Not all programmers have it in them to code sustainably.
VSL is itself implemented in a language which is known for producing enormous quantities of garbage.
> Copies the values of num bytes from the location pointed by source to the memory block pointed by destination. Copying takes place as if an intermediate buffer were used, allowing the destination and source to overlap.
the buffers overlap in this case
so its gonna do it
But you don't need to use an intermediate buffer and it would be idiotic to implent it with one.
oh
all right then
well thats good
i feel like it would be better to do the copy like that yourself anyways

Question: what is best way to convert double to string. If I use libc's sprintf I'd still need to know output length so I think best way is to roll my own
how do you want it formatted
@quartata base-10 decimal
right but
which is why python prints them as scientific notation eventually
what point is that?
10^16 i think
01:13
I wonder why a lot of languages prints 0s at the end if a large double is formatted into an integer tho
I found a direct formula for the Densely packed decimal (DPD) to decimal challenge. It isn't short but it was a fun process.
Well. A type of direct formula. It's trivially extensible to single-integer-to-single-integer.

@Οurous All formula is direct, no?
Ah, you mean "with no conditional"
What is the 0^?
@Downgoat I don't think branch is as slow as malloc.
@Downgoat If you use %e they won't get too big (use scientific notation for too large/small numbers).

@user202729 zero-to-the-power-of, which comes out as 1 when the power is also zero, and zero otherwise.
@ASCII-only what does vsl-nearley do that normal nearley doesn't
Any idea what's this function? (javascript) tio.run/#%23y0osSyxOLsosKNEtLshMSS3Kzc/LTq38/…
because you did major fix and complex change that idk what mean
curious if I can merge back to normal nearley

@ngn So ngn/k is getting floats?
> this takes approximately forever
@ngn seems like a relatively large dep for simple task though
ngn
ngn
@Downgoat that's the fastest found. if size matters and you don't mind the dependency on libc, you could just use dtoa()
07:03
lol, why does it need a PRNG?
ngn
ngn
@Adám no, it doesn't meet my simplicity standards :) maybe if i put some effort into simplifying it without ruining the performance too much...

i like it that this library prints floats with enough precision so they round trip - if you type back the formatted float in your interpreter, you get the exact same bits

Q: it is a c language programming code

user84210Write a fully modular C program that reads in a string of a defined size from the keyboard and reports how many times each letter of the alphabet occurs within that string (ignoring case). It should also report how many non-letters are included in the string.

feersumFully modular C program Modularity means that instead of writing one big long procedure, we break up our logic into small, composable functions. We all know that modularity is a good thing. Do we have any popularity-contest challenge related to syntax abuse/obfuscation? Sometimes when a friend of mine proclaim that Python has the cleanest syntax and is always intuitive, I send them something like l=lambda l:l(**{'l':l});l(l) and we share a laugh. However I always enjoy scripts where you just say "how on earth does that even compile/work?" regardless of language
@maxb pretty sure there's a CnR about this, not sure about popcon
@J.Sallé Good idea, I'll check out the CnR category!
@user202729 Thanks! Now I have some fun reading ahead

I'm in the market for an external hard drive, and it's really hard to get any real data on their reliability
The best source is Backblaze, but they mostly use commercial grade drives (meaning no covering). They also don't have much data on Western Digital (one of the 2 leading brands)
amazon customer reviews are terrible because both sides are saying "unreliable" and "has terrible customer service"

@NathanMerrill I used a Seagate 1TB Backup Plus external USB drive from 2013 until spring of this year when it kicked the bucket, and now I use a Seagate 3TB Expansion Portable USB drive. I could've got the 4TB one for only an extra $10, but the 3TB one was available next day.
While my 1TB drive did die after 5 years of regular (almost daily) use, I'd still definitely recommend Seagate's external USB drives. Really no matter what external drive you get, you shouldn't entirely rely on it for data safety, and should have other backups just in case. I use Backblaze to back up my 3TB drive these days
nandgame finally forced me to make my own logic dimulator :D
