hi im back... wait what the fuck is SE doing... bye...

I can't find the previous comment that Quintec posted here... where is Quintec back from?
Theoretically shortest possible non-cheating quine program
'q

'x' Push the literals between ' onto the queue.
q Push a quote onto the queue.

If a string literal is not completed, the program flow goes back to the beginning before reading more instructions in. The queue will be implicitly outputted.
I believe 2 bytes is optimal for a non-cheating quine. Please reply to me if you can find a non-cheating quine in 1 byte. (Although I would like to see more 2-byters.)

meta.stackexchange.com/questions/334248/… - - congrats SE, you've got the most downvoted question on MSE in just 9 hours

This question is Sara Chipps' best (and only) question.

1:39 AM
@A_ I believe this is the second most downvoted question across the entire SE network. Clearly, the way SE has handled this situation isn't working.

@A_ on MSE, yes, but there's a question on MSO with ~700 down

Q: We’re removing “Hot Meta Posts” from Stack Overflow's sidebar for now; moderators now fully control [featured]

Tim Post tl;dr: We're removing the "Hot Meta Posts" from Stack Overflow's sidebar while we work on looking at how Meta can better meet its goals. To ensure that moderators are able to bring important posts to the community, we'll be giving them exclusive access to the featured tag. "Featured on Meta" w...

Announcements of poorly-thought-through, boneheaded decisions by SE get lots of downvotes

Somewhat amusingly, Sara's MSE reputation dropped to 1 as a result of that post.

@Quintec It's all scary and unknown because this sort of thing has never happened on SE before, as far as I'm aware. The future of the network is uncertain. But I'm going to back our community to the bitter end.

@Jono2906 Still don’t undestand why they don’t publish chat messages that led to demotion
They’re chat messages not classified FBI documents
Why the hell does no one take the responsibility to copy/paste the transcript? That’s 107329873943 times more helpful than all those useless "sorry from SE" and "SE is bad REEEEE" posts

7:23 AM
@Fatalize Me neither. Surely they could post conversations held between SE and Monica with her permission.
@Fatalize Sure would be better.

Makes you wonder whether moderators are actually siding with regular users, or are just in their own world

@Fatalize Just omit the posts from any objectors when posting the conversation
@Fatalize the good mods (especially the mods of CGCC) care for regular users
And most of the mods on the SE network would probably be good

Well yes it’s simple, but some moderators oppose to anything from that chat to be published, because it would be break their trust of privacy on that chat room or whatever
as if what’s being said on here was super-duper-confidential

@Fatalize well, SE has already inflamed the moderator community (to the point of numerous resignations), so I doubt triggering a few objectors would hurt
I mean, it's not like people already are upset with what's happened
Treading on the toes of the few could potentially restore balance across SE

Considering that Monica is ultra-religious, and that the issue is related to transgenders, the only thing not publishing transcripts does is to actually cast doubt as to whether Monica did nothing wrong at all
Ultimately, I do no trust SE (but I already didn’t before this), but now I don’t even trust mods because they’re as non-transparent as SE on this

7:30 AM
@Fatalize I guess the ball's in SE's court now. Only time will tell what actually happened

@Fatalize we believe and operate in that chat on the assumption of privacy.

@AntonMenshov You realize this kind of answer is as useless as the answers provided by SE right?

@Fatalize I hope SE users respect it, as it protects both users and moderators .
@Fatalize nope. I do not.

Well you should then. As long as the transcripts are not published, I won’t trust neither SE nor mods on this subject, and I will not care about Monica’s demotion since I have no way of knowing whether it was deserved or not

@Fatalize as moderators, we agree to never share anything from this room in public. Both to SE and between each other. I hope, you can understand it, and the expectations of privacy for the verbatim transcripts.

7:39 AM
I don’t understand the point of these privacy rules, but whatever. If mods and SE are so keen on privacy, then discuss the demotion of Monica in private. I don’t see why regular users should care about it since no explanation will be publically given.

@Fatalize to care or not to care is the choice you make. The same as whom to trust and why.

You can’t expect from me to blindly follow the outrage of other mods based on nothing.

@Fatalize I do not.

@AntonMenshov, I guess what the real question is, what is the best way for mods and SE to figure out this situation?
Because right now, it seems that the current approach isn't working

@Jono2906 I can speak for myself only. We are trying through different means. I shared what I wanted to share in my Meta posts, which are available.
@Jono2906 I am also expecting to see much more from SE on Meta or through other means, as currently, I (personally) am very disappointed at their way of handling the situation.
However, that should not be the transcript from a private mod room. I am certain about that.
...for the aforementioned reasons, and many not-aforementioned.

7:45 AM
@AntonMenshov Would a reasonable explanation about why Monica was fired be achievable?
Because maybe that would help the situation

@Jono2906 I do not know.

As understanding the cause behind this whole bonanza would allow for more constructive debates

@Jono2906 it is a tough matter.
...there are many parties involved. And, as you see from Meta discussion, people disagree even when they know exactly the same facts.
I came to this room to explain about the expectation of privacy of the mod room, that was my main concern.

@AntonMenshov If it was up to you to solve this mess, what would you do? (Purely hypothetical)

@AntonMenshov So tl;dr if the transcripts were released, we would see that it’s not as clear-cut as the mods crying on meta are trying to make it seem

7:50 AM
@Jono2906 I am very close to this position: meta.stackexchange.com/a/334263/383809
at least as a first step.
it would not solve a lot, but that would be a start.

@AntonMenshov that seems reasonable. Hopefully SE realises this and acts upon it.

Again, this is just MY opinion, as a regular user, not even as a moderator.
@Fatalize I have never said or implied that. Neither I did the opposite.

Q: C4_4 Reflection!

TwilightSparkleSorry if this is a dupe. In this challenge, your task is to input a rectangle ASCII pattern (You may assume only printable characters need to be handled, and you may assume a trailing newline or not), C4_4 symmetrify, and output it. Here, C4_4 symmetric means symmetric under 90-degree rotation ...

@NewMainPosts Am I the only one that doesn’t understand the instructions in this?

Why is the only site I can migrate a post to our own Meta?

I think there's a limited number of migration targets (like 3 or something)

1:34 PM
@Adám When you were saying "the last test case is wrong", you were thinking about the one with two a’s right?

@Jono2906 Well, that was a cluster-f of a read

@Fatalize Yes.

This test case is so simple yet contradicts what we’ve understood of the spec
so I doubt we’ve actually understood what OP meant in their specs

@DJMcMayhem Can you move a post to SO?

But it has 2 columns though?

I don't like my dupe hammer, but I wish I had a unclear hammer.

ngn
@Fatalize perhaps that was the reason it was expected to be false - being invalid

@Fatalize If you put a mirror in the middle of the middle column, sure, but maybe that's what OP means with reflection symmetry and not mirror symmetry

@Adám Where would you put your mirror in the first test case? I would put it in the middle column too…

@Adám I think so? I've never migrated anything

@ngn so it's not this then

@Fatalize No, between the two f; columns.

@Adám …isn’t that in the middle of the middle columns?

@DJMcMayhem Can you try moving Help to use rank operator instead of each in APL? I told her to ask APL questions on SO and use APL for golfing on CG, but she must have confused them.
@Fatalize No, there are 8 column, this is between column 4 and 5.

@Adám I can try. I don't see the button anywhere

when searching "APL" I get 2'069 results on SO but 3'088 results on PPCG:)

1:50 PM
@flawr Proof that APL is an esoteric language, despite Adám’s efforts to advocate for the opposite :p

@Fatalize More like proof that APL is so easy that people can golf in it, but rarely need help with it.

Or maybe the same can be said of Malbolge :p

@Adám [citation needed]

@AdmBorkBork Learn APL and see for yourself!

good grief ... user complains Outlook is slow every time they go to delete an email ... user has >205,000 items in Deleted Items ... "I can't permanently delete something! What if I need it later?"

Good luck looking for something in that if you actually need it

ngn
@Fatalize adam used wrong reasoning above, but i too can stand up for apl (and family) and say it's no less practical than esoteric, and it's worth learning

@Adám No thanks. I'm already crazy for golfing in PowerShell, don't need to add to my crazy. ;-)

@ngn Trolling APL as being a golfing language is a tradition on TNB
Especially when some contributors are actively trying to sell it (literally) :p

It's free to download now!
As of like 3 days ago, but I will happily throw my hat into the "advocate for APL" ring

@Fatalize Yeah. Nevermind that we have an archiving solution that automatically archives every email...

2:01 PM
@AdmBorkBork Should tell them that you can archive mails locally too if they really want

@Fatalize i don't have any ventured interest in apl (i used to, not anymore) but i'm still advocating the way of thinking it encourages

does anyone understand wolfram's explanation for why there can't exist two periodic columns in rule 30?

@AdmBorkBork This is your brain in the pipeline

@Cowsquack No but related: the winner of the previous Wolfram challenge on turing completeness is a member of PPCG

@AdmBorkBork As opposed to many other languages, golfing in APL doesn't usually lead to craziness. Often, the obvious solution is the shortest too.

It should be illegal everywhere, if you ask me.

Will someone sue SE for breach of GDPR with The Overflow?

Also, I guess I've gotten used to the mint green self highlight from the redesign that I barely remember the old scheme

Unless you've opted out of arbitration in time, I don't think you can sue SE any longer.

@Dennis About our mutual obligations, maybe not, but I can't imagine SE can directly break the law and get away with it due to an arbitration clause. The crime is towards the EU, not towards me, I'd think.

ngn
there are better things we could do to make SE behave

2:56 PM
@Adám I'm not sure I know what sue actually means. You can definitely press charges, but civil lawsuits seem to be out of the window.

Sue them for 5 million Reputation

It makes me wonder why the challenges I simply copied from other site e.g. Output a Super Mario Image or Tex Quotes got a lot of upvotes, while my challenge that takes me a lot of time are being voted to close, e.g. C4_4 symmetry and is this skew symmetry

@Dennis Yeah, I think report would be the right word.

Hey, the "apology" got unlocked, so I can finally downvote it.
11

@TwilightSparkle Unless your challenge is very simple or extremely straightforward (e.g. "Add two numbers"), posts that don't have bulletproof specs usually get downvoted. Then it's just a dice-roll on whether people find your challenge interesting.
@Dennis It currently has rookie numbers. We gotta pump those numbers

3:04 PM
@Veskah Oh woo.

@TwilightSparkle Be careful about re-posting other people's challenges.

@Adám Well, for those two challenges I mentioned, I mentioned the source in the question, I think
(Super Mario Image: I said it was a problem on Luogu OJ, and Tex Quotes, UVa 272 was included in the title)
HOW DO I FIX THE SKEW CHALLENGE'S SPEC
IT IS CLEARLY UNCLEAR BUT

1) stop yelling.

AAAAAAAAA

2) put it in the sandbox.

3:07 PM
@Adám Oh sorry. I was getting too angry(?????)

@Adám That's some top-tier timing

@TwilightSparkle Why? It is just code golf.

@Adám You won't be happy when your challenge get closed. LOL

Worked examples are always a good idea.

@Dennis Ooooh!!

3:08 PM
@TwilightSparkle No, but I won't be angry either. And if I didn't sandbox it for a week, it is surely my fault.

Caps lock is Cruise-control for Cool

@Adám I won't use the sandbox. (Remarkably big flag)

@TwilightSparkle Why is that?

> CAPS LOCK IS HOW I FEEL INSIDE RICK. ALL THE TIME.

Because I want to keep the record for using the main site but not using the corresponding meta site cwl
@Adám A bit ridiculous but

3:10 PM
@TwilightSparkle Quite.

I SAID IT WAS A REMARKABLY BIG FLAG
FLAG, YOU!
A Random Challenge

Careful, a disproportionately large number of poorly received questions can trigger a question ban.

Oh... noes.

Not sure if you have deleted questions. Can't check anymore.

I don't have, I think.

3:12 PM
@TwilightSparkle My early questions also had issues, until I began using the sandbox. Only once I got a good hang of challenge writing did I start skipping sandboxing. Now I only use it when I'm uncertain about a spec.

I probably would have triggered an "answer ban"...
Because completely NONE of my answers are not poorly received.

Then you're fine for now. But we have a sandbox for a reason. If you're reasonably sure your challenge won't need it, fine. But if you have to ask in chat how to make it clearer, you should probably have used the sandbox...

@Dennis Yes.

@TwilightSparkle Btw, do you know about Markdown in chat?

@Adám ??
!!

3:15 PM
Right, so you don't have to use uppercase for emphasis.

Okay then. But how do I fix my challenge???????

@TwilightSparkle Use the Sandbox
Really

@TwilightSparkle Calm down please
It feels like you're yelling at us

@cairdcoinheringaahing Well, I guess, if it's already posted...

@TwilightSparkle Delete it.

or yell in small caps

@DJMcMayhem Nope, not yelling... That's what I looks like when I'm in real life.

@TwilightSparkle Delete it, then post it over in the Sandbox

WONDER HOW THIS FEELS

ngn
aargh, my ears...

@mods Can you make this noise stop, please?

3:17 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing What about the answers?
I mean the ones already existed?
@ngn I stopped already.

@TwilightSparkle Don't worry, they'll stay until you re-open.

heh, i was looking trough meta earlier today, and found this which contains some relevant lines

And are you blind or how do you hear my message(No, no offense!!)

@TwilightSparkle Ask them to delete them if they're stopping you from deleting the question. You're one close vote away from being on hold

@cairdcoinheringaahing Oh, no, I don't want to have a question which is closed.

3:19 PM
I see that message was too powerful

(Although in this case, it doesn't seem so drastic that deletion is necessary)

(I have already done that, though, for having a dupe.)

@TwilightSparkle Then hurry up!

@Adám ok

@TwilightSparkle That's why it stays 'on hold' for 2 (?) days so you can clean it up if VTC'd

3:19 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing o.
You cannot delete this question as others have invested time and effort into answering it. For more information, visit the help center.
Ooo sorry

2 mins ago, by caird coinheringaahing
@TwilightSparkle Ask them to delete them if they're stopping you from deleting the question. You're one close vote away from being on hold

Oh yes.

@TwilightSparkle No one's going to ban you for saying damn. The all caps, yelling messages that didn't contribute to the discussion are what people are complaining about, not poor language

@TwilightSparkle I've been reading through the post, trying to understand it. I think it finally clicked, but shouldn't asdffdsa be false?

@cairdcoinheringaahing I apologies for all those, though.
@DJMcMayhem The right half fdsa is moved vertically 0 characters and the pattern becomes reflectional symmetric.

3:23 PM
You never said that moving 0 characters is allowed

> Note: If the pattern itself exhibits reflection symmetry, it is considered skewer symmetry.

Oh, fair point
Ok, so I can understand it, but it takes some work. If you want it to stay open, you should provide an example of what move the left-geometric-half or the right-geometric-half vertically means and what that looks like

I think I understand the challenge: if you can move either half up/down (potentially 0 characters), to form a palindrome on each line, it's truthy. Otherwise, falsy?

@cairdcoinheringaahing I have to say, yes.
I'm not good at writing. Most of the questions I posted can be boiled down to one sentence. E. g. the space cleaners one.

A palindrome or a mirrored string? For example, abcba vs abccba

3:25 PM
@DJMcMayhem Oh yes. I always miss that kind of thing.

Another thing that would be helpful to specify is whether or not the input will always have an even width

@TwilightSparkle That's why the Sandbox is so valuable. People can help you find the correct wording without having to go through all this

abcba is disallowed as...

> have an even number of columns.
Not especially obvious though

as it is gutter symmetric rather than reflectional symmetric

3:26 PM
Oh, I see

@cairdcoinheringaahing Then how to fix
Oh no 4 VTCs
I can hardly prevent myself from yelling
I'm going

I'd split it into 'input/output', 'what skew symmetry is', 'rules' sections

Please don't close my question
or delete
@cairdcoinheringaahing Oh, okay

@TwilightSparkle 4 VTC's is good (IMO). If its on hold, you can fix it before new (potentially invalid) answers get posted

3:27 PM
Shouldn't Input/Output be "Test Cases"

Either one is fine

@cairdcoinheringaahing But that also means I have yet another [on hold] question which makes me feel awful.

@TwilightSparkle No, specify what the input/output rules are. e.g. non-empty input, consistent truthy/falsy output. Test cases is separate
@TwilightSparkle But once its fixed, it'll be reopened

@cairdcoinheringaahing Ohhhhhh
@cairdcoinheringaahing Reopen takes a lot of time and... Probably no one would want to reopen at that time

@TwilightSparkle Yes they will, people will want to answer the challenge, and will reopen it to do that

3:30 PM
@TwilightSparkle Why? Has happened many times.

Also, do anyone have any actual useful construct for 1+ quine
@cairdcoinheringaahing Oh okay
Bye for now

@TwilightSparkle Please don't flood chat like that.

Plus, it shows up in review queues, so it can be reopened quickly after editing

@TwilightSparkle Also, if I think it's clear I'll single-handedly reopen it
4 messages moved to Trash

@TwilightSparkle I think 1+ isn't very well known.
