uanirudhxBeziér me a curve! code-golf Task: Create a program that will, given a number N, create a Beziér curve with N control points and output its equation. The definition of a Beziér curve is $$ B(t) = \sum_{i=0}^n{{n\choose i}(1-t)^{n-i}t^iP_i} $$ Practically, this means that for a quadratic Bezié...

anyone know how to pass around a function (one that doesn't need parens) around without calling it? (in perl 6)
02:36
@ASCII-only wdym? What are you trying to do?
so let's say i have my &a = ->|args { do_stuff(); }, and i want to pass it around. how to do that :|
if i like... return &a it seems like it's implicitly calling it
02:57
returning &a seems to work for me?
prefixing the & should make it a code object
hmm. maybe i'm making the function in the wrong way
is { { .say } }a block in a block
no, it's just one block I think
oh wait what
Yeah, there's a low priority bug with double closures
-> { -> $a { say $a; } } maybe? hmmm
03:02
or maybe that's something else
yeah that should work
:|

or put an & on the inside block
(the bug I was thinking of was this one about a useless error message)
put an & on the inside block?
like {&{.say}}
or make it a whatever lambda like {*.say}
still not working :|
https://tio.run/##lVdtbxs3DP7s@xVEY1R2YrsvG/YhcZ1hW1cUQ9MC65fCMYKzT7bV3p1cSVcnS/zbM1LSvejsJNsXW6L4PKJIiuJtuEp/ub8vNAej4gU/i6KVirMsVnARm0LF6Tu4jTpH8IOrObwBueEqNlJBT@RLcd0fQC6LHBeWOfQ2ipMs6qgi5fD54ye4hSmMtcnMBNiIwewYdlFno6SRYHUQdQtW2PHzU32TjZFoM8GVUwEs5YbBWCQ8RxL/f1IJ2JzjKr/eKLdDm4nMLpmMDIiuUqFpNJfJzWQPSMcKTGBmTVtJlYg8Tq@2OJjQ6abxaPTPcIY24en2zIEjMGuhYSuLNIGsMLFBT685bGKluQqcQYaE7iCJtUaLfJVysocN2HnTpfu6WZEasXHaZP0p2r4USpv0hu3Bez06V@4W@uVS/5ggeMwDkDCAJK5sPqpl1hKxLG0Qy9otdr/z0u9TYDzV5DU3n53XR6qI4oURsgyHj6mnO6CsdRi58Y9YhZmyD1pW7DQKz4jwMCwocOfLNqlYCFNCfW7t6eGmTT2fSWFKE8qCyELUGy
looks to me like it's probably still implicitly evaluating
03:19
are you sure this is the issue? I haven't done anything with grammers, but it seems to error even without the output functions
wait hmm...
@ASCII-only um, is it the use trace that's throwing the error?
apparently, yeah :/
lol, weird
oh i did it

@JoKing is yours also printable ascii only?
hi @primo
hi
i apologize, i haven't posted an answer yet
no problem but I am hugely looking forward to it!
sorry for my impatience

@H.PWiz perhaps even more interesting: after deriving a series √2 the same as for √(5/4) (taking the difference of continued fraction convergents, and applying euler's transform), I ended with an almost identical summation
which can actually be used to find a summation for the root of any rational > 1:
√2 = https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=sum+%7B+(2k-1)!!+%2F+(4%5Ek+k!)+%7D+k%3D0..infty
√3 = https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=sum+%7B+(2k-1)!!+%2F+(3%5Ek+k!)+%7D+k%3D0..infty
√5 = https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=sum+%7B+(2%5Ek+(2k-1)!!)+%2F+(5%5Ek+k!)+%7D+k%3D0..infty
√7 = https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=sum+%7B+(3%5Ek+(2k-1)!!)+%2F+(7%5Ek+k!)+%7D+k%3D0..infty
etc.
in short sum { (2k+1)!! / (n^k k!) } = √(n / (n-2)), just solve for n/(n-2) = x
should read (2k-1)!!
Anybody has a formula for an interesting function to show basic graph plotting function functionality?
x^(1/x)
maximizes at e
sech(x)^2
approximately a bell curve
11:49
@primo Heh, I found that one when in high school, causing my teacher to give me his expensive graphing calculator.
@primo That's very nice.
i've used the second, because the cumulative distribution function is so nice
12:26
@primo Yes, very interesting.
13:04
Morning guys
hallo
○/
@Adám What APL program is that?
@Veskah That is a prefix version of an otherwise infix trigonometric function application.
This seems like something PPCGers would be interested in
13:17
@Adám Nice

@Veskah So e.g. 1○a is sin(a) but you can write this as ○/1 a instead.
^^ Why stack overflow doesn't allow mathjax: people abuse it to color text...
any views on my sandboxed question gratefully received codegolf.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2140/…
@user202729 Wait, does that work on PPCG?
13:32
@Adám (ye, with \$ as the delimt)
@anush We were having little challenge about 3D output. I think it may be necessary to specify a list of 3d to 2d projection methods?
@user202729 I meant the colouring part.
@user202729 oh that sounds interesting. I wasn't expecting that
@Adám I guess yes. (why not? they're both mathjax)
has anyone already done that so I can copy it?
I am already wondering which language will have a built-in for it!
but most languages may find it easier to use a skew coordinate system (not sure what this is called)
13:37
in a challenge, are there norms for how the picture should be outputted?
For 2d, yes.
the picture will be 2d so I will copy that
what is the norm?
@Adám have you seen shtisel by any chance?
@Adám if so, what do you think?
Random idea: replace English word with some homophone. 0x0.st/zaR3.txt
@user202729 english is a tricky language. Could you tell what is a homophone?
@Anush shtisel?
13:41
Shtisel (Hebrew: שטיסל‎) is an Israeli television drama series about a fictional Jewish family living in Geula, Jerusalem. Created and written by Ori Elon and Yehonatan Indursky, the series premiered on 29 June 2013 on yes Oh, and is distributed by the online streaming service Netflix.The series has been considered innovative for its treatment of an irregular group of Orthodox Jews by stripping them of their political associations and depicting them as "ordinary" people. It follows the lives of Shulem Shtisel (Dov Glickman), the Shtisel patriarch and a Rabbi at the local yeshiva, as well as those...
(according to some dictionary and some pronunciation)
I have started watching it
@user202729 but the words you list aren't in dictionaries
@Adám I have watched a few episodes now
of course you may have no interest whatsoever in TV
We could have a challenge like this: given some English text, output another text with maximum string edit distance but same pronunciation according to some pronounce library.
@user202729 So we would need only real words for which we have english->phonetic pronunciation mappings
13:45
I like the idea
The program would be able to produce invalid real word if the library support that ("ripeet", "consentrasion")
Although it would be better to disallow the program itself to use the library, otherwise they would use some genetic algorithm to try to modify the original text letter by letter.
you may also want to provide a dictionary for use in the challenge
@Anush Ooh, interesting. Thanks for the tip. I'll let you know, or, if I forget, remind me.
@Adám cool!
I like it
do you mind if I ask which country you are in?
@Anush England, UK, EU (for now). I don't mind; it says here.
13:52
:)
no one has a clue when or if the UK will leave the EU as far as I can tell
seems likely that they will exit october 21st, no deal
and if this doesn't happen... nigel farage will probably be the next elected PM
@primo I think likely in the sense of 33%
but there is 67% left :)
@primo I don't think the UK parliament will allow that
I mean the no deal part
and farage can't be PM unless there is a general election and that doesn't have to happen until 2022 I think
and he can't make it happen earlier
if farage is PM, does that mean the UK govt becomes a limited company?
i thought it was? owned and operated by the USA
no, wait. that's Germany
@primo :) The problem is the liability is not limited
in other words, no one has a clue
/me disappears in a cloud of smoke

oh btw for any of you who shamelessly create new languages every day and also use discord, I created a Language dev/design discord server
6
I do that. They're all derivatives of English and consist of varying mispronunciations and slurs of already existing words.
@Veskah is Alcohol your interpreter?
@Skidsdev How'd you know?
@Veskah I have a habit of doing similar, but I tend to use the new THCompiler ;)
everything is working now \o/

@Skidsdev @ASCII-only I think you'd like this discord server in the reply
