4:03 PM
@Dennis I could, but I feel like it should be done by someone with a higher standing in the community.
@MartinEnder Well I guess I'm thinking of something else

are there enough bounties for each category?

There's 17 500rep bounties in total

not enough then
hmm

There's less than 17 categories with a positive score

@Dennis Yeah, I guess being capable of that many calculations doesn't mean it wouldn't explode in the process eh?

4:05 PM
@Pavel I don't think it really matters. If you posted the call for categories, I don't see a reason you couldn't also post the nominations.

@Dennis I guess I will then.

@J.Sallé I'm more worried of everything else on the planet burning to death.

@Pavel ...oh nvm i saw the total count and forgot it counted deleted answers

galaxy*

I suppose I'll include every category with a positive score.

4:07 PM
Sounds good.

@Dennis I'm more worried about everything else in the universe burning to death.

@Dennis You don't need cooling if you do reversible computations

@Dennis fair enough
@Mego is that because they're cool on their own?

@Adám After a very small fraction of a second, it will incinerate and stop generating heat.

I'll be showing myself out now...

4:09 PM
@J.Sallé I recognize the pun you were going for, but I refuse to acknowledge it :P

@Mego it wasn't even that good tbqh

I can only create an answer once every 60 seconds, so it'll take me 13 minutes at the least to post answers to codegolf.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/14614/… from codegolf.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/14511/….
Help would be apprecieated

sure

@Dennis I'm not worried about waste heat. To store enough data to make such speed meaningful, at the theoretical maximum data density, its sheer mass would destroy our galaxy.

Anonymous
@Adám You don't need to store data in order to use the speed. Simply being able to flip 2^256 bits per second is impressive (and reversible, so no heat generated ideally).

Anonymous
4:14 PM
It could just be flipping a single bit really, really, really quickly

@Mego But OP clearly intends it to crack encryption.

@Pavel ninja'd
:P

Is reversible computing Turing-complete? (Unbalanced esoteric programming language?)

Anonymous
@Adám Brute-forcing a key can be done in O(1) memory (assuming len(key) == len(ciphertext)). Decryption is trivially reversible, so there's still not a heat problem.

WAIT WHAT DO WE DO WITH TETRIS

Q: Reversible Turing tarpits?

NathanielThis question is about whether there are there any known reversible Turing tarpits, where "reversible" means in the sense of Axelsen and Glück, and "tarpit" is a much more informal concept (and might not be a very good choice of word), but I'll do my best to explain what I mean by it. What I mea...

... the only answer is downvoted ...

Anonymous
@user202729 Yes, because Toffoli gates are universal logic gates.

Anonymous
@Pavel Modify every category to be "best X that isn't Tetris", and give Tetris an honorable mention? :P

Anonymous
With enough Toffoli gates, you can compute any boolean function, which means that you can implement a Turing machine with sufficient Toffoli gates.

Anonymous
With the current categories, Tetris can win 4 (Above-And-Beyond, Wrong Language, SGITW, and Best Explanation)

@Mego Could you add a note to the main post for me indicating that? My laptop will die extremely soon.

4:23 PM
@AdmBorkBork Maybe it should just get its own category/post in the final vote, so that it's adequately represented but doesn't push out other interesting answers from all the categories. — Martin Ender ♦ Jan 2 at 16:54

Anonymous
Seems I'm not the only one with that idea :P

Yeah, just mention in the main post that it will be rewarded at the end, but isn't eligible for any of the categories.

Tetris has had enough bounties, it doesn't need another one :P

... what happens when we have a too-good answer ...
Reward... who?

I'll add it.

4:24 PM
Thanks
@MartinEnder Could you lock Call for Categories while you're at it?

Each answer has a +1000 bounty, so PhiNotPi gets double the amount other users get.

@Pavel I'll just close it as a dupe of the nominations probably

Ah, k

Anonymous
As awesome as Tetris is, I support having it be ineligible for these categories. When the winner is basically predetermined by one competitor greatly overshadowing the others, it's not much fun.

Also, 500 * 18 = 9000.

4:29 PM
Allowing Tetris to compete would be like allowing Michael Phelps to compete in a high school swimming meet :P

@MartinEnder rip over 9000 meme
Should the post be featured?

Probably

@user202729 I believe Stack Cats is Turing-complete (so yes). I don't have a formal proof, but a sketch for a Brainfuck reduction. Also, what's Unbalanced? (Sounds like the opposite of Stack Cats :D)

I feel as though Husk has to nominated for this, but I'm not familiar enough with the language to find a good enough post :/

@Pavel All his answers eligible for nomination :P

If I want to nominate an answers, shall I comment with the post and the author and my thoughts on why it should be bountied?
Or edit in the CW answer's body?

Edit it in, then people will eventually vote on your nomination

Wait. I am confused

Although explain why you think it should be bountied in the nomination

There are 3 stages to the Best Of each year: Category Proposals, Post Nominations, and Post Voting

4:36 PM
@Mego And now I comment below the corresponding category's CW answer and the votes received on the comment are the votes on that nomination?

Anonymous
@Mr.Xcoder No. You edit the answers to make a nomination.

@Mr.Xcoder All nominations are edited into the categories, then when voting starts, comments are placed under each post and people upvote the comments containing the answers/challenges they think should win.

Anonymous
Once the nominations are done, voting will commence via voting on comments on each category answer (on a new meta post).

I got it, thanks

Anonymous
Oh wait, we didn't make a new post for voting last year. The nominations post was edited.

>_<

@Mego actually, we'll probably just edit the post and add the comments, so that we don't have to copy over all the nomination descriptions (that what we did last year)
oh
should have kept reading

Ninja penguin strikes again :P

Can i nominate myself?

Yes you can
> Self-nominations are welcome.

4:42 PM
sweet
so how do i nominate myself?
just edit it into answer

>_< yes see last year's post

i have a answer here that fits several categories. How should we do that
I am under rookie answer, SGITW, and one other for that

Anonymous
@Christopher2EZ4RTZ You can nominate it for multiple categories

@Mego sweet

Not like that though.

Anonymous
4:44 PM
IIRC there were a couple of answers one year that were nominated under multiple categories

i just put mine in 2 categories, SGITW and rookie

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ Please read the answers here to see the desired format.

(I.e. Add ## [Challenge Title](answer link) by [Cristopher...](link to your profile) and after that **Self-nomination**, and then you should share your thoughts on why it should be bountied)

dang
I wish Mafia KoTH could be nominated but I don't want the bounty I want the original author to get the bounty :/

4:50 PM
It's also from 2018 isn't it?

nope
dec 20th
@MartinEnder can you clear the comments for this: codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/102618/…
just noticed that they were old and outdated

You can just flag for removal

well i guess so
doesn't that also ping all the mods

So? That's what the mods are here for

Q: Best of PPCG 2017 — Now Accepting Nominations!

PavelYou have chosen the categories for PPCG's "Best of 2017". We're going with 13 categories this year. Since all you amazing people have offered up a collective total of 9,000 rep in bounties, we can include all categories with a positive score. So here is what we'll do: I will post one community w...

@HyperNeutrino whaat? I can't get these hotkeys to work
(not because I want to run out of votes, but because I like the idea of hotkeys in general)

@HyperNeutrino except that you can only use 30/40 votes that way :p
the other 10 must be on questions

oh right :P

tuskiomiToday in my statistics class, i found that some factorials can be simplified when multiplied together! For example: 5! * 3! = 5! *3*2 = 5! *6 = 6! @cairdcoinheringaahing Can a good pop-con exist? Yes. Are pop-cons likely to be good? Definitely not.

Honestly, I kinda epected there to be more than 3 nominations to best-of by now.

there's 43 views :P

7:20 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing let's not start this again

I have questions for JS experts: What's the best way to make a collection of constants? A class doesn't seem quite right, since it doesn't have any methods or a constructor. Does JS have enums?
(If it helps at all, the constants are all strings)

@DJMcMayhem Not a JS expert, but I'd just do const stuff = {a:"one", b:"two"}

@dzaima It'd have to be {"a":"one"}, no? Keys must be objects, not identifiers.

@dzaima Thanks

@Pavel ah yeah, though I don't know the conventions, I think as the properties are supposed to be accessed by dot notation, I feel like not quoting is more appropriate.

7:33 PM
So it turns out that Lynn actually designed GS2?

"turns out"?

Well we didn’t know “nooodle”’s indentity initially

upon searching, the only difference of quoting the keys (apart from JSON) is that the keys must be valid identifiers, which is free error checking at negative cost here

(speaking as a JS developer) most people don't quote the keys unless they're writing well-formed JSON
although since they need to be valid identifiers, if you have stuff like dashes and periods, you need to quote it

@cairdcoinheringaahing There can't be a good pop con, because the answer with the most votes wins.
Jan 10 at 13:31, by Dennis
Voting on this site is so incredibly broken, it's not even funny anymore.

Hey @Dennis, while you're here, would you mind unfreezing the tinylisp room? Thanks!

Done.

TY!

bah, we're getting into how we value challenges.
If we deem the "value" of the challenge based off the answers it produces, then that's totally true
this is pretty much the position we hold on PPCG (and rightfully so)
but if the value of a challenge comes from the challenge itself, then I'd disagree

Which category should this answer go under? It could be Rookie of the year, SGITW, or Above and Beyond

10:10 PM
@DJMcMayhem you can make multiple nominations

Yeah, but which one is it best for?

@DJMcMayhem I'd eliminate Above and Beyond

Anyone interested in discussing the future of tinylisp with me is invited to do so in the tinylisp chatroom!
