I'm pretty sure apt-get has some commands that apt does not
But I honestly don't know
Hey, I need opinions: is relying on numpy a good idea?
@Zacharý What do you mean by "relying on", and for what type of project?
DIFFERENCES TO APT-GET(8)
The apt command is meant to be pleasant for end users and does not need to be backward compatible like apt-get(8). Therefore some options are different:

       · The option DPkgPM::Progress-Fancy is enabled.

       · The option APT::Color is enabled.

       · A new list command is available similar to dpkg --list.

       · The option upgrade has --with-new-pkgs enabled by default.
Golf-lang
Nope, it's just fancier
22:01
@Phoenix Yeah I just read that too.
By "relying on" I mean using.
@Zacharý numpy is a pretty stable package as far as Python packages go, I don't think you will foresee any problems using it. My question is: why?
What will you use it for that regular python doesn't cut it for? Or is it simply for a speed boost?
Determinants and Inverses for now.
The speed boost seems pretty good too.
apt-get can be used inside scripts as it has easier to parse output.
@musicman523 no. there's pacman and that's it. pkgfile is like apt-file i guess
22:09
Screw it. I'm adding numpy to the dependency lists.
Saying pacman is less confusing because there's only one program for it is basically saying Ubuntu would be better off with just dpkg and not apt or apt-get.
@Zacharý Another valid option is to reimplement everything you're using numpy for, and catch ImportErrors. That being said, don't do that :P just use numpy. anyone with python will have numpy
Okay. I'm going to implement the now 31 monads.
I have python but not numpy - python comes with some operating systems so there will be people who have only python
(personally I see no problem with needing numpy, just pointing it out)
@Phoenix Not true - it's more like saying that Ubuntu would be better off if dpkg could do what apt-get does
Also, Arch packages are much much simpler
Try to make a Debian package, then look at this wiki page
22:20
I personally love sympy.
What does someone say when reporting a bug in Sympy: NOTICE ME SYMPY!
Is there a way to calculate the determinant using Numpy?
NVM, I got it
@Mendeleev I just went to the arch website and the first line of code listed was pacman -Syuw
@Phoenix Download all updates, but don't install them
But to someone who's new to arch, that makes no sense at all.
-S = sync, -y = update repos, -u = upgrade packages, -w = download only
just man pacman
There's also apt-pac
(and the reverse, pacapt)

@musicman523 no. there's pacman and that's it. pkgfile is like apt-file i guess
So what is this apt-pac and pacapt?
22:30
@Phoenix Scripts written by some people. apt-pac is for people used to apt-get and it translates apt syntax to pacman options. pacapt translates pacman style options to a lot of other package manager style options .
Ah
Though, if you have to rely on external scripts, that's not really a good case for it being less confusing.
I'm sure pacman performs better than apt, but there is no way you can say it's easier to use.
@Phoenix Not relying. It's just a tool that some people use
@Phoenix I mostly meant creating packages
Ah, that makes sense
Making apt packages is a PITA
22:39
@WheatWizard Hey, is that directed at PPCG challenges?
@Zacharý No not specifically but It is relevant
I'm assuming it's not directed at anything specific?
Question: to send a follow up email do you do "reply" and change the sender or like forward it to same recipients
23:01
chirp
23:21
4 messages moved to Trash
@Downgoat I think some email software/online providers will automatically change it to the right recipient if you press reply, rather than letting you accidentally email yourself. That would still need "reply all" for a group message though.
1 message moved to Trash
I use forward if there are attachments so that recipients can see the attachments to the original email in the follow up and not need to hop between the two
@Mendeleev, whenever you get back, don't do stupid stuff like that, you will get kicked
I'm always happy to spend time discussing my reasons if someone asks without being confrontational
Whoops
Tried to mark this question as a possible duplicate of this question and let the community decide if it was actually a duplicate or not
But forgot I had a gold badge and dupe-hammered it
(Good thing I was able to reopen-hammer it)
23:38
^ why I dislike the hammer

question: which one is better, fibtraction or subonacci?
(also, feel free to close-vote it yourself if you believe it to be a close enough dupe)
Even without a hammer, people should only be dupe voting if they are sure. Otherwise, just bring it to chat or meta
@totallyhuman Fibtraction sounds cooler, like a fibtractor beam
I'd say the opposite for close as unclear though - then vote if at all uncertain to get it closed quickly. Maybe I'm talking myself out of what I said about dupe voting...

Right about now, I'm dreading having to convert all of my functions into non-stack-based versions so Reduce and the like work on them... >.<
Can you write a function to do it for you?
Better yet, a stack-based function :P
I probably will be better off copying my main.py into a test.py file then working from there.
Stack based, every command is.
