betrayed?
lol yes

So feedback on my sandbox?

@betseg can I still join?

ngn
@Christopher why not give the weights/areas as input and have only one mode?

@ngn wait to give weight /area and have them output what the change is?

ngn
5:13 PM
@Christopher I mean, instead of defining four different criteria for optimisation and making people encode them in their programs, you could pass the weights (or areas, densities, etc) of each type of coin as input.
@Christopher That would make it less of a Kolmogorov-complexity type challenge and more of a dynamic programming challenge, which is more interesting, IMO.

Indeed, the least change is equal to weights 1,1,1,1
So it's just minimization w.r.t. to some weight vector

huh'
i have no idea what that meant
@ngn ok.... hmmm

The problem is quite abstract if you get deep down into it, all the coin stuff is irrelevant

ngn
@Angs it's the knapsack problem

Q: How to sort two solution with same score limit?

l4m2There was problem asking to write n programs a0, a1, a2, ..., an-1, so that running ak outputs a(k+1) mod n, and the score is sum(len(ai))/n2. Lower score the better. Lots of answers just have a format and with the format score can go as near as you want zero. Do they have order in this case?

5:32 PM
@ngn Ah yes, it's the knapsack problem with an infinite supply of coins (or at least the cent amount of each coin). I don't think anyone has posted the proper knapsack problem yet.

dibs?

@Christopher How about word it something like this: Knapsack variant: Given a number of cents/whatever n and a set of coins/whatever with a value and a weight (v,w), give the partition from n into coins with a combined value of n that minimizes sum(w)

i am just removing that post and doing a vanilla knapsack
@Angs

i can see next week's headline now: reporting anonymous crime tips is now illegal

@flawr where the subtitle would simply read 'MURICA

@J.Sallé 'MURICA

Q: When suggesting that is a synonym of , do I suggest on the synonyms page, or on ?

I'd say on

(Asking because we have this tag)

@flawr it's not commutative

Actually, it appears as though it is. The more used tag becomes the master, irregardless of which tag suggested as a synonym

8:01 PM
nah, it's not (see the suggested synonym lists)
at least in that aspect, no

@EriktheOutgolfer yep, otherwise I would have said on both:)

Oof, CR's having another election, with 5 existing mods, and 3 places available. 8 mods seems excessive for a fairly inactive site

two mods are resigning

Actually, I think one is resigning and the other is re-running

CMM: Do we want the and tags, with 2 and 1 questions respectively?

, no, and not because of opinion IIRC

Nevermind, 3 of them are resigning

Whats circuit golf? Just like... about ECE?

@Downsheep can't atm, likely not today (but maybe later this evening circa 7 pm pst)

hello
does anyone here know awk? I'm struggling with sth basic here, since it's my 2nd day with using awk.

@DJMcMayhem it took me a while to get the joke... I browse with js disabled

me too, just a few secs ago :))

@seshoumara what's the issue?

why is seq 5|awk '$NR' printing only 1?

$NR?
oh nvm
misread

9:23 PM
the value of the current record as far as I understood

yea
probably looking for EOG
EOF
try NF for all the fields

$NF is the value of the last field
in this case there is only 1 field, everything is good

no, it's not
NR is the number of records, NF is the number of fields

yes

ther'es only one record so NR returns 1

9:27 PM
but NF and $NF are two different things

oh I see your issue, try it with ""
instead of single quotes
in single quotes, '$' means literally '$'
so NF is dollar sign, N, F
it doesn't parse teh variable
er maybe other way around

ngn
@Picard I think that's what he intended - it's an awk variable, not a shell-expanded variable

@ngn correct

ngn
@seshoumara try without the $

without, it means the current record number, and since all are >= 1, the expression is converted to true and the implicit printing is done
this I know
the curious thing that I don't understand is the behaviour of $NR in awk
seq 4 10|awk '$NR'
prints only the first line, in this ex 4

ngn
9:33 PM
@seshoumara I don't either but "man" says it's the current record number
@seshoumara what output are you hoping to get?
@seshoumara perhaps you mean: seq 4 10|awk '{print NR}'

to print all lines as well, since $NR is from what I understand the value of the record NR, just like $NF is the value of the column NF, and that value should be converted to true or false

ngn
@seshoumara like this? seq 4 10|cat -n

NF and $NF are different things, just like NR and $NR are different. @ngn I know how to print line numbers, my question about $NR is only for understanding purposes
I got it!
$NR for the 2nd row is $2, since NR is 2 on the second row, but there is no field $2 so it's given value "", which equates to false which means the row is not implicitly printed
with this in mind seq 0 4|awk '$NF' prints only the numbers 1 to 4, since $NF is always $1, as number of fields in each line is one, but on the first input line $1 is 0 (the first field), which is evaluated to false, hence not printed
to print all seq 0 4|awk '//'. Thanks everyone! Just discussing it helped me understand it faster.

mindblown

word online has the worst scrolling i've ever seen >:(
rather than the logical "a little bit of movement on the scroll input means a little bit of scroll", for some reason it starts jumping and skipping multiple lines of scroll for no reason
there is no way that someone appreciates this behaviour
