you have done a bad job of explaining
>:|
explain better please
maybe with a diagram
Both steps start with "push child list", which I assume means a new empty list
@trichoplax Yes
So each digit, a new empty list is added. The value of the digit just affects whether it's added at the current level or the next one in
 f=(n,l=[],m=[])=>n&&l.push(m)&&f((n/2)|0,n%2?l:m)&&0||l
g=l=>l[0]?l[1]?g(l.shift())+2*g(l)+1:g(l[0])*2:1
h=l=>(g(l)/2)|0
Yeah
how do you go one level out then?
00:02
@DestructibleLemon You don't, it's recursive
@DestructibleLemon Why do you need to go one level out
Recursion cannot be explained. You have to see it for yourself
@ASCII-only [[][[][[][]]]] is not the same as [[[][[][]]][]]
@trichoplax I know what recursion is. its just that you have two way progression in this task; down and to the right. you have to do one first, then the other. how is to the right done?
;-; google i thought you were smarter than that
too much snek
00:04
@DestructibleLemon it's done when n%2==0 (push new child to parent)
@DestructibleLemon I know you know what recursion is :) I just meant that working through an example is usually easier than the abstract explanation
please give an example then ascii only
@ASCII-only what is n...
function doTheThing(x){
	if(x==""){
		return [];
	}
	if(x[0]=="1")
		return [doTheThing(x.substr(1))]
	return [[],doTheThing(x.substr(1))]
}
takes a binary string as input.
And I think it works..?
@DestructibleLemon number input to f
I haven't got the inverse function created yet.
00:09
@ATaco how would you do [[[[]]][]]?
lmao I haven no idea.
back to the drawing board?
Probably.
It's also impossible to get [[][][]]
00:21
Question: if I have the following struct:
struct ST {
  int X;
  double Y;
  struct RT Z;
};
and struct ST *s;
what does s[1] return?
00:34
function doTheThing(x){
	var ups = [];
	var main = [];
	var ths = main;
	for(var i=0; i < x.length; i++){
		if(x[i] == "1"){
			var last = ths;
			ths = ups.pop();
			if(typeof ths == 'undefined'){
				ths = [last];
				main = ths;
			}
		}else{
			ups.push(ths);
			ths = ths.push([]);
		}
	}
	return main
}
Second solution.
ugh this is harder than i thought
Yes! The solution works!
@ComradeSparklePony does my edit to your challenge work?
01:11
@Riker Yes. Thank you very much.

hmmm, I had an idea for my 2d lang. commands look in the surrounding spaces for scalar characters, which are placed when writing the program and maybe reflectively

hmmm, nah there will probably be a command to alter them. but I don't know how this should work...
@Dennis Sheesh and I thought you were a smart person XD
I mean who can't read compressed streams
At the very least, I'd have to know which kind of stream. Since Bubblegum can't read it eithwr, I only know that it's the wrong kind.
@Dennis It was a deflate stream
I was trying to compress the bear challenge text but it was dupe closed ;(
I mean really. Please let me post answers that crush everyone then close it! So I will have the most golf answer
01:46
There's a 395-byte SOGL answer. Bubblegum won't get anywhere near that.
@Dennis ARE YOU KIDDING ME. People reopen the challenge just in time for someone to outgolf me in an answer that I was planning on posting and you close it.
I feel like this whole site is just an conspiracy to make me feel sad :(
that is rather egotistical
@DestructibleLemon Just because the world revolves around me does not mean I am egotistical.
actually the world revolves around an imaginary axis
christopher is imaginary axis?
@DestructibleLemon Yes. Also the universe does also
01:55
no there is no reason to believe the universe revolves
@DestructibleLemon Sorry the center of the universe is me
According to science I am right :P
doubtful
the earth moves around the sun. unless the universe pulses back and forth, the centre of the universe is moving in a constant direction
The universe is supposed to be of an infinite size. Therefore everywhere is the center. And if it just loops around like a torus then again. Everywhere is the center
if you assume centre of universe is centre of mass
@DestructibleLemon Remember in the land of ego. I am always right. And as my ego has expanded to include TNB I am right.
01:58
it is doubtful the centre of the universe moves around the sun
@DestructibleLemon I did not say it moved around. I corrected to I am the center of the universe. Get my egotistical facts right!
Thanks for amusing me @DestructibleLemon. I should get back to working
02:11
Ugh, it's hard to be active on PPCG when it's finals season
So much work
Hah Finals. I have no finals :P The closest thing I have is an AP Calc test for next year :P
@quartata does it make sense if I have C code in an if(false) statement that is syntactically valid, it makes the difference between the code running and crashing?
Instead of finals I just have more work...

@DJMcMayhem not gold yet :p
I do'nt think anybody has gold there
huh, nobody has any gold review badges
I'm working on it

Super ChafouinDoing code review, I stumbled upon the following code, that tests the status of a checkbox: if (!isNotUnchecked()) { ... } I had to brainstorm for 30 minutes to find out what actual checkbox status the code was expecting. Is there any way to get a list of languages that use echo to print?
@WheatWizard Yeah, I've had that question too.
Currently my best solution is to go to rosetta codes page on hello world and search echo
@WheatWizard Hey, I dropped a comment on your post "Anaglot Polygram" and also two on my own answer on that question. Have a look, in case you haven't!
08:37
Yeah I saw them
Oh okay.
I saw your reply too, just now.
I would like to help you get up to score 1 sometime, don't have the time rn but I think it can be done
I know the pain of updating the TIO links though
@WheatWizard Is my Decode the Void solution ok now?
I think so. I'm not totally clear on how its works and I don't know enough APL to test it thuroughly
@WheatWizard And I have done that once! (Have a look at the revisions of the post!) My solution was invalid at first (printed 1 in every language).
08:42
@WheatWizard I've updated the TIO link with a few test cases, and it should be obvious how to test with any JSON.
The length of the submission makes me suspicious however
@WheatWizard APL eats arrays for breakfast.
Wait why do all them return 0?
I don't think that is right. It should be a bijection
@WheatWizard Any void list that is not in the correct encoded format should return 0. (0 is not in the acceptable domain of f)
Er, no thats not really the goal
08:44
@WheatWizard Then I still don't understand. What is g supposed to do with invalid input?
every void list should map to a unique integer
@WheatWizard Oh. You didn't specify that either. Add that exact phrase.
The only invalid input for g should be a non-void list
Ok will add
Sorry about that
@WheatWizard Did you use the sandbox?
Nope. I actually have not used the sandbox in a while I should get back in the habbit of doing that
I just tend to forget stuff in the sandbox
08:50
@Adám Can APL be used for making Windows Applications?
@Arjun Yes, absolutely.
To quote from our documentation:
GUI objects are represented by .NET classes in the .NET Namespace System.Windows.Forms. In general, these classes correspond closely to the GUI objects provided by Dyalog APL, which are themselves based upon the Windows API.

For example, to create a form containing a button and an edit field, you would create instances of the Form, Button and TextBox classes.
oh APL can use .NET winforms?
@Mayube Yep.
neato
@Adám So making forms using ⎕WC is limited to computers running Windows?
08:57
@Arjun In fact, the default Windows interface for Dyalog APL is partially written in APL.
@KritixiLithos No, making .NET forms using ⎕WC is limited to Windows. ⎕WC can do more than .NET.
The reason I'm asking is that running something like 'F1'⎕WC'Form' gives an error
Anonymous
@Adám So APL doesn't play nice with Mono?
@Mego I don't know. I'd need to ask our Windows/.NET/platforms/porting guy, but he's at BUILD.
@KritixiLithos Right, that would attempt to create a .NET form, which obviously doesn't work on macOS.
From version 16.0, 'wb'⎕WC'HTMLRenderer' opens a CEF window.
Mono doesn't fully support WinForms, but does to an extent, and converts it to gtk
I've seen an Andoid app running on Dyalog APL too. Ran on a watch, a phone, and a TV.
09:08
Ooh, that's neat
how does it work? Is there a GH repo or something for Dyalog on Android?
@Mayube I guess Braingolf can't do that.
pff braingolf can't do anything
you can't even feasibly say "is the input string equal to this string" in braingolf
@KritixiLithos No, it isn't official yet, but see it in action here.
Is anoyone ready to test some submissions? Dennis needs Exactly 15 points to be tied with Martin. That's very easy to achieve.
@Riker that video is now all time top post in /r/videos with 140k upvotes and 7 golds
09:16
@StewieGriffin I don't think we are allowed to vote for such a reason.
No, but I can guarantee you that Dennis has a post you haven't voted on that deserves an upvote!
@StewieGriffin Challenge idea: given a user number, find all Dennis's posts that that user has not upvoted.
Well, I don't know how much you vote, so I'll rephrase: I can guarantee you that Dennis has a post I haven't voted on that deserves an upvote!
Impossible. You can't see other peoples votes...
@StewieGriffin Yeah, well, I tend to exhaust my vote cap lately.
@StewieGriffin Given a logged in user, etc.

Q: Is it permitted to upvote only to test submissions?

AdámIn order to properly test the submissions to Martin vs Dennis - Round 1, one would need to upvote the current lesserso their reps become equal, and then continue upvoting so the former lesser becomes the higher. Is it permitted to vote for this reason?

@StewieGriffin Why is your avatar here prohibited, while it is permitted on the site and on meta?
I haven't bothered changing it on chat.
I failed though, since I just ended up becoming addicted to PPCG instead.
09:33
@StewieGriffin Would it not be better to test by using different users who we know to be (currently) tied?
@StewieGriffin Yeah, their reps are likely to fluctuate by the second (especially with your request to vote for them), making testing even harder.
For example, here's my code modified to test 2 (seemingly) inactive users who are currently tied on 200 rep: jsbin.com/juqupifuyi/edit?js,console
Dennis & Martin tied right now! Quick, run your tests!
The winning 05AB1E submission works
I've found something from Dennis I'd like to upvote, but now I feel bad about voting.
@Shaggy Good point...
@Adám New meta post: "Is it OK to not vote on a post that I'd normally vote on, just because someone asked me to vote on a post?"
09:52
@StewieGriffin Meta: Is it ok to encourage other users to vote or abstain from voting?
@Adám You shouldn't; if it's worthy of your upvote then upvote it.
By the way, I could easily accept one of Dennis' answers to one of my challenges, as I'm sure he has the shortest submission in quite a few of them! Just too bad I've stopped accepting answers on challenges.
How many votes do proposals on Meta usually require before we can consider them consensuses?
@StewieGriffin Do we have a meta post on whether to accept code-golfs or not?
24
A: We're not a Q&A site. But what should be done about it?

Martin EnderRemove the Accept feature This feature is likely way too integral to how SE instances work for this to be possible without forking the software, but I don't think the concept of accepted answers is useful on PPCG.

@Shaggy Post that on meta. The lowest number which is proposed by an answer which has enough votes to be considered consensus is your answer.
+38/-14 is not necessarily enough to be called a consensus, but I strongly agree, so I follow it.
@Adám That's made my brain itchy!
I usually write: "The winners will be the shortest solutions in each language." in my challenges, although I forget it sometimes.
@StewieGriffin +8/-1 is definitely not a consensus then!
10:04
@Shaggy Maybe better: The lowest number which is proposed by an answer which has that many votes as it proposes is your answer.
@Adám Much better! :D
+8/-1 means 8 times as many people favor that opinion, quite a clear consensus the way I see it. 38/14 means e times as many people favor that opinion. Not as clear.
@Shaggy So if I propose 0, that instantly becomes consensus (until someone downvotes it, of course).
I propose that zero votes is enough for a consensus
@JanDvorak You have my downvote.
10:06
... revenged
And you have my sword!
@JanDvorak You have my upvote though
I propose -∞.
Infinity is a constraint or limit, not a number
you could propose -1000 though, doubt 1000 people will take time to downvote
then Int::MIN_INTEGER
10:08
@Mayube Whatever. But that would then become the consensus, together with all other proposals on meta.
but if there are multiple conflicting proposals, the highest upvoted becomes consensus
it would make more sense to pick the highest proposal that hits its required score
@JanDvorak That's neat too, but much more conservative.
@JanDvorak right but then -1000 would still win until somebody else posted a higher number and reached at least that many votes
@Mayube As soon as they post, they've reached it, if their number is also negative.
10:11
right
@Mayube that's the point. How can we agree on anything if we can't even agree on whether we agree on something...
5
so you could overrule a post of -1000 with -1, unless 2 people downvote the -1 post
@JanDvorak I disagree.
@JanDvorak I disagree, I don't think that's the point at all
10:11
@JanDvorak No.
I disagree, that doesn't prove your point
My brain is getting itchy again!
maybe we should just leave SE altogether and make our own site, with blackjack & hookers
There is another aspect. While a proposal may have an apparently relatively high score, it may mot indicate any consensus at all, consider e.g. a proposal with +45, but it's real score is +1045/-1000. Is that consensus?
@Mayube Your ideas are intriguing to me and i wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
10:14

If we want to be rigorous, we should require that at least a% people agree, with at least c% confidence as measured by the votes given
It's impossible to determine a hard number that guarantees that we're doing the right thing. Sometimes you'd end up leaving the faith of the site in the hands of sadists craving ice cream.
have fun computing cumulative binomial distributions every time you want to know if a rule applies
@StewieGriffin hey, where did you learn I like ice cream?
@JanDvorak Nice challenge.
I mean surely it can be quite easily calculated as a ratio of upvotes to downvotes
10:17
@JanDvorak fortunately, we have short codes to calculate cumulative binomial distributions
we just need to err.. come to a consensus on a minimum ratio for an accepted consensus
3
I propose 95% confidence that at least 50% agree
which would imply five upvotes minimum with no dissent
@StewieGriffin And there I thought there would be hard & fast rules on what was considered a consensus.
@JanDvorak and how can we verify if the consensus is "95% confidence that at least 50% agree"?
we need to come to a consensus on a consensus on a minimum ratio for an accepted concensus
@LeakyNun conservative self-validation voting on the requirement parameters :-)
10:19
@JanDvorak I propose that 0% agree with 0% confidence. I win.
@LeakyNun We'll make a meta post about it, and use the winning ratio to find out if the winning ratio won

@LeakyNun conservative = highest value that reaches its threshold wins
@Mayube So the requirements change every time someone votes on that meta-meta proposal?
@Adám good point, let's come to a consensus on an accepted divergence in votes after a consensus has been agreed upon
10:21
I seem to have inadvertently opened a can of worms!
Let's go fishing
"Let's go fishing"r>o<
@KritixiLithos but that's in ><>, right? not in fishing
CMC: if we have 15 balls, we can make some balls into bars such that the contiguous balls have length 3: ooo|ooo|ooo|ooo. Given n and r, determine if it is possible to make some balls into bars such that the contiguous balls have length r.
@Mayube It will be really hard to keep up with the fluctuating consensuses. I'd need at least 8 hours every morning to reconsider all my acceptances, votes, and submissions.
10:28
And kudos to the one who discovers the formula (it is quite simple)
@LeakyNun The answer is 42
@Adám 8 hours seems like a rough guess, maybe we should prioritize coming to a consensus on how long you'll need every morning
@LeakyNun there are 12 balls in ooo|ooo|ooo|ooo
@KritixiLithos plus the three made into bars
Well it would be n/r = an int
10:29
@KritixiLithos read the question again
@Christopher no it wouldn't.
Wait what
I read it wrong
@Mayube Meta: What percentage of my time spend on PPCG should I spend reconsidering my acceptances, votes, and submissions due to fluctuating consensuses?
I still don't get the CMC
I think it is in latin
@KritixiLithos "make some balls into bars"
alternatively, "replace some balls with bars"
@Christopher not funny.
10:31
@LeakyNun Choose some other character than bar, as I too read "bar" as a ball-sequence (e.g. a 3-bar: ooo)
@KritixiLithos You start with ooooooooooooooo.
@Adám how is a "bar" a ball-sequence?
And what should I choose?
@LeakyNun oh, so !((n+1)%(r+1))
@ASCII-only bingo
now golf that expression
@LeakyNun CMC: if we have 15 ones, we can make some ones into twos such that the contiguous ones have length 3: 111211121112111. Given n and r, determine if it is possible to make some ones into twos such that the contiguous ones have length r.

@LeakyNun oh wait nvm
10:35
@LeakyNun So whether r=(n-x)/(x+1) for any x?
@Adám Yes, you are right.
@LeakyNun e.g. n=15, r=3, 3=(15-x)/(x+1) → x=3

Math challenge/question: You're given a goal positive integer N, a starting positive integer X, and a real number in (0, 1) P. Is it possible to reach N if the only operations you can perform are X = X*(1+P) and X = X*(1-P)?
@Adám I said yes
@Mego good luck reaching N if P is irrational.
Anonymous
Concrete example: X = 50, N = 100, P = .1 (you need to get from 50 to 100 only by adding or subtracting 10% of the current value).
Anonymous
10:38
@LeakyNun Ok, restrict P to rational values
isn't this is (x+1) divisible by (r+1)?
@DestructibleLemon yes it is
@Mego so you are asking whether 100 = 50 * 1.1^m * 0.9^n?
Hint: 11 and 3 are primes.
@LeakyNun APL: 0=1|-÷1+⊢
@Adám that's long
@ASCII-only whoops actually 14 bytes
10:42
@LeakyNun I don't see how I can do it shorter, 0=1| int? - n-r 1+⊢ 1+r
I'd expect a short Brachylog answer.
Anonymous
@LeakyNun Basically yeah, are there non-negative integers m and n that satisfy N = X * (1+P)^m * (1-P)*n
@Mego It isn't possible for N=100, X=50, and P=0.1.
Anonymous
One more correction: the result of each operation is floored
what?
Anonymous
So the operations are X = floor(X*(1+P)) and X = floor(X*(1-P))
10:44
that's very... unmathematical
Anonymous
I can use the symbols instead if you'd prefer :P
I mean the question itself, not the symbols
I refuse to think about it.
Anonymous
It doesn't lend itself to a nice neat formula
So uuh.. I just googled branchylog
didn't get the results I expected
@Mayube it's brachylog
10:50
@Mayube you have an extra n
oooooh
brachy- means short
@LeakyNun I read that as "maybe you have an extra n"
@Adám I don't pronounce the name at all.
Anonymous
I'll post my question to Math.SE and see if there are any takers
10:51
@Mego yay I have more rep than you in math.SE
Anonymous
@LeakyNun Ok?
@Adám Mayube he's born with it, Mayube it's brachylog
@Mego you haven't posted any question
Anonymous
@LeakyNun Well yes, I'm still writing it. Patience.
11:04
@Mego I was talking about your past record.
@Mego patience is for the patient
Anonymous
@LeakyNun Oh yeah I usually just read Math.SE stuff
@Mego btw 50, 100, 0.1 is possible
For one with more steps I'd go something like 50, 100, 0.61 (this enters a loop if you just try and keep going towards the goal)

@LeakyNun Ok now you're just being aggravating
11:16
@Mego I'm sorry if it causes that impression.
Anonymous
Offering a suggestion for a better notation would be much more helpful and much less aggravating
I don't actually know what I should use in that context... I would use sequence
but that would be too formal
just stick to $\leftarrow$ then.
Anonymous
I don't think the notation is causing any confusion. If it does, someone who is more experienced with formal math notation can edit it.
I've deleted my second comment.
but I'm wondering why you are using $*$ instead of $\times$ or $\cdot$ or ""
Anonymous
I considered framing it as a sequence, but the fact that the next value is chosen from two possibilities makes it un-sequency in my head
11:20
@LeakyNun please use unicode symbols instead of mathjax when possible
Anonymous
@LeakyNun Inner programmer. He can't be restrained.
@ASCII-only I type howsoever I want.
Anonymous
@ASCII-only MathJax was clear enough, especially considering the post in question was written with MathJax.
@Mego I know, but Unicode would look more consistent (i.e. it would look the same to people without the MathJax userscript)
Anonymous
@ASCII-only But we're literally talking about MathJax. I don't have the userscript, and it was clear as day to me.

@aditsu, is there a reason why & and | don't work between two chars in CJam?
That just cost me three bytes here. :/
@IlmariKaronen mainly I didn't figure out what the result should be
@aditsu I would've expected a char, with the operation applied bitwise.
@aditsu Of course work with the charcodes! Also, you've got a new release to release, if you forgot ;)
It's also a little bit weird to me that ^ between two chars produces an int instead of a char, but I guess that's not such a big deal.
It's a big deal for me, since operations involving a char normally return a char.
11:55
@IlmariKaronen that's one possibility, I'll have to consider whether it's the best choice
@EriktheOutgolfer yes.. haven't found the time yet, but I'll try to do it soon..
printable ASCII isn't closed under bitwise AND, or even bitwise OR.
What do you mean by closed under?
@JanDvorak True, but CJam's chars aren't restricted to printable ASCII.
CJam's chars can be from 0 to 65535 (hence ci instead of i65536%).
