
like it could work but you'd probably want a different kind of formulation entirely
with, not in
Rice is the only acceptable carbohydrate to go with chili
chunkier meat and thinner everything else
@Dudecoinheringaahing exactly, what else are you eating with it?
@Dudecoinheringaahing sourdough
19:56
like I said maybe nachos but you still want something stolid to go with it
@UnrelatedString bread with chilli???
@UnrelatedString ...what?
why? no
you heard me
it's surprisngly good
(But rice sounds good too)
19:57
like you don't want to let it soak or anything
I suppose eating it using the bread as a spoon/fork/spork works
yeah
the flavors combine excellently
I was thinking it as like a bed of rice, but a bed of bread :P
Rice with beans and meat sounds like a good idea to me
Cause that'd be wrong
19:58
yeah
once the bread gets properly soggy it ceases to be a positive thing
I hope this is toasted bread, soft bread doesn't go too wel lwith stuff
never tried toast with chili but now i want to
No, it can't be like white bread
It has to be something with a solid crispy crust
yeah all of the sourdough i've had with chili has been on the firm side
19:59
I prefer the middle to be crispy/crunchy too
yeah I can see why if you have to have bread you'd choose sourdough, but why bread at all?
I'll have bread along with rice and chili tbh
Presumably, Unrelated is using it like a spoon?
yeah sort of like a spoon
I mix the chili in with the rice, then eat it using the bread as a utensil
20:00
Is chili anything like the chicken bowl you get at Chipotle?
or more like i stick half a slice in for a minute or two then fish it out with a spoon
Because if it is, any of rice, bread, nachos (or all of them together) sound rather reasonable
and/or once i've finished a bowl i takea slice of sourdough and just sweep it around in there to mop up what's left
Have you ever had gulash with bread? That's what I'm inagining
@user Not really. It's more like a thick soup.
20:02
i have never actually had gulyas with bread but that sounds like a good pairing
@UnrelatedString Yeah, that's one nice thing about bread. It's somehow more satisfying to eat bread soaked in the last few drops of gravy than to just eat the gravy/liquidy thing by itself
i imagine the appropriate choice of bread would be something baguettey
yeah
Chili to me is minced beef (ground beef?), cooked with onions, peppers, paprika, stock and a handful of veggies into a diarrhoea-like consistency
2
I'm not sure what it's called, but there's this hardish bread with cheese on the outside that tastes really good
20:04
@Dudecoinheringaahing My mouth was starting to water and then you had to end it like that :P
30 mins ago, by pxeger
ingredients for chilli:
- onion
- garlic
- chilli
- (optional: extra spices)
- mince
- tomatoes
- kidney beans
- (optional: extra vegetables)
@pxeger +1 very good :P
but stock? if you need stock, you haven't stewed it well enough :Þ
You don't need stock, you add it for flavour
20:04
i've never actually tried stock in chili but yeah
@BrowncatPrograms Accurate. I speak from experience.
just stew the hell out of it
oh yeah reminds me i have been slacking on garlic
Oh no, you should never do that
I don't mean like a pint of stock, I mean like 50-100ml of water with fresh stock
You know what they say: A head(?) of garlic a day keeps the vampire away
20:06
@user There's no such thing as too much garlic :P
true
for a while i just had this one bulb of garlic where like half the cloves were sort of rotting but there was one really big clove that i didn't actually feel like taking off the bulb to get at the cloves behind it
@Dudecoinheringaahing It's certainly true for people without a social life, but after the pandemic, I don't know if that'll remain good advice :P
if you give off an unpleasant garlic odor just mask it with more garlic
Judge how much food to make by how much garlic you add to the pan at the start :P
@UnrelatedString Were you the person who recommended morphine for opium addictions back in the day? :P
20:17
@Dudecoinheringaahing So no pasta in my chili? Dang :(
(Nobody do that that's a horrible idea)
(I will hunt you down and make you into a proper chili)
For me, pasta and chili is spaghetti bolognese
@DLosc I second cornbread
Is cornbread a normal thing elsewhere? I have cornbread quite often
I've never seen cornbread outside of the States
You can do all sorts of cool stuff with cornbread
Like cornbread muffins, where you put the cornbread dough/mix in a muffin pan, if you want cornbread but without making a big huge circular thing of it
Or mix the cornbread with corn and some other stuff I don't remember before baking it, and you get this really good cornbread casserole thing
Cornbread itself is pretty good on its own, but with butter it's awesome
i have never been the biggest fan of cornbread
it;s super good in small servings if it's relatively fresh
but once it starts to stale it manages to be both unsatisfyingly crumbly and overly rich
20:35
@BrowncatPrograms I don't think that's possible, I'm usually too salty for that :P
@BrowncatPrograms Corn is bad enough, now you want double the corn?
This is like mixing milk powder into milk (although milk is good)
If you drink milk powder into milk, you get more milk per milk
Found the Redditor :P
That's a tumblr post :P
Wait no, it's a tweet
Imagine reading stuff from Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook directly when you can get a repost of a repost of a screenshot of a TikTok video about it from Reddit
Imagine reading stuff from Reddit when you can watch it as a YouTube video with text-to-speech hilariously mispronouncing things
20:43
Imagine doing that when you can run text-to-speech on the HTML of the Buzzfeed article about it, enabling animated ads with sound for extra hilarity
Imagine watching it as a youtube video instead of barely listening your friend as they hastily explain it to you when you don't actually care
Imagine barely listening your friend as they hastily explain it to you when you don't actually care instead of overhearing someone else's friend hastily explain it to them even though that other person doesn't care but you don't have a friend and you care about milk so you benefit from that person's friend's explanation
Imagine all the people / Sharing all the world
Too wholesome for TNB, delete that message :P
Imagine not liking wholesome things :P
20:47
Oh, I do like wholesome things, but TNB and CGCC are all about torturing ourselves with ugly, messed-up languages and nasty code :P
Sometimes. But on the other hand, I've found jq quite aesthetically pleasing. The pipelining approach is a lot of fun to use.
Really? jq looks really ugly to me

1 hour later…
21:53
i haven't looked at jq since i voted for the lotm proposal a month or two ago but i recall liking the look of it
@hyper-neutrino is the mod video call for all mods (or rather, any who want to attend), or is it just cgcc mods + cms?
Given how many questions I have about this, clearly I should vtc the meta post as unclear ;P
Or perhaps they'll just make you a mod in frustration :P
Wouldn't be too bad, honestly, especially since you're very active
broke: get elected as mod
woke: get appointed as mod to shut you up
:P
Oh no, is this a new (or worse, old) variation on the Tired/Wired thing?
broke / woke is the OG Tired/Wired :P
22:02
Oh
There's also broke/ woke / bespoke if you need one more :P
Okey-doke :P
i'm not sure i have actually heard of tired/wired
lol, you nearly caused me to choke on my water and soak this bloke sitting next me with his yoke
22:05
am i behind the times
I don't think so, I hadn't heard of it either until recently
That said, I am very often behind the times and am unfortunately not omnimemetic
@Dudecoinheringaahing Retro meme?
> omnimemetic
22:06
It's ngn's word, blame him
Who wants to hear the new way I'm describing lyxal? :P

Aug 22 at 20:03, by ngn
user is an omnimemetic deity
@Dudecoinheringaahing Oh no
@Dudecoinheringaahing Omnimemescient, omnimemepotent, and memebenevolent
lyxal knows all memes, can make any kind of meme, and loves all memes because they were made in his image
You think lyxal is benevolent? :P
22:08
Only towards memes
His plates often have crumbs on them; obviously, he doesn't care about us as much :(
I don't have crumbs
No crumbs!
Damn, imagine leaving crumbs on Aaron :(
@emanresuA Oh that's just lyxal cleaning the plate right before showing it to us
It would actually be quite horrible to have crumbs and ketchup and stuff just sticking to you all day
@Dudecoinheringaahing Yes, I need to work on more important stuff and for some reason, my stupid monke brain finds the absolutely pointless conversation here more important than work
in Kick me, Aug 21 at 9:22, by emanresu A
kick me
:P
You can just leave the room :P
Kicking alerts all the mods/ROs :P
Well I was kidding
22:30
@DLosc It does have a free version, and not that I would ever endorse piracy, but my 'friend' tells me the pro version is rather easy to acquire ;)
22:55
@cairdcoinheringaahing network-wide
otherwise i wouldn't bring up the thing about making questions network-wide so much :P
Interestingly, just doing a quick check around some other sites, I don't see any other posts like this
it's not an expectation that mods do this
i actually asked beforehand if i'd be allowed to since i don't think this meetup was publicly announced, but they said it'd be fine to mention it openly. as long as i don't like give y'all the zoom codes or smth :P
